The terrorists who attacked a police station and an Army cantonment 20 km apart, killing 12 people in Jammu and Kashmir this morning, are suspected to have crossed over into India only last night or this morning.

Despite that, and in what points to a serious security lapse, they managed to make their way from Jandi village on the border with Pakistan to Hiranagar in Kathua district of Jammu, where they attacked a police station and killed cops, before hijacking a truck and driving to the Samba district to attack an armoured corp unit. All in a span of about two hours.

Intelligence sources have said that units in the Jammu area had been warned that fidayeen or suicide attackers could launch a strike and yet the three heavily-armed terrorists seem to have entered the Army cantonment in Samba with ease.

The CCTV footage shows the Personal Security Officers, allegedly from the Uttar Pradesh Police, beating up the chemist.

The chemist was beaten up after an argument over the phone between the chemist and a woman believed to be related to the SP leader.

Police say the chemist has not lodged a complaint. The chemist, however, claims that he is being pressurised to hush up the matter. The chemist claims that police was unwilling to file an FIR.

02:48   Iran hails Obama's UN speech
A senior Iranian official welcomed the "moderate and respectful tone" of US President Barack Obama's speech to the UN General Assembly, as newspapers hailed a new path for the Islamic republic.

"It seems a new climate has been created with the rise to power of a new Iranian government, and all international parties are trying to react to this new climate,"said Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi.

"For example, Barack Obama has tried to use a more moderate and respectful tone," he said, quoted by ISNA news agency.

"But no doubt what's important in foreign policy are actions," he said. If the world's major powers "respect Iran's nuclear rights under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, I think reaching a solution is imaginable."

02:48   International forensic teams join Kenyan mall carnage probe
Kenyan and foreign forensics teams scoured the wreckage of a Nairobi shopping mall today for bodies and clues after a four-day siege by Islamist gunmen left 67 dead and dozens more missing.

Rescuers and investigators wore face masks and some soldiers wrapped scarves around their mouths because of an overpowering stench inside the Westgate centre, once the capital's most upmarket mall. A large part of the complex has collapsed after heavy explosions and a fierce fire.

Across Kenya, flags flew at half mast at the start of three days of official mourning.

Somalia's Al-Shebab rebels claimed on Twitter that 137 hostages they had seized all died, figures impossible to verify and higher than the number of people officially registered as missing. The Al-Qaeda-linked group also accused Kenyan troops of using "chemical agents" and explosives to end the stand-off.
