23:34   Obama visits US mosque, interact with community leaders
Amid growing anti-Muslim rhetoric in the US poll campaign, President Barack Obama today made his first visit to a mosque as part of his effort to assure the religious minority of their safety and security and celebrate religious diversity of the country.

However, Obama was greeted by two protesters as his motorcade rolled up to the Islamic Society of Baltimore.

"They were holding three signs, oddly, calling on Obama to not find Hamas," a White House pool report said.

A third protester with a bullhorn was also outside the fence of the Islamic Center. Soon after arriving at the mosque, Obama held a roundtable with eminent Muslim community leaders. Obama's mosque visit in the vicinity of the national capital comes amid increasing backlash against the Muslim community in particular the anti-Islam rhetoric coming from the Republican presidential candidates.

"We welcome his visit. Our organisation has advocated it for quite some time. It's an especially important gesture given the divisive climate we have witnessed in this election year," Rabiah Ahmed of the Islamic Society of Baltimore told PTI .

20:28   Obama to rebut GOP Muslim rhetoric in first US mosque visit
Seeking to rebut what he views as perilous election-year bombast about Muslims, President Barack Obama heads Wednesday to a mosque in Baltimore, his first visit to such a site in the United States.

At the Islamic Society of Baltimore, a 47-year-old mosque with thousands of attendees, Obama plans to herald the contributions of Muslims to American society while issuing a forceful counterpoint to the language favored by some Republican presidential candidates like Donald Trump, according to White House officials.

"We've seen an alarming willingness on the part of some Republicans to try to marginalize law-abiding, patriotic Muslim Americans," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Tuesday.

19:28   America has a secret anti-ISIS airstrip
The rutted road stretches into the distance across the plains of Hasakah. Herdsmen watch over their few dozen sheep. A scattering of oil pumps nod lazily as they extract a few dollars of crude from deep below. Above, the contrails left by coalition warplanes drift across the blue sky in hazy circles.

We bump through the mud-brick villages. Wide-eyed children stop playing marbles in the dirt to gaze at us. Old men wearing keffiyehs, the traditional red and white headscarf, peer suspiciously. This corner of northern Syria -- close to the border with Iraq -- is a mix of Arab tribes and Kurds, Muslims and Christians. It has long been neglected, despite its oil and farming, by the Syrian regime hundreds of miles away in Damascus. But in the war against ISIS, Hasakah is suddenly a place of interest, and especially for the Pentagon.

Our destination is an airstrip used for crop-spraying. From satellite images we've worked out where it is.

It would be easy to miss: just a strip of concrete that almost sinks into the dark soil. But for all its modesty, this is the United States' latest outpost in its deepening campaign against ISIS.

18:31   People should be allowed to eat beef if they want to: NITI Aayog CEO
Senior bureaucrat Amitabh Kant is of the view that in a democracy like India people should be allowed to eat beef if they want to, asserting there should be a freedom of choice.

Well, I believe we are in a democracy which allows people to decide what they want to say, which would allow people to decide what they want to eat, said Kant, who is Secretary in Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion in Government of India, at an NDTV event.

Asked if that includes eating beef, he shot back, Of course. There should be freedom of choice. I said it in the context, the fact that I come from Kerala cadre, my neighbour was a Nair, my right hand neighbour was a Brahmin, they all ate beef. We all grew up eating beef in that state. There should be freedom of choice.

Kant, who is also the acting CEO of NITI Aayog, also took a swipe at Bollywood actor Aamir Khan whom he had countered on his remarks over climate of intolerance in the country.

I think everyone should have the freedom to say what they want except when he is the brand ambassador of Incredible India, said Kant.

Interestingly, according to the data released by Counterpoint Research, e-commerce has had a major role to play in the strong growth of smartphone sales in India, with at least one out of three instruments being sold online.

15:24   Kejriwal: MCD earns crores! Where has the money gone? It's a scam!
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday addressed media persons over the ongoing strike by municipal corporation employees.

Here are highlights of his speech:

* I have been tracking the protests in Delhi. It is unfortunate that MCD has been locked up. The reason being that its employees haven't been paid in months.

* Two kinds of politics has been visible -- on one end Karamcharis went on strike and on the other BJP went around littering streets all over Delhi.

* The impression that has been given is that the Delhi government is behind this. I have analysed all the figures. Delhi government doesn't owe a single rupee to the MCD.

* We gave North MCD nearly Rs 893 crore. We gave them double their last year's budget. If salaries were being given till last year, why is their a shortfall now?

* We gave East MCD Rs 468 crore. Last year they had Rs 368 cr and they still paid the salries. How is it that they don't have money? Where has the money gone?

* There is a very big scam. Either this money has been diverted somewhere else or has ended up in corrupt hands.

* Delhi government has the mandate to check MCD's financial records. But they refused to show.

* Entire Delhi pays house tax, parking tax, toll tax, advertisement, conversion, electricity tax, etc... all of which goes to the MCD. All that money is stolen. East MCD (represents 1/3 of Delhi) earns Rs 12000 crore from advertisement hoarding, 2.5 in parking charges. And they say, they have no money?

"I know her but it's wrong to say that I assaulted her," Sardar said.

She also alleged that Sardar forced her to abort their child last year against her wishes and later refused to marry her.
Sardar said these are serious allegations and he will retort back at an appropriate time as he is presently focussing on the ongoing Hockey India League, where he is captaining the Jaypee Punjab Warriors side.

"Presently my full concentration in on the ongoing HIL. After last night's match, I came to know about the allegations. Tomorrow I have a match again. It is a very serious allegation. I will look at the report ans consult my lawyer. I will answer all questions but I need some time," he said.

On Monday, the Taliban triumphantly announced that they had assassinated him with two bullets to the head.

Wasil Ahmad was 10 years old.

He was gunned down in Tirin Kot city, the capital of southern Oruzgan Province, just a few months after leaving militia life and enrolling in school as a fourth grader.

11:12   We should be free to express ourselves: Irrfan on intolerance
Actor Irrfan Khan feels celebrities are also part of this country and they have every right to express their opinion on national issues.

Irrfan, the latest star to join the ongoing intolerance debate, said shutting up one's mouth is not a healthy sign for a growing society.

"I find it very strange when few people say that actors should act and they should not express their opinions on issues. Everybody has the right to speak their mind and concerns. If you are told to shut up then this is not a sign of a growing and healthy society," he said during the NDTV Indian of the Year Award here last night.

The 49-year-old "Life of Pi" star feels expressing opinion is an individual approach and it is fine if someone does not express his/her opinion.

"That's an individual thing. Some people have an instinct of reacting on things while some people don't.

"When Ang Lee came here, he was asked about his country's politics. And he said we don't speak about politics. This issue (intolerance) has been in news. We should feel safe to say whatever we want to say. We should be free to express ourselves."

Imposing a stay on the Bombay high court order, the Supreme Court has allowed Maharashtra to hold a 'Make in India' programme, to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Girgaum Chowpatty beach in Mumbai.

The Maharashtra government had filed an application before the high court after a committee, appointed by the court in 2001 to monitor activities on the beach, asked the government to seek the court's permission.

The application stated that it proposed to host a 'Maharashtra Night' on February 14 at Girgaum Chowpatty to showcase its art and culture and industrial development, adding that the event would end with a laser show and fireworks display.

The high court, while refusing to grant permission to the state government, had observed that permitting the government to hold such functions on the beach will be faulty to the guidelines of the committee.

10:07   Rupee again breaches 68-mark, down 28 paise in early trade
The rupee again broke below the 68-mark by depreciating 28 paise to trade at 68.26 against the dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange, due to increased demand for the American unit from importers and banks amid a lower opening in the domestic equity market.

This was the third consecutive day of fall.

Moreover, sustained capital outflows also weighed on the domestic unit but dollar's weakness against some currencies overseas limited the rupee's fall, forex dealers said.

The rupee had lost 14 paise to close at 67.98 per dollar in yesterday's trade on sustained demand for the US currency from banks and importers amid a massive fall in equities as the Reserve Bank kept its key policy rate unchanged.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex tumbled by 275.35 points or 1.12 per cent to 24,263.65 in early trade.

09:02   Modi intervenes after 11-yr-old Unnao boy complains about long route to school
A letter by 11-year-old Nayan Sinha from Unnao to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last September has put Railway officials in quite a fix, after the latter stepped in to address the issues raised by the school boy.

Nayan, a class VII student of Chandrashekhar Azad Intermediate College in Unnao, wrote to PM Modi last September complaining of the absence of a crossing at the railway tracks between his locality had forced over 200 students to take a longer route every morning to school.

This, Nayan told the prime minister, was resulting in him being punished regularly by the school for reaching late. The letter prompted Modi to take up the issue with the Railway Ministry.

According to Nayan, he and several other students from his locality, do not cross the unmanned crossing and take a route which is about two kilometres longer than the earlier route. The railway track is about 100 metres from Nayans house.

"I never cross the railway tracks as my parents have asked me not to. But the alternate route is much longer, so I reach school late and get punished on most days. In September last year, without informing anyone, I posted the letter to the Prime Minister. I wrote about how I have to walk extra to reach school," Nayan told a daily.

At least three persons were shot dead and 12 others injured today during clashes between security forces and staff of Pakistan International Airlines protesting at Karachi's international airport against the planned privatisation of the ailing national flag carrier.

The clashes led to the disruption and then suspension of many domestic and international flights around the country's main airports. The incident took place near the Jinnah International Airport here after the joint action committee which represents all unions of PIA gave a complete strike call for today despite the government enforcing Essential Services Maintenance Act under which all union activities were suspended and employees told to report on duty.

Though two of the protesters died of bullet wounds, Rangers and police denied opening fire at the site. A third patient succumbed to his wounds later in the night.

01:20   'Haqqani network remains most capable threat in Afghanistan'
The dreaded Haqqani network remains the most capable threat to US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, planning and executing the high-profile attacks, the top American General in the war-torn nation said today.

Commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan General John F Campbell, testifying before the House Armed Services Committee, said the al-Qaeda has been significantly weakened, but as evidenced by the recent discovery of its camp on the southern border, the group is certainly not extinct. "The Haqqani network remains the most capable threat to US and Coalition forces, planning and executing the most violent high profile attacks in Kabul," he said. Haqqani network, which is linked to al-Qaeda, has been blamed for several deadly attacks against Western and Indian interests in Afghanistan, including the 2008 bombing of the Indian mission in Kabul. Campbell said 70 per cent of Afghan territory is under government control, while Taliban controls only two per cent.

"Of the 407 district centers, eight (or two per cent) are under insurgent control. We assess that another 18 (or 4 per cent) are under what we call insurgent influence," he said. Often, these district centers are in remote and sparsely populated areas that security forces are not able to access very often in force, he noted.

Alleging that the Russian aggression in Ukraine has left countries in Eastern Europe concerned about their safety, US President Barack Obama today announced to strengthen America's robust military posture in the region.

"As we approach the 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw, it is clear that the United States and our allies must do more to advance our common defense in support of a Europe that is whole, free, and at peace," Obama said. That is why today the US administration has announced a four-fold increase in European Reassurance Initiative funding for Fiscal Year 2017, he said.

The Pentagon quadrupled its budget from $789 million to more than $3.4 billion for military spending in Europe. "An ERI funding level of $ 3.4 billion will enable the United States to strengthen our robust military posture in Europe and improve our ability to uphold our Article 5 commitments to NATO members," Obama said.
