Former Union minister Anand Sharma will "definitely" be a minister in an INDIA bloc government at the Centre, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Sunday.

Sharma, who served as the Union minister for commerce and industry between 2009 and 2014, is the Congress candidate from the Kangra Lok Sabha seat.

Campaigning for Sharma in the Jwalamukhi assembly segment, Sukhu highlighted the former Union minister's contributions to the state during his previous stint in the central government.

"Kangra needs an MP whose voice is heard across the country. Anand Sharma has been fielded from Kangra as he is a tall leader and contributed a lot to Himachal as Union minister," Sukhu said.

The National Institute of Fashion Technology in Kangra, spice park in Nadaun, regional passport office in Shimla, expansion of industrial areas in the state, and the Shimla-Matour four-lane highway are results of his vision.

If Sharma wins, his berth in an INDIA bloc government is certain, Sukhu asserted.

Sharma and other Congress functionaries were also present at the rally.

The chief minister also accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy to topple the state's Congress government.

Sukhu said rumours had been spread that he had resigned, Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur said even God could not save the government. -- PTI

19:27   Pro-Khalistani slogans appear on pillars of Delhi metro stations
Pro-Khalistani slogans were found written on pillars of Delhi metro stations on Sunday, prompting police to launch an investigation.

The slogans were seen at Karol Bagh and Jhandewalan Metro Stations.

Reportedly, the slogans were written by supporters of Sikhs For Justice, a banned Sikh separatist group based in the United States.

An FIR has been filed by the Delhi police, and CCTV footage of the two metro stations has been obtained from the Delhi Metro authorities.

A security guard at a building close to the Karol Bagh Metro station said that he noticed the writing in black paint on the pillars of the metro station when he came for duty on Sunday morning.

"I came to duty at 8 am and saw that something was written in black colour on the pillars of the metro station. A huge crowd had gathered there and was reading the slogans," Bajrangi, the security guard, said.

"These slogans may have been written at night because no one was there at that time and no one saw who wrote these slogans," he added.

In a similar incident in January this year, the Delhi police apprehended a man for his alleged involvement in making pro-Khalistani graffiti on walls in Delhi's Tilak Nagar area.

In August last year, the Delhi police Special Cell detained two persons from Punjab in connection with pro-Khalistan graffiti and slogans painted at more than five metro stations in Delhi. -- ANI

18:51   Special security measures in polling booths in Maoist-hit areas: Odisha DGP
Special security arrangements have been made in polling booths located in left wing extremist affected areas of Odisha going to polls on May 13, director general of police Arun Sarangi said on Sunday.

Voting will be held in four Lok Sabha and 28 MLA segments in nine districts in the first phase on May 13, of which six districts -- Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada and Kalahandi -- are Maoist affected, he told a press conference.

Elections will be held in 7,298 polling stations, of which 537 booths are located in the LWE (left-wing extremism) affected areas.

To ensure free and fair elections in these areas, special operational arrangements have been launched, Sarangi said.

"We have launched 539 anti-Maoist operations in these districts since January first week and one Maoist leader was neutralised in Nabarangpur district, while 138 operational parties of CAPF and 37 units of SOG/DVF (state armed police force) are in action," the DGP said.

The security force units are conducting operations and area-dominating exercises in the Maoist-hit areas, he said.

As the election in Chhattisgarh has already been completed, it was expected that some Maoists may infiltrate into Odisha from the neighbouring state. So, Chhattisgarh is also launching operations in five locations whereas Andhra Pradesh is launching nine such operations in the bordering areas, the Odisha DGP said. -- PTI

18:26   Mehbooba seeks EC intervention over 'harassment', 'arrest' of PDP workers
People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday sought intervention of the Election Commission to stop the alleged harassment and arrest of her party workers, a day ahead of the polls in Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency.

The PDP candidate for Srinagar Lok Sabha seat Waheed Para has accused a senior IPS officer of trying to engineer a low voter turnout in areas where the party has a strong support base.

"I am writing to you with a profound sense of urgency and grave concern regarding the troubling developments in the run-up to the elections in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, scheduled for May 13. It has come to my attention that the state administration, under the control of the Union government, is shamelessly engaged in activities aimed at intimidating voters and supporters of the People's Democratic Party," Mufti said in the letter to the commission.

She referred to the 1987 assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir saying it is distressing to witness history repeating itself, reminiscent of the 1987 rigged elections that caused immense suffering and political disillusionment in the region.

The former chief minister said she was "deeply troubled" by reports that the security agencies were conducting raids and harassing PDP workers in Pulwama and Shopian districts. -- PTI

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal challenging a Delhi high court order upholding the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation case for retweeting an allegedly defamatory video circulated by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in May 2018.

17:04   28 killed in flash floods, cold lava flow in Indonesia
At least 28 people, including children, have died after flash floods and cold lava flew from a volcano hit western Indonesia, Al Jazeera reported, citing rescue officials.

Basarnas Search and Rescue Agency said in a statement on Sunday, mentioning that the disaster hit Agam and Tanah Datar districts in the West Sumatra province at about 10:30 pm (15:30 GMT) on Saturday after hours of heavy rain, triggering a flash flood and a cold lava flow from Mount Merapi.

Moreover, photos and videos posted on social media showed large rocks and thick mud covering the streets of West Sumatra, as reported by Al Jazeera.

The disaster comes just two months after another deadly flooding hit the same island.

Meanwhile, the local government set up evacuation centres and emergency posts in several spots in the two districts to extend help, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Notably, Indonesia is prone to landslides and floods during the rainy season.

15:44   BJP leaders demands CBI probe into sexual abuse cases, accuse SIT of 'witch hunting'
Leaders of the Oppositon Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka on Sunday continued their demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into sexual abuse charges against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna and related cases, to ensure a fair investigation.

The 33-year-old JD-S MP, who is grandson of JD-S patriarch and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, is facing charges of sexually abusing women.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD-S engaged in a slugfest.

While the Congress government has formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the cases, the BJP and JD-S -- NDA partners -- have demanded that it be handed over to the CBI, and action taken against those behind the circulation of explicit videos.

BJP leader and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said bringing out the guilty and ensuring punishment was the primary duty of the SIT, and accused it of "witch hunting".

"People are questioning the way in which the inquiry is progressing. A complaint has been lodged with the National Commission of Women about (a woman) being forced to file a complaint (in connection with case), also complaints are being filed against those who gave information about the sexual abuse case," Bommai said. Addressing reporters in Bengaluru, he said, bringing the guilty to book and ensuring punishment to them is the primary duty of the SIT, but instead "witch hunting" is being done, and thereby causing investigation to lose track. -- PTI

14:40   India to overtake Japan as 4th largest economy by 2025: Amitabh Kant
Citing various macroeconomic parameters that are doing pretty well, India's G20 Sherpa and former CEO of Niti Aayog Amitabh Kant projected that the country is all set to overtake Japan as 4th largest economy in the world by 2025.

The size of India's GDP is currently ranked 5th, after the US, China, Germany, and Japan.

It overtook the UK in 2022.

Just a decade ago, Indian GDP was the eleventh largest in the world. Currently, India's GDP is estimated to be around $3.7 trillion.

Some highlights of India's journey to the top 5 economies of the world in 2024 from fragile 5 in 2013, according to Kant, among others, record GST collection, over 8 percent GDP growth in the past three quarters, trading in Indian currency Rupee with various countries (to be precise 27), inflation at manageable levels.

The term fragile 5 was coined by a Morgan Stanley analyst in 2013 and refers to a set of five emerging countries, including India, whose economy was not doing well back then.

13:21   UDF ally RMP leader's remark against Kerala ex-health minister, actor triggers row
A leader of the Revolutionary Marxist Party, a key constituent in the opposition Congress-led UDF, has courted controversy for making an alleged sexist remark against senior CPI-M leader KK Shailaja and Malayalam film actress Maju Warrier.

RMP leader KS Hariharan made the objectionable remark on Saturday night while speaking at a meeting in Vadakara here which was inaugurated by Leader of Opposition in the state assembly VD Satheesan.

The event was organised in response to the ruling LDF's charges that UDF workers had made a morphed video of Shailaja who was a candidate in Vadakara in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.

As the remark sparked a huge political storm, his own party high command and the UDF openly criticised him and said Hariharan should not have made such objectionable comments against any woman.

Later, Hariharan came out with a Facebook post saying friends and journalists brought to his notice that he had made an "inappropriate" remark during the speech.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader and former chief minister Hemant Soren challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.

11:56   Kharge's helicopter checked in Bihar, poll officials 'targeting' Oppn leaders: Cong
Opposition leaders are being targeted by poll officials, the Congress alleged on Sunday, claiming that while its chief Mallikarjun Kharge's helicopter was checked in Bihar's Samastipur, leaders of the BJP-led NDA were being allowed to move "freely".

Kharge on Saturday addressed back-to-back Lok Sabha election rallies in Samastipur and Muzaffarpur in the state.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's helicopter was checked in Kerala and, now, party president Kharge's has been checked in Bihar's Samastipur, Congress leader Rajesh Rathorre claimed in a video message on X.

Rathorre, who is the chief spokesperson of the Congress' Bihar unit, also shared a video to claim that the chief electoral officer of Bihar is herself monitoring the checking of Kharge's helicopter in Samastipur.

The video showed a helicopter with officials, including from police, around it.

"The Election Commission should clarify whether such checking of choppers of Congress leaders is routine and whether similar checks were also conducted on top leaders of the NDA," Rathorre said in his video message. -- PTI

11:27   Fuel-carrying railway rake reaches Tripura after 15 days
After a hiatus of 15 days, a petroleum products-carrying train reached Dharmanagar railway station in North Tripura district as the railway tracks in a hilly section of Assam's Dima Hasao district were put to function post-restoration.

The recent derailment incident between Jatinga Lumpur and New Harangajao disrupted goods trains and exacerbated the fuel shortage in Tripura.

Indian Oil Corporation Limited state coordinator Pramit Dhar told ANI that unloading of the product had already started based on the requirement of the North Tripura district and on Sunday the rake will reach Agartala railway station.

"The railway department has informed that the restoration work is completed and now the petroleum carrying rakes can move without any hassle.

After the clearance from the railways, the first train was moved which successfully reached Tripura at around 3:30 pm," Dhar has said.

On being asked whether more trains were coming or not, he said, "Another train is now at a halt at Silchar in Assam. After addressing the supply requirements there, it will steadily move towards Tripura."

According to Dhar, primarily crisis of petrol is hurting the public and the restoration of the railway tracks would help mitigate the problems.

The train comprises as many as 49 wagons, including 19 filled with diesel and 30 loaded with petrol. -- ANI

10:18   Groom fled before wedding: BJP on Cong's Indore fiasco
Taking a dig at the Congress over its Indore Lok Sabha seat candidate withdrawing from the fray at the last moment, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has said it was not his party's fault if the "bridegroom fled before the wedding".

The Congress received a jolt in Indore after its candidate Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his nomination on April 29, the last date of withdrawal, and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"The Congress claimed that the BJP did something wrong in Indore. What was our fault? It is like inviting the entire village to the wedding feast and the groom running away before the marriage ceremony," Yadav said at the BJP's campaign rally at Betma near here on Saturday.

The opposition party, which has no candidate left in the fray for the May 13 election in Indore, is insulting democracy by appealing to local voters to press the NOTA (None Of The Above) button, the chief minister said.
"If someone's child runs away from home, whose fault is it? They are your children, you should take care of them," he said.

Yadav also participated in a roadshow in Indore city in support of BJP candidate and sitting MP Shankar Lalwani.

Terming the opposition INDIA bloc as "Ghamandiya" alliance, Yadav evoked the epic Ramayana and the city of Lanka, the capital of its arch-villain Ravan.

"These arrogant people were born in Lanka 17 lakh years ago during the time of Lord Ram. Due to the bankruptcy of their intellect, they posed as fake saffron-clad (monks) to abduct Sita," the chief minister said during the roadshow. -- PTI

09:50   Why didn't chowkidar...: Kharge on Adani-Ambani charge
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning why his government did not take any action if, as per his allegation, industrialists Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani were sending black money to the opposition party.

Addressing back-to-back election rallies in Bihar's Samastipur and Muzaffarpur, Kharge asserted that Modi could become the prime minister of India only because Congress fought for its Independence.

"PM Modi says we are silent on Ambani and Adani, we are not... I am asking why his government did not take any action if, according to his allegation, we received black money from these industrialists? Is it because they themselves received black money?" Kharge asked.

"Finally, the PM has admitted that these two businessmen have black money... Then why did you not take action against them? Where was the black money coming from? You should answer," he said.

Modi on Wednesday, for the first time during the Lok Sabha elections, accused the Congress of having a "deal" with "Ambani and Adani", and asked if the party had received "tempo loads of black money" from the two industrialists.

Kharge said that the PM calls himself "chowkidar" of the country, "so why did not the chowkidar stop these tempos?"

Alleging that the BJP would end democracy if it was not voted out, Kharge said it was because of this democracy that a tea-seller's son could become the prime minister of India and he, the son of a labourer, could become the president of the opposition Congress.

He alleged that the BJP was spreading communal hatred to divert the attention of the people from issues that mattered.

"Neither the PM nor other BJP leaders will talk about issues such as growing unemployment or price rise. They are spreading communal hatred. The forces that are attacking the Constitution and spreading the politics of hate, must be defeated. They are dividing this country on lines of religion and castes," he alleged.

Recalling the contributions made by the Congress for India, he said former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed their lives for the country and the people got the right to vote due to the struggles of icons such as Mahatma Gandhi and Rajendra Prasad. -- PTI

09:00   4th Indian arrested in Canada in Nijjar murder case
A fourth Indian national has been arrested by Canadian authorities in connection with the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in this country, a week after police arrested three Indians linked with the high-profile case that has severely strained India's relations with Canada.

Amardeep Singh, 22, a resident of Brampton, Surrey, and Abbotsford areas of Canada, has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Nijjar, 45, was killed outside Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18, 2023.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said that Singh was arrested on May 11 for his role in the killing of Nijjar. He was already in the custody of the Peel Regional Police for unrelated firearms charges, the release said.

"This arrest shows the nature of our ongoing investigation to hold responsible those that played a role in the homicide of Hardeep Singh Nijjar," said Superintendent Mandeep Mooker, the Officer in Charge of IHIT.

"IHIT pursued the evidence and gained sufficient information for the British Columbia  Prosecution Service to charge Amandeep Singh with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder," the police statement said.

Investigators said no further details of the arrest can be released due to ongoing investigations and court processes.

IHIT investigators on May 3 arrested three Indian nationals -- Karan Brar (22), Kamalpreet Singh (22) and 28-year-old Karanpreet Singh -- for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

All three individuals are Indian nationals living in Edmonton and have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations in September last year of the "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar.

India has dismissed Trudeau's charges as "absurd" and "motivated."
