An Egyptian court today set April 4 date for the retrial of former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons on graft charges. 

In January, the court overturned Mubarak's conviction on corruption charges and ordered that he and his sons Alaa and Gamal be tried again.

Apple kicked off an event expected to focus on Apple Watch with something else: an announcement that HBO's streaming service will debut on Apple TV and devices exclusively next month.

CEO Tim Cook welcomed HBO CEO Richard Plepler to the stage after discussing Apple's newest retail store in China, and the television executive announced that its HBO Now service will debut in April for $14.99 a month, with the first month free for customers who sign up early. 

The service will originally be available exclusively on apps for Apple devices as well as Apple TV.

BJP today said top separatist leader Masarat Alam is not a political prisoner but an "extremist with Rs 10 lakh bounty" on his head. 

"Masarat Alam does not fit into the definition of a political prisoner. He is a criminal, separatist and extremist for India. He carries a Rs 10-lakh bounty on his head," BJP leader and spokesperson Vijay Sonkar Shastri said.

A large business delegation from India will participate in Egypt's economic conference this week to explore opportunities in the most populous Arab country. 

India's Ambassador to Egypt Navdeep Suri will lead around 43 people, comprising representatives from 25 Indian companies in addition to a delegation from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the Economic Development Conference (EEDC) scheduled for March 13-15 in Sharm el-Sheikh city.

22:10   4 more H1N1 deaths reported from Maha; toll mounts to 215
Four persons died today of swine flu in Maharashtra, raising the fatalities from the disease in the state to 215 so far.

"Out of four deaths, two are reported from Pune and one each from Satara and Aurangabad. A total of 88 new cases have been reported across the state today," an official from the State Health Department told PTI.

The number of cases so far stands at 2,589 whereas 42 people infected by the H1N1 virus are on ventilator, the official said.

22:01   ED summons Separatist leader Shabir Shah in terror finance case
Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in connection with a decade-old case of terror financing through 'hawala channel'.

Shah, the Chairman of Democratic Freedom Party of Jammu and Kashmir, has been summoned here for March 24, official sources said here. The case relates to August 2005 of then Delhi police's special cell when they arrested Mohammed Aslam Wani, an alleged hawaladealer, who had claimed that he had passed on Rs 2.25 crore to Shah.

When contacted, Shah, who has denied these charges earlier, said that he was not aware of any summons. When pressed further, he said that he was in a meeting and he will talk tomorrow.

21:31   Mulayam's health improves, shifted out of ICU
Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav's health has improved and he has been shifted out of the ICU.

"The condition of party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has improved and he has been shifted out of the ICU and moved to private ward," his brother and UP Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav told reporters.

"He essentially needs at least four days rest although doctors have advised him seven days rest... all his tests have been conducted and their results are normal," Shivpal said.

The Shiv Sena today virtually justified the lynching of a rape accused in Nagaland, saying mob fury reflects people's anger towards sexual crimes against women and the kind of justice meted out to the man should happen in Maharashtra as well.

"The way justice was meted out to the rape accused in Nagaland, should happen in Maharashtra as well. Cases relating to rape carry on for years, with the accused getting no punishment for his crime," Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam told media persons in Mumbai.

21:08   124 lions died in two years, says Gujarat government
 The Gujarat government today said that as many as 124 lions died during the last two years in and around Gir forest. During the question hour in the assembly, Congress MLA Natvarsinh Thakor raised a question about deaths of lions aswell as leopards in Sasan Gir and Dhari Gir forests in the last two years.

In a written question, Thakor asked the Gujarat government to reveal how many animals died due to poaching. In his written reply, Gujarat Forest Minister Mangubhai Patel stated that 124 lions and 135 leopards died during the last two years, adding that out of 124 lions, 63 died during 2013-14 (February 1,2013 to January  31, 2014)while 61 died during 2014-15.

21:05   LS set for confrontation over land bill tomorrow
Lok Sabha is set to witness a confrontation over Land Acquisition Bill tomorrow when it is taken up for voting with opposition bent on opposing it even as the government again offered to make changes in the legislation in the "larger interest" of the farming community.

NDA partner Shiv Sena, meanwhile, was ambivalent on the issue, even though its support will hardly matter in the Lower House where BJP has majority on its own.

Toughening its stand, Congress today decided that it will vote against the bill unless it is sent to the Parliamentary Standing Committee or presented in the original form as passed in 2013. It decided to issue a three-line whip to its members in the Lower House asking them to be present and vote against the measure.

20:55   India unveils Rotavirus vaccine, claimed to be cheapest
India today unveiled its indigenously developed and manufactured Rotavirus vaccine, claimed to be the world's cheapest at the rate of around Rs 60 per dose and aimed at boosting efforts to deal with diarrhoea that kills up to 80,000 children under 5 every year.

'Rotavac', launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the third such vaccine available globally against Rotavirus.

The Bharat Biotech India Limited, which was involved in the development and production of the vaccine, has given an undertaking to keep the cost of the vaccine at $1 (approx Rs 60) per dose, a PMO statement said, adding at the current prices, it will be the cheapest.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said political rivalry with BJP notwithstanding he would not hesitate to knock doors of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the interest of the state.

"In the interest of Bihar I will go to anybody and even knock the doors of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," Kumar said addressing a public function at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district.

Kumar's rivalry with PM Modi is an open secret. He had driven JD-U to severe ties with BJP in June 2013 ending 17-year-old alliance.

20:30   Cong to vote against Land Bill if govt does not drop changes
Toughening its stand, Congress today decided to vote against against controversial Land Bill in Lok Sabha tomorrow if Government does not withdraw changes or refuses to send it to the Standing Committee.

Party President Sonia Gandhi chaired two meetings of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the party and all its 44 Lok Sabha MPs to discuss the strategy over the bill, whose 2013 version was the brainchild of party Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

The party is issuing a three-line whip to its members in the Lower House asking them to be present and vote against the measure.

19:59   Lanka court bars Rajapaksa's brother from leaving the country
A Sri Lankan court today imposed a travel ban on Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, former defence secretary and brother of ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, and impounded his passport amid a probe into huge private floating arsenals set up during the previous regime when he was in office.

A magistrate court in the southern port city of Galle issued an order preventing Gotabhaya -- the powerful defence secretary under his brother's administration -- and three others from leaving the country until the conclusion of investigation.

The court also impounded their passports, police said. "Police investigating the Avant-Garde Security Service floating armoury case sought and secured a ban on their travel abroad," police said in a statement. In January, shortly after the defeat of the President Rajapaksa, a ship carrying 12 container loads of weapons was discovered in Galle.

The ship was carrying over 3,000 automatic weapons, including machine guns.

Sidelined Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy in an interview to CNN-IBN said, "I will not confirm whether I plan to join the BJP, my present status is what should be of interest."

"I am presently just an MP of the upper house of the Parliament elected by the party and nothing more," he said.

"I think that the TMC should not have opposed the Presidents statement in the Parliament, it is against the convention and hurts the prestige of both the Parliament and the President," he added.

An Indian student was denied an internship at the  Leipzig University in Germany because he comes from a country with a "rape problem."

Professor Annette Beck Sickinger denied the  Indian male student an internship  at Institute of Biochemistry, saying that they don't take Indian male students because they might commit crimes like rape, a thread of e-mails reproduced on Quora reveals.    

The email reads, " Unfortunately I don't accept any Indian male students for internships. We hear a lot about the rape problem in India which I cannot support. I have many female students in my group, so I think this attitude is something I cannot support."

19:12   Ban on India's Daughter not right: Anushka Sharma
Actress Anushka Sharma has joined other Bollywood celebrities to criticise the government's move to ban the documentary on December 16 gang rape in India, saying such things make our country look regressive.

The 26-year-old actress said although she has not watched the documentary 'India's Daughter' by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, she feels the audience is mature enough to decide what they should watch.

"I think such things should be left to public discretion and people's intelligence. We are old enough to deal with our emotions in that way. If other people decide what we should watch then in a way they are judging our thought process. That is my problem."

"Keeping silent about such things is not an option otherwise, it will make us regressive as a society. People will feel repressed and it would lead to a lot more problems," said the actress, who will be next seen in 'NH10'.

19:10   Controversial UP politician, guilty for murder, surrenders in CBI court
Controversial Uttar Pradesh politician and former MP D P Yadav today surrendered before a special CBI court in Deharadun in connection with the 1992 murder of Mahendra Singh Bhati.

Soon after Yadav surrendered in the court of special CBI judge Amit Kumar Sirohi, he was sent to Dehradun jail, his counsel Rupendra Bhandari said. The court which held Yadav and three others guilty in the case on February 28 is likely to pronounce the quantum of punishment in the case tomorrow, he said.

The CBI court had issued an arrest warrant against Yadav when he did not appear in the court on February 28 on medical grounds. D P Yadav, Pal Singh, Karan Yadav and Praneet Bhati had been convicted in the case under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. Mahendra Singh Bhati, who was an MLA from Ghaziabad's Dadri area, was shot dead at the Dadri railway crossing in December 1992.

18:57   BJP demands re-arrest of separatist leader Masarat Alam
Bharatiya Janata Party legislators in Jammu and Kashmir today lodged a strong protest with Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed over the release of hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam and demanded his re-arrest. The party also took exception to the "misinformation campaign" that the decision to release Alam was taken after consulting it.   

The MLAs led by state BJP General Secretary Rajiv Jasrotia met Sayeed at his residence and submitted a memorandum. "We have lodged a strong protest with the chief minister and expressed our deep concern over the unilateral decision (of release of the Masarat Alam)," Jasrotia told reporters later.   

He said that Sayeed assured them that their concerns would be addressed.   The BJP also asked Sayeed to consider re-arrest of Alam in view of the statements made by him soon after his release in Kashmir.

18:10   Removal of Yadav, Bhushan to be discussed in AAP's National Council meeting
Removal of senior leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav from the Political Affairs Committee will be discussed in the AAP's National Council meeting later this month, party sources said.

The National Council, which has around 300 members is supposed to meet once every year. This year, the NC will meet on March 28.

"Many issues including removal of Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav from the PAC will be disccused in the meeting.

There are some other administrative issues, which is also likely to come up for discussion.

"However, there will be more clarity in what the agenda will be after Arvind (Kejriwal) comes back from Bengaluru," sources said.

The Delhi Chief Minister is on a 10-day break and is seeking naturotherapy at Bengaluru, owing to persistent high sugar level.

Bhushan and Yadav were voted out from the PAC in the National Executive meeting held last week after a section of the party alleged that they wanted to remove party chief Arvind Kejriwal from the post of the National Convenor.

The National Council is the third most important body in the party after all powerful Political Affairs Committee and the National Executive.

Tehseen, a well known businessman and Congress supporter is set to marry Monika Vadra, the cousin sister of Robert Vadra who is husband to Priyanka Gandhi.

Just in: At least one person was killed, while another was injured in firing near a tea stall in the Qutub Minar area in Delhi. 

The masked assailant fired at the two victims before fleeing in a car.

Cops have started investigating the case.

The Delhi High Court refused an urgent hearing on a PIL that sought to lift the ban on a documentary on Nirbhaya gangrape case. 

The documentary, India's Daughter, which was aired by BBC under much protestation from the Indian government featured a controversial interview with one of the rape accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape case.

The Jammu unit of Shiv Sena protested against the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam.

The controversial decision to release Alam rocked both houses of parliament and accrued much ire from opposition political parties.

Alam's release came soon after the controversial statement by newly sworn J&K CM Mufti Mohammed Sayeed that the recently concluded assembly elections went without a hitch due to the help of separatist leaders.

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani met Pakistan envoy to India Abdul Basit on Monday.

This meeting comes hot on the heels of the controversial release of separatist leader Masarat Alam and the statement by newly sworn J&K CM Mufti Mohammed Sayeed that the elections went smoothly because of the separatists.

According to sources, Geelani and Basit discussed political developments in J&K.

Opposition leader and Congress leader Rajeev Shukla said, "Govt must lodge its protest against this, such meetings cannot be allowed." 

"The Pak High Commissioner came to me. We had a discussion on Indian Foreign Secretary's visit to Pakistan," Geelani said, while clarifying about the nature of the meeting.

16:50   Pak test-fires missile that can hit Indian cities
Pakistan today successfully test launched a surface-to-surface ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads to a distance of 2,750 kilometres, bringing most Indian cities under its range.

Shaheen-III's test launch was aimed at validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system at maximum range, Pakistan Army said.

"The successful launch, with its impact point in the Arabian Sea, was witnessed by senior officers from Strategic Plans Division, strategic forces, scientists and engineers of strategic organisations," it said.

Director General Strategic Plans Division Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat termed the test a major step towards strengthening Pakistan's deterrence capability.

16:38   Modi to be first PM to visit Sri Lanka in 28 years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sets off tomorrow on a five-day tour of Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka that is expected to give traction to the country's Indian Ocean outreach during which he also visit a former war zone and Tamil heartland of Jaffna.

As Modi visits Sri Lanka on March 13-14 on the third and final leg of his tour, Indian officials said on Monday that New Delhi is looking forward to a solution to the "humanitarian' issue of its fishermen's rights amid controversial remarks by Lankan Premier Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Jaffna where he will hand over homes built with the help of Indian assistance.

An Indian Prime Minister is also visiting the island nation after a gap of 28 years since late Rajiv Gandhi last visited the country in 1987.

16:30   India not a country of rapists: German ambassador's repudiating letter to Leipzig prof
After reports appeared of an Indian student, who had applied to a German university for admission, being reportedly turned down by a professor of the Leipzig University citing the 'rape culture in India', the German ambassador to India Michael Steiner wrote a strongly worded letter to the professor of the prestigious German varsity.

In his letter, Steiner asserted that the Indian government and Indian civil society organisations are very committed to tackling the issue. 

Steiner also stated in explicit terms: India is not a country of rapists.

The Peoples Democratic Party has hit back at the Centre over the release of hardliner Masarat Alam. Sources within the party have expressed their ire over the issue, saying, "We don't have to share every decision with the Prime Minister's Office."

Earlier in the day, PM Modi expressed his outrage and anguish over Alam's release in Lok Sabha saying that the government had not been informed of the decision and that the BJP-led government would not do anything to jeopardise the security or integrity of India.

Sudhir Gautam would be eternally grateful to Sachin Tendulkar. Facing troubles with the New Zealand Customs officials, the superfan was let out of his dilemma when he showed them a letter written by the Little Master. 

New Zealand have one of the toughest immigration rules in the world. Customs officials confiscated the bottles of colour that Sudhir was carrying. According to a report in the India Today website, Sudhir was asked to pay a hefty fine (approximately Rs 65000) for violating law. Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was removed from the post of Rajasthan Cricket Association president as the members of the association passed a no-confidence motion against him and his office-bearers at the extraordinary general meeting. 

Modi, who has been seeking to legitimise his return to the helm of RCA, was dealt a telling blow after the voting was carried out. His supporters though allege that they were denied entry and that their bus was even stoned by members of the rival faction.

Amid statements from the PM and the Home Minister on separatist leader Masarat Alam's release from prison in Lok Sabha, Hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani stirred a controversy over the status of Kashmir, saying that India should realise that "Jammu and Kashmir is disputed territory and not a part of the country".

Speaking about Alam's release, he added that the charges against Alam were baseless as he knew him well and that this was merely a political stunt by parties.

Breaking his silence over the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement in Lok Sabha on the same. Speaking in Lok Sabha, the PM said, "I am in sync with the outrage that is being asserted in the nation and the Parliament." He assured the House and the country that the central government had not been consulted on decisions taken by the J-K government."We will not tolerate any step which undermines unity of the country," he assured the house.

When opposition kept intervening and asking about the BJP's patriotism, Modi hit back at them, saying, "Do not teach us patriotism."

Home Minister Rajnath Singh arrives in Lok Sabha to issue a statement on the release of the separatist leader Masarat Alam's release. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he said, "As soon as we heard the news of Masrat Alam's release we asked for a report from J&K home ministry. Public safety and public security will not be compromised by this government and neither will we compromise on nation's security."

He added that Alam has 27 criminal cases against him for which he has received bail in all and according to the law of the land, we can't detain him for more than 2 years.

The situation in Dimapur town of Nagaland, where a mob lynched a rape accused, was returning to normalcy with curfew being relaxed and markets reopening after three days even as more arrests were made in connection with the incident. The total number of persons taken under custody has risen to 43, said police officials.

Within minutes of the Lok Sabha proceedings beginning, chaos ensued with Congress's Mallikarjun Kharge raising the issue of the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam. Speaking on the issue, Kharge said, "If Masarat Alam is released it raises question on democracy, this release needs to be stopped." Kharge further added that PM Modi should provide an answer in the matter. Leaders in the Lok Sabha then started chanting, "Jawab do, jawab do' and not allowing proceedings to continue.

A special court postponed its verdict in the multi-billion dollar Satyam fraud case to April 9. The six-year-old case rattled the corporate world after its founder and former chairman Ramalinga Raju on January 7, 2009, confessed to manipulating Satyam's account books and inflating profits over many years to the tune of Rs.7,136 crore. The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the case said that the fraud was much bigger and alleged that the scam caused a loss of Rs. 14,000 crore to shareholders of Satyam.

After the Congress and other opposition parties have raised a hue and cry over the release of prominent separatist Masarat Alam, Home Minister Rajnath Singh will issue a statement on the same in Parliament. The Congress has demanded that the PM explain why their government is going easy and has allowed this to happen.

10:21   Banned documentary India's Daughter screened in Agra village
In an angry response to the ban on India's Daughter, the BBC documentary, an activist involved with the NGO 'Stop Acid Attacks' set up a huge projector in an Agra village on Sunday evening, and screened the film. 

The activist, Ketan Dixit, an independent documentary film-maker, said that he was prompted to organise the screening as a "mark of protest against the ban" and that he was ready to "face any action that was initiated against him".

"The Indian government is inviting the world to point fingers at India, and call it undemocratic and unconstitutional," said Leslee Udwin of the ban on the documentary India's Daughter, which has resulted in the film going viral on YouTube. "Why are they doing this? Why are they intent on committing international suicide?" asked the award-winning British producer who directed the documentary that has been at the centre of a storm in India. "All I want to say to the world through my film and campaign is this: India led by example, now follow India's lead."

A record-breaking attempt to fly around the world in a solar-powered plane has got under way from Abu Dhabi.The aircraft - called Solar Impulse-2 - took off from the Emirate, heading east to Muscat in Oman.Over the next five months, it will skip from continent to continent, crossing both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the process.Andre Borschberg was at the controls of the single-seater vehicle as it took off.He will share the pilot duties in due course with fellow Swiss, Bertrand Piccard.

08:04   After Masarat Alam, Mufti to release another separatist leader
It seems the Bharatiya Janata Party is in for more trouble after its ally in Jammu-Kashmir, the Peoples Democratic Party, is now securing the release Ashiq Hussain Faktoo, a separatist leader, who has been lodged in in Srinagar jail for the past 22 years. 

Faktoo, is a top-ranking former commander of the Islamist outfit Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen. He has been serving life imprisonment for his alleged involvement in the murder of human rights activist HN Wanchoo.

The release of hardline separatist leader Masrat Alam has already put the BJP in a helpless position, with the party claiming that it was not taken into confidence while taking decision. 

Security agencies have stated concerns that release of separatists like Alam and Faktoo will vitiate the atmosphere of valley causing more terrorism.
