22:10   26 years! Veena Malik shocked over her blasphemy conviction
Pakistani actress Veena Malik today expressed shock and disbelief over a Pakistani anti-terrorism court sentencing her and her husband to 26 years in prison for alleged blasphemy.

"26 years! Come on. 26 years is a lifetime...But I have faith in higher courts in Pakistan. When the final verdict comes, it will do justice to me. Nothing bad is going to happen," said Malik.

The court in Gilgit-Baltistan region yesterday sentenced 30-year-old Malik along with the owner of the country's biggest media group to 26 years in prison for broadcasting a show it said was blasphemous.

But the order is unlikely to be implemented because verdicts by courts in the region do not apply to the rest of the country, Gulf News reported.

The four people convicted were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1.3 million, sell their properties and surrender their
passports, according to a copy of the court order.

Malik feels that such a verdict is an attempt to tarnish her image.

She claimed that such a sentence would undo years of good work such as helping earthquake victims in Pakistan.

"How could they pass a judgement against a woman who just delivered a baby through C-section? I dreamt of building a hospital in Pakistan and do other good work. This sentence is ridiculous and I am innocent. I feel emotionally broken."

20:51   India to develop tourist circuit tracing Huen Tsang's travels
India today said it plans to develop a tourist circuit tracing Chinese scholar Huen Tsang's travels during his nine-year stay in the country in the seventh century.

Plans are afoot to launch the tourist circuit to promote people-to-people contacts between the two nations, India's Ambassador to China Ashok K Kantha said during an interaction with a 100-member delegation of youths from India at the Indian Embassy here. India and China have already released an encyclopedia on their age-old cultural contacts, tracing back their history to over 2,000 years, starting from the visit of Huen Tsang (known as Xuan Zang in Chinese) to India in the 7th century to bring Buddhist scriptures to China.

Huen Tsang (602 AD-664 AD) travelled to India on foot to seek Buddhist sutras and believed to have brought about 660 Sanskrit texts with him and translated them into Chinese. He along with another Chinese monk Fa-Hien (Faxian) paved the way for spread of Buddhism in China.

19:05   No one physically carries the black money abroad: Jaitley
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley responding to the black money debate in the Rajya Sabha.

Ten takeaways from what he has just said.

1. We took over half done job from UPA. We want the black money to be brought back. It is everyone's wish that money siphoned off be brought back.

2. Issue is not whether to disclose these names or not, issue is when to disclose it.

3. Govt has identified holders of 427 accounts abroad, notices have been sent to them.

4. Out of these HSBC cases (627), we have been able to trace and identify about 427, we are giving notices to most of them.

5. At least 250 account holders have admitted to having accounts abroad. In the next few weeks, more prosecution cases will be filed; once the cases go for prosecution, names will become public.

6. The offence is committed in India and the money is Indian. The evidence is outside Indian shores. No government can march its police or investigating officers to another country. There is a prescribed procedure.

7. If we disclose the names publicly in a press conference without evidence, that will be a one-day thrill.

8. UPA government didn't want Supreme Court to give any orders on this issue. Forming SIT was our first decision.

9. In this age, no one physically carries the black money abroad. Some take it through Hawala and other ways.

10. Names will become public when prosecution begins.

The Pakistani PM has said the ball is in India's court because Delhi cancelled talks earlier this year after the Pakistani envoy consulted Kashmiri separatists ahead of a scheduled dialogue between the Foreign Secretaries of both countries.

The way Pak may be cajoled to come around is at an informal retreat outside Kathmandu tomorrow.

Other countries, including India and Sri Lanka, have been strongly pitching for strengthening the people-to-people contact and movement of goods in the region.

02:22   Why India wants to ban sale of loose cigarettes
Indias ministry of health is set to prohibit the sale of loose cigarettes, which would be a big blow to tobacco companies because an overwhelming 70% of the cigarettes sold in India are loose.

The proposal to ban the sale of single sticks was made by an internal panel to the healthy ministry. The ministry has accepted the recommendations of the committee and a draft note for cabinet has been circulated for inter ministerial consultation, Health Minister J P Nadda said in a statement in the upper house on Tuesday.

Many smokers in India, including minors and students, prefer buying loose cigarettes because they are much more affordable than the whole pack.

The government increased the excise duty on cigarettes in the range of 11% and 72%, depending on the length of the stick, in this years budget. Despite this hike, cigarettes are still much cheaper in India compared to Western countries.

The paintings are reproduced, in original size and color, on ceramic panels that dont fade over time.

This marks the first time that BlackBerry has gone head-to-head with Apple since the Canadian firm launched a turnaround plan last year aimed at stemming massive losses.

The Passport was launched in September.

Named for its approximate size to the travel document, the phone was designed to win back key corporate users after BlackBerry was effectively knocked out of the highly competitive consumer smartphone market dominated by Apple and Samsung.

Investors seemed pleased, pushing up the Waterloo, Ontario-based company's share price slightly in morning trading.

02:21   Syria air strikes on IS 'capital' kill 63 people
A string of Syrian regime air strikes on the Islamic State group's self-proclaimed capital Raqa today killed at least 63 people, more than half of them civilians, a monitor said.

The air strikes were the deadliest by President Bashar al-Assad's air force against Raqa since the Sunni extremist IS seized control of the city last year.

"Among the 63 killed were at least 36 civilians," said Rami Abdel Rahman of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"There were also 20 unidentified victims who could be civilians or jihadists, as well as the disfigured remains of at least seven other people," he said.

The director of the Britain-based monitoring group said previously that "most of the casualties were caused by two consecutive air strikes" on Raqa's main industrial zone.

"The first strike came, residents rushed to rescue the wounded, and then the second raid took place," Abdel Rahman, whose group relies on a network of sources on the ground in Syria for its information, said.

Amateur video footage distributed by activists in Raqa showed several bloodied bodies laid out on a street near an apparent bombing site, as an ambulance rushed to the scene.

Aid workers in red overalls bearing the Red Crescent symbol could be seen placing the corpses into white body bags.
