18:54   Would rather face jail than death sentence: Gilani

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani today said he would rather go to jail for committing contempt of court than violate the Constitution by acting on the Supreme Court's ultimatum to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Gilani's remarks at two public events in Bahawalpur region of Punjab province marked an escalation in the standoff between the PPP-led government and the Supreme Court, which has been pushing the premier to revive cases of alleged money laundering against the President in Switzerland. "If I write (to the Swiss authorities), then I violate the Constitution because parliament has given the President immunity in Pakistan and abroad.

18:28   ATF price hike tonight, will air fares rise?

Just in: State-owned oil firms to hike jet fuel (ATF) price by 2 per cent with effect from midnight tonight. This is the third time it's been hiked since November. But for a one-off marginal reduction in mid-October, ATF prices have been on the climb since September. IOC and other state retailers, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum, had on October 1 and September 16 and raised jet fuel prices by 2.5 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively, as imports became costlier due to fall in rupee against the U.S. dollar. Jet fuel makes up for 40 per cent of an airlines' operating cost and the steep hike in prices will raise burden on the cash-strapped airlines.

No immediate comment was available from airlines on the impact of the price hike on passenger fares.

India Real Time happened to be there and, just for fun, we grabbed his copy.

16:50   ED summons Dayanidhi Maran in Aircel-Maxis deal

The CBI alleged that Dayanidhi Maran who was Telecom Minister between 2004 and 2007 in the UPA-I government had deliberately delayed the licences to Aircel and showed undue favour to Malaysia-based Maxis. In return, investments were made by the company in Sun TV.

It was alleged that Maran "armtwisted' Aircel owner C. Sivasankaran to sell his stake to the Maxis group of Malaysia. Chennai-based Aircel was applying with the Department of Telecommunications for UAS licences from March 2004 onwards. Mr. Sivasankaran who was already quizzed by the CBI officials claimed that irrelevant issues were raised in order to delay the award of licences.

16:06   The real reason why Mamata wants Trivedi sacked

Dinesh Trivedi's so-called rebellion has nothing to do with the railway budget; it has nothing to do with his proposal to hike passenger fares. Mamata Banerjee has sacked Trivedi because she doesn't trust him. It is as simple as that. This is the story of the leader losing faith in his junior. She was suspicious, always, of his closeness to the Congress and he gave ample reasons to make her go mad.

Today there are 35 cases against him, out of which 14 were filed after incurring Mayawati's wrath, although he had even earlier been charged under the Gangster Act and almost all the sections of IPC. The lake spread cross 35 bighas in Beti and Bhadari is the stuff of horrifying and mysterious legend and folklore among the people in Pratapgarh and Kunda.

If the stories  are to be believed, crocodiles were kept in the lake and anyone opposing the feudals became a meal for the crocodiles. The government has now declared it as Ambedkar Sanctuary.

13:11   Omar supports Trivedi: We take populism to ridiculous levels

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who supported the hike in railway fares, today said he would not mind being sacked for doing the right thing.

"If I had to be sacked, I'd rather be sacked for doing the right thing," he wrote on micro-blogging site twitter in reference to demand for removal of Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi by his own party Trinamool Congress.

Omar is among the very few politicians who have supported the hike in train fares proposed by Trivedi in his maiden railway budget tabled in the Lok Sabha yesterday. "We take populism to ridiculous levels. I genuinely believe people would happily accept the modest hike if safety and quality of service are better," the NC leader said.

"Populism will destroy the Indian railways. Then where will the 'aam aadmi' go?" he asked. Omar had words of sympathy for Trivedi, wishing him well in whatever he does. "What ever Dinesh bhai does, I wish him well. He's a good and decent person and we shared some laughs at the Kolkata
