Net surfers will now have easy and quick access to software like Internet Explorer 4.0, NetMeeting, Outlook, Project and PictureIt when they log on to the site.

The Microsoft software available for download, include Distributed Component Object Model, DirectX, NT Option Pack, SmartCard, Visual Studio and Windows CE.

At present, new versions of the software are loaded from a CD-ROM on to a Compaq ProLiant server, powered by an Intel processor.

"We are genuinely excited about the opportunity to bring VSNL subscribers the many benefits of Microsoft software,'' said Meena Ganesh, director, applications developer and Internet customer unit, Microsoft India.

"Microsoft looks forward to working with VSNL to bring their subscribers new and enhanced services that take advantage of the full capabilities and performance of the VSNL network,'' she said.

"This is India's first local download site available on the Net, and demonstrates how VSNL is constantly evolving its services to improve an Internet service subscriber's experience on the Net. Now our customers will have much easier and more immediate access to the most updated versions of software from Microsoft, a recognised technology leader,'' said Amitabh Kumar, who is officiating as chairman and managing director of VSNL till the government fills the vacancy.
