23:51   PM Modi speaks at UN Climate Change Conference
Prime Minister Modi spoke at the UN climate change conference is

"Over the next few days we will decide the fate of this planet," PM Modi said.

"We need a genuine global partnership. Democratic India must grow rapidly to meet energy needs of everyone," he added.

"We hope advanced nations will assume ambitious targets and pursue them sincerely. Developed countries must fulfil responsibilities to make clean energy available to everyone over the world. They must do this in credible and transparent manner," he said echoing an earlier speech he made directed at the developed nations.

"India is guided by our ancient belief that people & planet are inseparable; that human well being and Nature are indivisible," the PM said.

"By 2030 we will reduce emissions by 35% of 2005 levels, & 40% of our installed capacity will be from non fossil fuels," the PM promised.

"Will achieve it by expanding renewable energy, for eg. by adding 175 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2022," he added.

"We are reducing dependence on fossil fuels through levies & reduction in subsidies, switching sources where possible," he stated.

"We look to the developed countries to mobilize 100 billion US Dollars annually by 2020 for mitigation and adaptation. We will succeed if we have the wisdom to craft a collective partnership that balances responsibilities & capabilities," the PM said.

23:31   Boko Haram raids in Nigeria, Niger kill eight
Boko Haram fighters killed eight people at the weekend in northeast Nigeria and southeastern Niger, in deadly raids that saw houses burnt and
villagers kidnapped.
The attacks in Bam-Buratai, in Nigeria's Borno state, and in the Diffa region of Niger, happened on Saturday while there was another raid in Gulak, in Nigeria's Adamawa on Sunday.

Boko Haram hit-and-run raids -- once a trademark of the Islamic State group affiliate -- have declined in recent months in the face of a sustained Nigerian army counter-offensive in rural areas.
Instead, the group has increasingly favoured suicide and bomb attacks against civilians in towns and cities to secure maximum casualties and publicity.

Nigerian army spokesman Colonel Sani Usman confirmed the attack in Bam-Buratai, which residents who fled said started when the gunmen arrived on bicycles and on foot at about 11:00 pm.

23:21   Naturalist David Attenborough says Sun can save Earth
Filmmaker David Attenborough, whose soothing voice narrated the vicarious journey of millions of TV viewers through the wonders of the
natural world, called at a climate summit today for scientific
investment in "saving the world".

Governments with science research budgets should be spending their cash on finding new ways to gather, store and distribute energy from sources like the Sun, wind and waves, he said on the sidelines of a UN conference tasked with clinching a climate rescue pact.
"The essence of the thing is that it should be cheap," the acclaimed documentary-maker told AFP.

"Goodness me... if we could catch one five-thousandth part of the energy that the Sun sprays onto the Moon, onto this globe every day, we would supply all the energy requirements of humanity.
"So how inefficient are we that we can't get that much?"

Attenborough is one of the public faces of an initiative dubbed the Global Apollo Programme, which seeks to make renewable energy cheaper than coal within 10 years.

Supporters of the scheme include Lord Nicholas Stern -- author of a landmark 2006 report on the economics of climate change -- and Lord Martin Rees, a leading astronomy and former head of the Royal Society, Britain's prestigious academy of science.

"Since ancient times different civilizations have given a special place to Sun," Prime Minister Modi said.

"President Hollande responded with immediate support to my long cherished dream of International Solar Alliance," he added.

"In India, Sun is the source of all forms of energy. As Rig Veda says, Sun God is the Soul of all beings, moving & non-moving. This day is the sunrise for new hope, not just for clean energy but for villages who do not get energy," he said.

"A vast majority of humanity is blessed with generous sunlight around year, but many are without a source of power," the PM said.

"This is why alliance is so important; we want to bring solar energy to everyone making it cheaper, reliable & easier to connect to grid," he stated.

21:52   PM Narendra Modi speaks at 'Mission Innovation' at COP21
Speaking at the 'Mission Innovation' at COP21, Prime Minister Modi said, "Innovation must be backed by means to make it accessible to all."

"Access to renewable energy and a better life is a universal aspiration, so are a clean environment and a clean habitat," the prime minister stated.

"A vast section of humanity lives at the edge of poverty, they need energy to light up their homes," he said.

Speaking about climate justice, the prime minister said, "Have to ensure in spirit of climate justice that life of few doesn't cloud opportunities for those on initial steps of development ladder."

"Advanced countries must leave enough room for developing countries to grow," he said.

"We will restore the balance between ecology and economy, and between our inheritance and obligation to the future," he added.

21:44   France arrests two men 'who tried to join IS in Libya'
Two French men arrested attempting to join Islamic State fighters in Libya via neighbouring Tunisia are now being held in Paris.
The suspects, aged 19 and 20, who told authorities they were on their way to a training camp so they could fight in Syria, were arrested in southern Tunisia and flown to France on November 13, the day of the Paris attacks, a judicial source told AFP today.
It is the first time French citizens have been held trying to join jihadists in Libya, where an IS affiliate group holds the city of Sirte, the hometown of the country's deposed leader Moamer Kadhafi.
The two men, one from Lyon and the other from the southern port of Marseille, did not know each other before meeting up in Tunisia, a source said.

The 20-year-old girlfriend of one of the men, a convert to Islam who authorities said had at one stage intended to join her partner in Libya, has also been charged with terrorist offences.

21:06   'Virtual trees' turn the Eiffel Tower green for COP21
The Eiffel Tower turned green for the opening of the Paris climate conference, marking the launch of an art project that will see "virtual trees" grow on the landmark to support reforestation.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard attended the launch of the week-long "1 Heart 1 Tree" project, which allows smartphone users to "plant a tree" on the tower.
"Everyone will be able to plant a virtual tree on the Eiffel Tower, which will grow to the beat of their heart, and then every virtual tree will be really planted in a reforestation programme," said Naziha Mestauoi, the digital artist behind the concept.
Users can download a smartphone application which records their heartbeat via a sensor and then projects this along with the image of a tree, their name and a short message onto the landmark, using lighting and mapping technologies.

Participants will be able to track the growth of their real-life trees, which will be planted in areas of Australia, Brasil, Senegal, India, France, Peru and Ivory Coast from 2016.

19:42   BlackBerry to exit Pakistan over govt's restrictions row
BlackBerry today announced that it will stop operating in Pakistan by the end of next month due to restrictions imposed on its services by the government which has been demanding access to the user data of the Canadian smartphone maker.

Chief Operating Officer Marty Beard in a statement had earlier said that the company will stop its services in Pakistan from today, but later it delayed its exit from the country until December 30 as negotiations continued over the government's demands for access to users' private data.

Beard said the company has decided to exit the market because "remaining in Pakistan would have meant forfeiting our commitment to protect our users' privacy".

Citing "security reasons", telecommunication watchdog Pakistan Telecommunications Authority in July demanded BlackBerry give it access to its BlackBerry Enterprise Services, which encrypt data such as emails and instant messages, or shut it down by November 30.

18:53   Kumari Selja breaks down in Parl: I'm targetted for being a Dalit
The intolerance debate is still on in the Rajya Sabha. Congress MP Kumari Selja breaks down in Parliament saying she was discriminated against in Gujarat when she was a minister because she is a Dalit. She said she was not allowed to enter a temple in Gujarat. Selja was the union tourism minister in the UPA government.

Both houses of Parliament are hearing a debate on 'increasing incidences of intolerance' in the country. This morning, a comment attributed to Home Minister Rajnath Singh by Left parliamentarian Mohd Salim forced repeated adjournments in the Lok Sabha. Rajnath Singh strongly denied ever saying that India had the "first Hindu ruler after 800 years" after Narendra Modi came to power at the head of a BJP government last year.  Salim, initiating the debate on "intolerance" in the Lok Sabha, had said: "How did fringe elements get the courage? I want to question the home minister. When Modi came to power, Rajnath Singh said "800 saal baad koi hindu phir se is desh ka shaasak bana hai (After 800 years, this country has a Hindu ruler once again.) Is this democracy? Is this secularism? Is it a part of the Constitution?"

18:12   Climate change not of our making, says PM at Paris meet
PM Narendra Modi begins his speech at the inauguration of India Pavilion at the Climate Conference in Paris. Highlights...

"This pavilion is a window to our heritage and our progress. Climate change is a major global challenge. But it is not of our making. It is the result of global warming that came from an industrial age powered by fossil fuel.

"We want a comprehensive, equitable and durable agreement in Paris. I speak not just to the world, but our own people. India must lead in combating climate change. India's progress is our destiny and right of our people."

The PM outlines the changes taking place in India as it adapts: "By 2030, 40% of our installed capacity will be based on non-fossil fuel. Yet, we face its consequences today, and that is why the outcome in Paris is so important and we are here today. We want the world to work with urgency."

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi in the Lok Sabha on the intolerance debate: "Why does Award Wapsi brigade not see 84 riots, Nellie massacre, riots in Hashimpura, Muzaffarnagar?"

A debate in Parliament today on 'rising intolerance' was waylaid by a controversial comment attributed to Home Minister Rajnath Singh by Left parliamentarian Mohd Salim. For the first time since the Winter Session began last Thursday, uproar forced repeated adjournments in the Lok Sabha. 14:54   Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan detained for leading march to Delhi assembly
Expelled Aam Aadmi Party members Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav have been detained by Delhi Police for leading a march to the state assembly.

The duo were leading the volunteers of Swaraj Abhiyan, rebel group floated by ex-members of AAP. Yadav and Bhushan were protesting against the Jan Lokpal bill which is scheduled to be tabled in the legislative assembly today.

Both, Bhushan and Yadav were dismissed from the party earlier in the year for raising their voice against the autocratic style of leadership of Kejriwal. According to Bhushan, the bill prepared by the AAP government is altered and drastically different than the one proposed during the 49-day tenure of erstwhile Kejriwal government.

Prashant Bhushan has accused Kejriwal of diluting the purpose of Lokpal by ensuring that the ombudsman elected would be a political appointee. The 4-member committee which will select the Lokpal will comprise the Delhi Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition, Speaker of Assembly, apart from a High Court judge. On the contrary, the previous bill suggested a five-member committee, out of which only 2 members would be political personalities.

14:40   SC asks Govinda to apologise to fan he slapped in 2008
Seven years on, the Supreme Court has asked actor Govinda to apologise to a man for slapping him.

While on the sets of his film Money Hai Toh Honey Hai in 2008, Govina had allegedly slapped a fan called Santosh Raj, who had come to watch the shooting.

Govinda, while defending himself, had said that the fan tried to get too close to the female dancers and actors on the sets and also tried to misbehave with some of them.

Raj moved the Supreme Court in 2014 alleging that the actor humiliated him in front of the public. He also claimed he had spent Rs 5 to 6 lakh on lawyers' fees. He said that since the actor did not call him and apologise, he was more determined to fight a case against him.

14:21   Modi tells rich nations of their duty to lead climate change fight
In a blunt warning to rich nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today told developed countries which powered their way to prosperity on fossil fuels that it would be "morally wrong" if they shift the burden of reducing emissions on developing countries like India.

"The principle of common but differentiated responsibilities should be the bedrock of our collective enterprise. Anything else would be morally wrong," he wrote in the Opinion section of today's 'Financial Times'.

He asked the developed nations to fulfill their duty to shoulder the greater burden of the fight against climate change.

In the article in the UK's leading financial daily, timed to coincide with the launch of COP 21 conference on climate change here, Modi said, "Some say advanced countries powered their way to prosperity on fossil fuel when humanity was unaware of its impact."

"Since science has moved on and alternative energy sources are available, they argue that those just beginning their development journey bear no less responsibility than those who have reached the zenith of their progress. New awareness, however, should lead advanced countries to assume more responsibility. Just because technology exists does not mean it is affordable and accessible."

"Justice demands that, with what little carbon we can still safely burn, developing countries are allowed to grow. The lifestyles of a few must not crowd out opportunities for the many still on the first steps of the development ladder," he added.

Modi reiterated his plans to launch an alliance of 121 solar-rich nations in the tropics aimed at bringing affordable solar power to villages that are off the grid.

"We expect the same from the world with respect to responding to climate change," he said. Modi along with nearly 150 world leaders world leaders are here to attend the opening of the climate summit with a central aim of the new agreement to keep global warming below 2C over pre-industrial temperatures.

Modi, with a reference to Mahatma Gandhi, said, "We look forward to Paris with the sense of duty that Mahatma Gandhi called us to assume: We should act as trustees' and use natural resources wisely as it is our moral responsibility to ensure that we bequeath to future generations a healthy planet. India will do its part for success in Paris."

His assertion came days after US Secretary of State John Kerry said India could be a "challenge" at upcoming climate change talks in Paris beginning November 30 as it "has been more cautious, a little more restrained in its embrace of this new paradigm".

12:40   Speaker flags off intolerance debate in Parliament
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan flags off intolerance debate in the Lok Sabha under rule 193. The CPM's Mohammad Salim is the first to speak and says there is an "explosive situation in the country with growing intolerance. There is no such thing as manufactured dissent.

"India is a democratic nation, not a fascist one. Our culture is one of tolerance, we are deviating," he says.

On Sunday, parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the government was ready for a debate on intolerance if the Opposition allowed the House to function but defended the government's record, indicating the debate was likely to be stormy.

"Nothing has gone wrong during Narendra Modi's regime as PM, there is absolute tolerance in the country," Naidu said today.

"Different writers have different opinions, Things used to happen earlier also. During the emergency, constitutional and fundamental rights were crippled, these people (writers) were silent then and violent now."

Just in: Congress president Sonia Gandhi leaves for the US for what is being termed a 'routine health visit'. The Congress president has been making visits to the US for an unspecified health condition since 2011. Reports in 2011 said that Sonia Gandhi was advised by her doctors to go abroad for the surgery "because they felt she would convalesce better without the throng of visitors who would have clamoured to see her during the recovery." The inconvenience that her presence in a hospital would
have caused to other patients was another consideration, it added.

This is the third day of the winter session of Parliament with the opposition targetting the government on 'intolerance'.

11:55   Muslim family forced to leave cinema hall for sitting during national athem
A Muslim family was being made to leave a PVR cinema hall in either Mumbai or Bengaluru (no clarity on that yet) for not standing up when the national anthem was being played. The incident has become a new subject of heated social media conversation with many questioning the rationale of playing the national anthem in a movie hall before the start of the film. The video of Muslim family first being physically threatened before being forced to leave the theatre has gone viral now.

Take a look at the video

The over two-minute video clip shows a few people arguing with the family, who they accuse of making excuses for not standing up when the national anthem was playing. The video shows the family, surrounded by the group of people, trying to defend itself.

The Muslim family is then forced to leave the theatre and the people present there welcome that with applause.

Here are some of the tweets on the issue.

@rashi_kakkar  Nationalism is like love. YOU CANNOT FORCE ANYONE TO LOVE YOU. Love happens from within.

‏@AskAnshul  One can sit for continuously 3 hours to watch a Movie in theater but cannot stand up for 2 minutes to respect our National Anthem.

‏@absolutelydanny  So if I were to tweet the lyrics of the national anthem, would you have to stand up while scrolling through your TL? Asking for a friend.

‏@ashwinpande  India is pretty tolerant. That family didn't get killed or stabbed or shot or set aflame for not standing up during the National Anthem.

@jaishrisai1 If your ego is higher than pride for Nation you are not worthy of being here.National Anthem mst b honoured.

‏@rameshsrivats  My personal advice is -
See National Flag: Salute or look respectfully.
Hear National Anthem: Stand up.
Meet National Animal: Run away.

‏@IndiaExplained You can respect the national anthem while sitting too. Supreme Court has ruled no need to stand for it

11:24   I turn 60 next month, I'm thinking of retirement: Parrikar
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today hinted at retiring from politics, while also admitting to a crisis of credible leadership in a small state like Goa.

Speaking at a function organised by the Lokmmanya Multipurpose Co-Operative Credit Society, in Mapusa town about 10 km north of Panaji, Parrikar, a former Goa chief minister, also said that his attention would always linger on Goa and that if the state government veers onto the wrong path, he would endeavour to bring it back on track.

"After 60 (years), one has to think about retirement. I turn 60 on December 13, therefore, I had started thinking about retirement two-three years back. I have to intensify that, therefore, I don't feel inclined to take up big responsibilities," said Parrikar, one of the state's tallest politicians.

After serving as chief minister since 2012, Mr Parrikar was inducted into the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government in late 2014.

"Finally, there is a question mark over the possibility of finding people with leadership qualities in a small state. But one thing I will say, my attention will be on Goa. And if the government in Goa goes on a wrong path, then I will bring it back on track. I can give this guarantee to Goans," he asserted.

Twenty countries, including India, the US and China, will today launch an initiative to double their clean energy research and development budget over the next five years as part of global efforts to tackle climate change.

The total amount of money being committed by these 20 countries -- under Mission Innovation -- amount to USD 20 billion, about half of which would come from the US, White House officials said.

These additional resources will dramatically expand the new technologies that will define a future global power mix that is clean, affordable and reliable, the White House said.

"This is an effort designed to accelerate clean energy innovation and address global climate change, provide affordable clean energy to consumers with a special focus on the developing world in creating commercial opportunities for creating clean energy in developing countries," top Obama adviser Brian Deese told reporters.

10:52   Make taking oath on Constitution mandatory: Shiv Sena
Shiv Sena today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make taking oath on Constitution mandatory, replacing the holy books, so that the country can be pulled out of the tentacles of "religion-based politics".

"The Constitution should be the sacred book for (people of) all religions. All religions are equal before law and this was what late Bal Thackeray said," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamana said.

"All are equal before law but the Constitution is supreme before the law," the editorial said.

"Let people swear by the Constitution in courts instead of religious holy books," the Sena said.

"Modi has said it will be suicidal to think of replacing the Constitution given by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. The PM also said the Constitution is a holy book. "He should now extend that thought and pull out the country from tentacles of religion based politics," the Sena said.
