Amid frequent face offs between the government and opposition, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said political discourse in the country has become "more vulgar".

"Though extremely popular to say, the anti-corruption law must be made more and more stringent and more and more unreasonable. That is the more popular way these days in politics, particularly when political discourse also tends to become more vulgar," Jaitley, who is under fierce opposition attack over alleged irregularities in Delhi's cricket body, said.

Jaitley's comments came amidst the ongoing tussle between the Arvind Kejriwal government and the Centre over alleged corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association where he was the president for about 13 years till 2013.

20:12   Delhi records its most polluted day of the year
It was the most polluted day of the year in Delhi today with the authorities recording the highest levels of suspended particulate matters PM 2.5 and PM 10, taking the air quality into the 'severe' category across the city.

Although a definite conclusion could not be reached immediately, the experts attribute the spike to "open biomass burning", mainly burning of dry leaves to fight cold, across the region for the "extraordinary rise" in the levels of the particulate matters.

The air quality across Delhi had plunged into 'severe' level post Diwali, but pollutants had shown a steady fall earlier this month.

18:39   Why BJP cracked the whip on Azad
Azad had held a press conference on Sunday despite being warned by Amit Shah against it. He then dared Jaitley, tweeting, ""Hello dear Jaitleyji, are you filing defamation case against me? Please do file."

Arun Jaitley maintained a studied silence on Azad, but the next day, on Monday, filed a Rs 10 crore defamation suit against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and five other AAP leaders.

Azad then tweeted, "Mera naam kyon hata diya @arunjaitley #Aap ne toh mere letters dikhae theey, mujhpar karo na case, registered post se maine bheje theey."

Jaitley has received support from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who defended his second in command saying: "No one has any doubt about his honesty and integrity. The allegations against him are baseless."

At the press conference on Sunday, where Azad spoke about alleged irregularities in the DDCA, he repeatedly said there was no personal fight in his 'principled campaign' but played footage of a DDCA AGM of 2011-12, which purportedly showed him questioning Jaitley, who was in the chair.

Asked repeatedly as to why he was not taking the name of Jaitley and what his allegations against him were, Azad said there was no personal or political fight. It is a matter of principles and we have been fighting this battle for the last nine years, he said.

And finally, the BJP suspends Kirti Azad. BJP president Amit Shah suspended the BJP MP today. Azad was suspended for targeting finance minister Arun Jaitley over the DDCA issue.

The former cricketer and BJP MP has tweeted several times against Jaitley and even brought up the DDCA issue in the Lok Sabha.

Azad has underlined that he was not targeting any individual and that he had nothing to do with the attacks on Jaitley by the AAP, which he said "was born the other day" and was only echoing what he had been saying for eight long years.

He alleged that the DDCA gave contracts to fake companies, paying them crores of rupees in cash and had fudged the audit of accounts. He played a video produced by WikiLeaks4India which claimed that some of the companies favoured by the DDCA had given fictitious addresses.

17:46   Hockey India chief rubbishes Gill's allegations against Jaitley
Hockey India President Narinder Batra today rebutted KPS Gill's allegations that Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has a "conflict of interest" in the national hockey body, saying it was just a "creation" by the banned IHF chief to settle scores with him.

Batra admitted that Jaitley's daughter Sonali fought one of the the many cases for HI for a very brief period but just as a professional and it was unfair to attach any motives.

Gill today dragged the Union Finance Minister into the affairs of HI, urging the Delhi government to probe into the BJP stalwart's "conflict of interest" in the national hockey body.

Former top cop, Gill has written to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that Jaitley had appointed his daughter Sonali as the counsel for Hockey India when he was a member of the advisory board of Hockey India League. 16:31   Four bills passed in two days, disruptions for 23 days
The concluding day of the Parliament's winter session saw a certain amount of bonhomie among MPs across parties, missing during the combative and aggressive session.  At the Central Hall, Congress MPs came up to BJP MPs and greeted them, but few of the BJP MPs also heckled the opposition for disruptions.

For the entire session, the Congress ensured that parliament proceedings were disrupted, but on the last day, they were cordial, even enthusiastic in getting pending bills passed -- four bills were passed in 23 minutes! In fact that is precisely what the heckling was about.

Hamid Ansari, the Rajya Sabha chairperson, slammed the opposition saying disruptions resulted in a delay of governance. Whether the grand old party realises it and acts on it will be seen during the Budget session in March. Watch this space.

15:34   Raise slogans against corruption, not PM, Sonia tells Cong MPs
As the parliament's winter session closes sine die, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who has led the party in aggressive attacks on the government in the house, today requested protesting MPs from her party not to raise slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi while he was present in the Lok Sabha.

On the last day of the winter session, Congress lawmaker Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was in the Well or Centre of the House, when he began to shout a slogan against PM Modi. Sonia, seated in the front of the opposition benches as usual, stopped the lawmaker and told him that while he must raise slogans against corruption, he should not name the PM.

No slogan was raised thereafter against PM Modi while he was in the house. He left for a two-day visit to Russia this afternoon.

Both PM Modi and Gandhi are members of the Lok Sabha, where the BJP-led government has a commanding majority. The Congress has only 45 Lok Sabha MPs, most of whom spent a better part of the winter session in the Well of the House protesting against PM Modi and his government.

15:06   Rajya Sabha stalls over VHP move to transport stones for Ayodhya temple
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned briefly this morning after chaos over the Ram Temple issue in Ayodhya.

Opposition members entered the well of the House over the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's move to collect engraved stones for construction of the temple and transporting them to the temple town in Uttar Pradesh.

Janata Dal (United) MP KC Tyagi raised the issue shortly after the House met on Wednesday. He said the move was aimed at creating a communally charged atmosphere in the state ahead of the elections. Assembly elections are due in the North Indian state in early 2017.

Members entered the well of the house to protest the VHP's action, shouting "stop manufacturing riots in UP."Outside Parliament, BSP chief Mayawati asked the BJP to "restrain its people." The Ram Temple, she said, "has always been on the agenda of the BJP,  RSS and others."

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi intervened on behalf of the government to say that stone carving for construction of the temple has been going at a site 1.5 km away from the disputed site since 1990. The government and the BJP are of the view that the court decision on the dispute should be accepted, he said.

"Please wait for court decision. All of us should respect it," the minister added. Two truckloads of engraved stones from Rajasthan and Gujarat had reportedly arrived in Ayodhya on Monday.

"Now, the time has come for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Lots of stones arrived today in Ayodhya and their arrival will continue. We have signals from Modi government that Mandir (temple) construction would be done now," religious leader Mahant Nritya Gopal Das said, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

The VHP had given a call in June for collecting stones for construction of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya. "In the national executive meet of the BJP, a promise was made to build Ram temple on the lines of Gujarat's Somnath temple by passing a law in parliament. 14:05   BSF plane crash: Why does a soldier's family cry everytime?' Relative asks Rajnath
As Home Minister Rajnath Singh arrived at Delhi's Safdarjung Airport to pay homage to the 10 BSF personnel who died in a plane crash on Tuesday, a mourning relative confronted him with tough questions.

"Sir, why does a soldier's family have to cry every time?" said the young woman, almost incoherent in her grief. She had to be held back as she aimed a stream of questions at the silent home minister, who was seen wiping his eye at one point.

Nine BSF and one Sashastra Seema Bal personnel were killed when the B 200 Super King crashed through the boundary wall of the Delhi airport.

"Why sir? Why wasn't it a VIP plane? Why were they given such an old plane? It was an old aircraft. This is not right. Sir, please answer me. No, I want an answer right now," she wept.

The 22-year-old Beechcraft crashed moments after it took off for Ranchi at around 9.45 am on Tuesday. Reports suggest that the pilot had noticed a technical snag after starting the engine but was told to continue with the flight.

The pilot, Deputy Commandant Bhagwati Prasad Bhatt of the BSF, diverted the aircraft from populated areas to prevent any civilian deaths.

Sooraj Pancholi says he would prefer to stay mum on the alleged suicide case of his ex-girlfriend Jiah Khan, even as CBI has in its chargesheet accused the actor of driving her to commit suicide.

The Central Bureau of Investigation filed the chargesheet on December 9, citing that Sooraj made false promises to Jiah, who allegedly committed suicide in 2013.

"Highs and lows are part of life. God is great. The case is still in court. 10 people have 10 different things to say about it. I will talk once the case is cleared. I don't want to make a 'khichdi' (mess) out of it," the actor told reporters at the red carpet of 11th Guild Awards.

The 25-year-old actor was launched in Bollywood this year by Salman Khan in "Hero". When asked if he has the superstar's support in the case, Sooraj said, "Salman has got nothing to do with it. Like every family, my family is supporting me and I am supporting my family."

13:26   KPS Gill says Jaitley got daughter appointed as Hockey India lawyer
Former top cop KPS Gill has sent a complaint to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

India Today reports that the former top cop has alleged that Jaitley got his daughter Sonali as the counsel of Hockey India when he was member in the advisory body and had facilitated huge amounts as her fee.

Jaitley has sued six people including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for Rs 10 crore in a defamation suit for their comments that the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) had seen corruption when it was under his watch.

The suit did not include BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad who has been at the forefront alleging corruption in the DDCA under Jaitley's watch.

On December 20, Azad had also released a 28-minute sting video accusing the DDCA of massive financial irregularities under Arun Jaitley. He claimed that a 'Wikileaks4India' investigation has revealed that DDCA awarded contracts to fictitious companies and alleged that 14 companies, which got DDCA contracts, were registered under fake addresses.

The video released had footage of a DDCA annual general meeting of 2011-12 that purportedly showed Azad questioning Arun Jaitley, the then DDCA chief, and shows Jaitley defending DDCA office-bearers who were being questioned by Azad.

Azad alleged that DDCA inflated prices of items and services it procured. He also said DDCA did not float tenders before awarding contracts and demanded an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

12:35   Chintan plotted Hema's murder to get rid of court cases: Cops
Chintan Upadhayay, the estranged husband of artist Hema Upadhyay, plotted the murder of his wife as he apparently wanted to get rid of the court cases that he was fighting with her, police said today. Chintan, also an artist and a "prime suspect" in the case ever since the twin murders of Hema (43) and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani (65) came to light on December 12, was arrested yesterday and sent in police custody till January 1.

"He was being questioned for last ten days. He was arrested yesterday after we collected evidences against him," a senior police official said.

According to police, Chintan was fed up of the court cases he was fighting with Hema and plotted to kill her apparently to get rid of them.

It was Chintan's plan to call Hema to Vidyadhar Rajbhar's warehouse in suburban Kandivali, where she and her lawyers were murdered, the official said.

Vidyadhar, who is still at large, had arranged one of his employees to call Hema, pretending to be Jaipur-based domestic help of Chintan, about some evidence that would help her in the divorce case, he said.

The first call was made from Jaipur in November. Both Chintan and Vidyadhar were there in connection with an art festival, he said. Hema had asked the caller to come to Dadar to examine the evidence, but Vidyadhar made the artist to come to his warehouse in Kandivali, claiming that his domestic help did not find Dadar safe.

Hema agreed to come to he warehouse with her lawyer Harish Bhambhani. The accused allegedly killed both of them as they did not want to leave any evidence, police said.

Police said Chintan and others planned the murder about two months back. They had allegedly met at an unknown place and discussed about money to be paid for executing the murder. There are chances that some amount was paid in advance, the police officer said, adding that there could be another brain behind the conspiracy.

Hema, a Baroda-born installation artist, was locked in bitter divorce proceedings with Chintan. She had in 2013 filed a case against him alleging that he painted obscene pictures of women on the walls of their matrimonial home in Mumbai to harass her. Bhambhani had represented Hema in this case.

12:18   Kirti Azad is a hero, don't take action, BJP rebel Shatrughan Sinha tweets
Continuing his tirade against the party leadership, BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha fired a fresh salvo on the ongoing controversy surrounding finance minister Arun Jaitley and MP Kirti Azad.

Sinha tweeted: "Kirti Azad is hero. Have often quoted Newtons 3rd Law. Feel that untimely action cud boomerang. Sadly-Party with a Difference has become Party with Differences. I request friends not to take action against #KirtiAzad. As for FM, issue shud be fought politically not legally. As advised by our dashing dynamic PM, our FM cud follow Advanijis eg & come clean."

BJP leaders have been building a case of disciplinary action against Azad on the grounds of hobnobbing with opposition.

Senior Bihar BJP leader Sushil Modi charged the Darbhanga MP yesterday for "playing in the hands of opposition" and demanded "disciplinary action" against Azad.

To substantiate the ground of hobnobbing with opposition, several other BJP leaders also claimed and stressed that Kirti Azad had embarrassed the party in Lok Sabha on Monday at the nudge of opposition leader Sonia Gandhi by countering Arun Jaitley's clarification over DDCA controversy on the floor of the House.

Sinha, for his part, has been feeling left out and has been sulking after he was sidelined in the Bihar Assembly election campaign.

11:36   AAP's 'Sack Jaitley' protests erupt outside fin min's home
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday escalated protests against Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley demanding his resignation over the alleged irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). The protests are being led by AAP leader Somnath Bharti.

The protest march to Jaitley's residence was stopped by the police at Tughlaq Road. The protestors were seen holding placards and shouting slogans demanding Jaitley's resignation. Water cannons were aimed at the protestors.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal talked about ushering in politics of no corruption, and yet he kept a corrupt man close.

"Instead of answering on that, Kejriwal went on a counter attack of abusive language. DDCA has already been investigated, nothing was found. Yet Kejriwal abused not only Jaitley ji but his entire family," he said. Earlier, Jaitley had filed a criminal defamation complaint against Arvind Kejriwal and five other leaders of AAP for allegedly defaming him in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) controversy before a Delhi court, which took cognizance on his plea.

Jaitley's action comes in the backdrop of attacks on him by Kejriwal and other AAP leaders over alleged irregularities and financial bunglings in Delhi's cricket body, DDCA, of which he was the president for about 13 years till 2013.

10:12   Jaitley must follow Advani and resign: Tewari
The Congress on Wednesday stepped up its demand for the resignation of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, saying he must follow his 'erstwhile client' and Bharatiya Janata Party veteran leader L K Advani.

Congress leader Manish Tewari asserted that Jaitley should resign from his post for a fair probe into the allegations of financial irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Association.

"Advani had resigned in the wake of the Hawala scam and it's only after Advani was cleared by the courts and Jaitley incidentally was his lawyer in that matter that Advani came back to the Parliament. So, since the prime minister has drawn that analogy, it would be an appropriate thing for Jaitley to follow his erstwhile client, resign from the government, clear his name and then if he is cleared, come back to the government," Tewari told ANI.

07:18   Lalu slams bullet train project; asks Modi to explain rationale
Amid the Centre's thrust on the ambitious bullet train project, RJD chief Lalu Prasad today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain the rationale behind pursuing an initiative that would cost close to Rs 1 lakh crore in a poor country like India.

"The PM should explain the rationale behind investing approximately Rs 1 lakh crore in a single project like bullet train in a nation where millions of people die due to poverty, illness and malnutrition and defecate in open," he asked in a two-page open letter.

Strongly disapproving of the project, former rail minister Prasad charged that farmers and the poor were being ignored at the cost of the bullet train project as the Centre had reduced budgetary allocations for major sectors like agriculture, health and education.

"What percentage of India's population will benefit from this costly project running for such a small distance?" the RJD supremo asked, adding that the Centre's priorities appeared to be misdirected and amounted to an advocacy of lopsided development.

Russia will start constructing two nuclear reactors in Iran next week, the spokesman for the Iranian atomic agency said today.

A series of agreements signed between the two countries last year foresees eventually increasing the total number of Russian-built reactors in the country to nine.

The start of construction follows a historic deal between Iran and world powers in July that ends a decade-long standoff over Tehran's nuclear programme.

The accord does not limit Iran's development of civilian nuclear sites.
