22:30   CNN chief Jim Walton calls it a day
CNN chief Jim Walton is resigning, saying the beleaguered news network needs a different leader with a new perspective.

Walton built CNN into a profitable international news organisation in his 10 years as boss. But the US flagship network has suffered through historically poor ratings in the past few months and is entrenched in third place behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC in prime time.

He announced his decision in an email to staff today.

CNN historically suffers in the ratings during slow news periods, a fate Fox and MSNBC have minimised with partisan shows in prime time. Walton has resisted this approach, believing CNN's strength lies in being a nonpartisan news source.

He's 54 and has worked at CNN since 1981.

22:05   Obama gives Israel $70 million military aid
President Barack Obama has said that he is releasing an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to upstage Republican rival Mitt Romney's trip to Israel this weekend.

The stepped-up US aid, first announced in May, will go to help Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system. The system, known as Iron Dome, has proved successful at stopping rocket attacks fired at Israeli civilians from
close range, including from Gaza.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the president.

Obama announced the new military assistance as he signed a bill in the Oval Office expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Obama said the bill underscores the United States' "unshakable commitment to Israel."

15:42   Now, Taiwan's flag taken down at Olympics
At the London, Olympics, another country sees red over their flag.

Taiwan today expressed anger after Olympics organisers said the island's national flag had been taken down from a London display at the request of the Chinese embassy.

The flag was removed from a row hanging over Regent Street, one of London's busiest shopping areas, and replaced on Wednesday with that of Taiwan's Olympic committee.

Titles and flags are sensitive issues between Taiwan and China, as Beijing still claims the self-ruled island as part of its territory despite their split in 1949 after a civil war. Taiwan cannot display its national flag at international sporting events and other events as most countries formally recognise Beijing over Taipei.

12:56   Japan stuns Spain in football, Brazil edges Egypt
Japan upset Spain 1-0 on the first day of the men's Olympic football tournament, while Brazil held on for a 3-2 victory over Egypt and host Britain had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Senegal.

Uruguay and Belarus also won as the tournament got under way with eight matches the day before today's opening ceremony. Japan pulled off the surprising win after outplaying gold-medal favorite Spain, which went a man down in the first half and couldn't fight back.

Brazil got three first-half goals but nearly squandered the lead in the second, escaping with the victory to begin its quest for its first gold in Olympic football.
Britain's debut was spoiled by a late goal conceded in the draw with Senegal.

Japan got the winner in Glasgow when forward Yui Otsu broke away from his marker during a corner in the 34th minute and the ball landed right at his feet for a simple tap-in past Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.

Spain was reduced to 10 men just a few minutes after the goal when center back Inigo Martinez was sent off for a foul while trying to stop a Japanese player from scoring.

"It was an important win for us," Japan captain Maya Yoshida said. "Spain are a very strong team in the group and we played well against them. We worked really hard and we will enjoy our victory. We can get a lot of confidence from this." The loss comes as a blow for Spain's under-23 team, which wants to win Olympic gold to add to the World Cup and European Championship titles held by the country's full national team.

He further said that the Lokpal Bill was, is and will always be the primary demand of India Against Corruption. "First Lokpal and then inquiry against the 15 corrupt ministers... The main issue is the Lokpal Bill."

12:01   Men misbehave with women journos at Anna's fast
Team Anna's indefinite fast against the UPA government entered the third day today with crowds still keeping away from the protest site where some people misbehaved with women media persons.

The crowd count was around 300 at 11 am when Anna Hazare took the dais along with his close aides at Jantar Mantar. The protest site wore a deserted look with people seen only near the stage.

Fasting Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal, a diabetic whose health condition worsened a bit, made a brief appearance at the dais while others like Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai sat with Hazare.

Another Team Anna member Kiran Bedi was not present. She tweeted, "today in Pune for two prior committed speaking engagements. Perhaps a bit of a break of a different kind".

As Hazare took to the stage, some people misbehaved with media persons and even pushed them. After journalists complained to police, organisers announced that those indulging in such acts were not with the movement and police should take action against them.

Organisers blamed the incident on miscreants who are out to disrupt the fast. Later, journalists identified a person who misbehaved with a woman media person and handed him over to volunteers.

Two women journalists said that they were pushed by some men who misbehaved with them. Crowds have been keeping away from the indefinite fast raising questions as to whether the movement has lost its steam.

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to communalise the issue.

"The BJP has been trying to communalise the situation in Assam from the very beginning, by raising the issue of illegal migrants. In fact, there are Muslim illegal migrants, and there are Hindu illegal migrants also," he said.

"Unfortunately, the BJP only talks of Muslim illegal migrants, and the perception that has come to people's minds in the country is, that there are only Muslim illegal migrants," he added.

He further said that Assam is a 'sensitive' state, and that the state government had initially tried to quell the rioting with just the local administration's help.

From the Kashmir Monitor: The statement made by the General Officer Commanding of the 15th Corps, Lt Gen Om Prakash, about the tragic death of a youth from Aloosa village of Bandipora, giving a clean chit to his soldiers, speaks volumes about the arrogance and insensitivity of the army in Kashmir, where human life has lost all the value and worth that it otherwise deserved.

04:11   Almost two-thirds of US is facing drought!
The drought in America's breadbasket is intensifying at an unprecedented rate, experts have warned, driving concern food prices could soar if crops in the world's key producer are decimated.

The US Drought Monitor yesterday reported almost a threefold increase in areas of extreme drought over the past week in the nine Midwestern states where three quarters of the country's corn and soybean crops are produced.

"That expansion of D3 or extreme conditions intensified quite rapidly and we went from 11.9 per cent to 28.9 per cent in just one week," Brian Fuchs, a climatologist and Drought Monitor author, told AFP.

"For myself, studying drought, that's rapid. We've seen a lot of things developing with this drought that were unprecedented, especially the speed."

Almost two-thirds of the continental United States is now suffering drought conditions, the largest area recorded since the Drought Monitor project started in 1999.

"If you are following the grain prices here in the US, they are reflecting the anticipated shortages with a price increase," Fuchs said.

02:29   Moscow anti-Putin rally draws 1,500
About 1,500 citizens and members of the motley opposition movement packed a central Moscow square to protest the detention of people arrested after clashes on the eve of Putin's inauguration to a third term in May.

A Moscow demonstration on May 6 erupted into street battles with riot police in some of the worst violence since unprecedented protests against Putin's decade-long rule first shook Russia late last year.

Investigators said earlier today they had detained two more activists as part of their probe. Those detentions came on top of 14 activists already under investigation including 12 who have been arrested.

Thursday's rally grew into a show of support for other jailed activists including three members of all-girl punk band Pussy Riot who called for Putin's ouster in an unsanctioned Moscow cathedral performance in February.

02:23   Pop music has become louder, less original
Your mother was right: Pop music has become louder and less original over the years.

At least, this is the conclusion of a computer analysis of nearly half-a-million songs recorded between 1955 and 2010 and reported in Nature Scientific Reports Thursday.

"We have been able to show how the global loudness level of music recordings has consistently increased over the years," study author Joan Serra of the Spanish National Research Council said in an email exchange.

Similarly, the team found the diversity of chords and melodies has "consistently diminished in the last 50 years".

"This yields a clear recipe for contemporising old songs: using more common chord changes, changing the song's instrumentation, and record it louder," said Serra.

The study spanned a variety of genres, including rock, pop, hip hop, metal and electronic.

It mentioned no songs by name, simply analysing the music in algorithms of numbers and symbols in search of patterns.

02:22   Convicted Saudi student seeks re-trial
A former student from Saudi Arabia convicted in a failed US bomb plot has asked for a new trial.

Attorneys for Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari filed the request on Thursday in federal court.

Jurors convicted Aldawsari last month of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Prosecutors say Aldawsari, who was arrested in 2011, had researched possible targets, including power plants and the Dallas home of former President George W Bush.

His lawyers are challenging prosecution statements that the 22-year-old Aldawsari plotted an attack since he was a child. They also say there is no evidence that he possessed a weapon of mass destruction.

Sentencing is on October 9. Aldawsari faces up to life in prison.

00:32   Days of Assad regime are numbered: US
Days of the Assad regime are now numbered, the White House said today observing that this makes all the more important to have an alternative and transition in place as quickly as possible.

"We need to move quickly to look at what Syria can and should be in a post-Assad world, work with our partners, work with the opposition to help create that transition, because Assad's days are surely numbered," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters.

"As we've seen, it's clear that he (the Syrian President) is losing control of Syria. The momentum against the Assad regime continues with defections throughout the government.

As we have seen in recent days, increasing numbers of formerly pro-regime Syrians, officials in the government, ambassadors to foreign countries, military personnel, high ranking military personnel are recognizing that to stand in solidarity with Assad is to stand against the Syrian people," he said.

"That's why it's time for the Syrian people and the international community to focus on what comes next, as I said," he added.
