23:56   Trump vows to immediately deport up to 3 million immigrants
In line with his hardline immigration stance, United States President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to immediately deport up to three million undocumented immigrants, saying 'we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate'.

"What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate,' Trump told CBS News.

"But we're getting them out of our country, they're hereillegally," the 70-year-old business tycoon-turned politician said in an excerpt released ahead of broadcast of the interview.

However, House Speaker and top Republican leader Paul Ryan, striking a different tone, said that despite Trump's campaign rhetoric, lawmakers are not prepared to form a deportation force to round-up and deport undocumented immigrants.

During the election campaign, Trump had warned that those countries which do not accept these illegal immigrants, he would enforce the legal provision of stopping of issuing of visas to the people of those countries.

19:17   Stop emotionally blackmailing people: Maya to PM
After describing the Centre's move to demonetise high-value currency notes as an 'economic emergency', BSP supremo Mayawati today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should stop the 'emotional blackmailing' of the people who were facing hardships due to the decision.

'It is good that Modiji has left his family and village for the country but that does not mean that he would take immature decisions which are against the public interest and stick to them. He should stop emotionally blackmailing the people who are facing hardships due to the move,' she said in a statement.

The Bahujan Samaj Party leader had earlier described the decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes as an 'imposition of an undeclared economic emergency' on the country by the Modi government.

Mayawati alleged that the decision was aimed at 'diverting the attention of the voters from the failures of the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) government ahead of the Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand assembly polls'.

'Just before the Assembly elections in these states, Modi realised the problem of black money. Ninety per cent of the people is unhappy with this decision,' she claimed.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the poor and farmers were badly hit by the demonetisation, adding that the decision was not in the interest of the people.

Samajwadi Party's Uttar Pradesh unit chief Shivpal Yadav also raised his voice against the move citing the problems being faced by the people.

'The common man is facing a lot of problems due to the decision. They have to stand in queues to get their own money. Businesses have come to a standstill and the people are hassled due to the chaos prevailing in the country,' he said.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister had said he had left his village and family for the sake of the country.

Banerjee later said she spoke to leaders of other parties too.

"Today, I spoke with several political leaders regarding a joint movement and to meet Rashtrapati ji together," Banerjee said.

"Let us all fight this together to give relief to common citizens, poor & stop this financial anarchy," she said.

16:44   BJP informed 'friends' about demonetisation in advance: Kharge
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was quoted as saying by ANI that the Bharatiya Janata Party had corporate friends earlier about the demonetization and only common man is suffering due to it.

"We will raise the issue in Parliament," Kharge said.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat Congress today alleged that the Centre has introduced demonetisation of high value currency notes as a face saving exercise, as it has failed to fulfil its pre-poll promise of bringing back black money stashed in foreign banks.

Senior Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela took a dig at the BJP-led Central government alleging that the move to scarp currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 is a 'conspiracy' by the saffron party to help those close to them to convert black money into white at the cost of hardships faced by common man in exchanging their notes.

"In their campaign for 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP had promised to bring back black money parked in Swiss banks. Now, as the government failed to fulfil their promise, they came up with this idea, which is nothing but a face saving exercise by the BJP," Vaghela was quoted as saying by PTI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks at valedictory ceremony of the year-long centenary celebrations of the Karnataka Lingayat Education Society in Belgaum, Karnataka. Excerpts from his address:

- Even political parties, families can't survive for a 100 years. It is great that this institution ran for a 100 years.

- Congress people ask me why I scrapped Rs 1,000/500 notes? When you stopped 25 paise coin, did I ask them anything?

- I did not hide anything from the country. I had said on the first day that 50 days will be needed for this job. I took the country in confidence and did it.

- On the night of November 8, the poor of India were sleeping peacefully while the rich were running for sleeping pills which nobody was there to give them.

- There is 'pain' here, but what is more is 'gain' for the country.

- You have seen people who looted you for 70 years. Give me 70 moths to clean it.

14:26   Demonetisation will curb Maoist activities: Chhattisgarh police
Maoist activities are likely to suffer a major setback following the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes as the ultras may find it difficult to dispose of their cash, apparently in hundreds of crores, concealed in insurgency-hit regions of Chhattisgarh, police has claimed.

According to sources, Naxals have stashed over Rs 7,000 crore at their dumps in Bastar region.

Following the move, the state police have beefed up security at banks, ATMs and other economic establishments in the insurgency-affected pockets, particularly Bastar.

"As per intelligence inputs, the ban on higher currency has frustrated the Naxals and they may target ATMs, banks, post offices and other business establishments in near future in the areas of their presence," Special Director General of Police (anti-Maoist operations) D M Awasthi said.

"In view of it, security forces in all the districts, particularly those Naxal-affected, have been alerted and asked to enhance security of such establishments," he said.

According to Awasthi, Maoists collect crores of rupees through levy and extortion and keep cash with them or in the dumps in forests for their activities and distribution among their cadres and supporters.

With the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, Naxalites might make attempts through various ways via their local supporters or villagers to deposit the money or exchange it in banks. Therefore, checks are also being conducted to intercept unaccounted cash in these areas, he said.

11:58   Now, Trump describes the Clintons as 'great, amazing' people
Leaving behind the bitterness of the election campaign, United States President-elect Donald Trump has praised Hillary Clinton whom he defeated in shocking poll results, calling the former secretary of state as very strong and smart.

In a television interview after Tuesday's win, Trump described Clinton, whom he had threatened to jail for unspecified crimes of corruption, as very strong and very smart and full of grace and decency.

In the interview excerpts of which were aired yesterday, he heaped praise upon Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, who was often the target of his attack as well.

Trump said he received a very lovely call from Clinton after she lost the election.

"Hillary called, and it was a lovely call, and it was a tough call for her, I mean, I can imagine. Tougher for her than it would have been for me. I mean, for me, it would have been very, very difficult. She couldn't have been nicer," he said.

With wife Melania and his four oldest children by his side, Trump described the phone call as incredibly pleasant and genial.

"She couldn't have been nicer. She just said, 'Congratulations, Donald, well done'. And I said, 'I want to thank you very much, you were a great competitor'. She is very strong and very smart," he said.

'Yes. Because it happens to be one of the strongest assets,' he said in response to a question.

11:21   Rs 2,000 notes pose fresh challenge... Nobody gives CHANGE
Besides the arduous task of battling snake-like queues outside ATMs to get their hands on the freshly minted Rs 2000 and Rs 500 notes, citizens are now besieged with the herculean task of wrangling for change, as shopkeepers and stores are demanding the exact amount from customers, stoking a war for change... literally.

"Nobody is accepting this Rs 2,000 note and shopkeepers are saying that they don't have change. Where will I keep it? They are still not accepting this note even if I buy groceries," said an angry local.

Another peeved local from Kanpur expressed frustration because his family is facing several difficulties for buy vegetables.

"We get only Rs 2,000 to 4,000 and if in case, I have to go to for some medical check-up, then the entire Rs 4,000 gets spent, and then I am left with no money to come back home. Initially, it was easy for public to withdraw Rs 500, but now, we are left with no other option but Rs 2,000, common people are facing a lot of difficulties," he added.

10:28   Sting reopens Paris Bataclan amid tears, cheers & controversy
Rock star Sting reopened the Bataclan, the Paris concert hall where jihadists massacred 90 people, at a symbolic and emotional show to mark the first anniversary of France's bloodiest terror attack.

In a sensational turn of events, the concert hall's co-director said he had prevented two members of the US group Eagles of Death Metal, who were on stage when the bloodshed started on November 13, 2015, from entering.

"They came, I threw them out -- there are things you can't forgive," Bataclan co-director Jules Frutos told AFP, furious  at Eagles frontman Jesse Hughes for his claims that some of the venue's Muslim security men were complicit in the attack.

"He makes these incredibly false declarations every two months. It is madness, accusing our security of being complicit with the terrorists... Enough. Zero. This has to stop," Frutos added.

Hughes, a rare right-wing rocker and supporter of US president-elect Donald Trump, has also said without evidence that Muslims were celebrating outside during the venue during the siege. However the band's manager Marc Pollack denied members of the group had tried to enter the Bataclan.

10:21   Scramble for Notes: People running out of patience
Chaos reigned outside banks and ATMs across the nation as panicked customers stood in long, serpentine queues for several hours to withdraw cash.

In the absence of proper currency circulation in the system, it is a semi-meltdown of small economic activities in the country, Business Standard reported.

Thankfully, the law and order situation was largely in control even as police had to be called in some places, including in New Delhi, to restore order.

While people were happy by the move to ban black money, the mismanagement has angered them. The situation is worse in villages and towns where ATM penetration is scarce. Most ATMs had to be shut down as people were seen withdrawing the maximum Rs 2,000 allowed per account from multiple accounts they possess, all in Rs 100 notes.

In Moradabad, locals vandalised SBI's Katghar branch gate after the bank stopped operating after 4pm.

The bank security guard said: "The bank closed at 4pm, but people got angry & vandalised properties. They were shouting that operating time of bank was till 8pm."

In Madhya Pradesh's Bardaha village, locals, enraged over not getting ration from a fair price shop due to shortage of cash, allegedly looted groceries from the outlet in protest.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said that it would take two-three weeks to recalibrate ATMs across the country for the new notes. "It will be a slow process. Such a big cash replacement cannot happen in a mechanical way overnight," Jaitley said, adding that that it was to maintain secrecy that the two lakh ATM machines of the country were not recalibrated in advance.

But people's patience clearly seems to be running out.

08:39   Demonetisation: Journalist broke the story a fortnight before PM
Though the Centre has claimed that the decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes was known only to a handful of people, the story was broken by a Kanpur-based Hindi journalist almost a fortnight before the dramatic late evening announcement by the prime minister.

Brajesh Dubey of the Hindi daily Dainik Jagran is gleefully accepting congratulatory telephone calls and envious looks from his peers for his story of October 27 that also confidently reported that Rs 2,000 notes would be issued as replacement.

Dubey, who is on the business beat for the Hindi daily, did not reveal his source for the story citing the "ethics of journalism", but said it came from "informed and long-standing sources".

It was done routinely, he said, and did not draw attention even from colleagues, forget readers, until the November 8 "surgical strike" on black money -- an event that was so "top secret" that ministers were reportedly "quarantined" after the cabinet meeting where they were informed of the decision.

08:35   Chinese ship opens trade route via new Pakistani port
Pakistan's top civil and military leaders traveled to the country's southwest on Saturday to open a new international trade route by seeing off a Chinese ship that's exporting goods to the Middle East and Africa from the newly built Gwadar port.

The first convoy of Chinese trucks carrying goods for sale abroad has arrived in Pakistan amid tight security using a road linking Gwadar to China's northwestern Xinjiang region, the government said in a statement.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan will provide best possible security to foreign investors to enable them to use the Chinese-funded port for international trade.

Amid security concerns for foreign workers, the Pakistani army has created a special force to guard the new trade routes and the port, which is located in insurgency-wracked Baluchistan province where an overnight blast at a shrine killed nearly 50 people.

The attack was claimed by the Islamic State group and Pakistani officials said it was aimed at harming the Chinese-funded projects in the southwest and elsewhere in the country.

Hillary Clinton has blamed the Federal Bureau of Investigation for her loss at the hands of her Republican challenger Donald Trump, claiming the decision to revive the probe into her email accounts stopped her momentum towards a historic win.

"There are lots of reasons why an election like this is not successful. Our analysis is that Comey's letter raising doubts that were groundless, baseless, proven to be, stopped our momentum," Clinton told fundraisers and donors during a conference call on Saturday.

Clinton said her campaign was winning until FBI Director James Comey wrote a letter to the Congressional leadership that they have reopened the investigations into the email scandal.

Two days before the elections, the FBI again sent a letter to the Congressional leadership that it did not find anything new in the investigation that was primarily screening of some 650,000 emails that it found in a laptop of one of her aide, Huma Abedin, which she shared with her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner.

"The second letter, even that gave her the clean chit, hit her more as this energised Trump's supporters. Although she got more popular votes, Trump was declared the winner as he grabbed more than 270 electoral college votes, required to win the presidential elections," said the 69-year-old former Secretary of State.

08:14   PM returns home after Japan visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home tonight after concluding his three-day visit to Japan during which the two countries signed a landmark civil nuclear deal and nine other agreements in various fields.

"Sayonara Japan! An important friendship stands strengthened as PM @narendramodi enplanes from Osaka for the journey back to Delhi," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup had tweeted on departure.

Before his departure, Modi addressed a luncheon gathering of business leaders in Kobe, a city on Osaka Bay.

He also travelled in Japan's famed high-speed Shinkansen bullet train, which is being introduced in India on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad stretch, with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.

During the visit, India and Japan signed 10 pacts covering a range of areas such as boosting Japanese investment in infrastructure, railways, and for cooperation in space and agriculture, as part of agreements to bolster bilateral ties.

Shedding its reservations, Japan yesterday made an exception to sign a landmark civil nuclear deal with India, opening the door for export of its atomic technology and reactors, after adding features like safety and security keeping in mind its sensitivities on the issue.
