The last rites of the Army jawan Surendra Singh Gohil who died in a mishap while on patrolling duty in Tangdhar sector in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara region were performed at his village Ainabad in the district today. A large number of people had gathered to pay homage to Gohil, 22, who was attached to the Rajputana Rifles.

Gohil slipped and fell into a deep gorge along an icy route while patrolling on November 28. Though he was tethered by a rope to other jawans, he detached himself so as not to endanger them, according to the official statement.

A contingent of about 50 jawans, led by the Commanding Officer Pushpendra Singh, saluted the brave soldier. After ceremonial guard of honour, Gohil's nephew lit the pyre.
