23:15   Live! Congress decides to support DMK in the RS polls from TN
The Congress today decided to support estranged ally DMK for the June 27 Rajya Sabha polls from Tamil Nadu, with its five MLAs all set to vote for DMK nominee Kanimozhi.

TNCC president B S Gnanadesikan said AICC General Secretary and party's in-charge for Tamil Nadu Mukul Wasnik had informed him of the decision over phone. "Indian National Congress has decided to support Kanimozhi...accordingly, all five Congress MLAs will vote for her," he said in a statement.

The term of six Rajya Sabha MPs from Tamil Nadu ends next month.

The eight-year allies had parted ways in March this year over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, and today's development, being speculated for the past few days, is seen as part of a political realignment ahead of next year's scheduled Lok Sabha polls.

22:20   Live! Cong accuses Modi of 'lying', being 'selective'

Congress today stepped up its attack on Narendra Modi accusing him of telling a "lie" and being "selective" when he claimed that he saved 15,000 people Gujratis, who were stuck in Uttarakhand flash floods.

"In times of such tragedies, you cannot be selective about whom do you want to rescue. It's a very sorry state of affairs if some people engage in such things. During the times of such calamities, it should not matter to which caste or state people belong," party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary told reporters alluding to Modi's reported rescue act.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh was acerbic in his criticism of the Gujarat Chief Minister saying "Feku comes and claims that he has rescued 15000 people. Don't lie this much."

Feku was a hashtag on Twitter used by Congress supporters sometimes back to dismiss the Gujarat Chief Minister's claims on development and his other remarks.

"It is strange that the Army, the Air Force, paratroopers are all engaged in rescue operations day and night and this man (Modi) comes in and claims he has rescued 15,000 people. Don't lie so much Mr Modi, the people aren't that stupid," Singh said.

14:59   Decision on Telangana by June 30?
In other news: The rumour mill in Andhra Pradesh is abuzz that there will be a decision on the Telangana issue by June 30, according to Members of the Telangana Congress.

However, sources in the union and state home ministry say that there is no such thing on the cards and the matter is still under discussion.

June 30 seems to be the date, since there's expected to be a major exodus to the Telangana Rastriya Samithi. Some 10 members of the Congress are already in talks with the TRS regarding moving out of the party.

Congress leaders say that if there is no decision on Telangana their political careers are effectively over. Telangana leaders say that the centre is planning on splitting Andhra Pradesh into two regions and would be called as Rayal-Telangana.

However, in Delhi there is no talk about it and all indications that there would be no announcement until the elections next year. Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has been told to keep the flock together and ensure peace until the elections and only then will a decision be taken on the issue.

14:07   NHRC seeks reports on rescue operations in Uttarakhand
Concerned over the devastating floods in Uttarakhand, NHRC today sought reports from the Central and state governments on the steps taken for relief and rehabilitation and decided to send its own team for an on-the-spot assessment.

Expressing concern over the massive loss of human lives and destruction of property caused by floods and landslides, the NHRC said it hopes that the governments at the Centre and state will take appropriate steps for the evacuation and rehabilitation of these "unfortunate" people.

The Commission appreciates the efforts of the security forces and other agencies who are working admirably in difficult terrains and in appalling conditions to rescue the thousands who are affected, it said.

The NHRC was of the view that the state needed the "full support" of the Centre to tide over the "difficult" situation. It asked the Union Cabinet Secretary to submit a report providing details of the measures which the Centre has already taken and proposes to take to support the efforts of the state.

His house was in a miserable condition and he had lost a lot in the flood, and was left with very little food and water. 12:14   Terrorists will not succeed in their designs: PM
A day after the militant strike in Srinagar left eight soldiers dead, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the entire country is standing united against terrorists and they will not succeed in their designs.

"I want to pay my tributes to the soldiers who laid down their lives while fighting the terrorists," Singh said in his speech after inaugurating 850 MW Rattle power project here along with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The Prime Minister said the entire country is standing united against the terrorists.

"The terrorists will not succeed in their designs." Security is a pre-requisite for development, the Prime Minister said as he paid tributes to the soldiers killed in militant strike yesterday, asserting such attacks would not deter efforts to bring normalcy in the state.

Gandhi also condoled the death of army personnel in the militant attack. "Our analysis is that the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has shown considerable improvement. The terrorist- related violence in 2012 had shown a sharp decline and was the lowest in last two decades," the Prime Minister said. However, Singh said there was a need to keep a constant vigil to prevent attacks like the one that took place yesterday at Hyderpora.

11:55   SC asks Centre to step up relief, nine-day-old bodies rotting
In its second missive since the disaster, the Supreme Court today asked the Centre to step up rescue operations in Uttarakhand.

The IAF, Army and Uttarakhand administration today launched a massive operation to send logistics like firewood and fuel for conducting last rites of those killed in the worst-hit Kedarnath Valley.

Multiple agencies undertaking relief and rescue operations are increasingly getting worried about the imminent spread of diseases and the rotting of the bodies in the temple town area as the tragedy is nine days old now.

But the weather, with heavy cloud cover and rains, is the biggest challenge as heavy choppers like Mi-17 are not able to enter the narrow airspace in the Kedarnath valley, just below Yamunotri.

"All efforts are directed to start the funeral in Kedarnath today. Once the helicopters enter the area we will drop the funeral items," a senior official said requesting anonymity. "Weather check sorties are being flown," a senior IAF officer said.

Prosecutors claimed that Berlusconi had sex with Mahroug during one of his wild 'bunga-bunga' sex parties at his villa near Milan.

03:27   US McDonald's drop halal food after suit
The only two McDonald's restaurants in the United States that were serving food prepared according to Islamic law have stopped several weeks after a $700,000 settlement over a lawsuit that alleged the items weren't consistently halal.

The fast-food giant said in a statement today that the locations in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, which has a large Muslim population, are no longer offering a halal McChicken sandwich or Chicken McNuggets in order "to focus on our national core menu."

The corporation added it takes into account "local and dietary preferences," and supports its franchisees in Dearborn.
Neither the statement nor a spokeswoman said whether McDonald's decision was related to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, brought by customer Ahmed Ahmed in 2011, technically covered anyone who bought the halal-advertised products between September 2005 and January from the two restaurants.

A letter sent to McDonald's and restaurant franchisee Finley's Management, by attorney Kassem Dakhlallah's firm Jaafar and Mahdi Law Group, said Ahmed had "confirmed from a source familiar with the inventory" that the restaurant had sold non-halal food "on many occasions."

03:26   Series of bomb attacks in Iraq kill at least 42
A series of evening bombings near markets in and around Baghdad and other blasts north of the capital killed at least 42 people and wounded dozens of others in the latest eruption of bloodshed to rock Iraq.

The attacks were the latest in a wave of violence that has claimed more than 2,000 lives since the beginning of April.

The violence came as tens of thousands of Shiites poured into the holy city of Karbala, 80 kilometers south of Baghdad, for the annual festival of Shabaniyah, marking the anniversary of the birth of the ninth-century Shiite leader known as the Hidden Imam. Tight security measures were in force to try to prevent insurgent attacks on the worshippers.

One of the deadliest attacks came at night when two bombs placed near a market blew up less than a minute apart in Baghdad's mostly Shiite neighborhood of Husseiniyah, killing 10 people and wounding 30 others.

Police said the second bomb went off among a group of people who had gathered at the scene to help the victims of the first blast.

Earlier, police said that two car bombs exploded within minutes on a commercial street in the mixed neighbourhood of Jihad in western Baghdad, killing nine people and wounding 21 others, police said.

Also, four people were killed and nine others were wounded when a car bomb exploded near a line of shops in the Shiite-dominated area of al-Shurta al-Rabeaa.

03:24   CIA rolls out 'new and improved website'
The Central Intelligence Agency prides itself on secrecy but the spy agency unveiled a revamped wesbite today that promises a user-friendly layout and a "sleeker, more modern web experience."

Borrowing the jargon of corporate marketing, the Central Intelligence Agency touted its new online look for job-seekers or people interested in the spy service's origins.

"The new and improved website reflects CIA's strong commitment to educating and informing the American people about the Agency's history, mission, and organization," John Brennan, CIA director, said in a statement.

"I encourage the public to explore the website and learn more about an American institution dedicated to protecting our country's security," said Brennan, known as the mastermind behind secret drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen.

The CIA, heavily criticized over its reluctance to discuss drone bombing raids abroad or the treatment of terror suspects, said the new site offered more interactive features and more information to the public.

02:01   Mystery as fugitive Snowden vanishes in Moscow
Fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden today vanished in Moscow after failing to take a flight to Cuba on which he was booked, as Washington demanded that Moscow expel him back to the United States.

Snowden, who embarrassed US President Barack Obama with his revelations of massive surveillance programmes, failed to appear on the Aeroflot flight to Havana from where he had been expected to continue to Ecuador and claim asylum.

Russia's Interfax news agency, known for its strong security contacts, confirmed that he was not on the Havana flight and quoted an informed source as saying he was likely already out of the country.

Snowden had arrived in Moscow on Sunday from Hong Kong, from where he leaked to the media details of secret cyber-espionage programmes by both US and British intelligence agencies.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said Snowden was "safe" after leaving Hong Kong with a refugee document supplied by Ecuador after the United States revoked his passport.

The White House dubbed Snowden a traitor to his country and warned both Russia and China that their relations with the US might be damaged by their refusal to extradite him.

"We expect (the Russians) to look at the options available to them to expel Mr Snowden back to the United States," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

01:29   As epidemic threat looms, seers clear mass funeral at Kedarnath
TOI reports: With most stranded pilgrims and locals having been evacuated from the Kedarnath-Gaurikund axis, the next big challenge confronting the authorities is the disposal of hundreds of corpses that are littered in and around the holy shrine.

Unless that's the done, it would be difficult to ward off the outbreak of deadly diseases in the already ravaged hills.

As an emergency measure, Union home minister had consultations with top holy men, including Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand.

The question to them was: would a mass cremation pollute the temple? The seers are learnt to have said it would not if the cremation was done in accordance with the proper rituals and in a wooden pyre.

Accordingly, 150 quintals of wood, sourced from local depots, was transported to Gauchar. The consignment reached there at 3pm on Monday. From there the wood would be moved to Kedarnath by helicopter. Given the amount of wood that's required, it would take a very large number of sorties

01:27   Army completes Kedarnath evac, focus now on Badrinath
The Indian Army has announced the completion of the Kedarnath evacuation.

The Army also stated that 1,000 pilgrims had been escorted to safety from Jungle Chatti, a remote hill with a treacherous terrain.

"Within 48 hours of establishing contact with 1,000 stranded pilgrims in the mountain folds around Jungle Chatti in the Kedar valley, the army evacuated all 1,000 by air and by foot," an army spokesperson said at Dehradun on Monday evening.

With more rain forecast in the region from Tuesday, rescuers are trying to evacuate the remaining 19,000 people stranded in three areas, including Badrinath.

With Kedarnath and Gaurikund region -- the epicentre of the destruction virtually cleared of pilgrims, authorities can focus on those who remain in Badrinath and Harsil. The local police reached Kedarnath and Gaurikund on Sunday and have started the process of identification of bodies.

The 5,000 pilgrims who remain in Badrinath have been put up in different hotels, as Army and ITBP personnel try to step up their operations to get them out of the area. Around 100 people remain in Gaurikund.

01:21   US, Taliban talks might not happen at all
The much anticipated peace talks between the Taliban and the United States might not happen as well, a US official has said, as the Special US envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan left Qatar without any talks with the Afghan insurgent group.

"It might not," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters when asked if there is a possibility of the US-Taliban talks not happening at all.

"The Secretary (of State) said that over the weekend as well. We don't know one way or another. There were some hopeful signs - a couple of steps forward in terms of opening the office. Clearly, some of the agreement that wasn't adhered to, but we want to see if we can get it back on track, but we'll be clear-eyed and continue to see what can happen," he said.

01:20   Nadal suffers Wimbledon humiliation
Twelve-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal crashed to one of the most humiliating defeats in Wimbledon history at the hands of Belgium's world number 135 Steve Darcis on Monday.

Journeyman Darcis clinched a shock 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (10/8), 6-4 win to condemn the fifth-seed Spanish superstar to a first ever loss in the opening round of a major.

It also came just two weeks after Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon champion, had celebrated a record eighth French Open title.

The sensational result was the first time since Gustavo Kuerten in 1997 that a French Open champion had lost in the opening round at Wimbledon.

Nadal's last loss to such a low-ranked player was to Joachim Johansson, the world 690, at the 2006 Stockholm Open.

The defeat, which followed Nadal's second round shocker at the hands of Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic at last year's Wimbledon, brought to an end his 22-match winning streak in 2013.

Darcis, 29, and nicknamed 'Shark', had come into Wimbledon with just two wins under his belt on the tour all year.

"I intend to resist the persecution because I am absolutely innocent and I don't want to abandon my fight to make Italy a truly free and just country," he said.

01:18   US using all legal options to get Snowden back: Obama
President Barack Obama has said that the United States is "following all appropriate legal channels" to apprehend fugitive American whistleblower Edward Snowden, who fled Hong Kong and landed in Moscow.

In brief remarks to White House reporters, Obama said, "What we know is that we are following all the appropriate legal channels and working with various other countries to make sure that the rule of law is observed."

Earlier, the White House said that the decision to allow Snowden to leave Hong Kong will damage US-China relations, and asked Russia to hand him over.
