Popular Odiya television actress Pralipta Priyadarshini Samal alias Jessy was today arrested by Odisha Police on the charge of instigating her male colleague Ranjit Patnaik alias Raja to commit suicide.

She was produced before the Balasore Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Babita Das who sent her to judicial custody for 14 days.

"Death of Raja was a case of suicide. The actor committed suicide due to instigation or abetment. We found that deceased actor's friend had taunted him in connection with his professional failure," Balasore SP Niti Sekhar told reporters.

The SP said Jessy allegedly scolded and offended Raja which forced him to commit suicide.

The two had gone to a musical programme on February 6 at Khaira area in Balasore district where Jessy was invited. Raja, though not invited had accompanied Jessy to the event.

When another actor Chandan, who was slated to perform at the event with Jessy but did not turn up, the organisers requested Raja to perform at the event.

After the show, Raja was paid only Rs 2,000 while Jessy got Rs 27,000.

"The woman actor verbally abused the victim over his capability and self respect. The altercation between the duo reached a flashpoint and Raja told the driver to stop the car," the SP said, adding "he had got out of the car and climbed over the parapet of the bridge and jumped over leading to his death".

21:51   Former UN chief Boutros Boutros-Ghali dead at 93
UN Security Council announces that former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali has died. He was 93.

According to his official UN biography, Boutros-Ghali taught international relations and law at Cairo University from 1949 to 1977, during which time he was also part of the Central Committee and Political Bureau of the Arab Socialist Union.

Between 1977 and 1991, he held several top positions in Egypt's Foreign Ministry.

Then, in January 1992, Boutros-Ghali took over as the United Nations' secretary-general. He led the world body in that capacity for the next five years, a time marked by crises in Rwanda, Angola and the former Yugoslavia.

He sought a second term, only to be rebuffed after the United States -- as a member of the world body's Security Council -- vetoed his bid. At the time, Washington criticized him for refusing to cut the United Nations' budget.

20:45   Contempt plea in SC against jailed JNUSU Prez, SAR Geelani
A plea, seeking contempt action against JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, former DU lecturer SAR Geelani and few others, was today filed in Supreme Court on the ground that they allegedly termed execution of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru as "judicial killing".

The contempt plea refers to the Apex court verdict, pronounced on August 4, 2005 in the case, by which Afzal Guru was handed down death penalty for being part of the conspiracy in the attack on the Parliament House.

"The so-called cultural event's pamphlets spoke about the judicial killing of Afzal Guru. The main topic of the 'cultural event' organised was judicial killing of Afzal Guru which outright tantamount to criminal contempt as the Respondents are calling the judges of the Apex Court as killers who have been projected to have committed judicial killing of Afzal Guru," the plea, filed by Pune-based lawyer Vineet Dhanda, said.

The plea further said, "Afzal and Yakub Memon were no martyrs as projected by the group of students of JNU. The Supreme Court has already passed a detailed judgement in both cases after giving due consideration as per law after going through the evidence."

20:32   Sheena Bora case: CBI files charge sheet against Peter Mukerjea
Sheena Bora was killed as her relationship with Rahul was disapproved of by the latter's father Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani both of whom were part of the plot to murder her, CBI said in its charge sheet filed in a court here today against the former media baron.

The agency submitted the charge sheet, running into 500 pages and listing 52 witnesses, before Additional Metropolitan Magistrate R V Adone.

"We have mentioned in the charge sheet that the process of separating Sheena and Rahul had started since 2009 and as they did not budge, the duo (Indrani and Peter) planned to kill her," a CBI official said.

Peter, whose wife Indrani is the prime accused in the case, was arrested on November 19 for his alleged role in the murder conspiracy. He was in CBI custody for two weeks.

On November 19, CBI had filed a charge sheet against Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and former driver Shyamvar Rai for murdering Sheena and disposing of her body.

According to the official, the charge sheet filed today did not mention details of the financial transactions and the agency is likely to submit another charge sheet in future.

As per the charge sheet, Indrani and Peter were unhappy with the relationship between Sheena and Rahul and they had told their friend Pritul Sanghvi that 'this relationship was not correct'.

20:29   Jokes shouldn't be targeted at racial groups: Sikhs to SC
No jokes should be targeted towards any racial group, Sikh community representatives today told the Supreme Court which agreed with its suggestion that instead of an "unenforceable judical order", there was a need for sensitising the society from the formative stages.

Asking various petitioners from the community including the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee to come up with suggestions in six weeks, a bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur said it would examine the framing of guidelines to stop circulation of racist or communal jokes in the cyber world.

Senior advocates from the community, A P S Ahluwalia and R S Suri, said there was a need to sensitise students not to circulate jokes that portray any community or sociological group as a "butt of jokes".

They said the community was against making and circulating of jokes on Sikhs, Biharis and calling people from Northeastern states by a particular term.

"There was a need for a change in orientation. May be time has come to look at a bigger and larger picture," Suri said before the bench, which also comprised Justices R Banumathi and U U Lalit.

19:15   Delhi police 'deaf and dumb': AAP questions inaction
Attacking the Delhi Police over its inaction when journalists and JNU students were being thrashed in a court complex yesterday, AAP today dubbed them "deaf and dumb", and asked why no action was taken against BJP MLA O P Sharma for his alleged involvement in the assault.

The party also questioned why the police was not checking the video in which JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who has been arrested on sedition charges, was talking in favour of following the Constitution.

"The Delhi Police has become deaf and dumb since yesterday. It has taken no action against BJP MLA O P Sharma who is seen assaulting JNU students and journalists and terrorising them," AAP leader Sanjay Singh said.

Yesterday, groups of lawyers had beaten up journalists and JNU students and teachers in the Patiala House court complex ahead of the hearing of sedition case registered against Kumar in connection with an event at the varsity last week to protest the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Delhi BJP MLA OP Sharma was also seen beating up a CPI activist. Earlier, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said the alleged negligence on the part of police is being probed and the guilty will face legal action. Singh also noted that those who raised anti-India slogans during the event have not been arrested yet and demanded an independent probe into who those people were.

Congress and CPM had little to say when finance minister Arun Jaitley showed a video on his mobile on the alleged hate speech and slogans by JNU students.

Leaders of many regional parties had condemned the JNU students who allegedly raised "aazadi-barbadi" slogans. Jaitley also told his captive audience (D Raja, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, the Modi government's mindset on Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh, who has been pulled up in a money laundering scam. Azad, who is Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha after the meeting went over to Jaitley and whispered something inaudible. The Congress was exposed in today's all-party meet, Naidu told the press later.

17:53   Former DU prof SAR Geelani gets 2-day police custody
Delhi court sends former Delhi University professor SAR Geelani, booked for sedition in connection with a Press Club event here, to two-day police custody.

Geelani was arrested early this morning on sedition and other charges for allegedly organising an event in support of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the Delhi Police has said. Geelani was acquitted in the Parliament attack case in 2003.

After he was detained late last night, he was questioned at the Parliament Street police station. A senior police officer said the case was registered after examining media clips of the event that was held at the Press Club on February 10.

Geelani's arrest comes amid a raging controversy over the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University's student's union president Kanhaiya Kumar on sedition charges.

Kumar was arrested for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans at a February 9 event at the campus which questioned the hanging of Afzal Guru three years ago.

16:20   Saying Afzal Guru ka conviction galat tha, is not sedition: Soli Sorabjee
Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee on the sedition charges against JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar. "If someone says 'Afzal Guru ka conviction galat tha' that's not sedition. Being critical of the government is not sedition, saying that Afzal Guru's execution was wrong is not sedition."

Terming the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar for sedition as "deplorable', eminent Sorabjee asked if his (Kumar's) words and actions really amounted to sedition. "What did he do? Did he merely shout slogans like 'Pakistan zindabad'? Arresting him for that? I mean that's deplorable. That is not sedition. Sedition, the Supreme Court has said, are the acts which have a tendency and intention to disturb law and order or incite violence. After all, it is a section which gives you life imprisonment, has very serious consequences. So the Supreme Court has construed it in that fashion and said it very clearly that even if you use words that vigorously criticise the government or comment on the actions of the government, that is not sedition. That is our law, that is how Section 124A was interpreted and upheld as constitutional by a Constitution Bench," said Sorabjee.

15:12   The Koh-i-Noor diamond is in Britain illegally. But it should still stay there
Since the Koh-i-Noor, or Mountain of Light, diamond was mined in India during the middle ages, maharajahs, shahs and princes have fought to possess it. The size of a hen's egg, it was of inestimable value. Nevertheless, an 18th-century Afghan queen, Wufa Begum, did her best to describe its worth: "If a strong man were to throw four stones, one north, one south, one east, one west, and a fifth stone up into the air, and if the space between them were to be filled with gold, all would not equal the value of the Koh-i-Noor."

The Koh-i-Noor has belonged to the British since 1849. It sits in the crown of the Queen consort and presumably if Charles becomes king, Camilla will wear it. Read

13:58   No slack for JNU please, every generation is anti-establishment but never against country
We were students, too. Nothing extraordinary or magical about it. These JNU kids are not some new, improved product. We also were anti-establishment and happily loathed the system. We also protested and had rallies and sang songs from Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan and had huge posters of Che Guevera on the walls of our rooms and batted for Fidel Castro. We knew what it was to be blowin' in the wind and we believed fervently a change would come. We read Eldridge Cleaver's Soul on Ice, it was our almanac, and from Berkeley to Woodstock to the fight against corruption in Bihar, we also swayed in solidarity.

We thought the government was the pits and was there only to ruin our happiness and be the boot on the neck. But never the country. There was a difference, always a difference.

13:55   Modi's mates, made in JNU
When BJP MP Maheish Girri labelled Jawaharlal Nehru University a "hub of treason" on Saturday amid the police crackdown on the campus, he was unwittingly belittling not just rivals but also key political, diplomatic, bureaucratic and education leaders of his own party's government. Many supporters of the arrest of JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and the imposition of sedition charges on multiple students from the university have over the past three days blamed the institution's intense student politics, frequently dominated by the Left.

13:31   JNU row echoes at meeting of political parties convened by PM
The escalating row over the JNU issue today found an echo at a meeting of political parties called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with opposition leaders speaking against the sedition case slapped on the arrested student leader and government asserting that slogans raised by students were "highly objectionable".

The government said it is open to debating the JNU row in Parliament during the upcoming Budget Session starting February 23 with Modi saying that it will address the concerns raised by the opposition.

Modi said during the meeting as opposition parties raised a host of issues that he was Prime minister not only of BJP but the entire country, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told the media after the over two-hour meeting.

Today's parleys were the first-ever meeting of political parties convened by Modi ahead of a Parliament session.

"We will respond to the issues raised by the opposition and address them... I hope the congenial mood here will be translated into action in Parliament," Modi told the meeting. Naidu said there was a general consensus that Parliament should run smoothly.

With BJP targeting Congress over its support to "anti-nationals" in the JNU row, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said his party "disassociates" with all such students who shouted slogans attacking India's unity and Constitution but insisted that there was no proof of sedition against Kanhaiya Kumar, the arrested JNU Student Union president.

"There is no proof of sedition against him," he said. He also hit out at BJP leaders for "defaming" the party leadership with their "anti-national" jibe and said the government should restrain them.

The Opposition has demanded for a clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the JNU row at a meeting ahead of the Budget session of Parliament. The PM had called for the meeting even as the ongoing JNU row has given fresh ammunition to the Opposition to target the government.

The exercise was aimed at seeking cooperation for the smooth functioning of the Budget session in the backdrop of virtual washout of proceedings in the last two sessions due to a host of issues.

Significantly, this is the first such meeting convened by the PM who has come under attack from a section of the Opposition, especially the Congress, which has accused him of being hell-bent on confrontation and failing to take other parties into confidence.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has 'regretted' India's objection to sale of eight F-16 aircraft to Pakistan.

Underlining that strategic balance in South Asia is pivotal for regional peace, Aziz told a news channel that India has inked big arms deals with the United States, Russia, and other countries but it is making hue and cry over F-16 jets deal between the US and Pakistan.

He reiterated the Americans' stance that the jets are being provided to Pakistan to combat terrorism. The Obama administration on Friday approved the sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan in the face of US lawmakers' opposition to the deal over Islamabad's alleged support for terrorist groups.

09:56   Modi sarkar threatened democracy; that is the most anti-national of all acts
The arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar and the crackdown on political dissent at JNU suggest that we are living under a government that is both rabidly malign and politically incompetent.

It is using nationalism to crush constitutional patriotism, legal tyranny to crush dissent, political power to settle petty scores, and administrative power to destroy institutions.

The instigation of this crackdown was the alleged chanting of some anti-national slogans at JNU, and a meeting to mark the death anniversary of Afzal Guru. But the government's disproportionate response smacks of tyranny of the highest order. It ordered the arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar, whose speech had nothing anti-national about it.

09:35   Make in India fire: Organisers flouted norms, 10 violations found
It was touted as an 'event of national importance', but officials chose to ignore the many red flags that an inspection team raised ahead of the Maharashtra Night event at Chowpatty on Sunday.

Official documents show that the Mumbai Fire Brigade's 59-point no-objection certificate for the temporary stage erected for Maharashtra Night was only partly complied with.
