Lucent launches GigaSPEED SCS

Email this story to a friend. Lucent Technologies has launched the Systimax GigaSPEED Structured Connectivity Solution, which is expected to allow local-area networks to operate at gigabit speeds with twice as much bandwidth.

This is the only gigabit SCS of its kind available today.

Lucent, which pioneered the gigabit era in 1997 with the introduction of

The new solution, pegged as the 'complete channel solution', allows up to eight times the speed of standard CAT 5 'unshielded twisted pair cabling solutions.

The CAT 6 GigaSPEED SCS is also physically and electrically backward compatible with existing CAT 3, 4, 5 and any future networks.

Lucent Technologies India Limited, which handles Lucent's structured cabling business in India, is very upbeat about its prospects in India, according to V Natarajan, Lucent's general manager for the SAARC region.

The company expects a growth of 30-50 per cent in its structured cabling business in India this year. Lucent will also be pushing its 20-year cabling and components warranty on its CAT 6 GigaSPEED networks and work towards changing the mindset in the market that the 5-10 per cent extra spend on structured cabling is an essential investment for efficient functioning of the networks.

The company is launching a major worldwide marketing initiative this year for its operations outside the US.

Investments of several million dollars have been firmed up for this initiative, according to company officials. In India, the company will be launching a series of advertising campaigns and joint seminars with partners to build up market mind share and enable the customer to understand and appreciate structured cabling.

Direct mailers and push-pull marketing efforts and seminars on information technology infrastructure in cities will support these across the country.

Lucent has also taken steps to be more effective in reaching out to its customers by setting up a warehouse in Pune to service its channel in the country.

Apart from this, its Singapore warehouse is being expanded to four times its size to enable better and faster coverage of the Southeast Asian markets.
