23:36   Unrest at Srinagar's NIT campus again
Central forces were deployed and police resorted to lathicharge on Tuesday at Srinagar's National Institute of Technology campus after a group of students tried to hold a protest outside campus, demanding that the exams be postponed. The police stopped them and it led to clashes.

The students said that the police had lathicharged a peaceful protest. Some alleged that the police had even entered their hostel and beat them up. Several students have been injured.

On Friday last, the campus had witnessed clashes between local and non-local students over India's defeat in the semi-final match in the World T20 tournament. A fight had started after non-Kashmiri students were irked by the celebrations when India lost.

After the clashes, the NIT authorities had shut down the institute which was reopened on Monday.

23:12   WhatsApp to encrypt users' calls, messages
Messaging giant WhatsApp is rolling out end-to-end encryption, a move that will potentially protect texts and voice calls of its over one billion users from hackers and "regimes".

The announcement has come close on the heels of a legal battle between Apple and the Federal Bureau of Investigation over the US agency's demand that the iPhone maker help unlock its mobile phones. Many Silicon
Valley players had supported Apple citing that user data privacy needs to be respected.
"WhatsApp has always prioritised making your data and communication as secure as possible. And today, we're proud to announce that we've completed a technological development that makes WhatsApp a leader in protecting your private communication: full end-to-end encryption," WhatsApp founder Jan Koum said on the company blogpost.

He added that the latest version of the app will encrypt every call, message, photo, video, file and voice message that is sent on the platform by default, including group chats.
"No one can see inside that message. Not cybercriminals. Not hackers. Not oppressive regimes. Not even us. End-to-end encryption helps make communication via WhatsApp private -- sort of like a face-to-face conversation," he said.

21:08   JIT report on Pathankot attack a slap on the face of India: JDU
The Janata Dal-U today attacked the Centre over Pakistani JIT reportedly putting the blame on India for Pathankot terror attack saying it was a "slap" on the face the country for which Narendra Modi dispensation "is responsible".

"It is a matter of shame for our country that the report of Joint Investigation Team constituted to investigate Pathankot terror attack is reported to have stated that India had staged the drama. "As a citizen of this country, my first question is that whether any country in the world would allow the investigation team of another country to come and investigate the terrorist attack. The answer is no and this has never happened in any country of the world," party President Sharad Yadav said in a statement.

He said "ours is a government which has allowed such a team to investigate and that team has slapped on us". "I do not understand as to who is advising such actions to the high command in this country. This action of the government was not advisable at all and not only we have shown our weakness but also they have made fool of us," Yadav said.

It was one of the most outrageously bold manoeuvres in military history - and 2,000 years on experts are still trying to work out how he pulled it off.But now the mystery of how Hannibal's army managed to catch the Romans off guard by crossing the Alps in an improbable 1,000-mile march could be solved, it is claimed, by tracking a trail of dung.

18:28   Amitabh reacts to Panama Papers: My name has been misused
Just in: Amitabh Bachchan reacts to his name being mentioned in the Panama Papers scandal. The superstar denies any link to the Panama Papers and says it is possible his name has been misused.

"Don't know any of companies referred to by media and I have never been a director of any of those companies. It is possible that my name has been misused. I've paid all my taxes including on monies spent by me overseas.
Monies that I've remitted overseas have been in compliance with law, including remittances through LRS, after paying Indian taxes," Bachchan says.

More than 11 million documents from the secret files of Mossack Fonseca, a law firm headquartered in tax haven Panama, known for its factory-like production of offshore companies for its worldwide clientele of the well-heeled. These records reveal a list of individuals who have paid the firm -- and bought the benefits of the secretive, lax regulatory system in which it operates -- to set up offshore entities in tax havens around the world.

As many as 500 Indians have been named in a massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents exposing their secret offshore dealings. An investigation by The Indian Express claimed that Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are also named in the massive leak of documents from the secret files of Mossack Fonseca, a law firm based in tax haven Panama.

16:42   BJP hits back at Kejriwal
Moments after Kejriwal's press conference, Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay hit back at the Delhi CM. "We all know that CM Kejriwal and his ministers have no respect for the Constitution and he carries out an anarchic agenda just to garner political brownie points," Upadhyay said.

16:41   Kejriwal backs AAP minister who called PM a ISI agent
Launching a scathing attack on the BJP government, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi must apologise to the country for allowing a Pakistani team to visit Pathankot in connection with January 2 terror attack probe.

Kejriwal said the Centre has stabbed "Mother India" in the back by allowing Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) members visit Pathankot.Kejriwal said there was mass anger over the Modi government's decision to allow a Pakistani Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to visit the Pathankot base and also hold talks with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

He recalled that Modi used to thunder at election rallies during the 2014 general election that one had to be stern with Pakistan and that sending "love letters" to Islamabad won't help."So what happened now? Why did our prime minister surrender to Pakistan? What were the compulsions that made him go to Pakistan to wish Happy Birthday to (Prime Minister) Nawaz Sharif? Let them (government) tell us what has been the deal... What happened when Modi went to Pakistan... Modi should apologize to the nation," Kejriwal said.

Responding to a question over his cabinet colleague Kapil Mishra's tweet in which the minister compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi with as agent of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Kejriwal said, "We are not worried about the language. The whole nation is angry over what PM has done. PM  Modi should apologise to the nation."

"Do we have a ISI agent as PM now?? Its very serious the way PM is surrendering to anti India forces?" Mishra had tweeted earlier today.

"Even though BJP/RSS chants 'Bharat Mata ki Jai,' but by inviting ISI to India they have stabbed Mother India in the back," Kejriwal had tweeted in the morning. The government allowed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) from Pakistan, including an ISI official, to visit India last month to probe the terrorist attack in January on Pathankot air force station in Punjab.

The JIT has concluded, according to media reports in Pakistan, that the Pathankot attack was staged by India to spread "viciuos propaganda" against Pakistan.Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been protesting against allowing Pakistan's JIT a role in the investigation on the ground that the ISI, a state actor, has long been the instigator of terrorism in India.

15:53   Beijing beware, Pak-backed terror could strike you next: VK Singh
Union minister Gen VK Singh has said China -- which blocked India's latest attempt to have Jaish-e-Mohammd chief Masood Azhar designated a terrorist by the United Nations - risks getting hit by Pakistan-backed terrorism.

"The friendship between China and Pakistan appears to be very strong but the day is not far when China too gets affected by Pakistan-backed terrorism," said Gen Singh, a former Army chief, adding "When such a situation arises, China will have to pay a heavy price."

After terrorists believed to belong to Azhar's Pakistan-based terror group attacked the Pathankot air base in January, India had written to the United Nations calling for immediate action to list the Jaish chief as a terrorist under the Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee.India's submission was considered by the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED) for technical aspects of the evidence provided and, with the support of the US, UK and France was sent to all members. However, hours before the deadline, China requested that the committee put banning the Masood Azhar on hold.

15:38   Hema gets flak for 'senseless suicides' tweets on Pratyusha
Actor-politician Hema Malini is being criticized as insensitive for her tweets on what she calls "senseless suicides".

"The world admires a fighter not a loser," the BJP lawmaker says in one of the tweets posted on Monday night. The choice of words has drawn strong feedback days after the suicide of Ballika Vadhu actress Pratyusha Banerjee.

The 24-year-old was found hanging at her Mumbai home on April 1. Hema Malini does not mention Pratyusha in her tweets.

The MP from Mathura tweeted: "All these senseless suicides which achieve nothg! Life is God's gift for us to live not for us to take at will. We have no right to do that.

"One must learn to overcome all odds & emerge successful, not succumb under pressure & give up easily. The world admires a fighter not a loser."

Pratyusha Banerjee, a familiar face on TV from the serials Balika Vadhu and Sasural Simar Ka and reality show Bigg Boss, was declared dead at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, where she was taken after being found dead at her Goregaon apartment. Her fiance Rahul Raj Singh, currently in hospital himself being treated for chest pain and low blood pressure, has been questioned by cops.

15:33   Bharat Mata row: Sena accuses Fadnavis of 'going soft' on Owaisi
Hitting out at Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, ally Shiv Sena today said he has "no moral right" to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' so long has he failed to put AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi behind the bars for refusing to do so.

The Sena also took potshots at Fadnavis for "going soft" on the slogan issue after taking an aggressive stand at a public meeting at Nashik recently.

"After getting aggressive, the CM has now gone soft. There was no need for him to go back on his statement. He needs to make it clear why did he do so and put all the blame on media," the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

Fadnavis, while speaking in the Assembly yesterday, had said that whether or not he remains the CM, he will keep chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and blamed the media for only focusing on a part of his speech made at Nashik where he had said that those who refuse to chant the slogan have no right to stay in this country.

13:51   Why the Windies are world champs
While on cricket...

The legendary cricket writer Prem Panicker on why the Windies are world beaters:

"I forget where I read this, but the best explanation for the rise of the Windies in T20 stems from the problem itself: The WICB won't pay the senior stars, won't pick them (okay, faults on both sides) and so have reduced them to mercenaries. (A friend on Twitter used the analogy of samurai who, unwanted by their liege lord, turn ronin and roam the world, killing for a fee).

"What this has meant is that while this team plays very little together as a team, they are for their various franchises doing just this one thing day in and out -- playing T20, against all sorts of opposition in all sorts of conditions. And to get well paid by franchises means you really have to excel, so goes without saying this team is made up of 11 players who each excel, in some franchise or other, every other day of the year.

"And then for a world event they get together, and no matter what you think of team spirit and all that jazz, having 11 players any of whom can swing a game on his day is worth gold in the shortest form of the sport."

13:04   No Cong minister if DMK wins Tamil Nadu polls
DMK leader MK Stalin's strategy will make the  Congress feel shortchanged in the event the M Karunanidhi-led party wins the Tamil Nadu elections.

Our sources tell us that Stalin, who is believed to have engineered the alliance with the Congress for the 2016 polls, has a pre-condition in the agreement which clearly says that the DMK will not accommodate the Congress in the Tamil Nadu ministry. This is obviously a major setback to Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had met Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai on Monday for seat sharing talks .

The agreement will be handed over to the Governor of Tamil Nadu if the DMK is to stake a claim even if it were a minority government. In other words Congress MLAs will be a 'paid partner", meaning which they will get a monthly salary, but no portfolios.

Yesterday, after meeting the DMK chief Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai, Azad said, "Congress will be contesting on 41 seats in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

"I am sure that under the leadership of Karunanidhi ji, we'll be able to form the government in Tamil Nadu."

After joining hands for 2004 Lok Sabha polls, DMK had walked out of the alliance with Congress-led UPA in 2013 over the vexed Sri Lankan Tamils issue. The DMK had then accused the then UPA government in Centre of not handling the Sri Lankan Tamils issue properly

12:16   Jaya lays down new rules for allies
Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa has made changes to the pattern of electioneering in state when it goes to the polls next month. For the first time, Jaya has ensured that five of her allies contest on her party symbol -- the two leaves.

This is a clear shift in strategy since during previous poll agreements, allies used to contest on their poll symbol. This move, believes the AIADMK will stymie defectors and smaller parties from walking out of the alliance.

Jayalalithaa allotted seven of Tamil Nadu's 234 seats to allies Monday and announced an initial list of 227 candidates for her party. Jayalalithaa will contest once again from R K Nagar, north of Chennai city, from where she had won the bypoll last June with a margin of 1.5 lakh votes.

PM Narendra Modi's suggestions to the organisers of international events, summits or seminars are always unique. Moreover, the PM ensures that his suggestions are reviewed, rehearsed and acted upon.

For instance, when India hosts the first-ever Global Maritime Summit in Mumbai on April 14, the PM wants the organisers to  have a counter for brochures and at least 30 tablets.

This is to enable foreign investors to tap on to the tablet and scour any sector for investments. There are officials to act as guides at this stall which is called 'E-corner for Maritime Summit.

Senior officials of the Shipping Ministry are on their toes ensuring everything works since the Prime Minister will visit this e-literature corner on the inauguration day.

09:14   'Pathankot attack was a staged drama'
A report in a Pakistani daily has reported that the team that visited India believes that Indian authorities had prior information about the attackerrs and used the attack as a tool to expand its 'vicious propaganda' against Pakistan 'without having any solid evidence to back the claim'.

According to the paper, a source said that the JITs report states that the Indian government did not cooperate with the JIT and instead made efforts to hinder the probe by the Pakistani team.

The report also raises serious questions over the veracity of Indian claims regarding the Pathankot attack. The JIT has concluded that contrary to the claims of the Indian government about the duration of the encounter, the standoff between the Indian army and alleged terrorists ended within hours of the attack, the source quoted the report, adding that this finding has made it clear that the attack was a drama staged to malign Pakistan and persuade the world community that Pakistan is involved in terrorism.

The trove of documents, known as the Panama Papers, was anonymously leaked to German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and shared with more than 100 media groups by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, with more information expected to be released over the coming days and weeks.

01:11   After Shingnapur, women attempt to enter Kolhapur's Mahalaxmi temple
Following the controversy regarding allowing women into the core area of Shani temple at Shingnapur in Maharashtra, a row erupted on Monday at another famous shrine in the state, the Goddess Mahalaxmi temple in
Kolhapur, over the same issue.
The Bombay high court had last week ruled that there can not be any discrimination against women at the temples, however, the locals at Shingnapur two days ago refused to allow women activists to go up to the platform of Shani temple.
Activists of the women's organisation 'Avani' alleged that they too were not allowed to enter the sanctum of the Mahalaxmi temple.
The organisation had decided to break the taboo against women's entry in the core area of sanctum in the light of the high court judgement, but some women devotees did not allow its activists in, she said.

00:14   ISRO-NASA to jointly launch satellite to study earthquakes
In a first, space agencies of India and the US will collaborate to launch a satellite that will help study earthquake and its patterns.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Indian Space Research Organisation Synthetic Aperture Radar, or NISAR, satellite is designed to observe and take measurements of some of the planet's most complex processes, including ecosystem disturbances, ice-sheet collapse, and natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and landslides.
The two countries are also collaborating in a major way in the Mars Mission project.
NASA Administrator Charles Frank Bolden said they are looking to launch the satellite by 2020-21, but ISRO A S Kiran Kumar said they are looking to prepone the launch.
"The US is providing L-Band. It will help us look at crustal deformation. We are looking for hints at earthquake detection. We cannot predict earthquake but we can advise people where it has occurred. We are hoping to launch it by 2020-21," Bolden told reporters.
Heads and representatives of several space agencies have assembled in the national capital to discuss applications of remote sensing technologies for disaster mitigation and bettering global climate change monitoring.
Kumar said that for India, the project will not only help in understanding the seismic activity but also give inputs for monitoring agricultural activities.
