The Bombay High Court today directed Maharashtra government to bear the expenditure that will be incurred for plastic surgery and other medical expenses of an acid attack victim. Aarti Thakur (25), an IT firm employee who was attacked with acid at suburban Goregaon railway station in Mumbai on January 31, 2012, is scheduled to undergo plastic surgery and other operations at the Nova Specialty hospital next week.

The US first lady gave a ringing endorsement of Akie Abe's "izakaya" -- a traditional Japanese-style pub -- after eating there with her opposite number on the second day of her visit to Tokyo.

"Prime Minister, first of all, your wife is an amazing woman," said Obama, as she met Abe at his office.

"And the restaurant is good, so you have to try it. Maybe the next time I come to visit, you can join us." In a good-natured exchange at Abe's office, he revealed: "Actually I've never been to the restaurant".

Earlier in the day Obama, who is in Japan to launch the "Let Girls Learn" initiative, told an audience there was a global "crisis" that left 62 million girls without the chance of an education. 16:23   Sydney techie murder: Police rule out race attack, sexual assault
The New South Wales police has said there have been substantial inroads made in the investigations into the murder of 41-year-old Prabha Ananth Kumar in Sydney.

Speaking to Rediff.com's A Ganesh Nadar, the NSW police said that while the movements of the victim on the night of her murder including CCTV footage, phone records, witness versions had been collected, details could not be revealed.

Police are yet to identify a motive for the murder. The NSW police said, "It is imperative we do not speculate in the investigation, but keep an open mind and conduct a methodical and meticulous probe. There is no information, intelligence or evidence to support this was a racially motivated incident.

"Police are working closely with the Indian community as the investigation continues.

"We can also confirm there is no evidence to suggest a sexual assault took place and at this point in time and we do not believe robbery was a motive."

The post mortem has confirmed that Prabha died as a result of fatal injuries to her neck caused by a sharp bladed instrument.

The police said they were probing Prabha's background in great detail and as of now, there was nothing to indicate the victim was experiencing any trouble prior to her death that may have lead to her attack.

Prabha was stabbed to death at Parramatta Park in Sydney's Westmead suburb when she was returning to her flat.

Footage from close circuit television cameras at the railway station showed her walking towards the park while talking on mobile phone, purportedly with her husband who lives in Bengaluru with their only daughter.

A lengthy legal battle, which began almost three decades ago, finally culminated in an agreement in 2010 allowing the caf five more years in order to reach its golden jubilee. Now that deadline is over.

The birds, whose carcasses were collected over the weekend, appear to have died of avian cholera, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game said Tuesday.

"The migratory birds were on the return leg of their migration from the southwestern United States and Mexico to their breeding grounds on the northern coast of Alaska," said Steve Schmidt, a regional supervisor.

They died near Dubois, Terreton and Roberts -- all in the eastern part of the state.

It's unclear where the geese picked the bacteria from, but authorities are scrambling to ensure that other birds don't feed on the carcasses and spread the disease.

03:20   Catfish named for 'Star Wars' character
A previously unknown species of catfish has been named for the wide-eyed, puckered-mouth "Star Wars" character it resembles.

Its scientific name is Peckoltia greedoi, and it is known for its large, dark eyes, puckered lips and protruding bristles.

But you can call him Greedo, in honor of the bounty hunter from "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope."

You might remember him from the cantina scene on Mos Eisley, where he was killed by Han Solo while attempting to collect on a debt for Jabba the Hutt."

02:34   France weighs skinny model ban
French lawmakers are weighing a ban on extremely thin models.

New legislation debated in Parliament Tuesday would require modeling agencies to get medical certificates from models proving that their body mass index is at least 18.

Models would also be required to undergo regular weight checks.

And agencies that violate the law could face fines and even possible prison sentences.

Dr. Olivier Veran, a doctor and French lawmaker who's proposing the measures, said it's time to put a stop to the practice of pressuring models to be so thin that it's dangerous for their health.

02:33   6.3-magnitude quake shakes southern Chile
A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the southern Chilean city of Concepcion today, five years after a quake and subsequent tsunami hit the same area killing more than 500 people.

Chile's National Seismological Center said the latest quake struck at 3.27 pm, with its epicenter in the town of Cobquecura, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) south of the capital Santiago.

The National Emergency Office said in an initial report that there were no casualties or major damage and the quake did not create a tsunami risk.

Chilean TV showed people evacuated from buildings in Concepcion and reported some problems with phone lines. The February 27, 2010 earthquake struck just off the coast of Chile's Maule region.

It measured 8.8 magnitude, making it one of the largest ever recorded. It killed more than 500 people and inflicted an estimated USD 30 billion in damages.

01:15   Putin celebrates first anniversary of Crimea annexation
When Vladimir Putin reappears, he does it with style -- and an in-your-face attitude.

The Russian President attended a large concert in Moscow's Red Square on Wednesday to commemorate the first anniversary of his country's annexation of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, an act condemned by many in the international community as illegal.

Only Putin doesn't call it annexation. He calls it reunification.

One person was killed and up to five others hurt in a shooting in Arizona today, while a lone gunman was still on the loose, a report and officials said.

"We have an active shooter situation," said Mesa Police Department spokesman Esteban Flores, adding that the incident potentially involved multiple locations.

The AZ Central news website reported that the gunman shot six people, killing one.

Local schools and colleges were placed on lockdown while police searched for the victim, described as a white man in his 40s with a neck tattoo.

00:10   Fed opens door for rate hike even as it downgrades economic outlook
The Federal Reserve on Wednesday moved a step closer to a much anticipated first rate hike since 2006 by removing "patient" from its language, although markets bet on a September hike after it downgraded the expected pace of growth and inflation.

Stock markets rallied after the Fed statement, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield dipped below 2 percent for the first time since March 2 and the euro rose against the dollar on the more dovish forecasts that appeared to argue against a June move.

"This was largely what was expected, though some may have been fearing a more hawkish Fed, and that explains the rally we're seeing right now, that it didn't state a precise time for raising rates," said John Carey, portfolio manager at Pioneer Investment Management in Boston.
