In Raipur, Tribal Artists Finding Fewer Spaces for Self-Expression

As rain played hide-and-seek on an overcast September evening, keeping many residents of Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, confined to their homes, a group of about 20 tribal artists from conflict-ridden Bastar assembled in a dormitory in the back of a state-run museum.

Insulated from the outside world, they practiced a range of dance and folk music exclusively devoted to their deities, and unique to their regions and subculture. Read
