Smartphone-obsessed India has toppled the US to become the second-largest market for the device, after China, reports Itika Sharma Punit in Quartz India.

Quoting new data released by Counterpoint Research, Itika writes that smartphone shipments to India in the October-December quarter grew 15 per cent, which put its user base at 220 million.

According to Counterpoint Research, in 2015 alone, over 100 million smartphones were shipped to India, which is over 23 pc more than the previous year, Itika writes.

India's surge in the smartphone market was something that was waiting to happen. The American marketing research firm IDC had predicted in August 2015 that India will overtake America by 2017.

Interestingly, according to the data released by Counterpoint Research, e-commerce has had a major role to play in the strong growth of smartphone sales in India, with at least one out of three instruments being sold online.
