22:55   Andy Coulson pleads not guilty in UK perjury trial
Former UK tabloid editor and British Prime Minister David Cameron's ex-communications chief Andy Coulson has pleaded not guilty as his perjury trial began in Scotland today.

The former 'News of the World' editor, who was found guilty of phone hacking last year and sentenced to 18 months for conspiracy to hack phones, is accused of lying at a trial of Scottish socialist politician Tommy Sheridan at the High Court in Glasgow in 2010.

Coulson, dressed in a grey suit, blue shirt and green tie, sat in the dock as the charges against him were read out at the High Court in Edinburgh.

It said the 47-year-old journalist had lied about his knowledge of alleged phone hacking by the paper's former royal editor and a private investigator used by the paper in 2006. In a separate count, it said he falsely testified that he had no knowledge of payments allegedly made to corrupt police officers by staff at the paper when he was editor.

About 900 Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants made it to shore in Indonesia and Thailand on Friday, as Myanmar undermined calls for a coordinated response to South-east Asias human-trafficking crisis by threatening to boycott a planned summit.

The Indonesian and Malaysian policy of turning away stricken boats filled with Bangladeshis and ethnic Rohingya from Myanmar has been met with outrage, including from Washington and the United Nations.

Activists estimate up to 8,000 migrants may be at sea in South-east Asia, with horrific tales emerging of passengers abandoned by abusive smugglers, horribly cramped conditions, starvation and death.

19:06   ISIS seizes government HQ in Iraq's Ramadi
ISIS has launched a wide-scale attack on Iraqi security forces in Ramadi in an apparent attempt to take the rest of the key central Iraqi city, a provincial governor said Friday.

The ISIS offensive, which started Thursday night and continued into Friday, included suicide attacks with explosive-rigged cars near security posts in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, Anbar Gov. Suhaib Al-Rawi said.

Iraqi security forces were clashing with ISIS fighters inside the city on Friday.

Ramadi is just 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Baghdad and in the middle of Iraq's Sunni heartland. ISIS is the Sunni extremist group that took over parts of Syria and Iraq -- including most of Anbar province -- for what it calls its Islamic caliphate.

ISIS has fought Iraqi security forces for control of Ramadi for months, since ISIS took parts of the city last year. Each side has since alternated gains and losses in territory.

17:58   Tharoor on Sunanda probe: Will reveal all after investigation is over
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reacts to reports of a polygraph test on three of the key witnesses. Tharoor said he would "cooperate 100 per cent with the probe and will say all after the probe is over."

Investigators probing Sunanda Pushkar death case have sought lie detector test of three key witnesses to verify certain evidence, Delhi Police chief B S Bassi today said, even as there is indication that around a dozen witnesses may be asked to undergo the examination.

The Delhi Police has approached a city court for permission to carry out polygraph test on Narain Singh, who is domestic help of Sunanda's husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, driver Bajrangi and family friend Sanjay Dewan.

Asked whether investigators were planning to subject Tharoor to polygraph test, Bassi said he would not like to "speculate".

Sunanda was found dead in the hotel suite on January 17 last year, a day after she was involved in a spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar on Twitter over the latter's alleged affair with Tharoor. Bassi said investigators are waiting a report from Federal Bureau of Investigation to know about the kind of poison found in Sunanda's body.

PM Modi and Chinese premier Li Keqiang pose for pictures with the participants of the Taichi-Yoga performance. Modi taking selfies with the kids as well. The EC forbids the display of party symbols on polling day. The Congress had filed a complaint with the EC, but it was rejected.

Modi then takes a selfie with premier Li and then thereafter poses with him and Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel with the backdrop of the Temple of Heaven.

15:11   PM springs a surprise with e-visas for Chinese
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in his address to students at Tsinghua University announced that Chinese tourists will be granted e-visas -- something that was not mentioned in the joint statement between India and China released earlier in the day.

But, says Sheela Bhatt/Rediff.com,  according to an MEA source, "There is no goof-up over the e-visa issue with China. India has taken the decision. The decision to grant e-visa to Chinese tourists is not a consequence of (high-level) talks."

What the MEA source tried to suggest is that Prime Minister Modi's announcement of granting e-visa to the Chinese is final.

And, Chinese tourists and businessmen have reason to rejoice because when the visa regime is relaxed it adds to the level of mutual trust, increases people-to-people contacts and also brings business on both sides.

12:59   Signs of a thaw in Modi's chilly relationship with the media
Last fortnight, top editors in Delhi were invited to two dinners at finance minister Arun Jaitley's residence. The guest of honour at both the dinners was the PM.

Narendra Modi was relaxed on  both occasions and replied to innumerable questions from the media ranging from foreign policy to the Land Bill.

The media came away from the dinner with the feeling that Modi was in total control of the situation at home. Land reforms, GST, China visit, Ghar vapasi, RSS, and other issues were the highlights of the meetings -- all of which was of course, kept off record.

Months after the BJP won and Modi became PM, he has been at pains to to keep the media at bay. Not a single private media organisation is invited to cover the PM's foreign visits and nor does he grant interviews to the Indian media. Time magazine, yes, not Indian media.

Now, that a year has gone by and its time for stock taking by the media, there may be signs of a thaw in the chilly relationship.

12:49   Will Modi attend Jaya's swearing-in ceremony?
And in India, the buzz in the corridors of power in Dilli is whether PM Modi will attend J Jayalalitha's swearing-in ceremony as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu on May 22. In 2011, Modi attended Jaya's swearing-in in Chennai, but Jaya did not return the courtesy and skipped Modi's swearing-in ceremony as PM in New Delhi last year.

To keep the political pot boiling with speculation, the BJP has floated a theory  that Modi will in fact attend the swearing in and utilise the occasion to strengthen the party ties with the AIADMK. The BJP needs to get 11 votes in the Rajya Sabha to pass crucial bills and also to ensure AIADMK does not cozy up with the Congress.

The second route through the Himalayan pass of Nathu La, 4,000 metres above sea level, will allow more Indians to undertake the pilgrimage, in addition to the existing Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand.

The only route - Lipulekh Pass - was badly damaged in the floods in Uttarakhand in 2013. The route through Nathu La Pass will facilitate comfortable travel for Indian pilgrims by buses, especially for elderly Indian citizens, though conditions in the Himalayan region with less oxygen levels still pose a challenge.

12:15   King's velvety voice inspired generations
The Mississippi native's reign as "king of the blues' lasted more than six decades and straddled two centuries, influencing a generation of rock and blues musicians, from Eric Clapton (pictured) and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to Sheryl Crow and John Mayer.

His life was the subject of the documentary "B.B. King: The Life of Riley,' and the inspiration for the The B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, which opened in 2008.

King's enduring legacy came from his refusal to slow down even after cementing his status as an American music icon. Even with a long list of honors to his name -- Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Presidential Medal of Freedom -- he maintained a relentless touring schedule well into his 80s.

10:52   Modi@Beijing: China is our most strategic partner
PM Narendra Modi's media statement

Excellency, Li Keqiang,

Members of the Press,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let me start by expressing my deep gratitude to President Xi, Premier Li and the people of China for the exceptional welcome and hospitality.

I am very grateful to President Xi for his special gesture of hosting me in Xian; and, for showing me the city's extraordinary heritage. It is a treasure of the world.

Xian is also a symbol of our ancient spiritual and cultural links. I have a personal connection with Xian through Monk Xuan Zang.

He visited my hometown 1400 years ago.I am pleased to visit China in the first year of my Government. This is one of our most important strategic partnerships. The reason is obvious. The re-emergence of India and China and their relationship will have a profound impact on the two countries and the course of this century.

Our relationship has been complex in recent decades.

But, we have a historic responsibility to turn this relationship into a source of strength for each other and a force of good for the world.

We are committed to set a new direction between the two largest Asian countries.

I believe that my discussions with President Xi and Premier Li have advanced our relationship in that direction. Our conversations were candid, constructive and friendly. We covered all issues, including those that trouble smooth development of our relations.

I stressed the need for China to reconsider its approach on some of the issues that hold us back from realizing full potential of our partnership. I suggested that China should take a strategic and long term view of our relations. I found the Chinese leadership responsive.

On the boundary question, we agreed that we continue to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution. We both reiterated our strong commitment to make all efforts to maintain peace and tranquility in the border region.

I found sensitivity to our concerns on this issue; and, interest in further intensifying confidence building measures. I also reiterated the importance of clarification of Line of Actual Control in this regard.

I sought tangible progress on issues relating to visa policy and trans-border rivers. I also discussed some of our regional concerns. We agreed that as we move ahead, we should be sensitive to each other's interests; strengthen mutual trust and confidence; continue to manage our difference with maturity; and, seek solutions to outstanding issues.

Our decision to enhance strategic communication and coordination on our region is especially significant.

Bilateral cooperation was a very important part of our discussion. We have set a high level of ambition for our economic partnership. We see enormous bilateral opportunities and many similar challenges, like urbanization. We are pleased with the progress on the commitments from the Summit last September.

This includes cooperation in the Railways, where we have identified specific projects, and the two Chinese industrial parks in Gujarat and Maharashtra. I am pleased that the two chief ministers are here with me.

Both leaders were very supportive about increased Chinese participation in our Make in India mission and infrastructure sector. In Shanghai tomorrow, we will see over twenty ventures in the private sector take concrete shape.

President Xi and Premier Li were very receptive to the specific concerns I had raised on our growing trade deficit. We look forward to early impact on the ground.

An area of high priority for us is people-to-people contacts. Indians and Chinese don't know each other well, much less understand each other.

We have decided to take the relationship out of the narrow confines of governments in the national capitals to states, cities and our people.

For the first time, India has launched a State and Provincial Leaders' Forum with any country. This is consistent with my firm commitment to cooperative federalism in India.

This is the Year of India in China; the next one will be the Year of China in India. This will expand tourism between our two countries.

We are establishing a Centre for Gandhian and Indian Studies in Shanghai, a Yoga College in Kunming and a bilateral Think-Tanks Forum.

The Nathu La route for Indian pilgrims to visit Kailash Mansarovar will become operational in June. I want to thank China for that. Our decision to open a consulates in Chengdu and Chennai reflects growing mutual confidence and shared commitment to expand our relationship.

These steps will help make our relationship more broad-based and people-centric.

Finally, we have many common global and regional interests. For example, we have a shared interest in the outcome of the international climate change negotiations. We are both trying to strengthen regional connectivity.

Terrorism is a shared threat. Instability in West Asia matters to both of us. Peace and progress in Afghanistan benefits us both. I am confident that our international partnership will deepen.

Today, we have signed over 20 agreements, covering diverse areas of cooperation. This shows the depth and maturity of our relationship and the positive direction of our partnership.

This has been a very productive and positive visit.I look forward to working with President Xi and Premier Li.

I have welcomed President Xi's proposal to hold regular summits to realize our vision for the relationship. I have also invited Premier Li to visit India at an early date.I look forward to Shanghai tomorrow.

Thank you.

It's Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's birthday today, but he isn't getting much love from Indians. There is outrage that he posted an infographic on Facebook which features a map of India without Jammu and Kashmir.

Zuckerberg posted the infographic last night announcing the launch of Internet.org in Malawi, Africa. It shows countries where Facebook's initiative has been launched.

"With this launch, Internet.org is now available to more than 1 billion people around the world!" he posted.

Angry Indians did not take long to spot his error and informed him in many comments, each endorsed with likes by many more people.

01:51   Islamic State releases 'Baghdadi's message'
Islamic State has released an audio message it says is from its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, which if confirmed would be the first in months.

The message urges Muslims to take up arms in its cause and emigrate to the "caliphate" it has proclaimed in areas of Syria and Iraq.

Analysts say the voice appears to be Baghdadi's but this is not verified.

Baghdadi's fate has been unclear amid reports of air strikes by the US-led coalition that is opposing IS.

The message came as IS advanced to within 2km of the Unesco World Heritage site of Palmyra, one of the archaeological jewels of the Middle East.

Syria's antiquities chief warned that if IS seized Palmyra it would destroy everything that exists there.

00:46   Kashmir sapphire ring fetches Rs 46 crore at Geneva auction
A prize 35-carat sapphire from Kashmir has fetched $7.3 million (Rs 46 crore), according to the auction house Christie's.

The sale, to a private anonymous Asian buyer, set a world record for a Kashmir sapphire at $209,689 per carat, Christie's said in a statement.

Kashmir sapphires are sought after for their rich cornflower blue or velvety blue color.

Sapphire-bearing rock deep in the northwestern Himalayas was exposed in a rock slide in 1881, prompting a rush of mining activity. The mines were exhausted by the 1930s.

The cushion-shaped sapphire ring that sold Wednesday is set with triangular-cut diamond shoulders and baguette-cut diamonds elsewhere, mounted in gold. The sapphire is of the notable velvety hue often compared to the color of a peacock's neck feathers.

Among other top pieces sold was a rectangular-cut pink diamond ring of 5.18 carats surrounded by an oval of white diamonds. It sold for $10.7 million (Rs 67 crore). The buyer was anonymous.

00:42   Iranian boats fire at oil tanker in Persian Gulf
Five Iranian boats fired shots across the bow of a Singapore-flagged oil tanker in the Persian Gulf Thursday, causing it to flee to a nearby port in the United Arab Emirates.

A spokesman for Transpetrol, the Norwegian manager of the Alpine Eternity, told Reuters that the vessel was attacked at sea while heading to the UAE port of Fujairah. The ship is now docked at the UAE port of Jebel Ali and is safe, with no injuries to the crew, the spokesman added.

Alpine Eternity was in the Persian Gulf headed for the Strait of Hormuz on an outbound track when she was approached by 5 Iranian Revolutionary Gard Corps Navy patrol craft Thursday and ordered into Iranian waters.

When Alpine Eternity refused, the Iranians fired warning shots and then attempted to disable the cargo ship by firing at the ship's rudder. Alpine Eternity then turned toward UAE territorial waters and was pursued by the five Iranian patrol boats.

Iran appeared to be trying to intercept the ship in order to settle a legal dispute, a US official told Reuters.

The Alpine Eternity reportedly hit an Iranian-owned oil platform in March, the official said.

00:42   How would US challenge China in the South China Sea?
Yesterday, media reports surfaced about how the US military was mulling using aircraft and Navy ships to directly contest Chinese territorial claims to rapidly expanding artificial islands.

In an earlier piece, The Diplomat considered this proposal as part of the larger case for a more robust US approach in the South China Sea.

But what is the logic behind this specific proposal, how would it work in practice, and what would its implications be?

The essence of this proposal is to physically challenge the legality of Chinas land reclamation activities in the South China Sea.
