Dinesh Trivedi resigns, Mukul Roy to be new rly minister

Today promises to be a day of political twists and turns for the Congress-led ruling United Progressive Alliance.

Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has sent in his resignation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. His decision to step down comes after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee gave him marching orders on Wednesday night.

Banerjee was furious about Trivedi's proposal, in the railway budget presented on Wednesday, to hike passenger fares for the first time in ten years.

TMC leader Mukul Roy is likely to replace Trivedi as the railway minister.
