21:32   Your biggest secrets are up for grabs

The great irony of the government spying controversy is that even America's state-of-the-art spy agency could not keep secret the fact that it might be spying on our secrets.

"In recent years one in four of America's new small-business owners were immigrants. One in four high-tech startups in America were founded by immigrants. Forty per cent of Fortune 500 companies were started by a first-or second-generation American. Think about that.

Congress today derided efforts to forge a Third Front by leaders like Naveen Patnaik at a time when the Lok Sabha polls are not far away. "Some parties, as part of their politics, are taking out things from their bag.... We will see it later", was the response of party spokesman Raj Babbar.

He was asked as to how the Congress looks at attempts by leaders like the BJD chief to forge a Third Front which is also referred to as the Federal Front by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee.

Patnaik is calling for maintaining equidistance from both the Cong-led UPA and BJP-led NDA. His party is a close ally of the AIADMK led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has also talked of formation of a Third Front.

The Emergency (1975-77) saw VC Shukla at the height of his power, thanks to his closeness with Sanjay Gandhi. He imposed Press censorship with an unnatural zeal, cutting electric supply to presses and monitoring almost every story printed.

15:57   If Advani is Bhishma, who are Duryodhan and Shakuni, asks Digvijaya
Latching on to the Mahabharta analogy used by L K Advani, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh today took potshots at BJP over the turmoil in the party after Narendra Modi's elevation and subsequent resignation of senior leader Advani from key posts.

"If Advani is Bhishma Pitamah, who would be Dhritrashtra, Shakuni, Duryodhan and other characters of BJP Mahabharata," Singh wrote on Twitter. In another tweet, he said, "...BJP certainly has its own "chaal" it's own "charitra" and it's own "chehra". Now guess who is what."

In his blog, Advani had on Sunday made a reference to a wounded Bhishma Pitamah lying on a bed of arrows in a scene in Mahabharata. The reference was made by the sulking BJP veteran, who, citing ill-health, had stayed away from the party executive meet that elevated Modi the same day, anointing him as Chief of BJP's Election Campaign Committee for 2014 general elections.

Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed also took a jibe at Opposition party
leaders for speaking about Advani's virtues after he resigned from key party posts yesterday.

"BJP leaders say Advani is a father figure for us, but in place of son, they are trying to send the hapless father to Banwas. What a shame?" he tweeted.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's appointment on Sunday as BJP's campaign head for 2014 polls remained beyond the scope of re-negotiation a day later as the party's parliamentary board appealed to patriarch LK Advani to withdraw his resignation. There appeared to be no compromise offer or a face saver till late on Monday to Advani -- other than an appeal read out by party chief Rajnath Singh that his services as a guide and mentor were "needed more than ever before'. 12:06   Advani's projection as symbol of secularism surprising: Omar
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed surprise over the projection of L K Advani, who quit all BJP posts yesterday, as a symbol of secularism in NDA by some quarters.

"L K Advani as the NDA's mascot of secularism. Who would have imagined!!!!!!"

Omar, whose National Conference was a constituent of the alliance from 1999-2003, Tweeted.

Although Omar did not specify who he was referring to, the comment seems to be in response to JD-U's stand on reconsidering its ties with the NDA in the wake of elevation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as BJP's poll panel chief for next year's Lok Sabha elections.

Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav had termed Advani's resignation as a "serious issue" and "not good for NDA health." "I am deeply saddened by the resignation of Advaniji. Because the NDA was forged with the efforts of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Advaniji. He (Advani) is also the working president and Atalji is not keeping well," Yadav had said.

JDU national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari had said yesterday that "It is a matter of great concern that Advani, who had built BJP brick by brick is being treated shabbily by his own party leaders who ran roughshod over him and went ahead with their decision to anoint Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the BJP poll campaign panel chief."

11:47   RSS scripted Advani's marginalisation in the BJP
Almost two years ago, the RSS had told L K Advani he'd have to give up his prime ministerial aspirations. He was to play only a mentor role in the party.Advani has been credited with catapulting the BJP from a two-MP party to one with 185 MPs at one point of time, thanks mainly to his "rathayatras". His last such yatra, the Jan Chetana Yatra in October 2011, became a bone of contention within the party. The RSS had felt it was aimed more at projecting himself as PM nominee. 11:43   What surveys don't really tell us about Modi
There's an old saying that "statistics don't lie, but liars use statistics'. This is worth keeping in mind as we digest the plethora of polls that profess to take the pulse of the nation as elections approach. The Indian electorate may yet make fools of all of the pollsters, pundits and prognosticators, writes Vivek Dehejia. Read the piece on Rediff.com.

11:39   Nitin Gadkari, Uma Bharti at Advani's residence
Right now, BJP former president Nitin Gadkari and senior leader Uma Bharti are at LK Advani's residence in Delhi. Almost every senior leader has met Advani since he submitted his resignation yesterday.

Senior party leader Sushma Swaraj has said that there is no crisis and the party will move forward with the blessings of Advani.Sushma Swaraj, who is the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, tweeted late on Monday night that that party was united.

Sushma Swaraj had earlier in the evening taken part in a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board at party president Rajnath Singh's residence here, where the board rejected Advani's resignation.

Advani has resigned from the posts in BJP election committee, and parliamentary board and the party's national executive, a day after the party appointed Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as chief of BJP's campaign committee for 2014 elections.

11:33   No RSS pressure over Advani issue: Rajnath
BJP President Rajnath Singh today denied reports that the party was under pressure from the RSS over the crisis triggered by the resignation of senior leader L K Advani from all party positions.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, he said that news stories which suggested this were baseless.

"I want to make one thing clear that on some channels news has been telecast that RSS has said this or that. I want to make it absolutely clear that Sangh has not said anything.

"I have inquired from people in Sangh, whether they've made a statement. They told me that there has been no statement from their side, all this news is completely baseless," he added.

There had been reports in a section of the media earlier that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had called Rajnath Singh to discuss the issue. Sources said that both the BJP and RSS were of the view that there should be no going back on the decision to appoint Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as head of the election campaign committee.

10:13   BJP hardens stand as Advani refuses to budge
CNN-IBN reports: The Bharatiya Janata Party seems to be hardening its stand on veteran leader L K Advani as attempts to pacify him fail.

The party patriarch now looks completely isolated. BJP President Rajnath Singh is going to Banswara in Rajasthan at the time of such a crisis, sources say, to send out the message that it is business as usual in the BJP.

Among other key leaders, Arun Jaitley is going abroad and Narendra Modi is staying in Gujarat.

Sources in the BJP say Narendra Modi's elevation is ratified by the National Executive and individuals can't change it.

Sources have told CNN-IBN that Rajnath has spoken to the RSS chief and urged him to speak to Advani.

09:18   Sreesanth, Chavan to walk out of prison today
Cricketers S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and 17 others will walk out of jail on Tuesday after the MCOCA court granted them bail on Monday.

The police on Monday failed to satisfy the court and place on record evidence to justify its decision to slap charges under MCOCA for being involved in organised crime syndicate operated by underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel.

The court, while granting bail to the 19 accused in the spot-fixing case, said it is prima facie not satisfied with the allegation that offences punishable under sections 120-B(criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the IPC are made out against the accused at this stage.

It also said it is also not satisfied that "culpability and mens rea (motive)" is made out against the accused.

The judge also said the accused persons are not "habitual offenders" and have clean antecedents and they are not likely to flee from justice.

The court directed the accused to submit their passports before it and asked them not go out of India without its prior permission.

09:05   Jiah Khan case: Suraj Pancholi to be produced in court today
Suraj Pancholi, son of an Bollywood actor couple who was on Monday arrested for allegedly driving his girl friend and Bollywood actress Jiah Khan to suicide, will be produced before a Mumbai court on Tueasday.

Suraj was arrested on the basis of a note left behind by her which mentioned that she was "heartbroken" in her relationship with Suraj and fed up with his "womanising".

"Suraj was booked under IPC section 306 of Indian Penal Code and placed under arrest in connection with Jiah Khan suicide case," Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil said

Suraj (21), son of actor couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.

The six-page note written by the 25-year-old actress who hanged herself at her Juhu residence last Monday, throws light on the rocky relationship between the two. Jiah's mother Rabia Khan has alleged that her daughter suffered "trauma and abuse" at the hands of her lover and his father.

The note, meant for Suraj and discovered three days after Jiah's death, has revealed that the actress was "deeply hurt" as she had to abort her baby with Suraj and was "fed up" with his "womanising".

09:05   Modi is like a son to Advani: Uma Bharti
BJP Vice President Uma Bharti will today meet senior party leader L K Advani who quit from all party posts on Monday.

She said Advani has very good relation with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and he would never get annoyed with the elevation of Gujarat Chief as the Chairman of BJP's Lok Sabha Poll Campaign Committee.

"Modi is like a son to him. It was Advani who had made Modi the Chief Minister of Gujarat and he (Modi) used to manage Advanis constituency all along," Uma told reporters on Advanis decision to resign from all party posts.

"Modi respects Advani a lot and his blessings are always with him (Modi). Their relationship is very good," she said.
Uma, who like Advani, had stayed away from the party's National Executive meet in Goa on the ground of poor health, said that despite being not well, she would be leaving for New Delhi to meet Advani on Tuesday morning.

09:01   Apple revamps look of iPhone, iPad software
Apple is throwing out most of the real-world graphical cues from its iPhone and iPad software, like the casino-green "felt" of its Game Center app, in what it calls the biggest update since the iPhone's launch in 2007.

The new operating system, called iOS 7, strives for a clean, simple, translucent look. Apple is redesigning all its applications and icons to conform to the new look, driven by long-time hardware design head Jony Ive.

Apple demonstrated the new software at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco today. The new design direction was widely expected.

The software strives for a multi-layered look, with translucent panels. On the main screen, the background image moves with the movement of the phone, creating an illusion of depth.

09:01   New wave of Iraq attacks kills 70
A wave of attacks, mostly against Sunni areas of Iraq, killed 70 people in renewed bloodshed that, coupled with widespread political paralysis, has revived fears of all-out sectarian war.

The violence, which left more than 230 people wounded, came after several days of relative calm following symbolic moves by Iraq's political leaders to ease tensions among the country's communities after the UN warned violence was ready to "explode".

But no tangible moves have been agreed to address underlying disputes that have fuelled months of protests among Iraq's Sunni community and, analysts say, given militant groups fuel and room to manoeuvre.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bloodshed, but Sunni militants linked to Al-Qaeda have previously attacked security forces and fellow Sunnis, ostensibly in a bid to provoke retributive violence against Iraq's Shiite community.
