22:05   Why is BJP avoiding polls in Delhi, wonders Kejriwal
Arvind Kejriwal, who had taken on Narendra Modi in Varanasi constituency, today said "perhaps" he is the most popular leader in the country currently but wondered why BJP is avoiding facing polls in the capital when it claims a wave in its favour.

The AAP leader, who quit the Chief Minister's post after leading a 49-day-long government, said BJP was afraid of losing elections and that is why it was trying to avoid facing the electorate despite winning all seven seats in Lok Sabha polls in Delhi.

"They are afraid they will lose. All the surveys coming now are showing that AAP will get an overwhelming majority if the elections are held today. It is their government at the Centre, it is their government in MCD. They have seven MPs and they claim it is a wave sweeping across the nation in their favour. Then go for an election. Why they are resorting to these kind of horse trading, buying of MLAs, offering four crore rupees," he said.

"Perhaps," Kejriwal said when asked whether he agreed that Modi was the most popular leader in the country now.

Coming down hard on Lt Governor Najeeb Jung for seeking to invite BJP to form government in the city, Kejriwal said there was "absolutely no possibility" for the saffron party to take over the reins without indulging in horse-trading.

"The manner in which the LG of Delhi has behaved in the last few weeks clearly shows that he has been batting for BJP," Kejriwal told television channels.

22:01   Govt releases Asiad list, drastically prunes contingent to 679
Ending days of suspense, the government today cleared a drastically pruned-down 679-member Indian contingent, including 516 athletes, for the upcoming Asian Games, with the sports ministry deciding against dropping five disciplines which were facing the axe.

The Indian Olympic Association had submitted to the ministry a proposed contingent of 942 -- 662 athletes and 280 officials -- in 35 disciplines but the government, after consulting the Prime Minister's Office, decided to drop as many as 263 from the list (146 athletes and 117 officials).

India will now take part in the September 19-October 4 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in 28 disciplines. In the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, India had sent a contingent of 933 -- 609 athletes and 324 officials.

Football, table tennis, handball, basketball and sepaktakraw teams were cleared despite the ministry's earlier plan to drop them, apparently due to pressure from the NSFs and the IOA and also the warning from the Olympic Council of Asia that the country would be penalised if it withdraws from the five disciplines.

22:00   Jet management, JetLite pilots meet; no decision on demands
A meeting between Jet Airways management and pilots of its subsidiary airline JetLite was held today but no decision was arrived at on the issue of demands of the pilots, who are opposed to their shifting to the parent company.

However, the company, in a statement termed the meeting as "constructive and well received".

The meeting with the pilots was called by the airline chief executive (designate) Cramer Ball in New Delhi to resolve the conscientious issue of seniority and career progression of JetLite pilots after their merger with Jet Airways.

"The pilots wanted a firm commitment from the management on their demands including service pay protection and maintaining of seniority before transferring them to the parent Jet Airways, which has not been accepted by the company," an airline source familiar with the development told PTI after the meeting.

The management said that it was open to further talks on the issue but did give any commitment to the pilots on meeting their demands, the source said.

Airline chairman Naresh Goyal had last month announced his plans to exit low-cost services and merge its two no-frills brands with parent full service carrier by year end. In the process, some 230 JetLite pilots will be shifted to the parent company.

20:53   Telangana government completes 100 days in office
An urge to break from the past, treading a new path and seeking to leave a Telangana stamp on different issues mark the tenure of the TRS government which completed 100 days in office today.

Having successfully led the agitation for formation of Telangana State, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who during Assembly elections promised to adopt a "new approach" in governance, sought to reach out to different sections by making them feel part of his administration.

The Telangana Government, however, had a frosty relation with the new Andhra Pradesh for most of the 100 days until Rao and his counterpart in the adjoining State N Chandrababu Naidu broke the ice last month.

The TRS Government almost came to a confrontation with the BJP-led ruling coalition at the Centre over the issue of special powers to common Governor in Hyderabad.

The Government's decisions like dropping police cases against those who agitated for separate state, offering special 'Telangana increment' to the Government employees and offering Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia for families of 'Telangana martyrs', recognising Telangana festivals like Bonalu and Bathukamma have endeared him to the people.

19:39   German ambassador takes 'rice bucket challenge'
German ambassador Michael Steiner today took up the 'Rice Bucket Challenge', donating rice to more than 300 families residing in a slum here, days after Indian netizens came up with this desi version of ALS ice-bucket challenge.

"Many people are taking up the ice bucket challenge but here in India, it is not about ice but rice. The idea is that the society still accepts the fact that there are poor people and we have to change that," Steiner said.

Around 392 families residing in Vivekanand Camp in Chanakyapuri area here queued up to receive a bucket filled with five kilograms of rice each.

Rachna, a differently-abled woman, was happy that such initiatives were being undertaken to support those in need.

"Ration is something we really require to feed children. This is very helpful," said Rachna.

Organised by the German Embassy in collaboration with NGO 'Chintan', the idea was to raise awareness among people to help in eradicating poverty.

"Of course, this is just a gesture. Unfortunately, our society still accepts poverty as unavoidable and we have to change that," Steiner said.

Reiterating that poverty can be eradicated by a sustained will, the ambassador said slum rehabilitation by providing housing to everyone in India is the need of the hour. The ambassador also announced that another slum upgrading project, to which Germany wants to dedicate Rs 27 crore, is being prepared.

The original ALS ice bucket challenge had been designed to raise funds for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease and motor neurone disease (MND). Days after the campaign went viral, netizens took up the Indianised version 'Rice Bucket Challenge', in line with the mantra of 'charity begins at home' and posted videos, pictures on social networking websites as they donated rice to the needy.

19:37   VIP security: Rijiju accorded 'Z', Doval upgraded to 'Z+'
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is the latest entrant to the VIP security club as he has been accorded a 'Z' category cover by the armed commandos of paramilitary CISF.

The Minister of State for Home will be secured by a special squad of about 20 specially trained commandos whenever he travels in the national capital region.

Sources said the junior Home Minister was brought under the security umbrella of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) after a threat analysis report from central security agencies recommended armed protection for him.

Plans are also afoot, sources said, to secure the Minister during his visits to Arunachal Pradesh, from where he was elected to Lok Sabha, by the same squad or through a contingent of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) already based in the north eastern state.

"No decision, however, has been taken on the security cover for the Minister outside Delhi," the sources said.

The Centre has also upgraded the security cover of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval from 'Z' to the top category of 'Z+' entailing over 35 commandos of the CISF.

The Centre has also changed the security deployment of Gujarat Congress President Arjun Modavadia, taking it away from the CISF to another paramilitary CRPF, under the 'X' category cover which entails four-five armed commandos.

The central government, through the Union Home Ministry, recently brought BJP President Amit Shah under 'Z+' category security of paramilitary force CRPF.

The question now is, will they they support the Congress or the BJP? Their displeasure is against the domination of media persons in AAP.

One AAP MP has said that the party is not structured but floats on a arrangements that are at best skeletal.

Kejriwal is well aware of these dissidents and the next 15 days is going to be crucial.

"We are in talks and we think that cleaning industrial pollutants from the river (Ganga) should be first priority," Yonatan said. Emphasising on the need to make Ganga rejuvenation a mass movement, Modi had yesterday said the first priority of the Namaami Gange mission should be to prevent fresh generation of pollutants.

12:21   Dangerous trend: Clearance without compliance
Minister of State for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar's answer in Parliament on August 13 on the reconstitution of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) is worth examining.

In reply to four questions by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Lok Sabha member M.B. Rajesh on the Board being recast without the mandatory number of non-government members and the reasons for violations, he blandly said this was done through a notification dated July 22.

While the Board was reconstituted, it did not have the five mandatory NGO representatives or the ten persons to be nominated by the Central government from among eminent conservationists, ecologists and environmentalists, as mandated by Section 5A of the Wildlife Protection Act. Besides, the notification only referred to the Standing Committee.

It was not surprising therefore that the Supreme Court on August 25 stayed the decisions of the diluted Standing Committee of the NBWL, after a petition challenged the constitution of the Board. Read

11:35   Kejriwal: Lt governor batting for BJP
The Supreme Court has refused to take on record the Aam Aadmi Party's affidavit on a sting operation alleging that Delhi BJP MLA Sher Singh Dagar tried to bribe their MLAs in a bid to help his party form government in Delhi.

The SC says some progress seems to be made on govt formation in Delhi and asks the Centre to take a decision swiftly. The Centre informs the SC about the L-G's letter to the President on govt formation, following which the SC defers the case till Oct 10.  The government says it hasn't received any communication from the President on government formation.

Arvind Kejriwal meanwhile says Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has been "batting for the BJP".

Kejriwal's claims comes a day after BJP chief Amit Shah said that the party should form the government in Delhi as it has the required number of members, as per news reports.

AAP had earlier met President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him to not allow Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to invite BJP to form a government in Delhi.

11:27   SC notice to CBI director
JUST IN: The Supreme Court has asked CBI director Ranjit Sinha to file  a response in the coal scam case in 10 days and post the matter for further hearing on September 19.

This comes after SC advocate Prashant Bhushan filed a plea to  remove Sinha from investigating the coal scam.

The SC notice to the CBI director comes after Bhushan points out that accused in the coal scam met Sinha as per records in his visitors' logbook at his residence. Bhushan tells the court that there is a record of meetings in Sinha's visitors' book.

The bench took on record the original register of entry list/guest list at the CBI director's residence which was handed over by advocate Prashant Bhushan in a sealed envelope, yesterday.

Bhushan submitted that some unknown person had turned up at his residence last night and gave him the documents. He pleaded before the court to take the documents on record as these may be destroyed.

The prominent question in the mind of everyone is who maintained this diary at Sinhas residence. Sinha has already called the diary dubious and says it was not maintained at his instructions.

Sinha admits that he met several people mentioned in the diary, but it is dubious because it doesnt include many names of the people who visited him.

11:05   'Modi visit to expand, deepen US-India strategic partnership'
President Barack Obama looks forward to welcoming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 29-30, the White House announced, saying their talks will "expand and deepen the US-India strategic partnership."

"The two leaders will discuss a range of issues of mutual interest in order to expand and deepen the US-India strategic partnership," White House Press Secretary said in a statement on Modi's first visit to Washington since his landmark electoral victory in May.

"They will discuss ways to accelerate economic growth, bolster security cooperation, and collaborate in activities that bring long-term benefits to both countries and the world," he said.

"They will also focus on regional issues, including current developments in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, where India and the United States can work together with partners towards a positive outcome."

"The President looks forward to working with the Prime Minister to fulfil the promise of the US-India strategic partnership for the benefit of both our citizens and the world," the White House statement.

The US had shunned Modi for nearly a decade with the previous Bush administration revoking his visa in 2005 for his alleged role or inaction during the 2002 Gujarat riots as the state's chief minister.

The Obama administration was late in reaching out to Modi in the run up to India's parliamentary elections, but Obama was among the first leaders to greet him after his historic win and invite him to the White House.

The spokesman said news of the attack was kept under wraps because of strategic requirements. Operations are being carried out to capture more terrorists, the spokesman told Dawn news channel.

The spokesman only confirmed the incident after Geo News channel reported that an attack took place on Saturday morning but the Pakistan Navy had kept the incident a secret.

According to Geo News, two naval officers at the Naval dockyard were involved in aiding the terrorists whose number is yet to be confirmed. But a security source confirmed that the target of the attackers were Pakistan naval ships in the dockyard which is located in West Wharf.

On June 8, ten terrorists stormed the old Karachi airport terminal building in which at least 29 people were killed apart from the attackers.
