23:40   Kuki tribe group may come to Imphal: Biren Singh
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday said that he is thinking of inviting individuals of the Thadou group, the largest tribe of the Kuki Zo community, to Imphal.

A number of related tribes are collectively called Kuki or Kuki Zo community, members of which mostly live in the hill districts of the northeastern state.

"I am thinking of inviting individuals of the Thadou tribe to Imphal. Even individuals of the Hmar tribe have expressed interest in visiting Imphal. I asked them to come and told them that it would not be an issue with the old settlers," the chief minister said in the assembly.

Meitei community members are the majority residents of the Imphal Valley region.

Ethnic violence between them and the Kukis has left over 200 people dead since May last year and rendered thousands homeless.

Hmar community members are also ethnically linked to the Kukis. Singh said, "We had positive discussions with Hmar brothers recently and mutually agreed that this conflict broke out of misunderstandings. They have taken their stand they will have peace talks with the government."

The government has been contacting other communities too in its efforts to restore peace in the state, he said.

"Naga MLAs and ministers are also extending assistance and I appreciate that," the chief minister said. -- PTI

22:44   If bank work can be done from India...: HC on Indrani's foreign travel plea
The Bombay high court on Monday suggested to former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in her daughter Sheena Bora's murder, that if possible, she complete her bank work in Spain and the UK from India itself instead of travelling to the two European countries.

A single bench of Justice S C Chandak said that if the work was genuine and bonafide and required Mukerjea's physical presence in Spain and the UK, the CBI could consider her travel to those countries.

The bench also cautioned Mukerjea against adding more work other than what she had mentioned in the application filed before the special CBI court while seeking permission to travel abroad.

A special CBI court on July 19 allowed Mukerjea to travel once to Europe (Spain and the UK) for 10 days between intermittent periods for the next three months.

She had sought permission to travel, claiming pursuant to her divorce from Peter Mukerjea, she needed to change certain bank-related documents and other ancillary work.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had filed a petition in the high court against the special court order.

Last month, the high court granted an interim stay on the special court order. -- PTI

22:02   Principal suspended for offering non-veg food to student
A government primary school principal was suspended from duty and arrested after family members of a student and Hindu outfits on Monday staged a protest against him for allegedly serving non-vegetarian food to the pupil, officials said.

Protests were held in the school and outside the police station, they said.

Mohammed Iqbal Khan, principal of the school in Vaidwada in Meerut, is accused to have "deliberately served" non-vegetarian food to a student. A block education officer has been tasked with a detailed report on the matter.

According to the police, a class 3 student in the school alleged that the principal gave him Rs 100, asking him to bring some meat. The principal, then, allegedly offered the meat to the student, who refused it. Subsequently, Khan allegedly offered the meat to the student's younger brother, they said.

The police said the matter came to light when the brothers informed their family members about the incident. On the complaint of the student's family members, the police has registered an FIR against Khan under Section 299 (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feeling of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), SHO Naresh Kumar told PTI.

Acting on the complaint, Block Education Officer Shyam Mohan Asthana was sent to the school and said prima facie the principal appears guilty.

Khan was suspended based on a preliminary report on the incident, the officer said.

Basic Siksha Adhikari (BSA) Asha Chowdhury said she received information that a student was given non-vegetarian food in the school. A detailed probe into the matter will be done by block education officer (headquarter) Pradeep Kumar.

21:38   Carry date, timestamp on visuals of disasters: Govt to news channels
The Centre on Monday issued an advisory to private news channels to carry a date and timestamp on visuals of natural disasters and major accidents while reporting on such incidents.

The advisory, issued by the ministry of information and broadcasting, noted that television channels provide continuous coverage of natural disasters, major accidents over several days but keep showing the footage from the day the incident took place.

The ministry argued that the footage shown by television channels several days after the accident or disaster does not necessarily reflect the real-time ground situation which leads to "unnecessary confusion and potential panic among viewers".

"Therefore, to avoid any misunderstanding among viewers, all private satellite TV channels are hereby advised to ensure that visuals of disasters, natural calamity or major accidents should prominently display a 'DATE AND TIME' stamp on the top of the footage," the advisory read.

The display of date and timestamp will ensure that viewers are suitably informed about the exact date of the footage being telecast and the fact that it does not necessarily reflect the real time position at the location of the incident.

The I&B ministry advisory also "strongly advised" private news channels to ensure adherence to the programme code while telecasting such incidents. -- PTI

19:44   Atishi will hoist national flag on I-Day: Delhi minister
Delhi minister Gopal Rai on Monday directed the general administration department to make arrangements for the hoisting of national flag on Independence Day by his cabinet colleague Atishi, in what could emerge as a new flashpoint between the LG office and Aam Aadmi Party dispensation.

Rai issued the directions following a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar Jail.

Issuing the directions, Rai, who is also the minister for general administration, said, "I had a meeting with chief minister today. He desires that minister Atishi should hoist the flag on August 15, 2024, at the Chhatrasal Stadium event, in his place. All the necessary arrangements be made accordingly."

In a letter to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena last week, Kejriwal said cabinet minister Atishi would hoist the national flag during the Delhi government's Independence Day programme in his place.

The LG office, however, maintained that they did not receive any communication from the chief minister.

Also, the Tihar Jail authorities informed Kejriwal that his letter to Saxena saying Atishi would hoist the tricolour on Independence Day was "an abuse of privileges" granted to him under the Delhi Prison Rules. -- PTI

13:06   Doc rape-murder: HC to decide on CBI probe tomorrow
A PIL seeking a CBI investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kar Medical College and Hospital will be heard by the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday.

The body of the woman doctor was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital in north Kolkata on Friday. A preliminary autopsy report has indicated sexual abuse before she was killed.

The petition, along with some other petitions with similar prayers, will be heard on Tuesday, a division bench presided by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam directed on Monday.

The petitioner's counsel prayed for transfer of investigation into the gruesome murder of the woman postgraduate trainee, who was also allegedly raped, at the state-run Kar Medical College and Hospital to the CBI from the city police.

Counsel Phiroze Edulji alleged that a faulty investigation was being carried out by the police and submitted before the division bench, also comprising Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, that he will place arguments before the court to that effect during the hearing of the matter.

A man has been arrested by Kolkata Police, which is investigating the case, in connection with the murder of the woman doctor and booked for rape and murder.

Edulji claimed that a cover-up attempt is being made into the incident, maintaining that one Dhananjay Chatterjee was hanged to death in 2004 over the rape and murder of a girl, who was also a poor accused person under similar circumstances.

He stated before the court that the surathal (inquest) report into the death of the woman doctor has been made public. Stating that the name of the victim cannot be made public but has happened in this case, he also prayed for a direction by the court that the name be ordered to be expunged from all social media platforms. 12:19   Killed doc like my daughter: RG Kar principal quits
Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) on Monday launched a nationwide strike as they gathered outside various hospitals across the country, demanding justice for the trainee-doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The doctors gathered outside the Lok Nayak Hospital, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi and several hospitals across the country and hurled slogans, demanding justice for the victim.

Speaking with ANI, the FORDA General Secretary, Sarvesh Pandey informed that around 3 lakh doctors across the county have joined the protest and demanded that others would join as well. He further informed that they will continue their strike indefinitely till their demands are fulfilled.

"We will continue our strike until we get a written assurance that our demands will be fulfilled" Dr Sarvesh Pandey," said.

The doctors are demanding a CBI inquiry of the case, a fast-track court and the formation of a committee for the implementation of the Central Protection Act in all hospitals.

FORDA India president Dr Aviral Mathur said, "...Everyone should condemn this incident. Yesterday, we issued a notice under FORDA for a nationwide strike where we demanded a few things...We will call off the strike when our demands are addressed as we don't want the patients to suffer. The emergency services are going on for the convenience of patients...Our organisation is constantly in touch with the ministry. We have full faith that our demands will be fulfilled."

A doctor protesting at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia listed out the doctor's demand and said, "We have three main demands. First, a CBI fast-track investigation because the State Government's investigation is very biased. They want to nab any innocent and silence us. But we won't let this happen. This is a gang rape and murder, committed by 2-3 people. This is Nirbhaya part 2. Second, the insensitive authorities of RG Kar which is issuing statements like 'what was the girl doing alone at night' when this happened in the doctors' duty room, be permanently removed. Third, the Central Protection Act be implemented in all hospitals across India."

Earlier, the Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh offered his resignation from his post. The protesting doctors had called for his sacking.

"I am getting defamed on social media...The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign...I don't like that this should happen to anyone in future," Sandip Ghosh told reporters as he left the hospital

Union minister Prataprao Jadhav has claimed Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray was bowing before "trivial people" with an eye on the chief minister's post ahead of Maharashtra polls and had abandoned the Sena's ideology.

The state assembly elections are due in October this year. Last week, former state chief minister Thackeray visited Delhi and met top Congress leaders.

Some BJP leaders later claimed Thackeray wanted to ensure he would be the chief ministerial candidate of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

The Congress, Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) are chief constituents of the opposition alliance, pitted against the ruling `Mahayuti' coalition of the BJP, Shiv Sena headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and NCP. Speaking at a felicitation programme in Jalna on Sunday, Union minister Jadhav, who belongs to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, said during the time of party founder Balasaheb Thackeray, leaders used to visit his residence 'Matoshree' in Mumbai.

In contrast, Uddhav Thackeray is now seeking approval of "trivial people" to secure the CM's post, he claimed. "He falls at the feet of trivial people for the chief ministerial post," the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare said.

Uddhav Thackeray has become completely secular, lacking the qualities of his father Balasaheb Thackeray, he further claimed.

"He has not even one per cent of the qualities of Balasaheb," the minister said. Jadhav also criticised Uddhav Thackeray for not condemning the alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, which is facing unrest.

"Uddhav Thackeray has abandoned Shiv Sena's ideology while he calls us traitors," he claimed. After a rebellion led by Shinde against the Sena leadership in June 2022, the party split and led to the collapse of the then MVA government headed by Uddhav Thackeray. PTI

10:21   Doc rape-murder: Strike for 4th day across Bengal
Hospital services across West Bengal were disrupted on Monday as junior doctors, interns, and postgraduate trainees continued their strike for the fourth consecutive day, protesting the rape and murder of a woman doctor and demanding a magisterial inquiry into her death.

Over the past three days, junior doctors had been attending to emergency duties, but as of Monday morning, they have ceased even those responsibilities, sources said.

"We want an impartial investigation into the murder of our colleague, either by the CBI or a sitting magistrate. We are dissatisfied with the current police investigation and will continue our protest until justice is served and the state ensures foolproof security for all doctors and healthcare workers," said a protesting junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident took place.

The body of the woman post-graduate trainee was found inside a seminar hall of the hospital on Friday morning.

A civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime. To tackle the situation, the state government has canceled the leave of all senior doctors to manage the situation.

"Our senior doctors are on duty, and we hope they will handle the patient influx. They have been instructed to work until the situation stabilises," an official told PTI.

On Mondays, the outpatient departments of state government hospitals experience a large volume of patients. Support for the agitating doctors has been pouring in from various parts of the country. The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) has endorsed the strike and called for a nationwide halt of elective services on Monday, informing the Union Health Ministry of their decision.

The West Bengal Doctors Forum has also appealed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for an impartial inquiry committee to investigate the rape and murder of the doctor. Additionally, they have demanded increased security for doctors and health workers across the state and capital punishment for the perpetrator. PTI

08:35   PT Usha defends IOA medical team over Phogat's disqualification
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Dr PT Usha on Sunday clarified that the responsibility of weight management of athletes in sport like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and judo is that of each athlete and his or her coach and not that of the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team.

Dr Usha said that each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sport had his or her own support team. These support teams have been working with the athletes over so many years, as per a statement from IOA.

The IOA appointed a medical team a couple of months ago, primarily as a team that would assist in the recovery and injury management of athletes during and after their competition. This team was also designed to support athletes who did not have their own team of nutritionists and physiotherapists.

PT Usha said that the hate directed at the IOA medical team, especially Dr Pardiwala, is unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.

She expressed hope that those rushing to judge the IOA medical team would consider all the facts before arriving at any conclusions.

This statement comes after Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women's 50 kg final as she breached the weight limit ahead of the title clash.

Notably, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has extended the deadline for delivering its verdict on whether to award a silver medal to Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the Paris Olympics, till Tuesday, August 13.

According to a statement from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), CAS has extended the time for the final verdict till Tuesday, August 13, 6:00 PM Paris time (9:30 PM IST).
