23:31   Freedom of expression has limits, one can't provoke: Pope on Charlie Hebdo cartoons
Even as France and entire world at large, continue to reel under shock generated by deadly attacks on French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo's office, Pope Francis on Thursday said that freedom of expression has limits and that one can't provoke others or insult others' faith. However, the pope added that it was an "aberration" to kill in God's name.

The ruthless attack by Kouachi brothers on Charlie Hebdo's office for publishing Prophet Muhammad cartoons killed eight journalists last week, triggering outrage worldwide as rallies were held across the globe in a show of solidarity with the victims.

However, Pope Francis objected to unbridled freedom of expression saying that it was inappropriate to provoke others or insult their faith.

Trying to present his opinion on a lighter note, the pope gave the example of his aide Alberto Gasparri, who organises his papal trips and was standing by his side aboard the papal plane.

"If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch. It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others," the Pope said as quoted by a news agency.

However, Francis also said that it was an "aberration" to kill in the name of God and said religion can never be used to justify violence.

"One cannot make war (or) kill in the name of one's own religion... To kill in the name of God is an aberration," Francis said.

"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said.

23:24   Dera chief's Messenger of God gets release nod
CNN-IBN reports: 'MSG -- The Messenger of God', featuring controversial chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, in lead role will release on Friday.

The release of the movie was cleared by the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal.

The Dera chief's film had earlier been denied certification by the Censor Board after committee members took exception to Ram Rahim Singh depicting himself as god in the film.

The movie has the controversial Dera chief -- who is facing cases of sexual abuse and murder -- in the lead role and portrays him as a swashbuckling hero fighting "social evils" in flashy costumes.

While the trailer has already garnered over a million hits on the popular video sharing site, YouTube; the same does not seem to be appealing to the authorities. Most of the board members showed concerns with the actor and Godman Baba Ram Rahim Singh doing miracles and performing acts to cure diseases in the film.

21:49   Ajay Singh re-boards SpiceJet with Rs 1,500-cr deal; Marans exit
Cash-strapped SpiceJet's original promoter Ajay Singh today returned to the airline with a long-term plan entailing an investment of up to Rs 1,500 crore, as Maran family agreed to cede control with transfer of over 53 per cent stake in the carrier.

Singh, who is in talks to rope in more investors including foreign entities, would get 53.48 per cent stake, currently worth about Rs 500 crore, in the airline from the Maran family as part of the deal approved by the SpiceJet board today.

"The airline has given a revival and restructuring plan to the Civil Aviation Ministry for change in control, which has to be cleared by it. Once they do it, we will execute the revival plan," Singh told PTI here tonight.

An open offer for purchase of further 26 per cent from public shareholders (worth about Rs 250 crore) will be made if asked by the market regulator Sebi.

Kalanithi Maran-led Sun Group would also infuse Rs 80 crore in the loss-making airline following conversion of their warrants, which would give them a 10 per cent minority stake.

Marans would remain invested with this stake in the airline, which they acquired over four years ago, as a public shareholder although they would cease to be its promoters.

"The revival plan would include financing and operational efficiency," Singh said.

20:26   'Male-dominated' Oscar 2015?
NPR's Linda Holmes has an interesting take this year's Oscar nominations.

Every year, there is a capricious quality to the nominations that makes it difficult to draw any particular meaning from them, but there are likely to be a few discussion points floating around today in the wake of these announcements, she says.

Even for the Oscars -- even for the Oscars -- this is a really, really lot of white people.

Every nominated actor in lead and supporting categories -- 20 actors in all is white. Every nominated director is male. Every nominated screenwriter is male.

She Googled herself, trying to figure out how easy it would be to find where the family lived. In the morning, she went to her car and scraped the military decal off the front window.

As the spouse of a Special Forces soldier, she's always tried to be conscious of how much she advertises that she and her three young children are a military family.

"It's hard because I am so proud of what my husband does, but lately so many spouses that I know are actually scared that they could be targets of ISIS or someone who sympathizes with ISIS," she said, asking that CNN keep her name out of the story for that reason.

00:23   French officials to visit India to rescue stalled Rafale jet deal
A French delegation will visit New Delhi this month to salvage an agreement to supply 126 Rafale fighter jets to the Indian Air Force that has hit a snag over the local assembly of the planes, threatening to derail one of the world's biggest defence deals.

India is insisting that France's Dassault Aviation take full responsibility for the production of the aircraft at a state-run facility in Bangalore under the 2012 bid offer, Indian defence ministry officials said.

France has said it will help Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd stick to delivery schedules, but that it cannot give guarantees for production of the aircraft made at a facility over which it has no administrative or expert control.

Military experts say the deal could cost India $20 billion, double the original estimate, because of the benchmarking of aircraft prices and a roughly 5 percent annual cost increase.
