22:04   CBI gets AP go-ahead for attaching Jagan's firms

The noose tightened further around Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy in the disproportionate assets case with Andhra Pradesh government giving permission to the CBI on Friday to attach properties of three firms he promoted.

The state government issued three separate orders on Friday evening giving permission to CBI to attach the properties of Jagati Publications, Indira Television and Janani Infrastructure Company promoted and owned by Jagan.

The attachment process, however, will take six months to be completed as CBI has to first identify the properties and then file a detailed petition in the special court, informed sources said.

The state government, in response to a plea by CBI a few days ago, obtained legal opinion before granting the permission for attachment of Jagan's properties, the sources added.

An administrator would be appointed to oversee the properties (to be attached) and prevent any type of transactions of them, the sources said.

21:12   Italy recalls envoy to India over marines row
Italy on Friday recalled its ambassador to India after a charge sheet was filed against two Italian marines in the killing of two Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast three months back.

Official sources in New Delhi said that Italian envoy Giacomo Sanfelice di Monteforte has been called back by his government for "consultations".

The decision came on a day when Kerala police filed a charge sheet accusing the two Italians -- Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone -- of murder before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kollam (Kerala).

The marines on board the Italian ship 'Enrica Lexie' had allegedly shot dead two Indian fishermen -- Valentine Jalastine and Ajesh Bi -- on February 15, apparently mistaking them for pirates.

In Rome, the Italian Foreign Ministry in a statement said: "In the light of the developments in the situation in Kerala and the charges against the two Italian servicemen, Latore Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone, the Italian ambassador to New Delhi, Giacomo Sanfelice has been recalled to Rome for consultations with the government".

20:30   Ammo dump in Russian military base on fire
Russian emergency workers evacuated about 1,800 people from their homes on Friday after a fire broke out at a military base in the country's far east, sparking an explosion of stored shells.

Russian Railways, the company that manages the country's vast rail network, said it had closed down a section of the Trans-Siberian Railway because of the incident and was expecting train delays.

Residents of two villages close to the base where Soviet-era shells were stored have been evacuated, and another two villages are being cleared, a spokeswoman for the far eastern branch of the emergency ministry said.

The blaze triggered a chain of blasts that left two soldiers slightly injured, the ministry said, with rescue workers unable to put out the flames as artillery shells continued to explode three hours later.

The defence ministry said there were about 489 train wagons containing 100-millimetre shells at the base.

The base lies seven kilometres from a train station in the nearest village of Sungach, close to the Chinese border and about 200 kilometres north of the port city of Vladivostok.

17:22   Rajya Sabha adjourned twice over foul smell

Sid Mallya certainly doesn't come off smelling like lavender.

Which takes us to this story -- A foul smell today led to loss of half an hour in Rajya Sabha as members complained that they felt uncomfortable. It all started as Alka Balram Kshatriya (Cong) first raised the alarm at around 3.45 pm when the House was having a heated discussion on the Telangana issue.

"There is some burning smell and I am not kidding," she said amidst much amusement of the members, particularly of the Opposition which was engaged on a verbal duel over Telangana issue with the treasury bench. However, P J Kurien, who was on the Chair, took up the matter in all seriousness as some of Kshatriya's colleagues from the party also echoed concern, and adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

As soon as the House reassembled, Renuka Chowdhury (Cong) stood up and said the smell was still persisted. Kurien adjourned the House once again for 15 minutes saying the cause of the smell should be found out.

The previous "smelly" incident occurred on May 11.

16:18   Subramanian Swamy wants IPL banned

Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy today demanded a ban on IPL, alleging that the "civilised game" of cricket has been degenerated into a "vulgar" display of money and immorality leading to national security threat.

"I demand that the government ban the IPL tournament forthwith since game's collateral consequences are a degeneration of a civilised game of cricket into a vulgar display of money, immorality, all converting into a serious national security threat," he said. "The recent incident of vulgar, unruly, rowdy behaviour
of some of the players, owners and politicians make it necessary to impose this ban for a brief period," he said.

Swamy said, "IPL has become a vehicle for generating black money, money laundering, anti-nationals like mafia are getting involved in it and these are bringing country's morality to below acceptable levels. It should be banned."
He also demanded that politicians and film stars should not be involved in the IPL. "There should not be any politicians or film stars involved in any positions in IPL," he said.

16:08   Taylor, Burton photo resurfaces after 40 years

A black and white photo of Hollywood diva Elizabeth Taylor and her fifth husband Richard Burton, taken by a photographer who hated them, has surfaced after 40 years.

The picture by legendary society photographer Cecil Beaton, which was kept in private collection of Beaton's friend, is expected to fetch 12,000 pounds at an auction here, the Daily Mail reported.

Beaton photographed the then 39-year-old star with husband Burton at a black tie event in 1971 despite hating the couple for their "crassness". She was photographed wearing a couture Valentino dress with a Van Cleef and Arpels necklace entwined in her hair.

Beaton later gave the photograph as a gift to friend Brian Hammond, who owned the Gerry's Club in London's Soho. The picture hung in his club up until he died earlier this year. His family is now auctioning the photo.

In his diaries Beaton wrote, "I have always loathed the Burtons for their vulgarity, commonness and crass bad taste, she combining the worst of US. and English taste, he as butch and coarse as only a Welshman can be. "She wanted compliments. She got none. I felt I must be professional and continued, but not without loathing at this monster."

15:17   Experts caution on Facebook IPO frenzy

As the shares of social networking giant Facebook begin trading on the NASDAQ exchange today, experts believe that the stock is overpriced at USD 38 apiece and one must wait for now to invest in the firm.

NYU Stern School of Business Finance ex-Professor Kenneth Froewiss said that adding Facebook to a portfolio early on is risky for experienced pros and investment amateurs alike.

"Even for those individuals with above-average net worth, purchasing shares at an IPO, especially a 'hot' one that has been widely hyped, is rarely a good idea," Froewiss said. He said it is like playing a lottery. "Might someone on occasion reap a tremendous windfall by doing so? Yes, but then again, on occasion someone wins the lottery. That does not make the lottery a great investment in general," he added.
