After reports appeared of an Indian student, who had applied to a German university for admission, being reportedly turned down by a professor of the Leipzig University citing the 'rape culture in India', the German ambassador to India Michael Steiner wrote a strongly worded letter to the professor of the prestigious German varsity.

In his letter, Steiner asserted that the Indian government and Indian civil society organisations are very committed to tackling the issue.

Steiner also stated in explicit terms: India is not a country of rapists.
