Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Jolly said outside Shoma Chaudhury's home, "My head hangs in shame. She (Chaudhury) did not stand up in support of her woman colleague and for the past one week she has been trying to suppress the complaint and facts in the case."

"It was least expected from her to report the matter to police immediately. She should have also asked Tejpal to submit himself to the law of the land. He should have appeared in the police station and have the guts of accepting that he is guilty and submitting to the law. None of this happened," Jolly said.

"I will do this 1000 times", said the BJP leader.

14:22   Shoma: Will address media soon
And in Kanpur, the BJP women's wing has begun protests against Shoma Chaudhary.

If Shoma as attracted scorn for her the way she has handled the Tehelka crisis, this act by the BJP in Delhi, will ensure a huge sympathy wave for her. It must be remembered that she is not an accused in the case.

BJP south Delhi chief, Vijay Jolly, apparently tried to climb on to Shoma Chaudhury's car when she was leaving her home. Clearly his political theatrics, an euphemism for hooliganism, doesn't work with the people.

Shoma did tell the protestors outside her home that she would be addressing the media.

On Twitter:

Mrityunjoy Kumar Jha: Shameful act by Vijay Jolly and his "supporters" at Soma Chaudhary's house..its vandalism

Nilanjana Roy : So if you want justice for one woman, bully another? The BJP & Vijay Jolly's vandalism at Shoma C's house so wrong.

Nandita Saikia: Have no sympathy for what I've seen of Shoma's handling of the sexual assault allegations but nothing legitimises illegal acts against her.

Abhijit Majumder: Digvijaya backs Tejpal, Vijay Jolly defaces Shoma's nameplate. Wonder if politicians are a different species who live disguised as humans
image
14:15
The protests had in fact died down, but the drama reached its peak when Shoma Chaudhury stepped outside her house to get into her car. Even as the police provided security, they did nothing to prevent the protestors, especially Vijay Jolly from defacing the nameplate and throwing ink on the pavement outside her home.

"Tejpal saying politics is behaviour of a desperate man who has been cornered," he added.

On Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury's resignation, Ram said: "She is a well-informed person, she knew the amended law, so there is no excuse for her to not have taken action.

13:01   Tehelkas Achilles heel
Journalists have always been a bit leery of Tarun Tejpal and his methods. An unlikely mix of conscience keeper and entrepreneur, his range of activities surpassed what most of us aspire to. He was more gifted by far than your average self-important editor or hack.

And more innovative in his financing. Wednesday morning's revelations in The Indian Express about his partnership with the controversial liquor baron Ponty Chadha to create a private club in Delhi, which promised 'intimacy' with eminent world shapers, is a good example.

11:10   CCTV footage shows woman adjusting clothes, Tejpal follows: Police
In more trouble for Tehelka's founder-editor Tarun Tejpal, accused of sexually assaulting his junior colleague, the CCTV footage sourced by Goa Police from a starred hotel here has "corroborated" the facts narrated by the woman journalist, a senior officer said today.

The CCTV footage of the area outside the elevator, in which the alleged sexual assault took place, corroborates the victim's narration, said an officer, who is part of the team investigating the footage, on the condition of anonymity.

The woman journalist had accused Tejpal of molesting her on November 7 and 8 during the ThinkFest event organised by the magazine.

The footage could add to the troubles of Tejpal who has been given 3 pm deadline by police to appear before them here. The journalist registered her statement before a magistrate here yesterday.

"It is clear in the CCTV footage, dated November 7, outside the lift in Block 7 of the hotel that something went wrong in the lift," the officer said.

"The footage initially shows Tejpal and the victim woman accompanying Hollywood actor Robert De Nero to the latter's room. This was around 9 pm when Tejpal is seen entering the lift with his hands on the shoulders of the young journalist," the officer said.

He further said, "One-and-half hours later, around 10:30 pm, Tejpal is seen near the same elevator on the ground floor pulling the woman inside".

The officer said the lift was seen opening on the second floor almost after two minutes. "The woman is seen coming out of the elevator adjusting her clothes and running down the steps as Tejpal follows her," the officer added.

10:50   The unravelling of Shoma Chaudhury
Ever since the scandal became public Shoma Chaudhury, a shareholder in Tehelka and associated companies started by Tarun Tejpal, was accused of a cover up and of not taking proper action the case demanded.

Initially, Chaudhury sought to portray it as an internal matter and was more interested in getting an apology from Tejpal to the victim rather than reporting it to police because of the nature of the cognisable offence.

Later, she tried to set up an internal complaints committee with Urvashi Butalia, a friend of Tejpal, as its head.

The committee never took off and Butalia also refused to be part of it.

Meanwhile, a number of editors resigned from the magazine accusing Chaudhury of not doing justice to the victim and being interested only in protecting Tejpal.

09:55   Goa Police's deadline for Tejpal ends at 3 pm

The police may issue a non-bailable warrant against Tejpal if he does not appear before the IO or prolong the questioning till Delhi High Court comes out with its order on his anticipatory bail plea on Friday, experts say.

08:53   Shoma Chaudhury quits Tehelka
Zee News reports: Tehelka's managing editor Shoma Chaudhury resigns from her post.

In an e-mail she sent to her colleagues just before 6 am today, Chaudhury said she didn't want questions raised about her integrity to "tarnish the image of Tehelka".

Saying this had been a "damaging" time for everyone associated with the magazine, the resignation e-mail says: "To my mind, I acted on instant outrage and solidarity for our colleague as a woman and co-worker."

"After the first steps to immediately address her expressed needs, the process of setting up the anti-sexual harassment committee was begun. There were only two days to act on the complaint before the story broke in the press. Post this, things have been misconstrued and have snowballed exponentially in the media, based on half-facts and selective leaks," Chaudhury says.

She further denied allegations of attempting a "cover-up", saying: "While I accept that I could have done many things differently and in a more measured way, I reject the allegations of a cover-up because in no way could the first actions that were taken be deemed suppression of any kind. As for my feminist positions, I believe I acted in consonance with them by giving my colleagues account precedence over everything else."

08:38   B-52s show Guam is strategic point: Delegate
The flight of B-52 bombers from Guam into China's newly declared air defence zone in the East China Sea underscores the island's importance to national security, the territory's delegate to Congress said.

"Our island has again shown that we are a strategic point to defend our nation's interests and the interests of our allies in the Asia-Pacific region," Del Madeleine Bordallo told the Pacific Daily News.

China on Saturday said all aircraft entering the new air defence zone must notify Chinese authorities and are subject to emergency military measures if they do not identify themselves or obey Beijing's orders.

The zone includes a cluster of islands that are controlled by Japan but claimed by Beijing.

The US and Japan have said they don't acknowledge the zone. Taiwan and South Korea, both close to the US, also rejected it.

US officials said the two unarmed B-52 bombers took off around midday Tuesday and were in the zone that encompasses the disputed islands for less than an hour before returning to their base. They said the aircraft encountered no problems.
