18:46   PM reaches out to Cong leader during Clean India campaign
Bonhomie across party lines? Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his appreciation of  Assam CM Tarun Gogoi spearheading the Clean India movement, saying, "Glad to see Assam CM Tarun Gogoiji inspiring the people of Assam to work towards a Clean India."

On October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, the PM launched a countrywide five-year Clean India campaign, which urges citizens and obliges government officials to clean up public spaces and focus on introducing better sanitation.

The PM led by example, symbolically sweeping a narrow lane in North Delhi and then tackling garbage in a surprise check at a police station in the heart of the capital.

Gogoi had tweeted after sweeping a compound at a park where Durga Puja had been held: "Formally kicked off the Clean Assam Campaign in Guwahati city. It evoked a good response. Our Government had started the Clean Guwahati Campaign in February 2012."

18:30   UPA prevented Modi's Gujarat government from doing better: BJP
The Narendra Modi-led government in Gujarat would have performed "much better" had it not been for the discrimination meted out by the then Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, BJP said today.

"The Modi government in Gujarat would have performed even better had there been no adverse relationship with the then Central government," Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman said.

"We cannot forget the step-motherly treatment which the Congress meted out to non-Congress state governments," the minister said.

However, the present government at the Centre treats all states in the same manner, she said, responding to a query about Modi's appeal during poll rallies that people should elect BJP government in states as well, to ensure that development is fast tracked.

17:36   Tharoor tweets party colours: 100 violations on LoC since BJP came to power
After being pulled up by the Kerala Congress for what it believes are 'constant adulations' of the PM by Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor,  the former union minister tweeted his surprise that his comments were being construed as pro-BJP.  He said he was simply pro-India and was firmly a Congressman.

Here's proof: Tharoor tweets on LoC violations: "Deeply concerned by reports of 5 killed & 50 injured in Pakistani shelling today. Over 100 ceasefire violations on LoC since BJP came to power!"

16:49   Kerala Cong asks Tharoor to stop 'constant adulation' of PM Modi
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, criticized by his party in Kerala for "his constant adulation of Narendra Modi", today said he was astonished by charges that he is pro-BJP.

"Being receptive to specific statements or actions of BJP leaders does not remotely imply acceptance of the party's core Hindutva agenda," tweeted Tharoor, who was the only politician in a list of nine people tagged by PM Modi last week to promote his clean India campaign.

"The PM pitched his appeal as a non-political one and I received it in that spirit. I am a proud Congressman and a proud Indian. In short: not pro-BJP, just pro-India!" the 58-year-old Kerala MP said.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari has moved the question hour from 11 am to noon for the winter session of Parliament in November. Naidu plans to circulate the agenda well in advance of the Winter session of Parliament after which there will be an all-party meeting for two days where the items in the agenda will be deliberated.

This will unburden not only the government, but also pave the way for the Opposition to strategise their political formulations.

The government hopes the initiative will reduce the tense moments and scenes in both houses.

13:39   Jaitley to Pak: Can't normalise relations with ceasefire violations
Jaitley told Pakistan that it should realise that the kind of environment it was generating between the two countries was certainly not going to help in normalising relations.

Reacting to the continuous ceasefire violations, the minister said Pakistan has been trying to create tension in both the International Border and Line of Control.

"This is resulting in a series of ceasefire violations as a result of which innocent civilians have lost their lives. Pakistan must realise that the kind of environment it is generating between the two countries is certainly not going to help in normalising relations. The onus of creating a positive environment is on Pakistan which is utterly failing to do so.

"Let everybody be assured that our armed forces and para-military forces are fully ready and they are responding to each of these provacations from Pakistan," Jaitley said.

12:54   Modi's brilliant (and banal) mantras
"There is no mantra... I am far from the mantra and tantra world." These are prime minister Narendra Modi's words at the India Today conclave last year. He may not himself think that his approach is formulaic, but, as we shall see, this is untrue.

"There is of course no question that he is a superb communicator. There are few politicians around the world, including US president Barak Obama, and there is none in India, as good as Modi when it comes to talking to the people."  Read

"Congress should look at our Rail Budget, what they couldn't do for so long we did in our first budget.

11:47   Don't forget the Gulf NRIs
A lot of talk over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to the United States has focused on the relationship India has with its diaspora. Modi actively caucused and engaged with those of Indian origin in the United States, and his grand performance in New York's Madison Square Garden was seen as a way of thanking and celebrating his electoral successes with those who had supported him all along.

Accompanying that came plenty of commentary about the nature of the Non Resident Indian and whether their support for Modi and India actually translates into anything. Read

11:13   Talking about taking blessings of Shivaji is a farce: Sena editorial
Equating the BJP with the "corrupt" Congress and the NCP, the Sena said that people in Maharashtra have now realized who are the "real and hidden" thieves of the state.

"It is a known fact that the Congress and the NCP have looted Maharashtra. But for what purpose did the CM of Gujarat Anandiben Patel visit Maharashtra? If she asks all the industrialists to set base in Gujarat, leaving Maharashtra behind, this too amounts to looting Maharashtra," the editorial said.

"How do you define keeping an eye on the coffers of the state and making a deal of Mumbai (for the benefit of Gujarat)? Is this not looting Maharashtra ? And then talking about the blessings of Shivaji Maharaj is nothing but a farce," it said. "Never before has anyone opened a market of Shivaji Maharaj's blessings," the Sena added.

10:58   Sena questions Modi's respect for Thackeray
The Shiv Sena lashed out at the BJP in general and PM Narendra Modi in particular. In its editorial in the Saamna today, the Sena said that the BJP could have shown more respect by maturity in seat sharing talks during the run-up to the Maharashtra elections.

This comes a day after prime minister Modi said he would not say anything against Shiv Sena out of respect for late Bal Thackeray.

"Political pundits are saying that Modi is not criticising Shiv Sena in his speeches. This is the first election (in Maharashtra) in the absence of late Balasaheb, for whom I have great respect. I have decided not to utter a single word against the Shiv Sena. This is my tribute to Balasaheb. There are some things that are above politics, Modi had said.

09:34   Whiff of engineered Amma backlash
The continued incarceration of Jayalalithaa, unlikely to be resolved till Tuesday when Karnataka High Court is scheduled to take a decision on her bail plea, is taking a heavy toll on normal life in her home state Tamil Nadu and her present host Karnataka.

On Tuesday, when schools reopen after a long holiday weekend, private schools of the state have announced their decision to close down -- again in support of Amma.

Although the ruling AIADMK is claiming that the protests were part of a spontaneous reaction, trade bodies alleged that they had been coerced into shutting down.

Why would we be willing to lose brisk business when families will be out for their Diwali shopping unless the authorities ask us to stay off the roads? asked a private bus operator in Tiruppur.

Various trade associations have been allegedly asked by officials to organise some sort of protest to stay on the right side of the government. But for the intervention of Durga Puja -- which is celebrated in Tamil Nadu as Ayduha Pooja followed by Vijaya Dashami -- the AIADMK protests would have hit normal life even harder.

Although the protests are now held by AIADMK functionaries like MLAs and councillors, the party leadership will find it difficult to sustain them if Karnataka High Court refuses to grant bail to Jayalalithaa.

09:32   Congress will make a strong comeback : Mani Shankar
Senior Congressman Mani Shankar Aiyar has expressed hope that Congress Party will bounce back in due course of time once two of its top leaders -- Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi -- work out modalities of the party.

Refuting that the Congress' future was now long gone, the former union minister said the future was written in the party's history of 129 years that passed its baton from one generation to the other.

"We have mother who is Party president and son is the vice president and between the two they have to work out how the baton will be passed," Aiyar, who was in Melbourne to participate a public lecture organised by Australia India Institute (AII), said.

"In the past there has been smooth transition and the older generation retained some of the posts and newer generation which occupied the other posts," he said.

"We can't have a situation developed where everyone who have served the Congress is kicked out and those who have not
are brought into very important positions," he said.

He said there has to be an "intelligence mix" of both older and newer generation.

The mix was currently being worked out by Sonia Gandhi and her son and once they are ready with it the current hiccup of the Congress party will come to an end and we will move forward, he said.

09:31   Pietersen slams 'bullying' England culture
Kevin Pietersen has hit out at the "horrendous" bullying of some of his former England team-mates and accused former coach Andy Flower of "ruling by fear".

In an interview with today's edition of the Daily Telegraph, to promote an autobiography due to be published on Thursday, the South Africa-born batsman Pietersen said he still did not understand why he was effectively sacked.

He added that Cook had been put in an "incredibly difficult position" by the ECB, following his banishment from the team.

Despite everything Pietersen -- who has scored over 8,000 runs in 104 Tests, including 23 hundreds at an average of nearly 48, insisted he had not given up hope of representing England again even though he played no County Championship cricket for Surrey last season.

"Why was I sacked? I'd love to know," he said.

Pietersen, 34, added he'd been shocked by the way senior bowlers Graeme Swann (now retired), Stuart Broad and James Anderson as well as currently injured wicketkeeper Matt Prior abused fielders for dropping catches.

"The thing that horrified me was when Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss said: 'Guys we've got to stop this, it's not right for the team, there are guys that have come to (us) that are intimidated to field the ball.'

"And (the bowlers) had the audacity to stand there and say: 'No, if they've ****** up we deserve an apology.' It's the most angry I ever got in that dressing room.

"I thought, 'I reckon I could hit these guys. Who do you think you are, to ask for an apology from someone who's trying his heart out? Are you perfect, are you never going to drop a catch? Are you never going to bowl a wide?'

09:29   Ronaldo hits third hat-trick in five games
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his third hat-trick in five games as Real Madrid moved into the top four for the first time this season with a 5-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.

It took Ronaldo just two minutes to extend his scoring streak to eight games as he headed home Gareth Bale's cross and Karim Benzema made the game safe when he doubled Madrid's lead just before half-time yesterday.

Bale teed up Ronaldo once more to make it 3-0 and the Portuguese then turned provider for Benzema to tap home his second of the game.

Ronaldo rounded off the scoring two minutes from time when he unintentionally deflected Pepe's effort home to take his tally for the season to 17 goals in just 11 matches in all competitions.

Victory takes Real moved back to within four points of leaders Barcelona behind Valencia and Sevilla, but ahead of champions Atletico Madrid who drop down to fifth.

A fourth defeat in five league games for Athletic, meanwhile, means Ernesto Valverde's men end the weekend in the relegation zone.

Madrid were back to full strength after coach Carlo Ancelotti had rested a few of his regular starters in the 2-1 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in midweek and took just two minutes to make the breakthrough against an Athletic side shorn of confidence.

08:29   Hong Kong protesters divided as deadline looms to clear streets
Pro-democracy demonstrators stood divided over whether to withdraw from protest sites across Hong Kong, hours before a government deadline to clear key roads they have blockaded for the last week.

Embattled Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying has said his administration was determined to "take all necessary actions to restore social order" and pave the way for government staff to resume work by Monday morning.

The protesters are demanding the right to nominate who can run as the international financial hub's next leader in 2017 elections, as China insists only pre-approved candidates like Leung can stand.

Protest group Occupy Central said demonstrators would leave a secondary Mong Kok site on Sunday to reinforce the main rallying point near government offices across the harbour, and would also allow access to a blockaded road near the downtown headquarters in the Admiralty district.

But their announcement was not backed up by defiant student groups, which kicked off the week-long demonstrations earlier than the older activists of Occupy Central had planned.

Scholarism, led by 17-year-old activist Joshua Wong, and the Hong Kong Federation of Students both issued statements saying they had not told supporters to relocate to the main site.

In a minor breakthrough, student leader Lester Shum met Sunday with mid-ranking officials with the aim of setting conditions for a meeting with Leung's deputy Carrie Lam.

08:28   Hewlett-Packard to split in 2 companies: Report
Personal computer and printer maker Hewlett-Packard Co. reportedly plans to split itself into two separate companies by spinning off its technology services business.

The Wall Street Journal reported the pending split today citing people familiar with the matter, who said the company announcement could come as soon as Monday. A spokeswoman for HP declined to comment.

The breakup would create one company that sells HP's computers and printers and a second that focuses on technology service offerings including data storage, servers and software.

The Palo Alto, California-based company has laid off thousands of employees in recent months due to flagging sales as consumers turn to mobile devices to perform basic computing chores. The shift has curbed demand for HP's desktop and laptop computers, as well as its printers.

08:27   One month in, Ukraine truce exists in name only
Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian rebels marked a month since the signing of a Kremlin-backed truce on today by engaging in one of the most heated battles of their six-month war over the ex-Soviet state's eastern rustbelt.

The artillery blasts that rocked the frontline city of Donetsk were yet another blow to the 12-point peace agreement signed on September 5, and which is officially still in force.

"There is no ceasefire. You hear?" 31-year-old resident Yekaterina Manannikova said, pointing in the direction of Donetsk airport, once a glittering showcase for the biggest city in the east, now the battered scene of a non-stop firefight.

"Peace is already declared, how many times should it be declared to be effective? Two, three times?" said another local, Vitaliy Chura, 29, blaming the separatists for the continued fighting.

The agreement aimed at ending almost six months of war that has claimed over 3,300 lives -- included a promise to create a 30-kilometre buffer zone between the two forces.

But Ukraine's military says Kiev will not start pulling back forces until rebels stop firing on its positions, including at the airport.
