12:22   Modi meets Sri Lanka's Sirisena, to dicuss fishermen issue
Sri Lanka's new President Maithripala Sirisena who is in India for a four-day visit meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House seeking a new beginning in bilateral ties that took a hit during the rule of his predecessor.

The Sri Lankan president and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their talks are likely to deliberate on all major issues such as devolution of power to the Tamil community and the sticky fishermen issue.

63-year-old Sirisena, who had dethroned Mahinda Rajapaksa from his 10-year rule after a bitter Presidential poll on January 9, will hold talks with the Indian leadership today on the entire gamut of bilateral ties including ways to further enhance cooperation and the peace and reconciliation process in the island nation.

According to presidential advisors, the Lankan president is desirous of making a new beginning in the Indo-Lanka relations after bilateral ties suffered under Rajapaksa over India's backing to US-moved resolutions at the UN rights body over alleged war crimes. The Rajapaksa regime was also said to have a pro-China tilt.

"We will be making a new beginning with India,' acting government spokesman and Minister Lakshman Kiriella said in Colombo. Sirisena has already indicated that he wants to have a closer relationship with India and chose it for his first foreign visit.

12:11   NCP 'Naturally Corrupt Party' becomes Not So Corrupt Party for Modi!
Congress leader Digvijay Singh today took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the recent bonhomie with Nationalist Congress Partt chief Sharad Pawar, alleging that it was "another U turn" by Modi who had not long back dubbed NCP as "naturally corrupt party".

"NCP 'Naturally Corrupt Party' becomes Not So Corrupt Party for Modi! Another U Turn ! Narendrabhai continue making such U Turns," Singh said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Modi had shared the stage with Pawar in Maharashtra's Baramati on Saturday, leading to speculation on the prospect of the BJP and the NCP cosying up after a bitter election campaign last year, where both sides minced no words while attacking each other.

While PM Modi had attacked Pawar during Maharashtra elections last year and called the NCP "Naturally Corrupt Party," this visit sparked off a new bonhomie where the PM sang a different tune.

Calling Pawar an experienced leader, Modi had said, "I speak to Sharad Pawar more than two times a month. Sharad Pawar has always thought of farmers' plight."

10:02   Shiv Sena taunts ally BJP, says backing Bihar's Manjhi a sin
Firing yet another salvo at ally BJP, Shiv Sena today taunted it over the issue of supporting Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi saying backing him would be a "sin" as it would be an endorsement of "black era in politics".

"Nobody should indulge in this sin of backing for political interest someone who has publicly said he accepts commission," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece Saamana said.

"Nitish Kumar has the backing of 130 legislators and yet he (Manjhi) is trying to get the BJP support. The BJP is pitting Manjhi against Nitish Kumar," it said.

The Sena's latest attack on the BJP comes two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NCP chief Sharad Pawar met at the latter's home turf Baramati. The NCP had announced unconditional outside support to the BJP when it emerged single largest party in October 15 assembly polls.

Earlier, the Shiv Sena had said the "broom'"wielding" the AAP had reduced the BJP to "dirt" in the Delhi elections and virtually demanded that Modi accept the blame for it. The Sena said that "nobody should justify the current goings on in Bihar politics"

08:46   After AAP win, PM Modis takes a dig at parties promising free power
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at pre-election promises to reduce power and water bills, saying he wondered how such promises could be made in states which were dependent on electricity from outside.

"During every election, political parties promise free power. People need to think about these promises," said PM Modi on Sunday at a conference on renewable energy in Delhi. And the cost of water, he said, was "basically due to the cost of power".

The prime minister's comments came a day after the Aam Aadmi Party government took oath -- the party had won 67 of Delhi's 70 assembly seats last week, leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party to mop up the remaining three.

A chunk of its votes came from the economically backward section, which is now waiting for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to deliver on his promises regarding cheaper electricity and free water.

Delhi has a power demand of about 5,000 MW and is largely dependent on other states to meet its requirements. "I don't want to make any adverse comment on the Prime Minister," said senior AAP leader Ashutosh. He said he would only request the PM to help make electricity affordable, "because that will do a lot of good for the people of Delhi".
