22:56   AAP, Congress seal alliance in Chandigarh
The Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress forged an alliance on Monday for the upcoming Chandigarh mayoral polls.

Under the arrangement, the AAP will fight for the mayor's seat while the Congress will contest the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, senior Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal said in Chandigarh.

The development came amid the two constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) holding talks over seat sharing for this year's Lok Sabha polls.

But the state units of both parties in Punjab appear reluctant so far to make any concession to the other side.

The Congress and the AAP have been separately claiming that they will win all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab.

After announcing the alliance of his party with the AAP for the January 18 polls, Bansal said, "This is the beginning of the end of the BJP's misrule in Chandigarh."

Chandigarh Congress president H S Lucky said AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar Tita will contest the polls for the mayor's post while Congress nominees Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi will fight for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor respectively.

Congress candidate Jasbir Bunty has withdrawn his nomination for the mayor's post, while AAP nominees Neha Musavat and Poonam have withdrawn their candidatures for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor respectively.

Speaking on the alliance with the Congress, the AAP's Chandigarh in-charge Jarnail Singh said, "Together, we will easily win this election and finally, Chandigarh will have a mayor from a party other than the BJP."

Singh said the mayoral polls will set an example that the AAP and the Congress together can defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

'To end the dictatorship of the BJP, the AAP and the Congress have decided to fight this election together. The BJP has done nothing for the welfare of Chandigarh and its people but now, all of it will change. With the AAP mayor, Chandigarh will see new heights of development and public welfare projects,' he said in a statement.

With the AAP and the Congress deciding on a tie-up for the Chandigarh mayoral polls, the contest is going to be two-way and observers believe that the two parties will have an edge over the BJP.

In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP has 14 councillors. It also has an ex-officio member MP who has voting rights. The AAP has 13 councillors and the Congress seven.

The Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor in the House.

The polls for the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor will be held on Thursday. The mayor is elected by the councillors through secret ballots.

Hence, the possibility of cross-voting cannot be ruled out. The Congress abstained from voting in 2022 and 2023, leading to the BJP's victory in the mayoral polls.

Elections for the three posts are held every year during the five-year term of the House.

This year, the mayor's seat has been reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.   -- PTI

21:55   Sharmila likely to take over as Andhra Cong chief
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president G Rudra Raju on Monday tendered his resignation to the party high command in Delhi, setting off speculation that Y S Sharmila is highly likely to assume that role and take on her brother Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

"Yes, today he (Rudra Raju) resigned," Andhra Pradesh Congress leader Janga Goutham confirmed to PTI.

According to a source, Rudra Raju sensed a hint from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) that it is inclined to appoint Sharmila as Andhra Pradesh PCC president and pit her against her older brother, YSRCP chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Sharmila has already expressed her willingness, saying she is ready to work anywhere that the Congress party fields her, whether it is Andaman & Nicobar Islands or anywhere else.

The source said the new PCC president could be announced only in a few days' time.

Recently, Sharmila merged her YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) with the Congress at Delhi in the presence of Rahul Gandhi, and emerged as a newly-minted frontline Congress leader of Andhra Pradesh.

The state is soon set to hold elections to the legislative assembly, along with the Lok Sabha polls.   -- PTI

21:04   Row over consecration timing: Seers cite Somnath ceremony
Several seers on Monday came out strongly in support of the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram's idol at the temple in Ayodhya, which is scheduled for January 22, amid criticism of the exercise by some 'shankaracharyas' on the ground that the temple is not fully constructed yet.

Endorsing the ceremony, they noted that when the 'Pran Pratishtha' (consecration) ceremony at the Somnath temple in Gujarat was done, it was far from complete and asserted that the exercise in Ayodhya was in line with scriptures.

Shashikant Das of Saryu Aarti said in a statement that the auspicious occasion in Ayodhya has come after a wait and struggle of 500 years and nothing should be done to take away from the enormity of the occasion.

The contribution of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in making it happen should be acknowledged, he said, asserting the entire country will be overflowing with joy on the occasion.

Mahant Narayan Giri of Dudheswar Mandir said the consecration ceremony is an event of great fortune and it was unfortunate that some people were raising an issue over it.

He said holy 'kalash' and 'dhwaja' (flag) were installed in the Somnath temple 14 years after the consecration ceremony, which was attended by the then president Rajendra Prasad.

The then home minister Sardar Patel had played a key role in the temple's reconstruction, he noted.

The Ayodhya ceremony is taking place at an auspicious time in accordance with what scriptures stipulate, and there is an atmosphere of joy in the country, he said, adding that no one should oppose it.

Spiritual leader Devki Nandan Thakur said no one should make an issue about the event.

Citing a book, he said the Somnath ceremony had taken place in 1951 when even its sanctum sanctorum was not fully complete.

The sanctum sanctorum of the Ayodhya temple is ready and so is its first floor, he said, adding that Modi is the first prime minister who 'proudly lives like a sanatani'.

At least two of the four 'shankaracharyas' have criticised the consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, claiming that it was wrong to do so when the temple is still under construction.   -- PTI

20:17   Pranab's daughter presents Modi with copy of her book
Former president Pranab Mukherjee's daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and presented him a copy of her book on her father.

The book, that has references taken from Mukherjee's diaries, was launched on the occasion of his birth anniversary last month.

"Called on PM @narendramodi ji to present him a copy of my book Pranab My Father: A Daughter Remembers. He was as kind to me as he always had been & his regards for Baba remains undiminished. Thank you Sir," Mukherjee said.

Responding to her post on X, PM Modi showered praise on the former President for his "greatness, wisdom and intellectual depth".

"Always a delight to meet you Sharmistha Ji and remember the memorable interactions with Pranab Babu. His greatness, wisdom and intellectual depth is clearly visible in your book!" PM Modi said in the post.

In the book, she said her father felt he was not included in the cabinet of Rajiv Gandhi due to his "non-subservient" attitude. She also touched upon his assessment of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Sharmistha Mukherjee had joined the Congress in 2014. She unsuccessfully contested the Delhi assembly elections from Greater Kailash seat in 2015.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Mukherjee had said in September 2021 that she has "quit politics".

20:08   Ahead of Ram temple consecration, AAP plans 'Sundar Kand' recitals
In an apparent attempt to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party's focus on the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Aam Aadmi Party has announced its plan to hold 'Sundar Kand' recital programmes across Delhi on Tuesdays.

The consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya will be held on January 22 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present there.

AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he will join a 'Sundar Kand' recital event along with his wife in the Rohini area and invited people to attend such programmes to be held near their homes.

'Sundar Kand' is one of the chapters in the Ramayana devoted to Lord Hanuman.

'The Aam Aadmi Party is tomorrow organising Sundar Kand recitals at many places in Delhi for the peace, happiness and progress of all. I will along with my wife join the devotees at a temple in Rohini for the Sundar Kand recital at 3 pm. You all are invited to attend the recitals near your homes as per your convenience,' Kejriwal posted on X.

AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'Sundar Kand recitation programme will be held in all Assembly constituencies and municipal wards on the first Tuesday of every month. Party MLAs, councillors and office bearers will take part in the programmes that will held at over 2,600 places in the city.'

He invited the people of Delhi to participate in the programme enthusiastically.  -- PTI

19:40   UP Cong leaders pay obeisance to Ram Lalla at Ayodhya
Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai and other party leaders took a holy dip in the Saryu river in Ayodhya on Makar Sankranti festival on Monday and paid obeisance to Ram Lalla.

While the Congress top brass has declined an invitation to the January 22 consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, the party's Uttar Pradesh unit stuck to its plan to offer prayers in the holy city on Makar Sankranti.

The Bharatiya Janata Party took a swipe at the Congress leaders, calling them opportunists who can do anything for politics, but the Congress hit back.

"Sankrant is an auspicious occasion and we wanted to have the 'darshan' of Ram Lalla and offer prayers as our ancestors have done. Calling it political is a mistake and sin by the BJP. The truth is that BJP is doing dirty politics in the name of religion," Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said.

Asked about the Congress leaders' visit, Union minister and BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi said, "They are like 'barsati mendak' (rain frogs) They can do anything for politics... they have been doing appeasement politics, but I will say 'better late than never'.

"These people who had called Lord Ram a fictional character are now being awakened... they have started on the right path and they should now also clear their conscience," she said.

After the holy dip in the Saryu River, Rai and other Congress leaders headed for Hanumangarhi and the grand new Ram temple in Ayodhya.

To queries about Congress leaders not coming for Pran Prathistha on January 22, Rai said they have come to the pilgrim centre on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

"Isn't the statue of the deity Ram 'pran prathistit' ...we have come to pay respect to the god on a more auspicious day of Makar Sankranti," Rai told reporters.

Later he said that 'we prayed for peace' in the country.

The visit was announced by Rai before the Congress said that president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party president Sonia Gandhi and leader of the party in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have turned down an invite for the January 22 temple consecration ceremony and accused the BJP of making it into a 'political project' for electoral gains.

Earlier, in the day, Rai accompanied by leader of the Congress legislature party in UP assembly Aradhana Mishra Mona arrived in Ayodhya from the state capital Lucknow by road, state party leader Uma Shankar Pandey, said.

Senior leader Deepender Singh Hooda arrived in Ayodhya separately 'Lord Ram is the symbol of our faith. We believe that Ram belongs to everyone, and Lord Ram is within every person. This is not the first time I have come to Ayodhya. I came here a year ago to offer prayers to Ram Lalla', Hooda said.  -- PTI

In a post on X, Modi said he and Putin also agreed to chalk out a road map for future initiatives.

"Had a good conversation with President Putin. We discussed various positive developments in our Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership and agreed to chalk out a roadmap for future initiatives. We also had a useful exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including Russia's presidency of the BRICS," the prime minister said.

19:04   Declined Ram temple invitation because...: Cong
Ahead of the Ram temple consecration ceremony, the Congress on Monday said it is not an 'atheist party' that it would oppose a temple or religious ritual, but had declined the invite as it is a 'political' event.

The opposition party also alleged that the January 22 event is being held in a hurry because of the Lok Sabha polls.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury last week 'respectfully declined' the invitation to attend the Ram temple consecration ceremony, with the party accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of making it a 'political project' for electoral gains.

Asked about it at a press conference, party leader Kanhaiya Kumar said, "The Congress believes in sarvadharma sambhav (equal respect to all religions)."

"The Congress is not against any religion or religious event or sentiment. It believes in sarvadharma sambhav and this has been the case from the beginning. (Mahatma) Gandhiji also repeatedly stated this," he added.

As far as the invitation to the temple consecration ceremony is concerned, Kumar said someone goes to meet the god when the latter calls him.

"Is it a wedding that an invite is needed? Who are they to invite? When the god calls people, they go. We are bhakts (devotees). God is about personal faith and not a matter of display," he said.

"Everyone knows why are they (BJP-RSS) doing it. Anyone will tell you that this is being done in a hurry because of the election," Kumar alleged.

Hence, the Congress has 'respectfully declined' the invite to the 'political event' of January 22, he said.

"We will go to the temple, why won't we go? You will see that during this (Bharat Jodo Nyay) yatra itself, we will go to many temples. We will go to temples, gurdwaras, churches, mosques. The Congress is not an atheist party that it will oppose a mandir or any religious ritual. It is a party of all religions and people from all religions," Kumar stressed.

Only the Congress can organise the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra because it is a party that belongs to everyone, he said.

The Congress leader said the debate should not be centred around the January 22 temple consecration ceremony as that is a 'political event'.

Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress had said on Friday that the ruling party has made the Ram temple consecration ceremony an 'out-and-out political event', which is being held without taking the advice of shankaracharyas and by disregarding religious procedures.

The opposition party had also said religion is a personal matter and anyone is free to go to Ayodhya for 'darshan', but the invitation that was declined was for the January 22 event, which has been subjected to 'massive politicisation'.   -- PTI

18:05   Shinde-led Sena moves HC against Speaker's decision
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena has moved the Bombay high court challenging the decision taken by the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker to not disqualify 14 MLAs belonging to the rival faction headed by former CM Uddhav Thackeray.

Petitions filed on January 12 by Bharat Gogavale, the chief whip of the ruling Shiv Sena against the 14 MLAs, said they were challenging the 'legality, propriety and correctness' of the January 10 order passed by Speaker Rahul Narwekar dismissing the disqualification petitions submitted by him against the rival camp assembly members.

In the petitions, Gogavale maintained the Thackeray group MLAs not only violated the whip but also voluntarily gave up the membership of the Shiv Sena political party by their acts and omissions following a split in June 2022.

The pleas claimed the Speaker had failed to consider that along with giving up the membership, the (Sena-UBT) members also voted against the Shiv Sena-led government in cahoots with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), thereby seeking to topple the ruling dispensation.

As per the HC's website, Gogavale's petitions would be taken up for hearing on January 22.

While Gogavale moved the HC on January 12, the Thackeray faction on Monday filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Speaker's order declaring the Sena group led by Chief Minister Shinde as the 'real political party' after its split in June 2022.

The Speaker had also rejected the Thackeray faction's plea to disqualify 16 MLAs of the ruling camp, including Shinde.  -- PTI

The Adani group on Monday said it will offer eligible residents of the Dharavi slum clusters new flats measuring 350 sq ft.

The Adani group, which is redeveloping Dharavi slums in collaboration with the Maharashtra government, claimed the flat size was "17 per cent more" than what is offered as part of slum redevelopment projects.

The redeveloped area will also have community halls, recreational areas, public gardens, dispensaries and daycare centres for children.

January 1, 2000, has been decided as the cut-off date to determine eligible residents.

The "ineligible residents" will be provided accommodation under the proposed affordable rental housing policy, as per the state government's norms.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a special purpose vehicle, formed as a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government. The company won the contract to rebuild the largest slum clusters in Asia in November 2022.

16:43   Ram temple consecration to generate Rs 1L-cr biz
Business worth Rs 1 lakh crore is expected to be generated with the consecration ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22, traders' body CAIT said on Monday.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) based its estimate on feedback received from trade associations of 30 cities across different states.

"This event not only resonates with religious sentiments but also brings a surge in economic activities. The faith and trust of people are leading to the creation of many new businesses based on the country's traditional economic system," Praveen Khandelwal, National Secretary General of CAIT, stated.

He said that approximately 30,000 different programmes by trade associations are being organised across the country in view of the Ram temple consecration. These include market processions, Shri Ram Chowki, Shri Ram rallies, Shri Ram Pad Yatra, scooter and car rallies, and Shri Ram assemblies. Markets are witnessing a high demand for Shri Ram flags, banners, caps, t-shirts, and printed 'kurtas' featuring the image of the Ram temple.

"The demand for models of Ram Mandir has also seen a rapid increase, and it is expected that over 5 crore models will be sold across the country for which small manufacturing units are working day-night in many cities of different states," Khandelwal said.

He informed that in the next week, more than 200 major markets in Delhi and a large number of smaller markets will witness Shri Ram flags and decorations. 16:31   Uddhav faction moves SC against Speaker's order
The Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena on Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar's order declaring the Sena bloc led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as the "real political party" after its split in June 2022.

The speaker had also also rejected the Thackeray faction's plea to disqualify 16 MLAs of the ruling camp, including Shinde. In his ruling on the disqualification petitions on January 10, the speaker had not disqualified any MLA from the rival camps.

The ruling further cemented Shinde's position as the chief minister, 18 months after he led a rebellion against Thackeray, and added to his political heft in the ruling coalition which also consists of the BJP and the NCP (Ajit Pawar group) ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in summer and state assembly elections due in the second half of 2024.

Narwekar had said no party leadership can use provisions of the 10th Schedule of the Constitution (anti-defection law) to quell dissent or indiscipline within a party.

The Shinde group had the support of 37 out of the total 54 Sena MLAs when party split in June 2022, the speaker had noted. The Election Commission had given the 'Shiv Sena' name and 'bow and arrow' symbol to the Shinde-led faction in early 2023. PTI

14:31   People asking us why PM has not visited Manipur: Jairam
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who is with Rahul Gandhi in Manipur for 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' said that people are asking us why PM Modi has not visited Manipur.

The second day of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra resumed from Imphal West in Manipur in the early hours of Monday. Jairam Ramesh told ANI that Rahul Gandhi listened to the pain of the people in Manipur.

"People are asking us why PM Modi has not visited Manipur? Everyone wants Rahul Gandhi to raise this issue in parliament and ask the PM to come to Manipur and meet the people. You can see how many people have gathered here. Rahul ji listened to the pain of those who are not able to go to school and colleges and those who are still in relief camps," he said.

He further asserted that everyone in the violence-hit state wants a strong government. "There is no governance here since last 8 months. Two ministers here are working online; they are not even in Manipur. Everyone wants a government--a sensitive government and a strong government. This is also the question that you have the mandate; your party is in power here and in Delhi. You consider yourself a double-engine government; then why are the people in pain?" he added.

12:31   Why I left Congress and joined Sena: Milind Deora
Former Union minister Milind Deora has justified his decision to quit the Congress and join Shiv Sena, alleging that the Grand Old Party has deviated from its ideological and organisational roots, "fostering" caste divisions, and targeting business houses.

Deora also said he aspired to collaborate with a leader who values constructive ideas, and that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has acknowledged his potential.

The former Mumbai South MP on Sunday morning resigned from the primary membership of the Congress, ending his family's "55-year-old association" with the party.

Hours later he joined the Shiv Sena at the official residence of Shinde. Deora later posted a statement on his social media account on X listing reasons for quitting Congress.

Deora, son of Congress veteran late Murli Deora, has been sulking since Congress' ally Shiv Sena (UBT) staked a claim on the Mumbai South parliamentary constituency for the upcoming elections.

Milind Deora was elected to Lok Sabha from Mumbai South in 2004 and 2009. He lost in 2014 and 2019 to Arvind Sawant who contested as a Shiv Sena (undivided) candidate on both occasions.

While admitting that his decision to part ways with Congress is deeply emotional, Deora stated that he aspired to collaborate with a leader who values constructive ideas, acknowledges his credentials and aims to leverage his abilities in Parliament for the progress of the nation and state.

"Eknath Shinde ji believes in my potential and embodies the belief that hard work can achieve the impossible," he stated.

Without taking names, Deora criticised the Congress for its strong criticism of the Adani Group in recent years. "The party that once initiated the country's economic liberalisation now targets business houses as 'anti-national.' It has strayed from celebrating the country's diverse cultures and religions, fostering a division based on caste and creating a North-South divide. It has deviated from its ideological and organisational roots," he said.

Deora further said the Congress has not only failed to come back to power but has also failed to effectively serve as a constructive opposition at the Centre.

He went on to highlight the humble backgrounds of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

"Today, we witness a chaiwala rising to become the Prime Minister of the world's largest democracy and an autorickshaw driver serving as the chief minister of India's second-largest state. This transformation enriches the country's political landscape, affirming our egalitarian values," Deora added. PTI

The flight attendant can be heard shouting out "You can't do this; you can't do this" as the man who caused the commotion heads back to his seat.

09:39   Kar Sevaks who died brought alive on canvas
Saffron volunteers, who lost their lives doing 'Kar Seva' during the Ram Mandir movement in the early 90s are being brought alive on canvas in Karsevakpuram, Ayodhya. Artists from Lucknow are involved in the work and are using oil paint for making paintings.

The work is in its final stages. Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesperson Sharad Sharma said that the Ram Temple Trust is considering installing these paintings in the courtyard of Ram Lalla.

However, a final decision on this is yet to be taken. Apart from the men, who died waging the fight for the Ram Temple since 1949, the paintings will also feature slain Kar Sevaks from 1990 and thereafter.

Karsevakpuram is an area in Ayodhya roughly two kilometres from the Ram Janmabhoomi site where the volunteers had taken refuge during the Ram Mandir movement, in a bid to escape arrest and police firing. At that time, it was a desolate area surrounded by guava trees.

The place was also infested with monkeys back in the day and wasn't patrolled regularly by the police.

Today, the securely gated Karsevakpuram serves as VHP's headquarters in Ayodhya. The complex houses the VHP office, alongside a guest house, a school, a gaushala (cow shelter), and a dining hall named Sita Rasoi.

Ahead of the Pran Pratishta ceremony, Karsevakpuram has been bedecked with decorative items themed on the epic 'Ramayana'.
