A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang raped by three people inside a car near Pardeshipura intersection in Indore, police said today.

A television mechanic, identified as Suraj Yadav, 25, has been arrested in this connection, they added.

Delhi police is likely to file a charge-sheet in the Indian Premier League spot fixing case on Monday, naming underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, three Rajasthan Royals players and several others.

"More than 30 people, including Dawood Ibrahim and three Rajasthan Royals players -- S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan -- will be named in the charge-sheet," said a senior Delhi police officer.    

"The charge-sheet will be filed on Monday," he said.

A video showing the Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir Bashiruddin Ahmad enjoying music, an act he termed as forbidden by Islam, went viral today, drawing sharp reactions online.        

The Grand Mufti is seen in the video in the company of several other people, including women, at a gathering where a local artist is singing ghazals while playing harmonium.        

Ahmad drew widespread criticism for his presence at the musical event as he had issued a Fatwa against the first all-girls rock band of Kashmir, saying singing is "unislamic".

The Gorka Janmukti Morcha today called for a 72-hour bandh in the Darjeeling hills from July 29.        

GJM chief Bimal Gurung, while addressing a party gathering at Kalimpong, announced the 72-hour bandh in Darjeeling hills from July 29.        

Gurung asked the youths and other people in the hills to get ready for a prolonged agitation in the hills for Gorkhaland.

21:48   Jharkhand CM takes on opposition
Taking exception to the opposition's charges like "murder of democracy" during the formation of his government, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren today called upon the opposition to refrain from the politics of opportunism.        

"Both outside and inside the assembly, several queries were raised about the government formation (on July 13), even (some said) 'murder of democracy'," Soren said in his speech to the House.       

"I would only tell my opposition friends that the House is there for debate, politics should be principle-based and not politics of opportunism," Soren said.

Targeting the Centre, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today again alleged that it was trying to interfere in the affairs of the state through its agencies and reiterated that there was a conspiracy to dismiss her government, which was running well.        

The chief minister, during the one-day special session to pass the budget, did not clarify which forces were conspiring towards the dismissal of her government.

20:50   PM calls UPA meet to discuss Telangana creation
Anita Katyal reports: Before the Congress Working Committee takes a final call on the formation of a separate state of Telangana,  Prime Minister Manmohan Singh  will  seek the consent of allies next week at a specially convened meeting of the UPA Coordination Committee. 

The party's Working Committee will meet subsequently  to endorse the decision already taken by the Congress Core group. 

The dates for the two meetings are yet to be formalised but they will be convened before the opening of the monsoon session of Parliament on August 5.

Criticising the statement by BJP leader Chandan Mitra -- that the Bharat Ratna be taken back from Amartya Sen -- former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today said this could not be done.        

"It is a shocking comment. Is Bharat Ratna bestowed on someone as a favour? How can this be taken back?" Chatterjee told reporters.        

"Everybody knows how much the recipient of the honour deserves it. It is conferred on him by the country, by the people of the country in appreciation," Chatterjee said.

20:25   Midday meal deaths: BJP suggests new scheme
BJP Youth wing president Anurag Thakur today wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, expressing concern over the mid-day meal deaths in Bihar, and suggested that a new scheme be launched under which weekly or monthly rations are given to families of the students.        

Thakur has pointed out in his letter that teachers should be removed from "non-academic work" like cooking of mid-day meals and focus on their primary job, teaching.        

"It was not surprising that three lakh school teachers in Bihar had called for a boycott of the mid-day meal scheme," he said.

The BJP today alleged that although there was enough evidence against former railways minister Pawan Bansal in the cash-for-job scam, he had been only named as an witness in the case.        

"Whatever evidence is on record is sufficient to name Bansal as an accused.     Rather surprisingly, he has been made a prosecution witness by the CBI," said Satya Pal Jain, former BJP MP and the chairman of the party's national committee on legal and Election Commission issues.

19:33   Congress seeks Shivraj Singh Chauhan's resignation
Accusing Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan of supporting corruption, the Congress today demanded his resignation and the sacking of two ministers whose names are listed in mining barons' diaries, which contained details of alleged bribes being paid to them.        

"The chief minister has no right to remain in office anymore. He should resign immediately on moral grounds. He should also immediately sack Mineral Resources Minister Rajendra Shukla and Technical Education and Public Relations Minister Laxmikant Sharma," Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh assembly Ajay Singh told reporters.

He said it was sad that Chauhan was silent about acting against the two ministers.

19:30   BJP seeks greater protection for Sangh leaders in Tamil Nadu
BJP workers today appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for greater security for Hindu leaders given the cases of murders of senior Sangh Parivar functionaries in the state.        

"We are not sure how many more (alleged killers) are there and whether they are (acting) in groups or not. We appeal to the CM to strengthen the police protection given to Hindu leaders," state BJP president Pon Radhakrishnan told reporters.

False cases are the reasons behind the labelling of Delhi as the 'rape capital' of India, a city court  has held while acquitting a 75-year-old man of the charge of sexually assaulting his maid after the woman turned hostile.        

The court said after the December 16 gangrape of a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus in Delhi, it lead to the creation of an atmosphere that "the mere statement of a lady that she has been raped came to be taken as gospel truth, the accused was arrested and chargesheeted".

Two acid bottles were seized today from outside the private residence of Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari in Chandigarh by police which said they were investigating all angles including foul play.            

"Four bottles were found outside the boundary wall of the minister's residence in Sector 19. While two were empty, two other bottles were filled with acid," Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar said.

Noting that India continued to be the second fastest growing economy in the world after China, Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said people should not be worried about the current slow down and expressed hope of achieving six per cent growth this fiscal.

"People should remember India continues to be the second fastest growing economy after China. Even China's growth which was at 10 per cent has come down to seven per cent now, while our growth has slid to five per cent from nine per cent," he said at a bank function.

"Economic slowdown is there in all the countries. When there is slow growth rate in the world, India cannot remain unaffected," he said inaugurating the 2110th branch of the Indian Bank in this small town in his Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency.

The Uttar Pradesh public service commission today cancelled results of examinations, declared on the basis of a controversial reservation policy, evoking sharp reactions from pro-reservation students who went on the rampage accusing the ruling Samajwadi Party of "betrayal".   

In an official release, the UPPSC said results of"combined civil service/upper subordinate examinations (mains) declared on July 04, 2013" stood cancelled and "revised results" would be declared "at the earliest". The commission said that the decision was taken at a meeting held yesterday.

There will be a strike and buses and trains will not ply. No traffic will move into Hyderabad. By early September the people of Telangana will march towards Hyderabad. "Let the police fire on us, let there be curfew in entire Telangana," they told Rahul.

"We are in favour of the food security bill in principle. We are not against it. Poor people should get food at subsidised rates. Reports our Delhi correspondent: The cabinet secretariat has set up two special cells in the Union home ministry to monitor the flow of foreign analysts coming to India to study the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. So far 28 groups have arrived and another 50 are expected to come here by early next year. Indian elections are a treated as a case study for foreign university students. For them its a challenge to study 543 parliamentary constituencies and over 150 political parties. According to the the government, these students report to universities or to their respective country's intelligence agencies. Are these students funded by adversary countries to know more inside details of our electoral process?

After Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh has criticised the Planning Commission for it's definition of poverty.

Digvijay tweeted this morning, "I have always failed to understand the Planning Commission criteria for fixing poverty line. It is too abstract, can't be same for all areas."

"First indicator of poverty is malnourishment and anaemia in the family which is easily measurable. Can't we have that as a criteria?" said another tweet from  Singh.

At least 40 people were killed when twin suicide bombings ripped through a town in northwest Pakistan's restive tribal belt on Friday in a sudden surge in violence against the minority Shia community.

State-run Radio Pakistan said that at least 40 people were killed and over 100 injured in the bombings, which occurred in a span of a few minutes in the central market of Parachinar town in Kurram Agency, one of seven tribal districts where Taliban militants are fighting government forces.

An intelligence official said that both attackers used explosive-rigged motorbikes in the attacks to cause maximum damage.

PTI reports: Challenging the method used by the Planning Commission to calculate poverty, Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said a family of five could not live on Rs 5,000 a month.

"If the Planning Commission said those who live above Rs 5,000 a month are not at poverty line, obviously there is something wrong with the definition of poverty in this country. How can anybody live at Rs 5,000?" Sibal questioned at a programme in Kolkata.

Earlier in the week, the Commission had said that for a family of five, the all India poverty line in terms of consumption expenditure would amount to Rs 4,080 per month in rural areas and Rs 5,000 per month in urban areas.

The driver of the train that derailed killing 78 people has refused to answer initial questions, Spanish police say.

Francisco Jose Garzon Amo -- hurt in Wednesday's crash -- is under guard in hospital.

He is suspected of driving too fast round a bend. Reports say the train was travelling at more than double the speed limit at the time of the crash.

The case should now "proceed to a judicial process", the police added. Spain is in three days of mourning.

The police chief in the Galicia region, Jaime Iglesias, said earlier that the driver would be questioned "as a suspect for a crime linked to the cause of the accident".

02:54   US set to sell weapons worth $2bn to Iraq
The Pentagon has informed the US Congress of a possible sale of $2 billion worth of military equipment to Iraq, officials said.

Lawmakers have 30 days to raise any objections to the plan, which consists of three contracts.

The first includes 12 Bell 412 EP helicopters and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support totalling an estimated $300 million. 

"This equipment will provide the Iraqi Air Force with a search and rescue capability critical to developing a mature Air Force," the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, or DSCA, said in a statement.

The second contract, worth an estimated $900 million, is for 50 M1135 Stryker Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicles. 

The sale would provide the Iraqi army "with reliable capabilities for early warning of contamination by radiological, biological, and chemical material," according to the DSCA.

Abu Baseer, a purported spokesman of Ansarul Mujahideen militant group, claimed responsibility for the attacks in a message to the media. 

"Shias are enemies of Islam and we will continue to attack them," Baseer said. 

The first explosion went off in a busy market and it was was followed by another on School Road in Parachinar. Both blasts occurred near Shia mosques, witnesses said.

Union Human Resource Development Ministry has cleared the appointment of Prof Partha Pratim Chakraborty as the Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT, Kharagpur have been informed about the decision of Union Human Resource Development Ministry that Prof Chakraborty be given the apppointment as Director of IIT, Kharagpur, sources said. 

The chairman would give him the appointment either on Saturday or Sunday, officials said. 

The faculty members and a large number of alumni of IIT Kharagpur took out a silent protest march in Kolkata on July
20 to demand immediate appointment of Prof Chakrabarti as the institute's Director.

The Board of Governors of IIT, Kharagpur cleared Chakraborty's name of any wrongdoing after carefully examining a case where his name was involved. His appointment was pending Central Vigilance Commission's clearance, officials said.

With incessant rain raising water level in two major rivers, Odisha government has asked collectors of four northern districts to keep a vigil on the situation.

Due to heavy downpour for last two days, flood water of river Budhabalang submerged paddy fields under Bangiriposi block in Mayurbhanj district and about 200 families in ward number 7 of Baripada Municipality area were shifted to safe places.
