BJP today questioned the "conspicuous silence" of some leaders on the sexual assault of a journalist by former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal, saying they were very vocal on the rape and murder of Nirbhaya last year but are not speaking out now.

Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said on his Facebook page that Tejpal's assault of a young journalist has led to an outrage similar to the one seen when the "inhuman and brutal rape and murder" of Nirbhaya took place last December.

Without naming the Congress, he said some leaders have been silent on the Tejpal case. The BJP has alleged that Tejpal is close to the Congress and hence the ruling party is not criticising him.

12:52   Lok Sabha polls: BJP divided over pre-poll alliance in Tamil Nadu
Reports our correspondent in New Delhi: The BJP is divided over an alliance with the DMK in the Lok Sabha polls.

While the state unite of Tamil Nadu wants a pre-poll alliance, the central leadership has ruled out this possibility.

On December 15, the central committee of the DMK is expected to meet to discuss the political situation in Tamil Nadu and to set up an anti-Jaya, anti- Congress group soon.

The BJP central leadership took stock of the scene in Tamil Nadu on Friday. Modi stated he would keep out of the state, as he felt the need to focus more on Karnataka -- to revive the BJP and try to retain the present LS seats.

Modi will not contact AIADMK for a pre-poll alliance either, say sources. The BJP feels it can concentrate more on Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as a compensation for the two or three seats it may lose in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP central leadership strongly feels that Jayalalitaa will not ally with the Congress.

12:45   'India wastes Rs 13,300 cr of fruits and veggies annually'
India, the world's second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, throws away fresh produce worth Rs 13,300 crore every year because of the country's lack of adequate cold storage facilities and refrigerated transport, a report said.

"The value of fruits, vegetables and grains wastage in India, at Rs 44,000 crore annually. Fruits and vegetables account for the largest portion of that wastage. Eighteen per cent of India's fruit and vegetable production valued at Rs 13,300 crore is wasted annually," according to data compiled in a new report by Emerson Climate Technologies India, a business of the US-based manufacturing and technology company Emerson.

The report says that two of the biggest contributors to food losses are the lack of refrigerated transport as also the lack of high quality cold storage facilities for food manufacturers and food sellers.

Without improvements to its cold chain infrastructure, from farm harvest to table, food problems in India, which is the world's second largest producer of fruits and vegetables, will remain vast and are likely to grow, warns the report.

After a big-bang listing, Twitter shares seem to be losing its fizz while social media rivals Facebook and LinkedIn are holding the fort amid portfolio churn by investors.

In a dream debut, microblogging site Twitter's stock popped up on the New York Stock Exchange debut on November 7 and closed with 73 per cent gain for investors who subscribed to its initial public offering price of $26 a piece. The firm, which lets people post 140-character messages, raised $1.8 billion in a keenly watched IPO.

Skeptics were left speechless as the valuation of the firm, which is yet to make profit after seven years of existence, soared to over $25 billion even as tech firms like Facebook and LinkedIn ended 2-4 per cent lower that day. However, the momentum in Twitter shares seem to be falling already and analysts have begun to question the company's current valuations vis-a-vis Facebook and LinkedIn, arguing on better margins and larger size for the two.
