23:22   Paris gunman bought weapons in Belgium: reports
French Islamist gunman Amedy Coulibaly bought most of the weapons used in last week's Paris attacks in Belgium, Belgian newspapers reported today.

The Kalashnikov rifle and rocket launchers used by brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi in the Charlie Hebdo magazine attack were bought by Coulibaly near the Gare du Midi railway station for less than 5,000 euros (USD 7,000), Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reported.

The Scorpio assault rifle that Coulibaly used during a hostage-taking at a Jewish supermarket in Paris also came from Brussels, the newspaper said, quoting "very well placed sources."

Belgian prosecutors declined to comment immediately when contacted by AFP.

Separately, a known trafficker from Charleroi, south of Brussels, handed himself in to police yesterday saying he had been in contact with Coulibaly in recent months, the Belga news agency reported.

23:22   Saradha scam: Mukul Roy seeks 15 days time, CBI says no
Trinamool Congress General Secretary Mukul Roy today sought 15 days extension of time to appear before CBI in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam but the investigating agency said the plea would not be granted.

Speaking to PTI, Roy said "I had confirmed to CBI while I was Delhi that I would appear before it. But at the time the by-poll to two seats in West Bengal had not been announced."

"Since I am a key functionary of the party and would be pre-occupied with the by-election, I have sought 15 days time from CBI."

When asked, Roy said he had communicated to the CBI official who had called him up. "I had phoned the CBI officer who had asked me to appear before the agency. I have also written to him and also sent a fax message."

"I will 100 per cent cooperate with CBI in its investigation," he said.

CBI had on Monday asked Roy to appear before it when he was in Delhi. The bye-election to Bongaon parliamentary constituency and Krishnagar assembly seat were announced by the Election Commission yesterday.

The special crime branch of CBI said it would not grant the extension.

22:22   Ajmal clears unofficial bowling action test
Suspended Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal today claimed to have cleared a private bowling action test, but it remains uncertain whether he will feature in next year's World Cup.

The private test was conducted in a laboratory in Edgbaston in England and Ajmal now needs to clear an official reassessment in an International Cricket Council accredited laboratory in Chennai, India on January 24.

The 37-year-old was suspended over illegal bowling action in September last year and last month withdrew from the World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand in February-March.

His withdrawal came after remedial work carried out under former Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq to alter his bowling action fell short.

Ajmal said he is confident he can clear the official test after success in the private assessment.

"I cleared the private test," Ajmal told AFP. "The tests were conducted in Edgbaston and all my deliveries including the 'doosra' (his trademark swing) were within 15 degrees."

Under the ICC rules all bowlers are allowed to straighten their bowling arm by 15 degrees, beyond which the action is deemed illegal.

Ajmal's first assessment in August last year revealed his arm extension went to 43 degrees.

Ajmal, however, remained unsure whether he would be able to feature in the World Cup or not.

Amid a major row over religious conversion, Vishwa Hindu Parishad today said nothing will deter it from going ahead with its core agenda of 'Ghar Wapsi' and Ram Temple construction, and that it will hold a major convention in Delhi on March 1 to highlight the issues.

The VHP will organise a major "Dharam Sabha" at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on March 1 as part of its nationwide programme to highlight the issues which are its core agenda. It will be addressed by top leaders like Ashok Singhal and Praveen Togadia, VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain said.

The VHP has so far organised 450 such meetings across the country and will hold a total of 600 sabhas by March.

"We will proceed with our programme and will continue to hold 'Dharam Sabhas' across the country to highlight our core issues like 'Ghar Wapsi', cow protection, uniform civil code and Ram Mandir construction," Jain said.

Asked if top Hindutva leaders have asked VHP not to highlight such issues and give the BJP-led government a moratorium on such issues, he denied and said, "Nobody has asked us to stop with our programme."

21:03   Tribunal will decide fate of Dera chief's film: Govt
A decision on the screening of a film by Dera Saccha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh which has failed to get a go-ahead from the censor board will be taken by the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal, the government today said.

"Well you know the process... in the first screening, thereafter it has gone to the reviewing committee. From the reviewing committee it has gone to the appellate...," Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore told
reporters in New Delhi.

"Messenger of God", which features Singh in the lead role as well, was slated to hit the screens on Friday.

Rathore said the appellate will see the movie and accordingly take a decision whether there would be number of cuts in it or whatever is required.

"The ultimate idea is that there is freedom of expression for the person, who has made the film. As long it is keeping with the interest of the nation, interest of all the religions, the appellate will not have any problem. Let's wait for the appellate's decision to come," he said.

"It has gone to the appellate. We will wait for the decision of the appellate. They, probably, might carry out some cuts, whatever, that's up to them," he added.

20:56   Thousands worship 'makaravilakku' at Sabarimala
Thousands of devotees from different parts of the country offered worship at the hill shrine of Sabarimala on the auspicious occasion of the 'Makarajyothi' this evening, marking the finale of the two-month-long pilgrimage to the Lord Ayyappa temple.

The holy hillock and the base camp on the banks of the river Pampa reverberated with chants of "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa" as the portals of the shrine opened after 'deeparadhana' (arti), performed with the idol of the presiding deity being donned with glittering holy jewels, 'Thiruvabharanam'.

The jewels had been brought to the sanctum sanctorum in a ceremonial procession moments before the 'aarti'.

The procession carrying the jewels in wooden caskets had set out a couple of days earlier from the Pandalam palace where, according to legend, Lord Ayyappa was born and spent his childhood.

The sannidhanam (temple complex) atop the hillock and the base camp Pampa had been overflowing with devotees in the last few days making it a challenging task for police to manage the crowd.

Thousands of pilgrims had reached and camped atop the hill in make-shift tents and shacks, with devotees from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka forming a major chunk.

20:55   Perumal Murugan's novel will be sold after deletions
Copies of Tamil novel Madhorubagan, which has come under fire from some Hinduvta and caste outfits, have been withdrawn and will be up for sale only after deletions that have been promised by its author Perumal Murugan, the publisher today said.

"We will put up Madhorubagan for sale only after completion of deletion of portions promised by the author," publisher, Kala Chuvadu publications, Kannan Sundaram told PTI.

The novel was first publised in 2010 in Tamil. The English version "One part woman" was released in 2013.

It revolves around the travails of a childless couple and also deals with consensual sex between any man and any childless woman to conceive during the annual temple car festival at Tiruchengode.

Hindutva supporters and caste outfits had strongly objected to such aspects of the novel.

They alleged the town Tiruchengode, women devotees and an annual car festival of the Shiva temple there were portrayed in a bad light.  However, the author denied it and came forward to apologise if he had hurt any sections of people.

20:01   Pak govt submits 'strong evidence' against Lakhvi
Pakistan government today submitted "strong evidence" against Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi in the high court in Islamabad during an in-camera hearing in the detention case of the Mumbai attack mastermind.

Lakhvi's counsel Raja Rizwan Abbasi protested the in-camera hearing saying, "the classified documents are available on the Internet and are just one click away from the reach of anyone and the government had wasted the time of the court."

He also argued that the government had no "legal grounds" to detain his client under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).

Notwithstanding Abbasi's arguments, Islamabad High Court Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi held the in-camera proceedings and observed, "As the government has submitted classified evidence against Lakhvi, the next hearing on Thursday (tomorrow) will
be held in open."

A law officer yesterday told the Islamabad high court that the government had "strong evidence" against Lakhvi which could not be shared in open proceedings.

He requested the court to hold in-camera proceedings so that the government could present the classified evidence against the accused, justifying its decision to detain him under MPO. Judge Qureshi had accepted government's plea.

19:59   Imran, wife face wrath of Peshawar terror-hit school parents
Imran Khan and his newly-wed wife today faced an embarassing situation when grieving parents of the victims of the Peshawar school massacre booed and tried to stop him from entering the school premises, accusing him of politicising the tragedy and being busy with marriage plans.

The protest took place when the Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician along with his new wife Reham Khan arrived at the Army Public School to meet the students.

The protesting parents shouting "Go Imran Go" slogans blocked the way of Imran's cavalcade from entering the school premises.

The attack claimed lives of 150 people, including 134 children, who were butchered by Taliban militants. The school reopened on Monday after remaining closed for weeks.

The parents were also angry with Khan for politicising the attack. "Do not pour in politics all over the blood of our children," said an angry parent.

"Imran came after one month to visit the school because he was busy with his wedding," said another angry parent.

The crowd also scuffled with the police but did not let Khan and his wife enter by the main gate.

19:11   BJP opposes govt move on celebrating jayaBJP opposes govt move on celebrating 'communal' Tipu jayanti
Calling the 18th century legendary king Tipu Sultan "communal", BJP today expressed strong reservations about the state government's move to celebrate his birth anniversary as "Tipu Jayanti".

"State government has decided to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticises this move," Karnataka BJP President Prahlad Joshi said.

Calling Tipu Sultan "communal", he said "We all know how he forced religious conversion on people... he had written letters to Islamic rulers of Turkey and Afghanistan to attack India, so as to make this country an Islamic country. All these things are recorded in the history."

"If government is so interested in projecting its religious tolerance, it should celebrate anniversaries of people like Shishunala Sharif (a saint poet and philosopher who lived between 1819-1889), instead of celebrating birthdays of controversial persons," he said.

On December 22, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said that the government has decided to celebrate "Tipu Jayanti" and the date would be decided shortly.

(In fact, I've never had more comments on a post or column.)A vast majority of readers were critical of The Times's decision, feeling strongly that both because of news value and in order to reinforce free speech and show solidarity with a publication under attack, The Times should have published them.

"Chief Minister should sack the ignorant minister. The future of youths in the state is at stake in the hands of the current youth affairs and sports minister," state unit NCP spokesman Trojano D'Mello said.

Parsekar, while seeking to defuse the controversy, had yesterday said the minister must be "ignorant" about the issue and that the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community's sexual preferences were "natural".

15:16   Gandhis rage after Sheila Dikshit's 'support to AAP in case of hung verdict' remark
Former Delhi CM Shiela Dikshit was taken to task for suo-moto lending support to AAP in Delhi the Assembly polls if it fell short of numbers.

It is learnt that an angry Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi dispatched senior party leader B K Hariprasad to enquire why she made such a statement. When Dikshit tried to ward it off saying TV channels came all of a sudden and it was a slip of tongue, Hariprasad told her point blank that the five  TV channels were invited by her for lunch and she later gave a detailed byte which by no stretch of imagination could be "off-the-cuff'. Sheila looked suitably chastised.

The Gandhis do not want more trouble before the Delhi polls, hence no formal notice was issued to her.

After saying that Congress could support AAP in case of a hung verdict in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, the former chief minister found herself on a sticky wicket as her party ruled out any possibility of its backing the Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit.

"How does the question of supporting AAP arise? (If that was the situation) then there was no need for elections. It must be her personal view," Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza had said.

Former Aam Aadmi Party leader Shazia Ilmi has been hugely criticised for campaigning for the BJP today. Madhu Kishwar tweets: "As a friend,I had repeatedly advised @shaziailmi to mind her language in critiquing BJP. I knew she would have to eat humble pie."

Ilmin began campaign for the BJP in the Delhi Assembly elections to be held on February 7. The former AAP leader quit the party last year, accusing chief Arvind Kejriwal of cultivating cronies around him.

But it was when she recently joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, that speculations were raised of her joining the saffron party.

Ilmi had contested the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections from the RK Puram constituency which she lost to BJP's Anil Sharma by a thin margin of 326 votes. She also lost the 2014 general elections from Ghaziabad against former Army chief General VK Singh.

There are now rumours, that Ilmi will join the BJP tomorrow. The BJP has not declared its candidates for the Delhi elections yet and there is speculation that she may be fielded against former mentor Arvind Kejriwal.

12:13   Egypt's Grand Mufti warns against Charlie Hebdo cover
Egypt's Grand Mufti warned the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Tuesday against publishing a new caricature of the Prophet Mohammad, saying it was a racist act that would incite hatred and upset Muslims around the world.

Charlie Hebdo published a cover on Wednesday showing a caricature of the Prophet in its first edition since Islamist gunmen attacked the weekly's offices in Paris last Wednesday, killing 12 people.

"This edition will cause a new wave of hatred in French and Western society in general and what the magazine is doing does not serve coexistence or a dialog between civilisations," the office of Grand Mufti Shawqi Allam, one of the region's most influential Muslim clerics, said in a statement.

"This is an unwarranted provocation against the feelings of ... Muslims around the world."

A total of 17 people were killed in three days of violence that began when the gunmen opened fire at Charlie Hebdo in revenge for its past publication of satirical images of the Prophet. With demand surging for this week's edition, Charlie Hebdo planned to print up to 3 million copies, dwarfing its usual run of 60,000.

"I have never spoken about my personal experience of domestic violence because I was in [the] media and I felt it would be unfair to expose the other party,' she added.

She also said that she was reluctant to accept Imran's proposal because of what took place during her previous marriage, which ended in 2006 after 15 years.

11:08   Italian marines case: SC allows marine 3-month extension on health grounds
Italian Marine Case: The Supreme Court gives three months extension to Massimiliano Latorre for his stay in Italy on health grounds.

Just two days ago, a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu on Monday recused itself from hearing the home stay period extension plea of one of the two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen, saying it had earlier made adverse remarks against them.

Deciding to entrust adjudication of Massimiliano Latorre's plea to another bench, Justice Dattu cited the bench's December 17 observations while dismissing the two marines' pleas - one for extension of home stay period and the other seeking permission to go home for spending time with family during Christmas - as the ground for recusal.

In the order dismissing the applications, there were no adverse remarks in writing. Yet, the bench decided to adopt the highest standards of fairness - a litigant must not feel the judge is biased against him - and recused from hearing Latorre's fresh application.

09:54   Silencing a sensitive writer
Noted Tamil novelist Perumal Murugan's Facebook page went blank on Tuesday in a virtual closure of his identity as a writer, in a shocking illustration of the growing intolerance of fringe groups constricting public discourse. It is ironic that the author was made to virtually recant to buy peace after the recent controversy over his novel Madhorubhagan, first published in December 2010, purportedly offended the sensibilities of some dominant sections of society in the western 'Kongu' belt of Tamil Nadu.

This, ironically at a time when many parts of the world are uniting in solidarity to uphold freedom of expression in the wake of the terror attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

00:16   Govt proposes ban on sale of loose cigarettes
Brushing aside opposition, the government today moved to amend the anti-smoking law and proposed radical changes, including ban on sale of loose cigarettes and raising the minimum age of a person buying tobacco products to 21 years from existing 18.

It has also proposed raising of fine to Rs 1000 from Rs 200 on smoking in public places as well as recommending removal of designated smoking zones in hotels and restaurants.

These are some of the major recommendations in the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) (Amendment) Bill 2015, which were put out by the Health Ministry today to seek suggestions from the public.

The bill puts to rest speculation about the fate of a panel's recommendations, which had covered most of these issues, as there were reports that the health ministry had developed cold feet following outcry from lobbies representing farmers and tobacco industry.
