leading manufacturer of electrical, electronic, and industrial equipment with a turnover of around Rs 16 billion.

As a multi-product and multi-location company, Crompton Greaves operates through four strategic business groups, each for power systems, industrial systems, consumer products and informatics and telecommunications.

Announcing the tie-up, SGSIL Managing Director Ashok Desai said the partnership with Crompton Greaves is part of the company's strategy to address the emerging markets driven by the Internet, intranet, ISPs and data mining businesses.

The alliance will enable SGSIL to focus on domestic companies that need to leverage their respective businesses with information technologies for being competitive here and in global markets.

Desai said Indian corporations, in any area of operation, would have no choice but to adapt themselves to the latest practices or channel systems if they are to remain in business and have a share of their respective markets.

The potential for Net based business in India is bound to grow phenomenally as trade and commerce conducted over the Net the world over during the current year is estimated to be around $17 billion. The figure involves goods and services of all kinds.

Crompton Greaves's Informatics and Telecommunications Strategic Business Group President S M Trehan disclosed that the partnership with Silicon Graphics would enable the digital division of the group to provide several of its customers with the latest products, solutions, and services and make them strong in competitive markets.

Apart from serving top corporate customers, including GAIL, NTPC, Reliance, Procter & Gamble, and Skycell, the Rs 1.1 billion informatics group with two in-house software units, Crompton Greaves Smart and Crompton Greaves Mersk, have been providing multi-vendor solutions and system integration services to DOT, Railways, banks and defence units.

Also being supplied are access product equipment, including EPBX, C-DoT switches, MAXL and MXXL to the Department of Telecommunications since its inception a decade ago.

Trehan, however, regretted that due to delays in the opening up of the basic services by the private sector for various legal and policy reasons, the full potential of the group's divisions has not been realised.
