23:10   Kerala's Orthodox Church urges guv not to give assent to 'Church Bill' if ...
Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church head Baselios Marthoma Mathews III on Sunday urged the Kerala Governor not to give his assent to any ordinance or legislation in connection with a 'Church Bill' that rumours say could be introduced by the Government of Kerala.

The Orthodox and the Jacobite factions of the church have been at war over the control of certain churches in the state since 1970.

The feud between the two factions intensified following the implementation of a 2017 Supreme Court order, granting the Orthodox faction possession of over 1,000 churches and properties attached to them.

However, the order has not been fully implemented until now due to protests from both factions.

Mathews III said there were rumours that a 'Church Bill' would be introduced. He pointed out that the Supreme Court order is the law of the land and asked the Governor to use his discretionary power if any law or ordinance is introduced to bypass the apex court verdict favouring the Orthodox church.

"If any legislation or ordinance against that law is placed before you (the Governor) for approval to disregard the 2017 judgment favouring Malankara Orthodox Church by the ruling government of Kerala, we strongly believe that Your Excellency will use your discretion to give justice due to the Malankara Orthodox Church," the Orthodox church head said at an event in Kottayam. -- PTI

21:36   Govt denies entry to attend conference in K'taka, claims Indian-origin UK prof
University of Westminster professor Nitasha Kaul on Sunday alleged that she was denied entry into India to deliver a speech at a conference in Karnataka.

She said the entry denial came despite she had all necessary documents and the Karnataka government invited her to attend the conference, she said on X.

The Indian-origin UK professor alleged that she was denied entry because of her earlier criticism of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

"I was given no reason by immigration except 'we cannot do anything, orders from Delhi'. My travel & logistics had been arranged by Karnataka & I had the official letter with me. I received no notice or info in advance from Delhi that I would not be allowed to enter," Prof Kaul wrote on X.

"I spent 12 hours in a flight from London to Bangalore, several hours at immigration where they shuttled me here & there, provided no info on process, then 24 hours in a holding cell (no BA flight back until next day) under direct cctv w restricted movement, a narrow area to lie down and no easy access to food and water, made dozens of calls to airport for basic things as a pillow and blanket, which they refused to provide, then 12 hours on the flight back to London," Kaul added.

"Decades of my work speaks for me. The officials informally made references to my criticism of RSS, a far-right Hindu nationalist paramilitary from years ago. I have travelled to India numerous times since. I was invited by a state govt, but refused entry by the central govt," she said on X.

"This is also about what knowledge-making can do! Banning academics, journalists, activists, writers from India in spite of all valid documents is pathetic. The evidence is in public. In the country, academic institutions are being forced to toe the line (I have published on this), and outside the country now too, academic silencing," she said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday said Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange must not test the patience of his government after the latter made wild allegations against deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Speaking in Antarwali Sarati earlier in the day, Jarange said Fadnavis was trying to kill him. Jarange had also said a poisoning attempt was made against him through saline, though he did not elaborate on the claim.

"Those who are protesting again and again against the government must not test our patience. They should not create a law and order problem. I wonder why Jarange's speech looks like the script generally used by Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray," Shinde said.

13:56   Social media platform 'X shutdown continues for eighth day in Pakistan
Even after eight days, the services of social media giant X, formerly Twitter, remained suspended across Pakistan while the authorities have yet to disclose the reason behind the prolonged disruption, Pakistan-based Geo News reported.

The shutdown began on Saturday last week, resulting in users not being able to access information on social media platform X.

Global internet monitor, NetBlocks, said VPN services have also been restricted in Pakistan, resulting in users facing difficulty accessing the micro-blogging site.

Website tracker Downdetector.com said, "User reports indicate possible problems at X (Twitter)." Speaking to Geo TV, Nighat Dad, the executive director of the Digital Rights Foundation," said that the X outage is causing a damage to Paksitan's image.

She further said that the PTA is not being transparent regarding these outages and disruptions.

13:06   Tens of thousands of women offer pongala at Kerala's Attukal Devi temple
Under the slightly cool relief of a cloudy sky, tens of thousands of women gathered in the Kerala capital on Sunday to partake in a sacred ritual known as 'Pongala.'

This ritual, considered one of the largest religious gatherings of women in the world, saw makeshift brick stoves line the roads for several kilometers in the city as women prepared offerings to honour the presiding deity of the famous Attukal Bhagavathy temple.

The rituals began shortly after, at 10.40 am, when the chief priest lit the main hearth (Pandara Aduppu) near the shrine, signaling the start of the annual event.

Women from all across the state and outside prepared 'pongala', a mix of rice, jaggery, and scraped coconut, in fresh earthen pots by lining up on either side of the roads for kilometers around the shrine in the state capital.

The ritual had made it to the Guinness Book of World Records in 2009 for being the largest religious gathering of women on a single day when 2.5 million took part in it.

Women have been arriving in the state capital since Thursday to grab good spots for setting up their brick hearths where they will prepare 'pongala'.

The pongala festival marks the finale of a 10-day ritual at the shrine.

Preparing 'pongala' is considered an auspicious all-women ritual as part of the annual festival of the Attukal temple here, popularly known as the 'Women's Sabarimala'. -- PTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast will not be aired for the next three months in line with political decorum in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

"It is a programme of the people, for the people and by the people," the prime minister said.

"When we meet the next time, it will be 111th episode of the Mann Ki Baat," Modi added, noting the auspiciousness associated with the number.

11:14   Farmers' stir: Internet restored in 7 districts
Mobile internet services were restored in seven Haryana districts on Sunday, almost two weeks after they were suspended in the wake of farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' agitation, officials said.

The services were suspended in Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa on February 11 and the suspension was extended on February 13, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24.

Officials said no fresh order has been issued to extend the suspension of the mobile services in the seven districts.

According to an earlier order issued by the Home Department, the curbs were imposed 'to prevent any disturbance of peace and public order in jurisdictions of Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa, including Dabwali, districts in Haryana'.

Residents welcomed the government's decision.

Protesting farmers from Punjab taking part in the march have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri points of the state's border with Haryana since February 13, when their march was stopped by security personnel.

The farmers will continue to stay put at the two border points till February 29, when the next course of action will be decided, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher had said on Friday.

08:56   Sandeshkhali: TMC minister gets 'no complaints' of assault
Trinamool Congress (TMC) state ministers Sujit Bose and Partha Bhowmik interacted with the locals of Sandeshkhali on Saturday.

After interacting with the villagers, West Bengal Irrigation Minister Partha Bhowmick said that not a single woman has raised the issue of assault.

Bhowmick said, "We have interacted with the locals today. We will try to resolve the problems. There are cases of land grabbing. Land will be given back to those from whom it was snatched. The DM has also set up camps in several districts. No woman has raised the issue of assault. This is fake and it has been established today. Those who are bad have no place in TMC. We will again visit here."

He further said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Abhishek Banerjee, there is zero tolerance for any wrongdoers in the party.

"Shahjahan Sheikh not being arrested is the failure of the Enforcement Directorate. TMC didn't take any time to remove a big leader like Partha Chatterjee. Why will the same party find it difficult to remove this small leader like Shahjahan Sheikh? We are taking confidence-building measures, and the damage has been controlled. BJP has no place here," he added.

West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose said that those whose lands have been grabbed will get justice.

Sujit Bose said, "We will solve the problems of the people here. Those whose lands have been grabbed will be taken care of. We have asked them to file a complaint. We will again visit this place. Action will be taken against all those who are the culprits. We will come tomorrow and the day after tomorrow also."

He further said that the villagers are not afraid anymore.

"The problem exists in four to five booths, not the entire Sandeshkhali. The culprits will be punished. The party has already expelled Uttam Sardar and Shiba Prasad Hazra," he added.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that the issue of land grabbing and non-payment is real but the news regarding the atrocities against women is fake.

Kunal Ghosh said, "No TMC delegation has gone to Sandeshkhali, but TMC Ministers Partha Bhowmick and Sujit Bose have visited the place. They are looking after the problems and allegations. In Sandeshkhali, the issue of land grabbing and non-payment is real, but the news regarding the atrocities against women is fake. CPI-M and BJP in the state are doing this to malign the image of TMC."

A large number of women in Sandeshkhali had accused Trinamool Congress strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of 'land-grab and sexually assaulting' them under coercion.

Shahjahan continues to evade arrest, with both state police and central agencies unable to trace him.  -- ANI
