Central forces were deployed and police resorted to lathicharge on Tuesday at Srinagar's National Institute of Technology campus after a group of students tried to hold a protest outside campus, demanding that the exams be postponed. The police stopped them and it led to clashes.

The students said that the police had lathicharged a peaceful protest. Some alleged that the police had even entered their hostel and beat them up. Several students have been injured.

On Friday last, the campus had witnessed clashes between local and non-local students over India's defeat in the semi-final match in the World T20 tournament. A fight had started after non-Kashmiri students were irked by the celebrations when India lost.

After the clashes, the NIT authorities had shut down the institute which was reopened on Monday.
