23:47   Bodies of 50 migrants found in back of chicken meat truck in Austria
A people smuggling gang abandoned up to 50 dead refugees at the side of an Austrian motorway after they suffocated in the back of an air-tight refrigerated truck that usually carried frozen chicken.

The victims were found on a motorway near the town of Parndorf in eastern Austria.

The bodies were abandoned in the back of an Hungarian-registered truck. Hungarian authorities confirmed they believe that the driver was Romanian.

Police spokesman Helmut Marban said police stopped shortly before noon today thinking that the parked truck had some mechanical trouble. Then they "saw blood dripping" from the vehicle and "noticed the smell of dead bodies," he said.

22:59   PM will make announcement on OROP in due course: Parrikar
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said here that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make announcement on the implementation of 'One Rank One Pension' policy for ex-servicemen "as and when time comes".

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned about One Rank One Pension in his speech on August 15. He will take a decision and will announce as and when time comes," Parrikar told reporters after attending inauguration of a war memorial.

The ex-servicemen have been protesting against the delay in the implementation of OROP at Jantar Mantar at New Delhi.

Close to 22 lakh retired servicemen and over six lakh war widows stand to be the immediate beneficiaries of the OROP, which envisages a uniform pension for the defence personnel who retire in the same rank with the same length of service irrespective of their date of retirement.

On a query whether the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)-level talks between India and Pakistan will take place as the NSA talks had been called off, Parrikar did not give a specific answer.

DGMO-level talks and NSA talks were two different issues and former are routine, he said.

22:40   Now Peter says Sheena told him she is Indrani's daughter
In a U-turn, former Star India CEO Peter Mukherjea today said deceased Sheena Bora had informed him that she was his step-daughter but he had no reasons not to believe his wife Indrani's denial of that claim though he found it "difficult to digest".

Till yesterday Mukherjea was saying that he wasn't aware of the fact that Sheena was Indrani's daughter as his wife had always projected her as her sister.

"I was told before we got married that Indrani had a brother and a sister, Sheena was the sister and Mikhail was the brother. Sheena at some later point had pointed out that it was incorrect information.

"She had told me that 'Jeeju'... Indrani is giving you wrong information, and you please believe me and told that in so many words that-I am not her sister, but I am actually her daughter. She told me that," Mukherjea told Times Now.

"Of course I couldn't take that at face value, because all these years I believed that she was Indrani's sister and Indrani had told me that. I then confronted Indrani about it and she said it is utter rubbish and this has been fed to Sheena from somewhere else and it is completely, completely untrue and I was not to believe that at all," he claimed.

Mukherjea, however, maintained that he vaguely remembers the date when he was told about the fact and it was sometime in 2011.

"I found it clearly very very difficult to digest it... but there was no question of me not believing my wife, the woman whom I had married and lived with for over 10 years at that point. So why would I have any reason to believe, just because my son said so, I needed to have certain very clear evidence for that to be in consideration," Mukherjea said.

He also claimed that the same thing was communicated to him by Rahul but he had not believed him as well.

"Rahul echoed exactly the same thing what Sheena had said. Obviously they had discussed this clearly between themselves. So when Rahul told me the same thing, I responded to him in exactly the same way.

22:36   OROP row: No headway yet; two more veterans moved to hospital
No headway was today made in resolving sticky issues for OROP implementation during talks between agitating ex-servicemen and government even as two more veterans on indefinite hunger strike were shifted to the Army hospital following doctor's advice.

As hectic back channel talks continued, Army chief Dalbir Singh Suhag met representativces of ex-servicemen at his South Block office but there was "no forward movement", they later said.

"We met the Army chief but there has been no forward movement. We are firm on our stand that the base year has to be 2013-14 and that payment should begin from April 1, 2014. OROP should not be left to the 7th Pay Commission and the definition has to be the same as accepted by the Parliament," Maj Gen Satbir Singh (Retd), Chairman of the Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement said.

The government wants 2011 to be the base year besides no three per cent annual increase. It also wants payment to begin from April 1, 2015, which has been rejected by the veterans.

Sources in the government said it was fully committed to OROP and was in the process of finalisation.

Two more protesting veterans - Major Piar Chand and Hav Sahib Singh - who were on fast-unto-death were evacuated to Army Research and Referral Hospital here on advice of the doctors.

22:16   Prominent ISIS recruiter targeted in airstrike
The US military and intelligence community is in the final stages of confirming that a U.S. drone strike this week killed Junaid Hussain, who is linked to the Garland, Texas, cartoon contest attack, CNN has learned.

"We have a high level of confidence he was killed," one U.S. official told CNN Wednesday, referring to the British-born ISIS recruiter and hacker that the U.S. believes was heavily involved in inspiring attacks.

CNN has learned that Hussain was killed in Raqqa, the self-declared capital of ISIS. Raqqa, located in northern Syria, has been treated as a safe haven by ISIS, some U.S. officials pointed out, so reaching him in the city adds to the significance of the strike.

Several US officials told CNN that the drone strike was specifically targeting Hussain traveling in a vehicle in Syria after the US got intelligence on where he was and watched him to confirm his presence before striking. Subsequent assessments indicated that Hussain had stepped outside when he was hit by a missile from a U.S. drone.

The mission was conducted by the US military because it has clear rules of engagement to attack ISIS, and there could be no implication the British government was involved in the killing of Hussain, a British citizen.

16:08   Govt willing to drive GST with Cong amendments, but Rahul is the bump
The special session of Parliament on GST is top on the agenda for the government. The government is waiting for a nod from Anand Sharma (deputy leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha) and Mallikarjuna Kharge (leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha) for a go-ahead.

However, the BJP's top leadership believes even after a nod from both the senior Congress leaders, it is Congress president Rahul Gandhi who will stall the GST.

Insiders who are floor managers are confident that Sonia Gandhi was on board but it is Rahul who stood firm on certain points in the GST Bill.

The government was willing to take those points on GST Bill as an amendment, but the Congress is apprehensive that PM Narendra
Modi will trip up the opposition by quoting P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee's objections to the GST bill.

Insiders say the BJP has succeeded in driving a wedge between old timers in the Congress and the Gandhi family. And even in the Gandhi family there is a clear consensus, which the BJP wants to nurture.

15:31   Govt ready to climb down on OROP if hunger strikes stop
The BJP government is set to announce the One Rank One Pension (OROP) package soon which will not only satisfy armed forces veterans, but will also aim at convincing those who are not part of the agitations.

According to government sources many stakeholders in OROP are not necessarily part of the agitations and they believe it is high time that the government establishes contacts with such groups through former Chiefs of Army staff.

The government will walk the middle path, say sources, which means the terms and conditions should satisfy OROP pensioners.

The first and foremost condition is that veterans on hunger strike should withdraw their stir at the earliest and come to the discussion table.

15:09   Action plan for FTII to be given to govt tomorrow
The S M Khan committee on the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is expected to present a report to the government tomorrow. The report focuses on the crucial issue of basic problems that FTII faces.

The committee believes that FTII is highly  politicised due to various factors. Congress president Rahul Gandhi's visit to FTII on July 31 (though not mentioned in the report) hints that students who are overstaying in the campus had an ulterior motive.

The government will now study the SM Khan committee report and act on  it. But the removal of Gajendra Chouhan is not a solution apparently.

A highly-placed source in the government believes it is OK to let FTII remain closed for six months. The committee also believes that the hostel  facility of FTII is being misused  by students of the 2008 batch.

Interestingly, the committee found three students living in the hostel with their children!

14:14   Sheena was given lethal injection: Reports
ABP News reports: A major revelation has emerged in the Sheena Bora murder case that she was administered lethal injection in the car when she was murdered.

According to sources close to the murder investigation, Sheena was not killed for honour but because of her claims on mother Indrani Mukerjea's property.

Reports say Sheena was demanding a share in mother Indrani's property so that she could live comfortably with boyfriend Rahul Mukerjea. Indrani, then, allegedly killed Sheena with a lethal injection.

Meanwhile, key information has been revealed by a source that there were two cars involved in disposing off her body. The other car was a hired taxi. Police is grilling the accused further to figure out the identities of occupants of the other car.

Investigators in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case are not ruling out the "honour killing" angle after it came to light that both Peter Mukherjea and main accused Indrani allegedly disapproved of the "relationship" between his son Rahul and the victim.

Update on the Sheena Bora murder:

-- Rahul Mukerjea was today again grilled about his 'relationship' with Sheena and also over the reasons for not pursuing the missing complaint about her.

-- Rahul was also taken to two flats in suburban Bandra and Khar where he had allegedly spent some time with Sheena when they were seeing each other, they said.

-- Rahul and Sheena were said to have been dating for over a year, which Mukherjea's wife and the main accused, Indrani, did not like.

-- Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order), Deven Bharti, said, "We will also seek details from Reliance Metro officials about Sheena's profile, which would give vital information related to the case."

-- Sheena had taken leave of absence on April 24, 2012, and, while she was on leave, sent in her written resignation, MMOPL had said yesterday in its statement.

-- "When Sheena had taken leave of absence on April 24 and was murdered on the same day, then this is very much clear that her resignation letter or email was sent by someone else," said a police officer requesting anonymity.

-- "We would be inquiring with Reliance Metro officials over what reasons were cited in her resignation and did she resign through email or by sending hard copy letter. Did MMOPL officials try to verify the resignation letter and contact Sheena's next of kin to know about her resignation?"

-- What did the HR team of Reliance Metro do to make full and final settlement of Sheena's job and what is the current status?

08:58   India to launch its latest communication satellite today
India's latest communication satellite GSAT-6 will be launched today.

The launch of Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle D6 carrying GSAT-6 is scheduled at 1652 hours today from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at the spaceport of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

GSAT-6 is the 25th geostationary communication satellite of India built by ISRO and 12th in the GSAT series.

GSAT-6 provides communication through five spot beams in S-band and a national beam in C-band for strategic users, ISRO said.

The mission life of the satellite is nine years.

The cuboid shaped GSAT-6 has a lift-off mass of 2117 kg. Of this, propellants weigh 1132 kg and the dry mass of the satellite is 985 kg, it added.

One of the advanced features of GSAT-6 satellite is its S-Band Unfurlable Antenna of 6 m diameter. This is the largest satellite antenna realised by ISRO.

The antenna is utilised for five spot beams over the Indian mainland. The spot beams exploit the frequency reuse scheme to increase frequency spectrum utilisation efficiency.

ISRO said after satellite's injection into GTO (Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit) by GSLV-D6, ISRO's Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan will take control of GSAT-6 and performs the initial orbit raising manoeuvres by repeatedly firing the Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) on board the satellite, finally placing it in the circular Geostationary Orbit.

04:20   US rules out opium eradication programme in Afghan
The US has ruled out simple opium eradication programme in Afghanistan till a comprehensive plan is developed to provide an alternative source of stable income to the farmers in that country who are forced to produce it by terrorist outfits like Taliban.

"This is a tough problem to get at, but to simply, you know, work towards some eradication programme -- to burn them to the ground, while that may have an immediate effect, it doesn't necessarily do anything for long-term stability and security for Afghan farmers," State Department spokesman, John Kirby, told reporters yesterday.

"We're all well aware that the Taliban has used it to finance itself. It's also a source of stability and income for poor farmers, who are basically forced, many times, to grow it for the Taliban," he said.

Responding to a question, Kirby said it is not just as simple as an eradication programme.

03:13   Terror group member pleads guilty to holding 3 US hostages
A member of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia faces a possible life sentence after admitting his role in the 2003 kidnapping of three Americans.

Diego Alfonso Navarrete Beltran pleaded guilty today in US District Court in Washington to three counts of hostage-taking, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The FARC is Colombia's main rebel movement, formed in 1964 as the armed wing of the Colombian Communist Party. US authorities say it evolved into a major armed force financed by drug trafficking, hostage-taking and extortion. It has been on the State Department's list of foreign terrorist organizations since 1997.

Then-US contractors Thomas Howes, Keith Stansell and Marc Gonsalves were conducting counter-drug aerial surveillance in southern Colombia in February 2003, when they were forced to crash land their plane on a mountainside and taken captive.

Two others aboard the plane, American contractor Thomas Janis and Colombian army Sgt Luis Alcides Cruz were killed by FARC rebels at the crash site.

US authorities say Beltran, 43, guarded the hostages, who were often chained together and led on forced marches through the Colombian jungle. They were held in cages, left outside to face the elements and received no medical attention as their physical conditions deteriorated.

"We had to cut up the deck of the wooden boat to get to (the bodies) in a safe way," Swedish coast guard spokesman Mattias Lindholm told The Associated Press.

He said the victims probably died of asphyxiation. The corpses were placed in body bags to make sure they didn't come into contact with the survivors.

The Italian coast guard said that in addition to the 51 dead discovered by the Poseidon crew, three women were found dead in another migrant boat and another corpse was found during the 10 rescue operations that were launched today.

The coast guard said around 3,000 people were rescued as Libya-based smugglers took advantage of calm seas to send boats overloaded with migrants to Europe.
