23:18   NIA arrests 2 for harbouring terrorists involved in civilian killings in J-K
The National Investigation Agency has arrested two persons for allegedly harbouring terrorists who had killed seven innocent civilians in Dhangri village of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district early this year.

Nisar Ahmed alias 'Haji Nisar' and Mushtaq Hussain, both of whom are presently lodged in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal (Jammu) in another case, were formally arrested by the NIA on Thursday, the central agency said in a statement in Jammu.

It said they were produced before the Special NIA Court, Jammu on Friday and were sent to NIA custody for 12 days.

Five persons were killed when terrorists fired indiscriminately on members of the minority community at Dhangri village on January 1.

Two more persons were killed and several others injured when an Improvised Explosive Device, which was left behind by the terrorists before fleeing the village, exploded.

During the course of investigations, the statement said, a team of NIA officials camped for quite some time in the hilly terrain of Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi districts of J-K and examined a large number of suspicious entities and later zeroed in on the two accused who had provided "logistics support to the terrorists for more than two months".

The case was initially registered at Police Station Rajouri under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Arms Act. NIA re-registered the case on January 13. -- PTI

23:15   Rakhi Sawant files defamation complaint against friend
Actor and model Rakhi Sawant on Saturday filed a criminal defamation complaint in a court here against her friend for `comparing her to a dog' and making unsavoury remarks about her character.

In the complaint filed before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate, Sawant sought action against her friend Rajashree Morey under Indian Penal Code sections 500 (defamation), 504 (intentional insults and provocation), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (intending to insult the modesty of a woman).

Morey, who runs a nail art studio, had a tiff with Sawant, following which she allegedly made the comments at a press conference.

Its video is available online, said Sawant's plea, filed through advocate Ali Kaashif Khan.

Morey blatantly implied and accused Sawant of being involved in prostitution and thus "outraged her modesty" in public, the plea alleged.

Further, she also compared the actor to a dog and questioned her mental health, the complaint said.

The matter will be heard on November 6. -- PTI

22:18   YSRTP chief Sharmila says talks with Cong in final stages
YSR Telangana Congress Party founder YS Sharmila on Saturday said her discussions with Congress party on working together or a possible "merger" have come to a final stage.

Sharmila had held talks with Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the national capital, amid speculation about YSRTP's merger with the grand old party.

"Prolonged discussions were held (between Sharmila and Gandhis). We discussed how to work together and how to defeat the KCR's (Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao) corrupt government. These discussions have reached final stages," she told reporters after garlanding the statue of her father and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (undivided) YS Rajasekhar Reddy on his death anniversary on Saturday.

She further claimed that Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul were not aware of the inclusion of her father's name in a "quid-pro-quo' case filed against him and his son, the present Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, in 2011 over investments and it was not deliberate.

She said they told her that the party is still feeling the void created by Rajasekhar Reddy after his departure.

The PSLV-C57.1 rocket carrying the Aditya-L1 orbiter, lifted off successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh at 11.50 am on Saturday.

The successful launch of the maiden solar mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation came on the heels of the historic lunar landing mission -- Chandrayaan-3.

The ISRO successfully placed a lander on the unexplored lunar south pole, a feat that put India in the record books as the first country to do so.

According to the agency, the Aditya-L1 mission is expected to reach the observation point in four months.

It will be placed in a halo orbit around Lagrangian Point 1 (or L1), which is 1.5 million km away from the Earth in the direction of the sun.

It will carry seven different payloads to have a detailed study of the sun, four of which will observe the light from the sun and the other three will measure in-situ parameters of the plasma and magnetic fields.

The largest and technically most challenging payload on Aditya-L1 is the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph or VELC.

VELC was integrated, tested, and calibrated at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics' Centre for Research and Education in Science Technology campus in Hosakote in collaboration with ISRO.  -- ANI

11:21   'One nation, one election' not practical: Tharoor
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday criticised the BJP-led Centre's proposal for 'one nation, one election', saying there is no practical way in which such a system can be implemented.

Talking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on his first visit to his Lok Sabha constituency after becoming a member of the Congress Working Committee, Tharoor said the 'one nation, one election' initiative of the government would be against the existing system, which is based on parliamentary democracy, where parties cannot continue in power if they lose the majority in the house.

"There is no practical way in which you can implement such a system. The second concern that many of us have is that the big diversity of India actually benefits from the staggered calendar that has evolved over the years," Tharoor said.

Former president Ram Nath Kovind was on Friday tasked by the Centre with the responsibility of heading a committee to explore the feasibility of 'one nation, one election'.

The committee will explore how the country can go back to having simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, as was the case till 1967.

Tharoor said the Chief Executive of the country is selected by a parliamentary majority and a legislative majority, and the moment that majority goes, for whatever reason, the government falls.

Then a new election has to be held out of sync with the calendar.

He said that between 1947 and 1967, India had all national and state elections on the same date, but the system collapsed when the coalition government fell in 1967 and the calendar slipped.

Then the national government fell in 1970, and elections were held in 1971, he said.

"Therefore, that calendar also slipped There's been a number of changes, and that's why now there are different calendars for different states. The same thing will happen again in the future," Tharoor said.

He said the opposition would attentively listen to Ramnath Kovind's committee on this.

"Let us see if Mr Kovind's committee can come up with any practical solutions. We will listen attentively, but we have every reason to have a lot of scepticism about this entire initiative," Tharoor added. -- PTI

11:18   Mohamed Al-Fayed, billionaire whose son died with Princess Diana, no more
Mohamed Al-Fayed, the outspoken Egyptian tycoon who turned around the fortunes of two iconic London institutions -- Harrods department store and Fulham Football Club -- and waged a war of words with the British royal family after his son was killed in a car accident alongside Diana, Princess of Wales, has passed away at 94, CNN reported citing a statement from his family.

"Mrs Mohamed Al Fayed, her children and grandchildren wish to confirm that her beloved husband, their father and their grandfather, Mohamed, has passed away peacefully of old age on Wednesday, August 30, 2023," the family statement, which was released by Fulham FC on Friday, said.

After moving to the UK in the 1970s, Al-Fayed bought a number of lavish businesses and forced his way into London's high society. He also owned the legendary Ritz Hotel in Paris for four decades.

He became a more controversial figure, nevertheless, when he publicly fought for British citizenship, and even more so after Diana and his son Dodi Fayed passed away in Paris in 1997, according to CNN.

Despite investigations showing otherwise, Al-Fayed believed for decades that the two had been killed, and in his later years, he was contemptuous of the British royal family.

Al-Fayed, born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1929, made the most of the opportunities and chances that came his way during his brief union with Saudi author Samira Khashoggi, who is also the sister of wealthy arms trader Adnan Khashoggi.

The tycoon's fractious relationship with the British elite rose to fame alongside his investments at the same time.

He publicly battled for British citizenship for many years; this fight got started when Rowland questioned him about where his money came from. Then, in 1994, he named British legislators who had taken money from him in exchange for asking questions in Parliament on his behalf, causing a political crisis, as reported by CNN.

After his son and Diana were killed in a car accident in 1997, Al-Fayed repeatedly insulted the British royal family and became a persona non grata among some of the nation's elite.

"I live in a country where I feel sorry for the ordinary people and the masses of the people who live in this country. Their destiny and their human rights are kidnapped by gangsters and people who call themselves the establishment," he once told CNN.

10:55   Man shoots wife dead and dies soon afterwards due to 'heart attack'
A 56-year-old man allegedly shot dead his wife, but soon afterwards collapsed and died, apparently due to a heart attack, at their residence in Thane city of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 10.15 pm on Friday in Yashwant Nivas building located in Kumbhar Ali of Kalwa, they said.

The victims were identified as Dileep Salvi and his 51-year-old wife Pramila, the police said.

A police official said, "Soon after Salvi returned home on Friday night, an altercation broke out between him and his wife. In a fit of rage, he took out his revolver and fired two rounds at his wife, who died on the spot."

Soon afterwards, Salvi collapsed on the ground and died after apparently suffering a heart attack, he said.

Sources close to Salvi said when the latter pointed his revolver at his wife, she raised an alarm and called her son, but before he could arrive at the spot she was dead.

The exact motive behind the killing is being ascertained by the police, the official said.

According to police, Salvi belonged to an influential family in Kalwa as its members are known to be involved in local politics and social activities. A number of civic and other projects are named after his father late Yashwant Rama Salvi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Ganesh Gawade visited the site after the incident and he is supervising a probe.

The bodies of the couple were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem and an offence is being registered, the police said. -- PTI

10:49   Special Parliament session could be precursor to...: Nitish
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asserted that the Narendra Modi government at the Centre has lent credence to his anticipation of early Lok Sabha polls by convening a special session of Parliament.

The Janata Dal-United leader made the remark here while replying to queries from journalists after returning from Mumbai where the opposition coalition INDIA held the latest round of talks.

"You need to understand that this special session is a sign that they are thinking of early polls, the possibility of which I have been seeing and sharing with you all for quite some time," he told reporters on Friday.

Parliament, which was last month adjourned sine die after the monsoon session, will meet from September 18 to 22 for a special session of which the Centre has not made public the agenda.

The JD(U) leader, whose party has 16 MPs in the Lok Sabha, did not respond to queries about 'one nation one election', but added, "There are issues which will be strongly raised during the upcoming session."

"This government is dragging its feet on the issue of caste census. Forget a caste census, it has not even begun the census which, as per norms, should have been completed long back. This government has time for all other things," said the former NDA ally, who got a caste survey done in the state after the Centre made it clear that it would not conduct separate headcounts for social groups other than SCs and STs. -- PTI
