Wipro to set up unique Y2K centre

H R Rameshchandra, CEO, Customer Services, Wipro Infotech, has said "We will be setting up this centre which will be working on projects to make the hardware and the systems software ready to meet the next millennium. Gearing up to meet the millennium bug involves a three-tier strategy. The applications software, systems software and the hardware, all the three, have to be made year 2000 complaint.

"While the most important is the applications software, the other two have also to be made year 2000 complaint along with the software," he warned.

According to Rameshchandra, Wipro is at present conducting a comprehensive research on the Y2K problem and the various steps that have to be adopted to tackle the millennium bug.

It will also be the studying how the Indian market is adapting itself to meet this problem. The research is expected to be completed by next week. Based on the findings, the company will work out a strategy on tackling the Y2K problem.

The setting up of the centre to tackle the Y2K problem is part of Wipro's strategy to address the various needs of its customers, thereby enlarging its customer base.

The proposed centre will cater to the needs of Wipro customers. But, it will also extend its services to customers who use other hardware.

Recently Wipro Infotech launched the Wipro Comfort to cater to the needs of computer hardware and software support and maintenance services.

Wipro Comfort has services such as software usage support and support beyond normal business hours, including a round-the-clock helpdesk for mission critical applications.

This new customer support service of Wipro offers a proactive check of critical IT infrastructure components such as servers, ethernet and power.

It keeps operating systems like Solaris to their current release levels, provides software usage support, and helps to exploit operating systems such as Windows NT, Novell and SCO for customised applications.
