22:59   Japan earthquake: Powerful new tremor in Kumamoto
A powerful earthquake has struck near the southern Japanese city of Kumamoto, a day after a tremor there killed at least nine people.

The magnitude-7.1 quake at a depth of 10km (6 miles) hit at 01:25 on Saturday (9.55 IST on Friday).

Another report says a second quake hit later.

A tsunami warning has been issued, with waves of up to 1m (3ft) possible.
Japan is regularly hit by earthquakes but stringent building codes mean that they rarely cause significant damage.

Thursday's magnitude-6.2 quake caused shaking at some places as intense as the huge earthquake that hit the country in 2011, Japan's seismology office said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has authorized a criminal investigation into whether comedian Jan Bhmermann broke the law when he read a satirical poem about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on German television.

Erdogan has complained that the poem was a smear -- and one that violated an obscure German law against insulting representatives of foreign countries.

Whether the comedian will be charged will be decided by a prosecutor. But under this law, no prosecution could have even been considered without the approval of the government.

In a news conference, Merkel acknowledged there had been differences of opinion within her coalition government.

19:20   Solution to world's problems in Lord Mahavir's principles: Swaraj
Noting that terrorism, climate change and inequality are the key challenges facing the world, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today hailed Lord Mahavir Jain's principles of "ahimsa, anekant and aparigriha"

"There are three key challenges before us. Terrorism, climate change and inequality. And it is a coincidence that, if we identify, three things (principles) come to fore in Mahavir Darshan, ahimsa (non-violence), anekant (unity in diversity) and aparigriha (renunciation). If we look for
solutions to these problems, then those are lying in these principles," Swaraj said.

12:11   NASA's Saturn probe detects interstellar dust
NASA's Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn has for the first time detected and analysed dust coming from beyond our solar system.
Cassini has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004, studying the giant planet, its rings and its moons. The spacecraft has also sampled millions of ice-rich dust grains with its cosmic dust analyser instrument.
The vast majority of the sampled grains originate from active jets that spray from the surface of Saturn's geologically active moon Enceladus, NASA said.

But among the myriad microscopic grains collected by Cassini, a special few - just 36 grains - stand out from the crowd. Scientists conclude these specks of material came from interstellar space - the space between the stars.

Alien dust in the solar system is not unanticipated. In the 1990s, the ESA/NASA Ulysses mission made the first in-situ observations of this material, which were later confirmed by NASA's Galileo spacecraft.
The dust was traced back to the local interstellar cloud: a nearly empty bubble of gas and dust that our solar system is travelling through with a distinct direction and speed.

11:48   North Korea missile launch failed
North Korea attempted to fire a missile from its eastern coast Friday, but the launch ended in failure, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The statement from South Korea's military did not specify what sort of missile was part of the test. The attempt involved an intermediate-range Musudan missile, according to South Korean media reports.

The launch effort came on the birthday of Kim Il Sung, the founder of North Korea on the holiday, known as "Day of the Sun."

"If the reports are true, and this mobile missile launch attempt did fail, it would be a major disappointment for the North Korean regime because it is happening on the most significant holiday of the year," said CNN's Will Ripley from Pyongyang.

No official announcement had been made about the test within the country, Ripley said. Based on past failures, it was unlikely one would ever be made.

"We will not walk away. Our form of participation may vary, depending on the commitments of Greece and the undertaking of the European partners. But we will not walk away," she said.

Greece needs more financial support and relief to avoid failing again to meet its debt obligations under its third financial rescue program this decade.

03:35   Obama will visit UK to appeal against Brexit
United States President Barack Obama will head to London next week to join the international chorus of leaders imploring Britain not to leave the European Union.

The White House said on Thursday that the president will arrive in Britain on April 21 for a three-day visit, just two months before the country votes in an referendum on the issue.

"He will make very clear that this is decision for the people of the United Kingdom to make," Obama's close foreign policy adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters.

"But we have no closer friend in the world and if we are asked our view as a friend, we'll offer it." Rhodes said Obama would be 'very straightforward and candid as a friend as to why the US believes that it is good for the UK to remain in the EU'.

Opinion polls suggest the June 23 vote will be a close one, but large numbers of voters remain undecided and Britain's allies are keen for Europe's second largest economy to stay in the bloc.

Aside from meeting British officials, Obama will have lunch with Queen Elizabeth II on April 22, one day after the long-serving monarch's 90th birthday.

He will also stage a joint news conference with Prime Minister David Cameron, who is campaigning for a vote to remain in Europe despite broad support for 'Brexit' within his Conservative Party.
