The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on April 1 the bail plea of former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last year in connection with a money laundering case.

The seat will be contested by RJD, which recently gave the party ticket to JD-U turncoat Bima Bharti, but stopped short announcing it formally.

The Mahagathbandhan's seat-sharing announcement comes a day after the filing of nomination papers for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls was over.

The RJD has fielded its candidates in all four seats going to polls in the first phase, in what has been resented by allies as a "unilateral move". -- PTI

13:46   Toll rates on Mumbai's Bandra-Worli sea link to go up by 18% from April 1
The toll charges on Mumbai's iconic Rajiv Gandhi Bandra Worli Sea Link will increase by about 18 percent from April 1, officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation said on Friday.

An MSRDC spokesperson told PTI that the new toll rates for one-way journeys for cars and jeeps will be Rs 100 from the beginning of next month, while minibuses, tempos and other similar vehicles will have to pay Rs 160 for it.

Two-axle trucks will be charged Rs 210 for a one-way trip on the cable-stayed bridge on the Arabian Sea.

Motorists using the eight-lane overpass now pay Rs 85 for cars and jeeps, Rs 130 for minibuses, tempos and light commercial vehicles, and Rs 175 for two-axle trucks and buses.

These rates have been in force since April 1, 2021.

The new toll rates on the sea link, which opened for traffic in 2009, will be applicable between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2027, he said.

Every day, scores of motorists use the sea link, connecting Worli in the Island City and Bandra in the Western suburbs of Mumbai for south-and-north-bound travel, avoiding traffic snarls in Mahim, Dadar, Prabhadevi and Worli areas.

As per the MSRDC official, motorists will get a rebate of 10 percent and 20 percent on the purchase of booklets containing 50 and 100 toll coupons in advance, respectively. -- PTI

00:06   Cong moves EC against 'misleading' BJP ads
The Congress has complained to the Election Commission against the Bharatiya Janata Party's 'misleading' advertisements and posters promoting various government schemes and sought their removal.

The opposition party also sought action against the alleged violation of poll code by senior BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying no action was taken by the EC on issues raised by them earlier.

A delegation of Congress leaders, including Mukul Wasnik, Salman Khurshid, Supriya Shrinate and Gurdeep Sappal, had met the EC and raised nine issues before the poll panel.

Khurshid had said the party complained to the EC on the manner in which campaigning is being done by the BJP during the Lok Sabha polls.

"People are pained at the manner in which the BJP is issuing advertisements and posters. We have objected to the manner in which the government schemes are being promoted with the prime minister's photograph and such a campaign during polls cannot take place. The EC has already taken note of such things and has assured us to take up our complaints," Khurshid said.

He hoped that the EC will come forward and use its powers to act against the complaints to ensure a level playing field during the polls.

Shrinate had said, "We have raised nine such issues before the EC and we hope that it will take action on such fake news and misleading advertisements to ensure a level playing field."

Shrinate also alleged that the BJP is running a campaign on 2G issue and is trying to create an illusion.

"The courts have also said that there is no culpability on the 2G issue, and running such a video after 10 years is objectionable. We have raised our complaint against the content and have urged the Election Commission to remove such a campaign.

"Secondly, the campaign that Modi ji has got the (Russia-Ukraine) war stopped. We have urged the EC to stop such kind of videos to misguide people. We have also raised misleading video using the army, which is banned as the model code is in force," she said.

Shrinate claimed that a letter seeking support for a 'Viksit Bharat' written by the prime minister is being circulated on social media and WhatsApp by the BJP and they had complained against it.

The EC has said that some issues have already been dealt with, she said.

She also alleged that the BJP is using religious issues and other leaders like the prime minister and union minister Shobha Karandlaje.   -- PTI
