20:57   Try marines under maritime laws: BJP
The BJP today asked the Centre under what "deal" it had provided an assurance to Italy that no death sentence will be given to the two marines, facing trial for killing two Indian fishermen, and said they should be tried as per maritime laws which envisage stricter punishment.

BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said that the two Italian marines --Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone- should be tried under the "Unlawful Acts Against Safety of Maritime Navigation and Fixed Platforms on Continental Shelf Act, 2002 and not the Indian Penal Code.

"Under this Act, murder attracts only death penalty. But the marines are being tried under the IPC where a life sentence or a death sentence can be given. This has been done to somewhat dilute the punishment," Lekhi said.

16:02   Real life Barbie 'anatomically impossible'
Barbie's doll-size shape -- long been considered the universal ideal for a woman's figure - is anatomically impossible and a lady would be reduced to walking on all fours and incapable of lifting anything, a study has claimed. The shocking experiment by Rehabs.com is aimed at those, who are suffering with eating disorders and are "dying to be Barbie.'

The website reports, Barbie, a world-renowned little girls' toy, is supposed to be 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 110 pounds, so underweight that she will be unable to menstruate.

One of the first editions of the doll, Slumber Party Barbie, even came with a doll-size 'How to lose weight' book with only "Don't eat!' written inside and a scale that is permanently stuck at 110 pounds.

The average woman in the US is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs about 166 pounds. The chart shows that Barbie's head is going to be 2 inches larger than the average US women and 6 inches larger than her own waist. With a 16-inch waist, she only has room for half a liver and a few inches of intestine.

Big-headed, busty Barbie would have only size three feet and tiny ankles, which means that she will have to walk on all fours and her arms, too, would be practically useless, with 3.5-inch wrists, the New York Daily News reported. Her long, skinny neck won't be able to hold her head either.

The BSE benchmark index Sensex declined by 98 points in early trade today due to selling by funds and retail investors amid a weak trend in Asian markets.

The 30-share barometer fell by 98.34 points, or 0.53 per cent, to trade at 18,144.22 points. The index had lost 299.64 points in the previous session.

Infosys, which tumbled over 20 per cent in the previous session on disappointing Q4 results and a weak forecast for this fiscal, was down 1.5 per cent in early trade. Another IT giant TCS was also down over 1 per cent.

Consumer durables, IT, auto, realty and capital goods sector stocks bore the brunt of selling pressure.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 26.75 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 5,501.80 points.

Brokers said sustained selling by funds in the absence of positive trigger and weakening trend on other Asian bourses mainly dampened the trading sentiment.

Besides, investors were cautious ahead of wholesale price index inflation data for March and corporate earnings from bluechips, including RIL and TCS, they said.

09:27   Teenager exposes India's 'one month wives' sex tourism
Campaigners for Muslim women's rights said while short term 'contract marriages' are illegal in India and forbidden in Islam, they are increasing in Hyderabad, where wealthy foreigners, local agents and 'Qazis' are exploiting poverty among the city's Muslim families.

The victim, Nausheen Tobassum, revealed the scale of the problem when she escaped from her home last month after her parents pressurised her to consummate a forced marriage to a middle aged Sudanese man who had paid around 1,200 Pound for her to be his 'wife' for four weeks.

She told police she had been taken by her aunt to a hotel where she and three other teenager girls were introduced to a Sudanese oil company executive.

The 'groom', Usama Ibrahim Mohammed, 44 and married with two children in Khartoum, later arrived at her home where a Qazi performed a wedding ceremony.

09:20   How an SMS nearly got Tiger Woods thrown out of Masters
In golf, and almost no other sport, interactive, real-time communication between armchair television viewers and referees supervising the competition routinely changes rulings and alters the outcomes of tournaments.

This collaboration of living room second-guessers and rules officials is an almost weekly occurrence. On Saturday, it embroiled the Masters, golf's biggest event, in a controversy that involved the games most celebrated player, Tiger Woods.

Woods, who had been three strokes off the lead, was assessed a two-stroke penalty Saturday for hitting from the wrong spot on Friday, a violation first flagged by a television viewer.

Woods could have been disqualified from the Masters, but officials instead invoked a rarely applied two-year-old rule that spares offending players in exceptional cases.

09:18   How the CIA helped Disney conquer Florida
Starting in the mid-1960s when Disney set out to establish the Disney World Theme Park, they were determined to get land at below market prices and Disney operatives engaged in a far-ranging conspiracy to make sure sellers had no idea who was buying their Central Florida property.

By resorting to such tactics Disney acquired more than 40 square miles of land for less than $200 an acre, but how to maintain control once Disney's empire had been acquired?

The solution turned out to be cartoon-simple, thanks to the CIA.

A sessions court will on Monday pronounce the judgment in the German Bakery blast case. The blast had rocked the city three years ago.

The 2010 terror attack had killed 17 people, injured 64 and wrecked the popular eatery. It was the first major terror strike in Pune that dented its tag of being a peaceful city.

The attack on German Bakery, located in upmarket Koregaon Park area and referred to as Pune's very own Cafe Leopold, had proved that Pune was very much on the terror radar.

The attack had highlighted the need for strengthening security and surveillance system in the city.

It was around 7 pm on February 13, 2010 that the powerful blast ripped through the eatery packed with visitors.

Five foreigners were among the 17 killed in the terror attack -- the first after the 26/11 attacks of Mumbai in 2008.

08:27   Pope tells priests: practice what you preach
Pope Francis has told priests to practice what they preach, saying the church's credibility was on the line.

During a Mass to formally take possession of one of the Vatican basilicas in Rome, Francis said ordinary Catholics need to "see in our actions what they hear from our lips."

Francis has made himself an example of a more humble and frugal church by refusing many of the trappings of the papacy, living in the Vatican hotel rather than the Apostolic Palace and wearing a simple white cassock of the papacy rather than
fancy vestments and capes for formal occasions that his
predecessors wore.

"Inconsistency on the part of pastors and the faithful between what they say and what they do, between word and
manner of life, is undermining the church's credibility," he said.

Toward that end, Francis yesterday took the first step toward following through on calls from cardinals that the Vatican be more responsive to the needs of the church on the ground, creating a group of eight cardinals from around the globe to advise him on running the church and reforming the Vatican bureaucracy.
