19:09   IMA opposes amendments to MTP Act
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) today opposed the proposed amendments to the new Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act  which allows Ayurvedacharyas, Homeopaths and Nurses to conduct MTP (abortion) on pregnant mothers.

"This is apparently incorrectly based on an unscientific study done by Population Council in 2012 which showed that trained nurses and Ayurved physicians provide medical abortion as safely as MBBS doctors.

At the outset, it may be noted that in 2012 when the MTP Act 1971 was in place which does not allow anyone other than an MBBS doctor registered under the Act to conduct abortions, how could the Ayurveda doctors and nurses carry out MTPs as per the study conducted by Population Council. This smells of malpractices in the medical field," said Narendra Saini, secretary general of IMA.

IMA has written a letter to the Prime Minister and Union Health Minister requesting them to withdraw this proposed Bill immediately in the better interest of the health of  the general public.

"Don't think HM or CM considers everyone as their own. Maybe when their own daughters are raped they might act differently", he said.

18:08   Sexual assaults of minor girls: HC raps Karnataka govt, schools
Taking serious note of the rising incidents of sexual assaults of minor girls in schools, the Karnataka High Court today pulled up the education department and private schools and asked them to ensure the safety and security of students.

Hearing a petition filed by private school managements seeking a stay on safety guidelines issued by police, Justice A N Venugopal Gowda said if the education department and school managements do not take action against defaulters, the court would intervene.

It observed that the action taken by education department and managements were not satisfactory and also said, "If they don't take the matter seriously, the court will intervene and initiate day-to-day monitoring."

The judge said the court expects every government servant to take action against those who are inactive or have failed in discharging duties with devotion. "Unless they live up to the expectations, there cannot be effective implementation."

He directed Karnataka Public Instruction Commissioner Mohammed Mohsin to take action against erring officials. He also flayed the education department for not initiating steps to check mushrooming of illegal schools in the state.

"Why are you not taking action against unauthorised schools?" the judge asked, adding that had the education department acted, such incidents (of sexual assaults) would not have taken place.

The BJP will fight the Delhi assembly elections without a chief ministerial face, banking instead on 'Brand Modi' for a repeat of the party's winning performance in Maharashtra and Haryana.

However, the Aam Aadmi Party, seen as its main rival, said it would be a contest between its chief Arvind Kejriwal and Jagdish Mukhi, a Delhi BJP veteran earlier seen as a frontrunner for the CM's chair.

Ravi Shankar Prasad (information technology and law) and Prakash Javadekar (information and broadcasting, and environment) are also handling two ministries each. Modi is looking for more energy quotient in his ministry.

14:12   Review: Akshay Kumar is the real scene stealer of The Shaukeens!
So, should you watch The Shaukeens?

This fallacy is not only disappointing but lazy too.

Director Abhishek Sharma's The Shaukeens is a retelling of Basu Chatterjee's 1982 film and adding The in front and s behind Shaukeen doesn't make that any less conspicuous.  Read

Up until now many users incorrectly thought the double check indicated a message had been seen.

Actually it meant that a message had been received by the handset, not its human owner.

However, WhatsApp's official website has confirmed the messaging service has a new feature, so you'll know when someone has definitely read your message.

Obama wrote the letter to Khamenei last month, the Wall Street Journal said. 11:36   Why Modi will sit alone on the swing
The failure of Narendra Modi's infrastructure plan reflects the larger failure of the Indian imagination, a mindless enumeration of ideas that have little or no bearing on Indian reality. When much of what is built is a half-baked imitation of disparate items tried and tested elsewhere, it becomes hard to fault Mr. Modi.

If the recent image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi swinging on the jhula with Chinese President Xi Jinping was meant to suggest a technological consensus of two great eastern republics, it was a mistaken metaphor. China's advances in technology and infrastructure have moved it much beyond Indian reach, leaving Mr. Modi alone on the swing. With no one to push, India flounders. Read

11:27   US diplomat, Pak expert under probe, security clearances withdrawn
A veteran State Department diplomat and longtime Pakistan expert is under federal investigation as part of a counterintelligence probe and has had her security clearances withdrawn, according to U.S. officials.

The FBI searched the Northwest Washington home of Robin L Raphel last month, and her State Department office was also examined and sealed, officials said.

Raphel, a fixture in Washington's diplomatic and think-tank circles, was placed on administrative leave last month, and her contract with the State Department was allowed to expire this week.

Two US officials described the investigation as a counterintelligence matter, which typically involves allegations of spying on behalf of foreign governments.

The exact nature of the investigation involving Raphel remains unclear. She has not been charged. A spokesman for Raphel said she was cooperating with investigators but has not been told the "scope or nature or that she is the target' of any probe.

03:36   Why can't US kill Islamic State's top commanders?
The United States and its coalition partners have conducted close to 800 airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria, hitting command-and-control facilities, training compounds, armored vehicles, oil refineries, supply trucks, artillery pieces, and bunkers.

But there's a notable absence from the target list: the Islamic State's top leaders.

Since the Obama administration's bombing campaign began in Iraq on Aug. 8, the United States has not conducted what's called a "decapitation strike," an attack specifically aimed at taking out a member of the Islamic State's senior military commanders.

The tactic's absence from the military campaign is particularly glaring because hunting high-value militants has become a cornerstone of the Obama administration's counterterrorism strategy in other parts of the world.

02:32   Mumbai-bound Air India flight makes emergency landing in Kolkata
An Air India flight en route to Mumbai from Bangkok made an emergency landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Thursday night, after the pilot reported an on-board medical emergency, airport sources said.

The pilot first contacted the Air Traffic Control shortly after 9 pm and informed that a passenger had fallen sick and he would be making an emergency landing, the sources said.

Accordingly, a medical team was kept on standby and all necessary arrangements were made. But, the pilot again informed the ATC that the condition of the passenger was grim and he wanted some immediate advice from the doctors over the radio message, they said.

In a rare move at the airport, doctors of the medical team were then taken to the ATC tower and they advised the pilot after he narrated the condition of the patient, sources said.

The flight made the emergency landing with 244 passengers at around 10 pm and the sick passenger J Babariya (58), a resident of Gujarat, and two of his associates got down.

Babariya was soon rushed to a local private hospital where he later died, airport police officers said.

The flight left for Mumbai soon after midnight.

01:43   Obama has written to Iran supreme leader: report
US President Barack Obama has secretly written to Iran's supreme leader to discuss possible cooperation in the fight against Islamic militants providing there is a nuclear deal, a US daily reported today.

Obama sent the letter last month to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and described what he called a "shared fight" against the Sunni militant Islamic State group, the Wall Street Journal said, citing "people briefed on the correspondence."

Iran, a Shiite Muslim state, and the United States have not had diplomatic ties since the 1979 storming of the American embassy in Tehran and the 444-day hostage crisis.

But there has been a growing recognition that Iran -- still dubbed by Washington a state sponsor of terrorism -- could play a role in helping to restore stability in countries such as Iraq and Syria.

Refusing to deny or confirm the report, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said: "I'm not in a position to discuss private correspondence between the president and any world leader."

Iran and the United States are currently negotiating a complex deal to rein in Iranian nuclear ambitions in exchange for an easing of crippling international sanctions against the Islamic republic.

Earnest repeated that on the sidelines of those talks, being led by a group of powers known as the P5+1, Iran and the US had discussed the threat of the militants.

01:39   US soldier receives highest award 151 years later
An American soldier whose last stand heroics helped alter the fate of his country 151 years ago was awarded the nation's highest military honor today by President Barack Obama.

The Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded to First Lt Alonzo H Cushing for ordering his artillery battery to continue firing its cannons during a pivotal all-out assault in the American Civil War.

Cushing was cool and competent under fire and said he would "fight it out or die in the attempt" as 10,000 southern rebels charged his position, Obama said during the award ceremony at the White House.

The 22-year-old kept directing cannon fire despite being shot twice in the stomach and shoulder. He would die during the attack in 1863.

Obama said the award was an acknowledgement of one of the "thousands of unknown young soldiers, committing unsung acts of heroism" who saved the nation during the country's internal conflict.

Half-a-million soldiers were killed in the American Civil War, that saw the northern states triumph over the slave-owning south, ending slavery in the US.

00:31   FBI Shuts Down Silk Road 2
The Silk Road 2, the site that sprang up after the original was shut down by the FBI in October 2013, is down, after being seized by law enforcement.

According to a notice put on the Silk Road 2 site, it was shut down by a joint operation by the FBI, ICE Homeland Security Investigations, and European law enforcement agencies acting through Europol and Eurojust.

The FBI arrested Blake Benthall, who allegedly ran the site under the handle Defcon, yesterday in San Francisco.

"Blake Benthall attempted to resurrect Silk Road, a secret website that law enforcement seized last year, by running Silk Road 2.0, a nearly identical criminal enterprise," Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

"Lets be clear, this Silk Road, in whatever form, is the road to prison."

00:24   Humanity humiliated by Pakistan lynching: Vatican
A top Vatican official has described the lynching of a Christian couple in Pakistan as a humiliation for all of humanity.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the chair of the Roman Catholic church's council for interfaith dialogue, said he had been profoundly shocked by accounts of the horrific death of Shehzad Masih and Shama Bibi.

Shehzad, a bonded labourer, and his pregnant wife were beaten by a mob of 1,500 people then thrown on top of a lit furnace on Tuesday in a crazed reaction to rumours they had thrown pages of the Koran into the garbage.

"How can we remain impassive before such crimes, justified in the name of religion?," Tauran said on Vatican Radio, urging Muslim leaders in Pakistan to vigorously condemn the killings.

"It is all of humanity that is humiliated," he said, adding: "The first victims are in fact Muslims because these misdeeds give an image of Islam that is terrible."

00:22   Spain arrests 10 for 'terrorist' Twitter, Facebook posts
Spanish police arrested 10 people accused of glorifying terrorism and inciting attacks by the Basque group ETA in Twitter and Facebook messages, authorities said today.

The suspects are accused of "using social networks to commit suspected crimes of glorifying terrorism by ETA and of humiliating the victims of terrorism", the interior ministry said in a statement.

Police detained them in various regions of central and northern Spain, seizing their mobile phones to check them for messages, it said. Two of those detained are minors while the others are aged between 19 and 62.

They posted messages "calling for ETA to resume its attacks, praising attacks already carried out and glorifying convicted ETA terrorists", with some urging attacks on particular individuals, the ministry said.

ETA in 2011 declared an end to its armed activity after four decades of bombings and shootings that left 829 people dead in a campaign for an independent Basque homeland.

Police arrested 20 suspects in similar raids in April after vowing to crack down on incitement to violence online.

00:22   Attacks in Iraq, mainly targeting troops, kill 13
A series of attacks, mainly against Iraqi troops, killed 13 people in Baghdad and in the country's west today as the government pressed ahead with a draft law meant to establish a community-based national guard force in efforts to mobilise Iraq's Sunni minority in the battle against the Islamic State group.

In one of today's attacks, a suicide bomber drove his explosives-laden car into an army checkpoint near the town of al-Baghdadi, about 180 kilometers northwest of Baghdad, killing five soldiers and wounding 12, police officials said.

In Baghdad, a bomb blast in a commercial street in the western district of Ghazaliyah killed four people and wounded eight, while a bomb near a line of shops killed two people in the city's northwest, the officials said.

Earlier, gunmen in a speeding car opened fire on an army checkpoint in Baghdad's western suburb of Abu Ghraib, killing two soldiers.

Hospital officials confirmed the causalities. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media.
