19:00   Will ensure there is no meat ban: Sena
Political acrimony over the ban on meat by civic bodies in Mumbai during the Jain fasting days grew with ruling BJP ally Shiv Sena vowing that it would ensure there is no such restriction. The Sena's stand came in the wake of Opposition Congress and NCP slamming yesterday's order by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation -- ruled by Sena and BJP -- prohibiting meat sale for eight days from September 11 to 18 when the Jain community will observe fasting period 'Paryushan'.

According to the order, the ban would be enforced on four days - September 10, 13, 17 and 18. Taking a strident position on the matter, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said, "We will ensure there is no ban on sale of meat for the eight days." Interestingly, Sena is the dominant partner in BMC where it shares power with BJP.

18:40   Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's longest-reigning monarch
Etching a special place in history, Queen Elizabeth II today became Britain's longest-reigning monarch after surpassing Queen Victoria's rule of over 63 years, as heart-felt tributes, fanfare and a gun salute marked the momentous occasion.

Dressed in turquoise with her trusty black handbag at her side, the Queen smiled and waved to those gathered at the Waverley Station on the day she passes the record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria to board the new Borders Railway.

The 89-year-old, who is also the nation's oldest ever monarch, has met most of the major figures of recent decades, from India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to Japanese emperor Hirohito.

She will officially become the longest-serving monarch in British history at 1730 (local time) when her reign would have completed 63 years and seven months -- calculated at 23,226 days, 16 hours and approximately 30 minutes.

British Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes to the Queen Elizabeth as he described the 89-year-old ruler as a "rock of stability" and her service to the nation as "truly humbling" in an era when so much had changed.

"The reign of Queen Elizabeth has been a golden thread running through three post-war generations, and she's presided over more than two-thirds of our history as a full democracy with everyone being able to vote," he said in the House of Commons, where usual business was postponed for the special tributes.

"Her selfless sense of service and duty have earned her unparalleled respect and admiration not only in Britain but around the world. The Queen is our Queen and we could not be more proud of her. She has served this country with an unerring grace, dignity and decency and long may she continue to do so," Cameron said.

The Queen and Prince Philip travelled by train to Tweedbank, in the Borders region, with Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. They stopped off in Newtongrange where the Queen accepted flowers from well-wishers and opened the new railway station.

The Queen paid a personal tribute to her great-great grandmother by wearing a diamond brooch owned by Queen Victoria and passed down to her by Queen Mary. The brooch is one of a set of three ordered by Queen Victoria from the royal jeweller Garrard, made with 506 diamonds she supplied.

The Queen took time out from her traditional summer break at this time of year at her private Scottish home, Balmoral Castle, to open the new railway but overall had wanted today to be business as usual. HMS Belfast docked on river Thames sounded a four gun salute to mark the occasion.

18:22   Reese Witherspoon named People magazine's 'best-dressed' of 2015
Actress Reese Witherspoon was named People magazine's best-dressed person of 2015 on Wednesday, reports Reuters.

Witherspoon, the Oscar-winning star of Johnny Cash movie "Walk the Line," headed a list that includes Hollywood stars Julianne Moore, Kate Hudson, and 15-year-old "Mad Men" actress Kiernan Shipka.

Witherspoon, 39, has clear ideas about what she likes (bright hues and clean lines) and what she doesn't (crop tops and puffy dresses).

"I'd look like a mushroom," she told People magazine of such styles, saying her height, at 5 ft 2 in (1.58 meters), is a fashion liability. "I always tell my stylist that it's hard to dress short girls."

Witherspoon ironically was one of the women leading an #AskHerMore campaign at the 2015 Oscars ceremony in which reporters were encouraged to ask actresses on the red carpet more about their work in movies than their style choices.

The actress is often a fashion favorite on red carpets, opting for a pale blue fitted off-the-shoulder Tom Ford gown to this year's Oscars, a silver beaded strapless Calvin Klein dress for the Golden Globes and a one-shouldered Giorgio Armani gown for the SAG awards.

17:39   PM to carpet bomb Bihar with 12 mega rallies
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address 12 'Parivartan' rallies to seek votes for the BJP-led NDA during the campaign trail in the run up to the Bihar assembly polls.

A senior BJP leader told MI Khan/Rediff.com today that Modi has already addressed four 'Parivartan' rallies in Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Saharsa and Bhagalpur districts, last week, even as the Election Commission announced dates for the five-phase Bihar polls today.

"Modi is our star campaigner and we are contesting polls under his leadership and seeking votes in his name. Modi will address at least 12 rallies to counter the grand alliance of JD-U, RJD and Congress propaganda," another BJP leader said.

BJP leaders added that party workers are happy with the response of Modi's four rallies. "So far, the rallies were very successful. Modi is the most popular leader in Bihar and we are sure that his rallies in the coming days will create a favourable situation for the BJP-led NDA in the polls".

According to sources at the BJP office in Patna, the PM is likely to address a few rallies in semi-urban pockets or in sub-divisional towns to woo voters.

"So far, top leaders used to address rallies in district headquarters or big towns. But Modi will address some rallies in semi-urban areas," BJP leaders said.

The high-tech 'Parivartan Rath' campaign has already touched base with most of the 243 assembly constituencies in the state. BJP party president Amit Shah in July flagged off 160 GPS-fitted raths (chariots) to reach out to people in all villages across the state.

However, the BJP is yet to finalise the seat sharing with allies and reports coming in indicate that LJP, RLSP and HAM are staking claim for more seats. This has put the BJP in trouble as the EC has announced the dates for the polls. On the other hand the JD-U, RJD and Congress have finalised their seat sharing and are likely to announce names of their candidates soon.

17:03   Saudi embassy stands by diplomat, says rape charges are fake
The Saudi embassy in New Delhi backs its diplomat booked on rape charges. The embassy said that the media reports are unwarranted especially before the probe is over and added that false allegations were made against its diplomat. The Nepalese embassy in Delhi has also approached the Indian government in the case.

Gurgaon police commissioner NS Virk says the probe is on and that residents in the apartment had diplomatic immunity. The MEA has sought a report from the police on the case.

Two Nepalese women have alleged that they were abducted and raped by the Saudi diplomat repeatedly in a flat in Gurgaon on the outskirts of the national capital after which local police filed an FIR in the matter.

"The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in New Delhi has noted reports in Indian media concerning allegations against a Saudi diplomat and his family residing at Gurgaon, based on alleged briefings by the Haryana police to members of the media.

"The embassy strongly stresses that these allegations are false and have not been proven," a statement from the embassy said. It further said the embassy has also brought to the notice of the concerned officials in the MEA the "unwarranted media briefings before investigations are complete, and has protested the police intrusion into a diplomat's house against all diplomatic conventions."

If prima facie a case is made out, the government usually asks the country  involved to withdraw diplomatic immunity of the diplomat or official concerned or declares the individual persona non grata.

The two Nepalese women on Wednesday recounted their ordeal saying their tormentors had also threatened to kill them. The mother-daughter, who were brought to India with the lure of a better future, claimed they were not being paid wages for the last four months and now wish to go "home" as soon as possible.

There were days when seven to eight men -- all from Saudi Arabia -- would assault us. If we resisted, the diplomat and his family would threaten to kill us and dispose of our bodies in the sewer, said the older woman.

"They used to keep us in locked rooms and did not let us make any sound. They showed knives and threatened to kill us otherwise," the older victim said while showing her wounds.

"We were told they he's a good man with a big house. But we did not know what he does. We were brought for handling domestic chores... but he did horrific things with us," said the woman.

"We want to go back to Nepal and these people should be jailed as soon as possible," she added.

Members of an NGO, who assisted Gurgaon Police during the rescue operation, said the victims were sold to an Indian agent for Rs 1 lakh each.

"They were brought to India in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake. The victims were in misery and were offered Rs 30,000 and good food by an agent named Kaplana.

Asked whether he had been approached to appear in Bigg Boss 9, he said: Yes, I've been approached to appear on the show. But I asked them if they allow me to exit the house for 2-3 hours every day to meet my followers then I can think for it. Still nothing is finalised.

"Bigg Boss 9", to be hosted by superstar Salman Khan, is an Indian version of internationally acclaimed reality format "Celebrity Big Brother".

16:07   Sena slams advocates of greater numbers for Hindus
Coming down heavily on BJP MPs who are urging Hindus to increase their numbers for strengthening the religion, ruling alliance partner Shiv Sena reminded the government that excess population was a factor behind India's "misery" and said that such views cannot be supported. Some seers and BJP MPs "advocate four marriages for Hindus and maximum possible children to give a tough fight to Muslims.

"Instead of we making comments on such statements, either senior BJP leaders or the government should make their stand clear on the issue. Strength cannot be enhanced merely by increasing population," the Sena today said in an editorial in its mouthpiece, 'Saamana'. It also said that RSS should prevail upon the government to make family planning laws stricter.

15:52   This election is not Bihar's but India's, announces Lalu
RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on the Bihar poll dates:

"I wish the polls were wrapped up in a single phase though, but we are totally prepared. Intezaar tha is ghadi ka, is imtihaan mein hum paraajit karenge BJP aur NDA ko. We were waiting for this, we will be victorious over the BJP and the NDA. We will decide on seat sharing and proceed accordingly," the RJD chief said. "Yeh Bihar ka chunaav nahi, desh ka chunaav hai. This is not an election for Bihar, it's an election for India," Lalu said.

The Janata Parivar experiment was conceived last year with six parties SP, RJD, JD(U), INLD, JD(S) and SJP - joining hands under the leadership of Mulayam. However, on September 7, the Samajwadi Party announced that it would contest all the 243 Assembly seats in Bihar alone, exiting the grand alliance.

Though JD(U) president Sharad Yadav tried to woo SP back to the Grand Alliance, Mulayam had reportedly made it clear that politics and relationship Mulayams grand nephew is married to Lalus daughter were separate things.

15:37   No special sitting on GST; President to prorogue Monsoon Session
Government today decided not to hold special session of Parliament to pass the constitution amendment bill for rolling out GST and will recommend to the President to prorogue the Monsoon Session.

In view of the unrelenting attitude of the Congress on the GST issue, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, "keeping this political reality in mind, Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) decided to recommend to President to prorogue Monsoon Session".

The government was keen on special session to obtain Parliament's nod for the constitution amendment bill on the Goods and Services Tax (GST) but opted against it "for the time being" as talks with the Congress did not yield results, he said.

Efforts to reach an agreement on the GST Bill, which it had proposed to roll out from April 1, 2016, would continue, he added.

"We will keep trying. We are in contact with all political parties. And nearly all parties except Congress are in favour of this bill. In Lok Sabha, except Congress all political parties had voted in favour of the bill. Congress has walked out, they (other parties) had not walked out. If situation changes then cabinet will again reconsider the matter," he added.

On whether the government will be able to stick to the deadline of April 1, 2016 for rolling out the GST, Jaitley said, "your guess is as good as mine".

The GST bill, which has been passed by Lok Sabha, got stuck in political logjam in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling NDA does not have a majority.

As per the procedure, after approval by the Rajya Sabha the constitution amendment bill on GST will have to be approved by 50 per cent of the state legislatures.

Jaitley said that once the bill is approved by the Rajya Sabha, other steps would not take much time as the government is ready with supporting legislations, of which one has to be passed by the Centre and two by states.

"Our draft legislations are almost ready. We will require meeting of empowered committee to clear them and they can be passed. We need the IT backbone, and those handling the IT infrastructure inform us they are in position to put it in place by April 1, 2016 comfortably...we are keeping ourself in readiness," Jaitley said.

Accusing the Congress of delaying the GST, he said, "the only veto is right to disturb the Rajya Sabha so that the chairman can adjourn it".

He further said that Congress had raised certain demands which were not there in the GST bill prepared by the UPA's Finance Minister in 2011. Jaitley said it was not possible for the government to put a cap of 18 per cent on the GST rate in the constitution bill, as was being suggested by Congress.

It is for the proposed GST council to decided the tax rates, he said, adding, "suppose tomorrow states agree and alcohol comes under GST then should medicine and alcohol be taxed at same rate. This wisdom has dawned on Congress party only after it lost power!" the minister said.

14:41   Will ensure peaceful polls for 6 crore voters in Bihar: EC
Poll dates for the high-voltage Bihar Assembly elections have been announced by the Election Commission today.  Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced that Election Commission of India has asked everyone to work according to the law and guidelines of the ECI. Zaidi said the EC was committed to ensure conducive and peaceful atmosphere from the standpoint of law and order.

"We have devoted a lot of preparations to Bihar election. People have been advised to check their names on the electoral list. Single window system for all political parties comes into effect today so that all political parties can requisition choppers etc required for campaigning," said CEC Zaidi.

The term of the 243-member Bihar assembly comes to an end on November 29. Over 6 crore people are expected to vote.

All political parties in Bihar have demanded CRPF, CISF and BSF forces for the polls. At least 85 to 100 assembly segments are categorised as left-wing extremist areas and securing these segments is priority on the agenda.

After ruling the state for ten years, chief minister Nitish Kumar is seeking a third term this time in alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress after he walked out of NDA in June, 2013 snapping 17-year-old ties with the BJP.

14:13   Call drops may end as govt allows telecom spectrum trading
The government on Wednesday approved telecom spectrum trading norms, allowing mobile operators to buy and sell unused spectrum from one another. What this means is call drops may end.

Call drops have doubled in the last one year, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and the figure is four times higher than the permissible limit.

Presently, spectrum can be acquired only through the government conducted auctions. Spectrum trading would allow operators to trade their unutilised radio waves, resulting in efficient use of scarce resource and improved quality services to consumers.

Spectrum trading guidelines are a pre-requisite for consolidation in the sector as these will provide an exit route to struggling operators.

Telecom stocks soared on the Cabinet approval - Reliance Communication soared over 15 per cent, while Bharti Airtel and Idea shot up over 5 per cent.

13:08   DA hike for central govt employees hours before EC announces Bihar polls
Cabinet approves 6 per cent hike in Dearness Allowance for central government employees. This comes hours before the model code of conduct comes into effect as the EC is set to announce the election dates for the Bihar polls at 2:30 pm today.

Earlier in April, the government had hiked DA by 6 per cent to 113 per cent of their basic pay with effect from January. DA is paid as proportion of the basic pay.

The DA hike will take effect from July 1. As per the agreed formula, the DA rate increase is an average of 12-month consumer price index-industrial workers from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015.

The proposed hike is in accordance with the accepted formula based on the recommendations of the 6th Pay Commission, which will benefit 48 lakh government employees and 55 lakh pensioners.

However, president of Confederation of Central Government Employees' and Workers K K N Kutty said: "The government should have given interim relief and merged DA with basic pay in view of the extension of term of the 7th Pay Commission by four months till December 31, 2015."

Elaborating, Kutty added: "The government assured employees that the 7th Pay Commission will submit its report in 18 months. It's delaying submission of the report by the commission because it doesn't want to increase its salaries bill this fiscal."

He further said that keeping in view the real rate of price rise, DA should have been 185 per cent of the basic pay.

Last month, the Cabinet had given approval for the extension of the term of the 7th Central Pay Commission by four months up to December 31.

12:21   A litre of petrol sells for Rs 190 in Manipur!
After floods ravaged the state last month, Manipur has been hit by a steep rise in the prices of essential items.

A litre of petrol, for instance, sells at Rs 160-190 on the grey market in the state capital, Imphal. A litre of petrol costs around Rs 67 in Mumbai. And prices of essential items like onion, potato, pulses and vegetables have doubled.

This is primarily because the Imphal-Dimapur highway, which is used to ferry goods, is blocked after there was a heavy landslisde in mid-August in Nagaland's Phesama area. Repair work is still on.

Both the Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Silchar highways, key supply routes to the land-locked state, have been blocked by the landslide. A bridge has also been damaged.

Consequently, the state consumer affairs, food and public distribution department has begun rationing petrol from select outlets in Imphal with people queing up for at least six hours for a few litres of fuel.

12:05   BJP will emerge pre-eminent force in Bihar: Yogendra Yadav
:No matter who forms the government, BJP will emerge as the pre-eminent political force in Bihar. This is a major shift from what Bihar used to be. Remember, BJP used to be the number 3 or number 4 party in Bihar. We cannot be sure of the outcome, that's a guessing game. But the manner in which the game is being played is BJP vs the rest, all major political formations coming up against the BJP. What this does, is it makes the BJP the number 1 political force in Bihar. In a way this is a tragedy ..."

Derek Doneen, a 28-year-old documentary filmmaker from Los Angeles, spent a year saving for an engagement ring before he told his parents about his plan to propose. His mom mentioned that there was a diamond in the family that he could use for his girlfriend Jenna's ring instead.

Derek didn't know it at the time, but the stone was part of an heirloom necklace that had been passed down in his family for generations, starting with his great-grandparents -- Jews that escaped Nazi Germany in the 1930s -- and continuing on to his grandma, his mom and finally to him.

11:10   Indians in Yemen air strike NOT dead: MEA
News that 20 Indians have been killed by a Saudi-led alliance in air strikes on fuel smugglers at a Yemeni port yesterday, is untrue, says the ministry of external affairs. NDTV quoting the foreign ministry says 13 of the 20 Indians are alive, while seven are believed to be missing.

The alliance, made up mainly of Gulf Arab countries, has increased air strikes on Sanaa and other parts of the country since Friday, when a Houthi missile attack killed at least 60 Saudi, Bahraini and United Arab Emirates soldiers at a military camp east of Sanaa.

They were part of a force preparing to assault the capital, which the Iranian-allied Houthis seized last September.

10:11   EC likely to announce Bihar assembly poll dates today
The Election Commission is likely to announce the dates for Bihar assembly polls today.

Insiders indicate that the Bihar polls may be held in five or six phases and is likely to be held from the third week of October to the first week of November.

There are eight festivals on different dates during this period, which will have an impact on the polling dates or the counting day.

Therefore, adjustments of possible poll dates will be done with the assistance of all political parties since religion and caste sentiments are important when polling dates are decided.

All political parties in Bihar have demanded CRPF, CISF and BSF forces for the polls. At least 85 to 100 assembly segments are categorised as left-wing extremist areas and securing these segments is priority on the agenda.

After ruling the state for ten years, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is seeking a third term this time in alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal and Congress after he walked out of NDA in June, 2013 snapping 17-year-old ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The BJP, which had almost swept the state in the Lok Sabha polls in alliance with Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Samata Party, is hoping to repeat its performance and slamming Kumar for aligning with Lalu Prasad, a convict in fodder scam case.

The rupee had recovered by 27 paise to close at 66.55 against the US dollar in yesterday's trade on fresh selling of the American currency by banks and exporters amid a weak greenback in overseas markets.

09:02   Cabinet may take up proposal for 6% DA hike
The Union cabinet is likely to consider today a proposal to increase dearness allowance to 119 per cent from 113 per cent, which if cleared will potentially benefit over one crore government employees and pensioners.

"The proposal to increase dearness allowance by six percentage points to 119 per cent is likely to be taken up by the Cabinet today," a source said.

Earlier in April, the government had hiked DA by 6 per cent to 113 per cent of their basic pay with effect from January. DA is paid as proportion of the basic pay.

The proposed DA hike will take effect from July 1.

08:51   Call drops: TRAI chairman to meet telcos bosses today
Amid rising instances of call drops, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has convened a meeting of CEOs of telecom firms today to discuss the issue and work out a solution to deal with it.

Apart from call drops, other issues concerning the industry will also be discussed at the meeting.

Industry hotshots including Gopal Vittal of Bharti Airtel, Sunil Sood of Vodafone, Gurdeep Singh of Reliance Communications and Himanshu Kapania of Idea Cellular, among others, will hold discussions with TRAI Chairman RS Sharma.

TRAI has proposed that service providers should compensate mobile subscribers for call drops and poor quality of services.

The regulator said it is also considering making it mandatory for telecom operators to disclose their network capacities periodically as the regulator feels that the call drop problem needs to be examined in entirety.

Analysing the issue of call drops, TRAI said operators can reduce them to a large extent by way of improving radio coverage, expanding the capacity of the network and optimising the performance of various network elements, which require both efforts and investments on their part.

08:48   Border forces' talks: Pak Rangers team to arrive in Delhi today
A high-level delegation of Pakistani Rangers will arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday to hold the much-anticipated bilateral talks with their counterparts, the Border Security Force on Thursday on key issues including ceasefire violations and cross-border infiltration.

The talks between Indo-Pak border forces come after more than one-and-a-half-year. The last round was held in December 2013 in Lahore.

Despite it cancelling the NSA-level talks with India which made it clear that there should not be any meeting between Kashmiri separatists and Pakistani NSA Sartaj Aziz during his visit to India, Islamabad had agreed to New Delhi's proposal on a meeting between the two border guarding forces.

While the 15-member Pakistan delegation will be led by the senior Rangers Director General (Punjab) Maj Gen Umar Farooq Burki, the 23-member Indian side would be headed by BSF DG D K Pathak during the talks and expected to raise issues like ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir, including sniper attacks on BSF personnel and infiltration.

"The talks will also endeavour to focus on positive issues like different levels of communication, more simultaneous coordinated patrolling and other confidence building measures," a BSF statement said.

According to sources, extra stress would be on the "most important" issue of breach of ceasefire in J&K which has led to loss of lives of civilians and troops and "unprovoked" firing by the Rangers along the IB. The issue of "no response" by the other side when BSF waves the 'white flag' which is used to indicate stopping of fire and meeting of on-ground commanders of the two sides will also be taken up.

08:46   Law Commission set to be reconstituted
The law commission, which advises government on complex legal issues, is set to be reconstituted in the coming days.

The Union cabinet will take a call today on a law ministry proposal to reconstitute the panel as the term of the previous law commission ended on August 31.

The commission is reconstituted every three years and is headed by a retired Supreme Court judge or former chief justice of a high court.

Sources said while the Cabinet today will only take a call on reconstituting the commission, the law ministry is in the process of shortlisting names of retired judges to head the 21st law panel.

The names shortlisted could include some high court chief justices who retired in the recent past.

The 20th law commission headed by former Delhi High Court Chief Justice A P Shah had given a report on its last day recommending abolishing death penalty except in cases of terror and waging war against India.

It had also submitted two reports on electoral reforms.

08:36   Hillary on private email server: 'I'm sorry; it was a mistake'
Apologising for using private email server during her term as secretary of state, Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton has said "I am sorry" and termed her decision a "mistake."

"I do think I could have and should have done a better job answering questions earlier. I really did not perhaps appreciate the need to do that," Clinton told the ABC news in an interview on Tuesday.

"What I had done was allowed, it was above board. But in retrospect, as I look back at it now, even though it was allowed, I should have used two accounts. One for personal, one for work-related emails. That was a mistake. I am sorry about that. I take responsibility," she said.

Clinton's acknowledgement of the "mistake" came as the email controversy threatens to derail her presidential campaign. Latest polls indicates she is slipping behind her nearest Democratic rivals in some of the key States and her popularity rating is coming down.

In her interview, Clinton said she did not violate the law as this was allowed at that time.

"As I said, it was allowed and there was no hiding it. It was totally above board. Everybody in the government I communicated and that was a lot of people, knew I was using a personal email.

"But I am sorry that it has, you know, raised all of these questions. I do take responsibility for having made what is clearly not the best decision," she said.

08:33   British Airways plane with 172 on board catches fire on Las Vegas runway; 2 hurt
A London-bound British Airways plane caught fire while it was preparing to take off from Las Vegas with 172 people on board, leaving at least two injured.

The plane's left engine burst into flames on the runway at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon while it was about to depart for London's Gatwick Airport with 159 passengers and 13 crew members on board, according to the airport.

Heavy black smoke and orange flames could be seen pouring from under the plane's wings, sending passengers fleeing quickly from the aircraft and across the tarmac before about 50 firefighters doused the aircraft in minutes.

The airport reported on its official Twitter account that two passengers were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Fire officials said paramedics on the scene were also evaluating some passengers.

Firefighters stationed at the airport reached the plane two minutes after getting reports of flames and within another three minutes, everyone inside the plane had escaped.

03:36   Refugee crisis: Why aren't Gulf states taking them in?
They've risked their lives to escape war in Syria. Most of Europe has struggled to deal with their masses, and has at least tried to answer a humanitarian call of a magnitude not seen since World War II.

But no Syrian refugees have been resettled in Persian Gulf nations like Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, countries with significant financial and political interest in Syria.

"Other countries need to do more," tweeted Nadim Houry, Human Rights Watch deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa. He called those wealthy countries' inaction on the Syrian refugee crisis "shameful."

03:00   UN warns Hungary it faces a wave of 42,000 more migrants
Leaders of the United Nations refugee agency have warned that Hungary faces a bigger wave of 42,000 asylum seekers in the next 10 days and will need international help to provide shelter on its border, where newcomers already are complaining bitterly about being left to sleep in frigid
fields.

Officials from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees yesterday said it was sending tents, beds and thermal blankets to Hungary's border with Serbia, where for the past two days frustrated groups from the Middle East, Asia and Africa have ignored police instructions to stay put and instead have marched on a highway north to Budapest.

Commissioner Antonio Guterres accused the entire European Union of failing to see the crisis coming or take coordinated action, even though the 28-nation bloc of 508 million people should have enough room and resources to absorb hundreds of thousands of newcomers with ease.

There was needless suffering in the migration crisis "because Europe is not organised to deal with it, because the European asylum system has been extremely dysfunctional and in recent weeks completely chaotic," Guterres said. He told a news conference in Paris that it appeared "clear that if
Europe would be properly organised, it would be a manageable
crisis."

01:07   Germany says it can take half a million migrants
Germany said it could take half a million refugees annually to help Europe's migrant crisis as Greece's Aegean islands struggled today to cope with another wave of desperate humanity.

Reflecting deepening concern, the European Union's president warned the EU faced a years-long refugee crisis, while the UN called on all countries of the world to join in tackling the problem.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's deputy, Sigmar Gabriel, said Germany "could surely deal with something in the order of half a million (refugees) for several years."

And Merkel herself urged greater flexibility in EU migrant quotas and stressed that the crisis should lead to changes in Europe's policy.

Germany has previously said it expects to receive 800,000 asylum-seekers this year, four times the 2014 total.

Berlin would keep accepting "a greatly disproportionate share" among EU members "because we are an economically strong country," Gabriel said late Monday.

But it was unacceptable for the EU to keep relying on just a few countries, such as Austria, Sweden and Germany, he added, saying "that's why I am certain that European policy needs to change".

00:45   US unveils Predator drones at Latvian airbase
The US Air Force on Tuesday showed off its advanced MQ-1 "Predator" drone at a Latvian airbase, marking the first time the cutting-edge aircraft has been deployed in Europe.

The showcase at the central Lielvarde airbase comes as tensions run high in the Baltic states -- Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia -- with neighbouring Russia over its role in the Ukraine conflict.

"It's important to train for interoperability between NATO partners," Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis told AFP at the event.

"It's a good example of smart defence that we can use equipment that we don't currently have," he said, adding Riga is considering buying its own drones without specifying which.

Originally built for Russian bombers, the Lielvarde base has been extensively overhauled to make it the only one in Europe capable of hosting Predator drones on a permanent basis.

00:24   Dick Cheney on Iran deal: 'It is madness'
Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Tuesday that President Barack Obama is responsible for directly equipping Iran with the capability to destroy the United States, calling the negotiated nuclear deal "madness."

A few hours later, the deal got the support of three more Democrats in the Senate, ensuring President Obama has the support to carry forward with the deal despite majority opposition from Republicans and some Democrats in Congress.

In the fiery speech delivered at the American Enterprise Institute, the Republican security hawk unleashed an aggressive attack against the Iran deal, which Congress will begin debating this week. Though congressional Republicans will likely not have enough votes to thwart the White House's nuclear agreement with Iran, Cheney will present his case against the accord.

00:05   US woman beaten to death in Nepal
Dahlia Yehia was an artist, a teacher and a searcher, describing herself like this on her blog, The Tea Devourer: "I still haven't found what I'm looking for, and that's how I want it to be for a while."

A few months ago she traveled to Nepal to backpack and help in the aftermath of April's devastating earthquake.
