23:31   4 persons injured in blast outside Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore
At least four persons, including two policemen, were injured today in a blast here near the Gaddafi Stadium where a day-night match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was underway.

The cricket match was underway when the blast took place near the stadium at 9 pm, leaving at least four policemen injured who were rushed to nearby hospital where their condition was stated to be out of dangers.

The Pakistan Cricket Board immediately issued a statement, saying it was a "power transformer blast" that was caused by malfunctioning. A couple of policemen received minor injuries, it said.

22:00   FIFA votes for new president
A FIFA congress today started a vote for a new president with incumbent Sepp Blatter the favourite despite a major corruption scandal engulfing the organisation.

Blatter's challenger is Prince Ali bin al Hussein of Jordan, 39, who has campaigned on the need for reform at the multi-billion dollar world body which has faced a series of scandals in recent years.

The vote started at 1505 GMT and was expected to take at least one hour.

Blatter, 79, who became president in 1998, is seeking a fifth term and needs a two thirds majority of the 209 member federations to win in the first round.

A simple majority is enough if the battle goes to the second round. Blatter vowed to lead FIFA out of the corruption "storm" it has become embroiled in if he wins.

The body was rocked by the arrest of seven officials in Zurich on Wednesday.

"I am held responsible for the storm. OK yes I accept this responsibility," he told a FIFA congress.

"I promise a strong FIFA, I want to climb back up the hill, arrange FIFA's situation. I want a beautiful FIFA, strong out of the storm," he said before voting started.

21:19   Govt may take call on re-promulgating land ordinance on Saturday
The government is likely to take a call on re-promulgating the controversial land acquisition ordinance on Saturday.

The earlier ordinance brought into force in March would lapse on June 4, six weeks after the Rajya Sabha was convened on April 23 after being prorogued to enable government bring the executive order.

Sources said the issue of ordinance has been placed on the agenda of the Union Cabinet.

The proposal of the Rural Development Ministry comes as a Joint Committee of Parliament is examining the Land acquisition bill -- based on the ordinance in force.

The government, which had promulgated ordinance twice on the bill since December after it faced continuous resistance especially in Rajya Sabha, where it does not have the numbers, had agreed to refer it to the committee, during the recently concluded Parliament session.

21:13   US drops Cuba from list of state sponsors of terrorism
The United States formally dropped Cuba from a list of state sponsors of terrorism on Friday, an important step toward restoring diplomatic ties but one that will have limited effect on removing US sanctions on the Communist-ruled island.

President Barack Obama had announced on April 14 he would drop the former Cold War rival from the list, initiating a 45-day review period for Congress that expired on Friday.

Obama ordered a review of Cuba's status on the terrorism list as part of a landmark policy shift on December 17, when he and Cuban President Raul Castro announced they would seek to restore diplomatic relations that Washington severed in 1961, and work toward a broader normalization of ties.

Removal from the list is a step that has more symbolic than practical significance. It removes a prohibition on receiving US economic aid, a ban on US arms exports and controls on "dual-use" items with military and civilian applications.

20:17   Hundreds to attend Mohammed cartoon rally
Jon Ritzheimer is the organizer of Friday's "Freedom of Speech Rally" outside the Islamic Community Center in Phoenix.

It's the mosque that Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi attended for a time. They're the men who drove from Arizona to a Dallas suburb to shoot up a Prophet Mohammed cartoon contest there. Both were killed by police early this month.

Many Muslims consider any depiction of Mohammed to be blasphemous and banned by the Islamic holy book, the Quran.

The rally
"This is in response to the recent attack in Texas where 2 armed terrorist(s), with ties to ISIS, attempted Jihad," the event's Facebook page said.

Some 600 people say they're attending.

It's scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m., about the time evening prayers are taking place inside the center. The rally also features its own cartoon contest, similar to the one targeted in Texas.

"I think the whole thing, the cartoon contest especially, I think it's stupid and ridiculous," Ritzheimer said, "but it's what needs to take place in order to expose the true colors of Islam."

15:40   Days after Rajnath's warning, Pakistan flags waved at J-K separatist rally again
In Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, separatist leader Shabir Shah's supporters wave Pakistan flags at a rally. This comes two days after home minister Rajnath Singh said that this government would not tolerate raising of pro-Pakistan slogans or display of Pakistan flags on Indian soil.

"We are worried about the future of youth, but such elements want to play with their future,'' he said, adding, "I appeal to the youth to come forward and confront them,'' Rajnath had said in Jammu on Wednesday, when he was in the state as part of the BJP's countrywide "Jan Chetna Parv''.

Significantly, this is the first time that Centre has appealed to local people to come forward and confront those raising pro-Pakistan slogans and waving Pakistan flags in the Valley. Earlier, the governments at the Centre dealt with such elements by slapping charges of sedition on them or keeping them under preventive detention.

15:33   How Taylor Swift saved the life of three teens (almost)
Pop star Taylor Swift saved the lives of three teenagers involved in a car accident following her concert. The 25-year-old singer did so with the help of the wristbands given to fans attending the shows on her "1989" tour, reported Ace Showbiz.

The three teens were Elizabeth Dazzio, her sister Caroline and a friend. They were driving home from the second night of Swift's show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana's LSU Tiger Stadium when Dazzio fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed the vehicle. Dazzio was unconscious while the two other girls were trapped inside the wreckage. Their cell phones were dead, so they tried to catch the attention of drivers passing by using the wristband, which had been programmed to light up in sync to the beat of Swift's music during the concert.

A woman eventually noticed the light and pulled over to help the girls and called 911. Dazzio was rushed to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Swift shared the story on Twitter and expressed gratitude that the three girls were okay. "This is unreal. I'm so happy they're okay," she wrote.

15:05   No jung, only Najeeb Jung, says Rajnath on standoff between AAP, L-G
In the midst of the ongoing stand-off between the Delhi Lt Governor and the AAP government, the Centre today said it has no intention to run the city government through anyone and is conscious of its Constitutional responsibility and committed to uphold it.

He was replying to a question on whether the Centre wants to run the Delhi government through the Lieutenant Governor as it has given him absolute powers in several matters, including transfer and postings of senior bureaucrats, by issuing a notification, which was challenged in the court by the Arvind Kejriwal government.

"We are not against anyone but it is our responsibility to uphold constitutional provisions. Everyone should remain within the framework of the Constitution," he said without naming anyone.

Asked to comment on Delhi Assembly's resolution holding as "illegal" the Centre's May 21 notification giving more powers to the LG and Kejriwal's statement that the Narendra Modi-led government is trying to push the country towards "dictatorship", the Home Minister said he would not like to say anything on this but added that the government was committed to uphold the Constitution.

Singh further said that if any law and order situation arises in the national capital, the central government is obliged to intervene. "I don't want to say who is doing what but we are committed to uphold the Constitution. Law and order is also my duty...we will see," he said. When asked if a jung (war) is going on between the Centre and the Delhi government, Singh said in a lighter vein, "There is no jung, only Najeeb Jung."

13:25   Hopeful of positive interpretation of Constitution by Delhi HC: BJP
The BJP on Friday said it looks forward to a favourable and positive interpretation of the Constitution by the Delhi High Court which will hear the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's petition challenging the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notification of May 21.

"At a situation when the state government is challenging the notification of MHA which has only reiterated the position that existed for the past several years, it's only natural that the courts will have to really interpret the Constitution," BJP spokesperson G.V.L Narsimha Rao said.

"So the matter is pending before the courts and the MHA notification and the powers of LG will hopefully be examined and we look forward to a very favourable and positive interpretation of the Constitution by the Courts," he added.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notification had stated that the Lieutenant Governor has primacy in postings and transfers of officers belonging to Central services.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had reacted strongly to it, saying the NDA Government at the Centre was trying to run the national capital through the 'backdoor'.

Kejriwal had also stated that the notification was indicative of the BJP's nervousness about the Aam Aadmi Party's anti-corruption efforts.

Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit seems to have landed in a soup for endorsing Maggi with the Haridwar Food and Drug Administration today serving a notice to her on the claims made in the advertisement.

12:05   Let Delhi HC hear AAP vs Centre case, rules SC
Fight your battles, we will not step in, the Supreme Court seems to say.

The apex court has refused to step into the power battle between the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi and said today that the High Court has to decide on the home ministry notification that limits the powers of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal

The SC asked the Delhi HC to hear the Delhi government's fresh plea for quashing notifications without getting influenced by any observation. "The HC must hear the case independently," the court observed.

The High Court had, earlier this week, called the notification 'suspect' and said the Lieutenant Governor, who represents the Centre, is "bound to act upon the aid and advice" of the Delhi council of Ministers.

In a two-day "emergency session" of the Delhi assembly, which ended yesterday, the AAP-dominated house called the Centre's notification 'illegal'and approached the SC over the issue.

Details awaited.

10:55   2 of Indian-origin among richest self-made US women: Forbes
On a day when Indian-Americans have scored (as they always do) two Indian-origin women have made it to Forbes' inaugural list of America's 50 richest self-made women, sharing the honour with high-achievers such as Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, media mogul Oprah Winfrey and singer Beyonce.

India-born Neerja Sethi, with a net worth of USD 1.1 billion, has been ranked 14th on the list of the most successful self-made women in the US while London-born Jayshree Ullal comes in at the 30th spot with a USD 470 million net worth. Sethi, 60 co-founded IT consulting and outsourcing company Syntel with her husband, billionaire Bharat Desai, in 1980.

She served as Syntel's treasurer during its first 16 years of operations and is currently the vice president of corporate affairs, a role she has had since the company's inception, Forbes said.

Through their family foundation, the couple pledged USD 1 million in 2014 to the University of Michigan to develop a start-up accelerator.

Ullal became president and CEO of Arista Networks, a company that has emerged as one of Silicon Valley's most valuable networking firms. Forbes said Ullal "is one of America's wealthiest female executives".

10:46   When Spelling Bee champ Vanya met Obama
It was a breathtaking exhibition of spell-manship at the Spelling Bee competition. And it comes as no surprise that desi kids dominated the competition yet again and how! Seven of the 10 finalists were Indian-Americans.

Interestingly, Vanya Shivashankar from California (a co-winner along with Gokul Venkatachalam) is the younger sister of a 2009 spelling bee champ Kavya. Vanya is the first sibling of the former champion.

After bagging the prize in 2009, Kavya met United States President Barack Obama, as most Spelling Bee champs have the honour to do so.

Accompanying Kavya was her youngster sister and star of today's competition Vanya.

Little Vanya is seen in this picture looking starry-eyed at the president. Who wouldn't? :)

09:59   IIT-Madras bans student group for criticising PM Modi
In a controversial move, the Indian Institute of Technology has banned a discussion forum for students after an anonymous complaint was filled against it for trying to spread hatred against Prime Minister Modi. The forum, according to the complaint, summoned SC/ST students to question government policies on the use of Hindi and the ban on cow slaughter.

The decision came after the ministry of human resource development made an inquiry regarding the anonymous complaint it had received on the activities of the Ambedkar Periyar Student Circle on the IIT campus, The Times of India reports.

In the letter to the IIT director dated May 15, Prisca Mathew, under secretary to the government of India, wrote, "I am directed to forward herewith a copy of anonymous letter alleging serious complaints received from students, IIT-Madras along with pamphlet issued by Ambedkar-Periyar study circle on the above mentioned subject and to request that comments of the institute may please be sent to this ministry at an early date."

A week later, on May 24, the IIT dean (for students), Sivakumar M Srinivasan, sent a terse email to the coordinators of the APSC informing them that they had been "derecognized".
