Four years after a towering tsunami ravaged much of Japan's northeastern coast, efforts to fend off future disasters are focusing on a nearly 400-kilometre chain of cement sea walls, at places nearly five stories high.

Opponents of the 820 billion yen (Rs 42,570 crore) plan argue that the massive concrete barriers will damage marine ecology and scenery, hinder vital fisheries and actually do little to protect residents who are mostly supposed to relocate to higher ground. Those in favour say the sea walls are a necessary evil, and one that will provide some jobs, at least for a time.

15:25   Nine British medics enter IS stronghold to work in hospitals
Nine young British medical students have travelled illegally to Syria and are believed to be working in hospitals in Islamic State-controlled areas. Their families were mounting a desperate effort  at the Turkish-Syrian border to persuade them to come home.

The group of four women and five men crossed the border last week, apparently keeping their plans secret from relatives until just before entering Syria, when one woman sent her sister a brief message and a smiling selfie.

"We all assume that they are in Tel Abyad now, which is under Islamic State control. The conflict out there is fierce, so medical help must be needed," Turkish opposition politician Mehmet Ali Ediboglu told the Observer, shortly after meeting the families.

"They have been cheated, brainwashed. That is what I, and their relatives, think." Both he and the students' parents were convinced that the young medics wanted to work with IS, Ediboglu said, but they were also certain that the group did not plan to take up arms. "Let's not forget about the fact that they are doctors; they went there to help, not to fight. So this case is a little bit different."

13:23   Beep it! Bans fuel fears of intolerance in India
"Don't eat it, read it, see it, feel it," sings the Michael Jackson impersonator as she raps her way through a list of pleasures banned by India's conservative government before chorusing: "Just beep it!"

As the world's largest democracy, India has long been proud of its tradition of artistic, cultural and religious freedoms. But a series of bans, ranging from eating beef to watching the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, has sparked accusations of a growing climate of intolerance under Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Critics say the bans show how thin-skinned their politicians have become in the Internet age where attempts to put a lid on offending material are likely to backfire.
