22:28   Dont go by media briefing, there was positive content in Modi-Xi at Ufa
The content and quality of media briefings by top South Block officials regarding high-level exchanges with foreign countries depends to some extent on the questions fielded by the journalists present.

The questions can be pre-arranged at times.

But the onus ultimately is on the official to give the briefing in the best possible light and to project policies in a positive manner.

By these yardsticks, the much-awaited media briefing by the Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modis 80-90 minute meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Ufa on Wednesday turned out to be a damp squib.

22:24   After Maggi, Yippee noodles and Bambino Macaroni banned in Gujarat
Gujarat government today announced a ban on another two instant food products after test results indicated presence of lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) in some of the samples tested by the state Food and Drugs Control Administration.

'Yippee' noodles of Sunfeast by ITC and 'Bambino Macaroni' by Bambino Agro Industries were banned today, FDCA commissioner H G Koshia said. The government had extended the ban on Nestle's Maggi noodles for one month last Saturday.

According to Koshia, of the 23 samples of Sunfeast Yippee, one sample failed the safety test as it showed higher lead content while some samples showed presence of MSG.

"In one of the samples of Yippee, lead content was found to be 3.44 PPM (particle per million) instead of prescribed limit of 2.5 PPM. Such an excess of lead is harmful if consumed. We also found MSG in some other samples, while some samples were found safe," said Koshia.

20:31   Pak uses terrorist outfits as proxies: US army general
In a tacit acknowledgement that Pakistan continues to rely on terrorist outfits as proxies to serve as an instrument of national security policy, a top American general today told lawmakers that the US and Pakistan have differences on the issue, but asserted that financial and military aid to Islamabad would continue.

"Areas of divergent interest with Pakistan include our views on the use of proxies and the importance of a positive and stable Pakistan-India relationship," General Joseph Dunford, the nominee for the position of US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee in a written response to questions during his confirmation hearing.

Dunford said key US strategic interests in Pakistan are preventing al-Qaeda's resurgence in Afghanistan and Pakistan, to limit its ability to attack America, preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology, and promoting regional stability, including a peaceful outcome in Afghanistan.

Noting that the relationship with Pakistan is fundamental to the US' vital national security interests, Dunford said the US will need to continue cooperation with Pakistan to defeat al-Qaeda, support Pakistan's stability, and achieve a lasting peace in Afghanistan.

20:14   New day for South Carolina after Confederate flag removed
Indian-American South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley today said a "new day" has dawned for her state as lawmakers voted for removal of the controversial Confederate flag -- a symbol of nation's racist past.

"It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state," Haley said in a statement after the State House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to remove the flag.

Last month, after a White man shot down several black people inside a historic church, Halley had taken the courageous step to remove the controversial Confederate flag from the State Capitol a move which was welcomed across the nation including the US President, Barack Obama.

"Removing this symbol of our nation's racist past is an important step towards equality and civil rights in America. The flag may soon no longer fly at the State Capitol, but there is still unfinished business in confronting and acting on the inequalities that still exist in our country" Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential candidate, said.

"We can't hide from the hard truths about race and justice. We must do everything in our power to have the courage to name them and change them," she said.

Local media reported that confederate flag could be removed from the State House by tomorrow.

20:10   14 killed in clashes in Libya's Benghazi
At least 14 people were killed in battles in Libya's second city Benghazi between militiamen and forces loyal to the internationally recognised government, hospital officials said today.

The fighting erupted yesterday morning in the centre of the city, cradle of the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed veteran president Moamer Kadhafi, the officials said.

The Benghazi Medical Centre said on its Facebook page that it had received the bodies of 13 people as well as 50 wounded. Al-Jalaa hospital said it was hit by a rocket that killed one person and wounded three. It was not immediately clear if those killed and wounded in the clashes - which subsided late yesterday - were civilians or fighters. Benghazi has been reeling from more than a year of near-daily clashes between pro-government forces and armed groups, including Islamists, battling for control of the eastern city.

At least 1,700 people have been killed in the violence since early 2014, according to the Libya Body Count watchdog. Elsewhere in Libya, a senior military intelligence officer was killed in third city Misrata yesterday when a bomb concealed in his car exploded, a security official said.

The officer, Taher Allush, was close to Fajr Libya, a militia alliance which seized Tripoli in August last year and set up a rival government and parliament. Libya was plunged into chaos after the overthrow of Moamer Kadhafi's regime in 2011, with rival militias fighting for their own territorial and financial interests in the oil-rich country.

17:47   Kejriwals advocates toilet to tap by drinking water after sewage treatment
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday advocated the need to have hundreds of 'toilet-to-tap' sewage treatment plants to meet the burgeoning water needs of the residents of the national capital, which he said could not be met by conventional methods.

Kejriwal also sought to break the stigma associated with treated sewage by drinking a glass of water offered to him by officials at Delhi's first such plant at Keshopur, a joint venture between Delhi Jal Board and an NGO, which he inaugurated here.

"Similar plants in every colony would do away with the need to have sewer pipelines and water pipelines to transport them to big plants. Water can be produced from raw sewage at the local level at small plants such as this," Kejriwal said.

15:59   Dausa accident: BJP's Babul Supriyo says Hema Malini made a 'brutal mistake'
The family of the two-year-old girl who was killed in an accident has received unlikely support from a BJP MP and union minister.

Union minister Babul Supriyo has come on record saying that actor-politician Hema Malini made a "brutal mistake" to have left the child unattended after the accident.

This is the first time a BJP leader has been openly critical of Hema Malini after the accident last week involving her Mercedes car, in which a two-year-old girl was killed.

Supriyo's comments came a day after Hema Malini provoked sharp criticism for tweets in which she blamed the father of the child, who was driving a Maruti Alto, for violating traffic rules. The father, who is still recuperating in hospital after the accident has maintained his daughter could have been saved if the Hema Malini had helped her and taken her to hospital.

Supriyo told NDTV, "It was a brutal error on part of everyone who was there on the scene, the accident scene, including Hemaji, to have left the child back there on the road. That's a brutal mistake. Let's accept that."

He was equally critical that girl was sitting on her mother's lap in the front seat, which he said, put her at risk.

Hema Malini, has been attacked by critics for leaving the accident site in Dausa without reaching out to the family or offering help.

The MP from Mathura, was also injured in the accident and had to be given stitches to her forehead. Reports said that Hema was taken to a hospital immediately after the crash, but the family of the girl had to wait, which resulted in the death.

Yesterday, Hema Malini had tweeted: "My heart goes out to the child who unnecessarily lost her life and the family members who have been injured in the accident. How I wish the girl's father had followed the traffic rules - thn this accident could have been averted & the lil one's life safe!"

12:38   Death of yet another witness in Vyapam scam, STF tells court
The death of yet another witness in the Vyapam scam has come to light with the Special Task Force (STF), which is probing the case, telling a special court he died of liver ailment in February.

The STF officials yesterday informed the court that the witness, identified as Sanjay Singh Yadav, aged around 35, died of serious illness on February 8 at a private hospital in Bhopal.

The STF also submitted his death certificate before the court. According to Yadav's family members, he was suffering from Hepatitis-B and some liver problem, a senior STF official said.

Yadav was a witness in the constable recruitment scam in which three accused, identified as Azharuddin, Naeem and Kaseem, all residents of Uttar Pradesh, were arrested.

The arrests were made in Bhopal in front of Yadav as witness, the official said.

A number of accused and witnesses in the infamous Vyapam scam, related to admission in medical colleges and recruitment for various government jobs, have died mysteriously.

Investigative TV journalist Akshay Singh died mysteriously at Meghnagar in Jhabua district last week after he had interviewed the parents of a girl who was found dead after her name figured in the massive scandal.

A US-based media watchdog recently demanded a credible and thorough investigation into the death of Singh.

Soon after the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was earlier reluctant to hand over the probe into the scam to CBI, decided to write to the MP High Court for an investigation by the central agency into the scandal which is said to have claimed over 40 lives, including that of witnesses.

After Chouhan visited the grieving family to offer his condolences, the deceased journalist Akshay's sister said, "The Chief Minister assured all possible help from the MP government. He even offered me a job at the Madhya Pradesh Bhawan in Delhi, besides monetary help."

Akshay's mother, however, said the family needs nothing but a thorough probe in this matter.

"When he left home, he was healthy, fit and fine. What happened all of a sudden that he died a mysterious death. We don't need any help but just a fair probe which can ascertain the cause of the death of my son," she said.

"The Chief Minister reached our residence at 8.50 am and left by around 9.05 am. He expressed his concern and sensitivity. But after all, he is a politician and we need to judge him by his act," the journalist's sister added.

09:55   Can't ban porn totally, says Supreme Court
Mail Today reports: It seems there will be no restriction, at least for the moment, on watching pornographic content within the confines of four walls in India.

Moral police may shudder at the thought, but the Supreme Court has flatly refused to direct blocking of all pornographic websites.

Personal liberty remains supreme in the land of Kamasutra.

The 'blue' films on the Internet, therefore, will not face the judicial axe, because eroticism is a personal choice.

"Such interim orders cannot be passed by this court. Somebody can come to the court and say 'Look, I am an adult and how can you stop me from watching it within the four walls of my room? It is a violation of Article 21 (right to personal liberty) of the Constitution.' Yes the issue is serious and some steps need to be taken. The Centre has to take a stand, let us see what stand the Centre will take," Chief Justice of India HL Dattu, who was heading a three-judge Bench, said asking the Union home ministry to file a detailed affidavit within four weeks.

09:48   Mumbai: 13-year-old killed by schoolmates for staring at a girl
A 13-year-old student was killed allegedly by his schoolmates inside their school premises in Ahmednagar district for "staring at a girl", police said.

The deceased, Kiran Goraksh Sonawane, was a class VII student of the Nutan School at Rajapur in Sangamner tehsil.

The school is managed by Pragatik Shikshan Sanstha.

"Kiran's head was smashed against a bench and later, against a tree in the school. The provocation was that he used to stare at a girl," a police official from Sangamner city police station said.

"The incident took place on June 26, police said. After the assault he was admitted to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries on July 1. Initially, it was a case of accidental death but subsequently an FIR was registered yesterday," police said.

An FIR under section 302 (34) (murder) of the IPC has been lodged against three students whose names are known to the authorities and against "five to six" other students whose identity is yet to be ascertained, he said.

08:47   Vyapam scam: SC to take a call on CBI probe today
The Supreme Court will today take up pleas for a CBI probe in the Vyapam scam.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had declared on Wednesday that he would also back such a request in the Apex court but ruled out resignation from the post.

All eyes are on the Supreme Court which is scheduled to take up a batch of petitions for ordering a CBI probe into the multi-crore scandal after the Madhya Pradesh high court deferred hearing on a state government's plea for a probe by the central agency.

Saying that the Apex court would hear similar petitions today, the high court, where the state government filed a plea on Tuesday for a CBI probe, deferred the hearing till July 20.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was in Delhi, dismissed demands for his resignation saying the Congress and other parties have been demanding it right from the day he became chief minister more than 10 years ago.

He maintained that none in the party top brass had asked him to plead for a CBI probe.

The massive admission and recruitment scam that has seriously dented the state's BJP government's public image took another murky turn with the post mortem report of a female MBBS student, a suspect in the case whose body was found beside railway tracks in Ujjain in 2012, maintaining it was a "homicidal" death caused by "violent asphyxia".

As the report came into the public domain for the first time at the height of the controversy over a string of mysterious deaths of people associated with Vyapam, including five over the past week, the Madhya Pradesh police decided to reopen the case and launch fresh investigation.

08:29   ISRO spy case: SC to hear ex-scientist Nambi Narayanan's plea today
The Supreme Court will on Thursday hear the plea of former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was discharged in an espionage case, seeking criminal and disciplinary action against former DGP Siby Mathews and other police officials who were part of Special Investigation Team which had probed the matter.

A bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and Prafulla C Pant will hear his appeal against the judgement of the division bench of the Kerala high court which had said that no action was required to be taken against former DGP and two retired Superintendents of Police, K K Joshua and S Vijayan, who were held responsible by CBI for his illegal arrest.

Mathews is currently Kerala Chief Information Commissioner.

The 74-year-old former ISRO scientist said the division bench of the high court had "failed to appreciate the real undercurrent that passed through the mind of the apex court, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the single judge of the high court in their verdict and on untenable reasons, quashed the order of the single judge".

The Apex court had in 1998 granted compensation of Rs 1 lakh to Narayanan and others who were discharged in the case and directed the state government to pay the amount.

Later, Narayanan approached NHRC claiming compensation against the state government for mental agony and torture suffered by him. The NHRC, after hearing both sides and taking into account the apex court judgement of April 29, 1998 awarded an interim compensation of Rs 10 lakh on March 14, 2001.

00:10   'Chauhan should step down to pave way for free and fair probe'
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivaraj Chauhan should step down to pave the way for a free and fair CBI probe into the Vyaapam scam, the CPI said today.

Terming as 'good' his decision to seek a CBI probe into the issue, CPI Central Committee member D Pandian and Tamil Nadu party unit secretary Mutharasan told reporters that unless Chaushan resigned as CM there would not be any possibility of neutrality in the probe.

It was not easy to investigate the case, in which 46 persons had died and stepping down would pave the way for a free investigation, they said.

On the IPL scam, Pandian said that considering the larger dimensions of corruption and alleged involvement of many politicians and bigwigs, Lalit Modi should be brought to India and questioned about his links with Sushma Swaraj, Vasundhara Raje and even Priyanka and Robert Vadra.

This should be done by setting up a special court, as in the 2G Spectrum scam by the Supreme Court, he said, adding that the alleged fake degree issue of Union HRD minister, Smrithi Irani should also be investigated.
