23:20   Kejriwal to wield broom in PM Modi's backyard
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on Thursday, AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal would be leading a clean-up drive by his party in the vicinity of Modi's official residence on Race Course road.

Kejriwal, along with his party's volunteers, will take part in the clean-up campaign at BR Camp in the Race Course road area even as Modi launches the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan in the national capital.

As part of the events to mark the opening of the cleanliness mission on Thursday, the prime minister would also be visiting Valmiki Sadan.

The Valmiki community is known to be a strong supporter of AAP. Modi is scheduled to tomorrow visit Valmiki Sadan, which is under the jurisdiction of NDMC, to inaugurate a modern toilet block there.

Talking about the cleanliness mission, Kejriwal said it should not be limited to being a "symbolic" initiative and the authorities should work for the betterment of safai karmacharis.

23:05   Hong Kong protesters threaten to occupy buildings
Raising the stakes in their standoff with the authorities, student leaders of Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests warned they will step up their actions if the territory's top official doesn't resign by tomorrow, possibly occupying several important government buildings.

Storming government buildings would risk inviting another confrontation with police. It also would put pressure on the Chinese government, which so far has said little beyond declaring the protests illegal and backing Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying's attempts to end them.

Chinese state media indicated the government may be losing patience with the protests. An editorial solemnly read Wednesday on China's main TV broadcaster CCTV said all Hong Kong residents should support authorities to "deploy police enforcement decisively" and "restore the social order in Hong Kong as soon as possible."

Students are leading the protests for wider electoral reforms, which pose the stiffest challenge to Beijing's authority since China took control of the former British colony in 1997.

Lester Shum, vice secretary of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, said the students would welcome an opportunity to speak to a Chinese central government official.

04:24   US treasury slaps sanctions on Pakistan-based terror outfits
The US Treasury Department is taking action against individuals and networks linked to two terrorist groups based in Pakistan.

Treasury's action on Tuesday targets the leader of Harkat-ul-Mujahedeen, which operates throughout India, Pakistan and Afghanistan and maintains terrorist training camps in eastern Afghanistan.

Treasury also slapped terrorist designations on two people and their networks for allegedly working to provide financial support to Lashkar-e-Tayiba, a well-organized group based in Pakistan's Punjab province that is suspected of having historical ties to Pakistani intelligence.

The action freezes any assets they might have in any US jurisdiction and bans US citizens from doing business with them.

David Cohen, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, says both groups are violent terrorist organizations that train militants and support extremist groups, including Al Qaeda.
