23:44   'Early to say if injured man behind Pune blasts'
The police have started questioning the injured man, who was taken into custody after four low-intensity blasts rocked Pune tonight, reports rediff.com's Vicky Nanjappa.

Police said the injured has been identified as Dayanand Patil. A tailor by profession, Patil was working in store on Pune's JM Road, where the blasts occurred.

Eyewitnesses have claimed that he was allegedly carrying one of the bombs in a packet.

Patil has suffered injuries in his stomach and his questioning has already begun. It would not be right to jump the gun at the moment; it is very early to pinpoint whether he was involved in the blast, said police sources.

21:51   4 NOT 5 blasts in Pune, fifth bomb defused
Police sources have confirmed that there were in all four blasts in all and the fifth bomb has been put out. All the four explosions occurred within a one kilometer radius and the bombs were planted systematically, reports rediff.com's Vicky Nanjappa.

Investigators are yet to give some clarity on the substances that were used for the blasts. On the face of it, it appears that all the bombs were timed in a manner that each would go off within a span of minutes to create maximum panic. However, the intention was not to create major damage as the intensity of the blasts were very low.

The police suspect that all the bombs were connected to a timer device and could have been triggered off with a remote control. However, they would still need more time to give a clearer picture of the attack.

17:59   Badminton matchfixing: India lodges formal protest
Update on that Olympic badminton doubles match. India has lodged a formal protest with the Games organisers to probe if the women's doubles badminton match involving Japan and Chinese Taipei was played in the right spirit, following the elimination of medal hopes Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa.  Jwala and Ashwini missed out on a quarterfinal berth by a difference of just one point, even though they beat Shinta Mulia Sari and Lei Yao of Singapore 21-16 21-15 in their last group B match, after tying with Japan and Taipei on the number of wins.

Prior to India's final group game last night, the World number five Japanese pair of Mizuki Fujii and Reika Kakiiwa had shockingly lost to Chinese Taipei's Cheng Wen Hsing and Chien Yu Chin, ranked 10th, 19-21 11-21.

"It is obvious that both teams wanted to lose. Hopefully some action will be taken. System needs a change because, if players had a choice, it would be fair to say that the Chinese teams would not want to meet in the quarters. Neither would Indonesia or Korea want to play China in quarters," coach Pullela Gopichand said.

17:43   'Overawed paddlers wasted time at opening ceremony'
Indian paddlers were overawed by the enormity of the Olympics, says national coach Bhawani Mukherji, who feels that both Ankita Das and Soumyajit Ghosh should have focussed on their matches rather than wasting crucial time participating in the opening ceremony.

"Olympics is a big stage. All top level Indian athletes are there, some of whom you may not have even met before," Mukherji said.

"Ankita was not looking focussed. She was marching happily alongside flag bearer Sushil Kumar while she had her first match next day. Ideally, she should have skipped the opening ceremony and concentrated on her match. They were certainly overawed by the occasion," he said.

However, the national coach said Soumyajit was the better of the two participants and he just lost to a better opponent in the second round. "Ankita had a chance, she should have come up with a better result. She should have atleast made it to the main draw.

"When have we said no to talks. We had not asked them to go on fast. We have kept our doors open. They have never been closed. They have gone ahead (with the fast) individually and arbitrarily," Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury said.

She described as a "dangerous statement" Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal's remarks warning the government against removing him forcibly from the fasting venue as his health has deteriorated.

"They (Team Anna) are inciting the people," Chowdhury said when asked about Kejriwal's remarks. "I do not want to comment on that. We wish him (Kejriwal) well. He (Kejriwal) should save his energy. What the government will do ... it is our business," Chowdhury said.

14:50   China's brutal training regime produces champs
China and the US tie at 23 medals each, but China leads the medal tally with 13 golds. The reason for their spectacular success at the Olympics is this... China's brutal training factories apparently torture their young talented youngsters to churn them into gold-medal winning champions.

According to the Daily Mirror, the reason behind China's immense success in the Olympic events lies in atrocious training regimes that youngsters are forced to follow back home.

Swimmers, gymnasts, boxers and athletes are all products of the 500 million pounds Mandarin Machine, which is the government programme designed to churn out Olympic gold medallists and ensure China's world domination of sport.

For the past four decades, children as young as six have been tested for size, fitness and skill as part of a national "talent identification strategy'.

With a population of 1.3 billion to choose from, more than 400,000 are selected and sent to 3,000 sports schools, or boot camps, the paper added.

14:12   Shinde on blackout: I'm a minister, not technician
Amid sharp criticism over his elevation as Home Minister on a day the nation faced its worst electricity blackout, the outgoing Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said people should appreciate that electricity supply was restored within hours. "We got electricity in a matter of hours... people should appreciate how work is done at the grid," Shinde told reporters at his residence here.

Dalits usually never get home ministry. Rajiv Gandhi was the first to give the ministry to a Dalit when he made Buta Singh the Home Minister and now the second time it has happened under Sonia Gandhi when Manmohan Singh has given the ministry to me, he said.

He also thanked Sonia Gandhi and the PM for making him, a Dalit, the home minister. Hitting out at the media for blaming him, he said he was a minister and not a technician and was not supposed to know how these things happened.

13:42   Steep 4.5% hike in jet fuel, will air fares rise?
With firming of oil prices in the international market, jet fuel or ATF rates were today hiked by a steep 4.5 per cent, the second increase in a month.

The price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, in Delhi was hiked by Rs 2,797.41 per kilolitre (kl), or 4.5 per cent, to Rs 65,005.59, according to Indian Oil Corp, the nation's largest oil firm.

The hike comes on back of a 1.7 per cent or Rs 1,039.1 per kl hike in rates effected from July 16. The twin increases snapped a six fortnight trend of reduction in rates, including a steep 5 per cent (Rs 3,260 per kl) cut effected from June 16 and about 2 per cent (Rs 1,241 per kl) fall in prices from July 1. Jet fuel, which had hit an all-time high peak of Rs 71,028.26 per kl in August 2008, shortly after international oil rates touched a record USD 147 per barrel, had fallen to eight-month low of Rs 61,169.08 per kl in early July. In Mumbai, jet fuel will cost Rs 65,884.34 per kl from today as against Rs Rs 63,002.45 per kl previously.

Jet fuel constitutes over 40 per cent of an airline's operating costs and the two consecutive increase in prices have wiped away half of the gains the cash-strapped airlines would have made from reductions.

No immediate comments were available from the airlines on the impact of the price hike on passenger fares. The three fuel retailers -- IOC, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum -- revise jet fuel prices on the 1st and 16th of every month, based on the average international price in the preceding fortnight.

Hotmail was launched in 1996 by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith and acquired by Microsoft in 1997 for an estimated $400 million. The re-branding and overhaul of Microsoft's email service is Microsoft's first major change in its email service in eight years.

The BSE benchmark Sensex declined by nearly 36 points in early trade on Wednesday, snapping three-session rising streak, as participants booked profits after recent gains amid a weak trend overseas.

The 30-share barometer, which had gained over 598 points in the last three sessions, fell by 35.91 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 17,200.27.

09:33   Team Anna's health a concern as fast enters day 4
As Anna Hazares indefinite fast entered the fourth day on Wednesday, 400 of his supporters including Team member Arvind Kejriwal, who've been fasting for a week have warned against being forcibly hospitalised even as their health deteriorates.

The tough postering of Hazare, who threatened to return the Padma Bhushan bestowed on him, came on a day when his close aides Arvind Kejriwal and Gopal Rai, whose fast entered the seventh day, were advised hospitalisation by doctors but they rejected it saying they were "not cowards who will give up because of health concerns".

09:13   Cabinet reshuffle pathetic, says BJP
BJP has described the minor Cabinet reshuffle as 'pathetic' and questioned the credibility and competence of new Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

"This change is pathetic. It is a clear case of talent deficit. P Chidambaram's role has been questionable as the Finance Minister. There are allegations against his family," BJP's chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, adding that the UPA lacks the commitment for change.

Alleging that "good governance" is not on the agenda of the Congress-led UPA, Prasad took a dig at Shinde saying that it is ironical that the former Union Power Minister has been moved to Home Ministry on a day when grid failures were reported in the country.

09:12   Gujarat, Himachal polls likely in Nov: report
Economic Times reports: The coming round of assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh may be scheduled in November, unlike in 2007, when the polling had stretched until December 19.

The Election Commission is favourably inclined to demands of all political parties in Himachal Pradesh for a single-day polling in the first half of November, according to a Nirvachan Sadan source.

Given the EC's norm of clubbing closely-timed assembly polls in two or more states, it is now a foregone conclusion that Gujarat polls too will be advanced to November. The Gujarat polls were held in two phases, on December 11 and 16, in 2007. The EC source indicated that the polling in Gujarat this time may be held in the second half of November itself, possibly anytime after Diwali, which falls on November 13.
